Prestige Class: Planeswalker

Some dream of worlds beyond theirs--worlds with different rules of magic and reality, worlds where space and time behave differently, worlds where gods walk along side mortals--but you don't just dream of these worlds, you walk among them.

Planeswalkers are spellcasters that specialize in inter-dimensional travel. They use less magic than regular spell-casters to move between planes, know spells that increase their survivability, and have bodies and minds capable of the different environments they encounter. True planar travel is impossible until the caster has access to 7th level spells, so Planeswalkers are, by definition, powerful spellcasters.

Prerequisites

In order to advance as a Planeswalker, you must meet the following prerequisites:

  • The ability to cast the Plane Shift spell through a class feature. A planeswalker must be able to travel through the planes (for example, having the spellcasting class feature, being 13th level in the class granting it, and knowing the Plane Shift spell).
  • Proficiency in either Arcana, Nature, or Religion. Some source of knowledge of the planes is crucial to planeswalking.

Another consideration before choosing the planeswalker prestige class is the setting of your campaign. The material component of Plane Shift is a tuning fork attuned to the plane you wish to travel or banish to. There is no guideline in the rules on the construction of these, so you will need the co-operation of your DM. It also might not make sense to be a planeswalker if the entire campaign takes place in one plane.

Plane Shift Virtuoso

At 1st level, you gain the ability to cast Plane Shift more efficiently. When targeting only yourself, you can cast Plane Shift using a 6th level spell slot instead.

If you are able to cast Plane Shift using Mystic Arcanum, you are able to expend your 6th level Mystic Arcanum to cast Plane Shift instead.

Spellcasting

Planeswalkers continue to hone their magical skills to better survive in and travel between the planes.

Spell Slots

The Planeswalker table shows how many spell slots you have at each level. To cast one of these spells, you must expend a slot of the spell's level or higher. You regain all expended spell slots when you finish a long rest.

Spells Known

At 1st level you learn one spell from the Planeswalker spell list. These spells can be any level for which you have spell slots. The levels used to calculate the level of spells you can learn are the levels of spells slots you have in total, not just from this class.

Additionally, when you gain a level in this c1ass, you can choose one of the planeswalker spells you know and replace it with another spell from the planeswalker spell list, which also must be of a level for which you have spell slots.

Spellcasting Ability

You retain the spellcasting ability, spell save DC, and spell attack modifier from the class which met the requirement of granting you the ability to cast Plane Shift.

Spellcasting Focus

You may use the same arcane focus or holy symbol from the class which met the requirement of granting you the ability to cast Plane Shift.

Colored Mana Ability

At 2nd level, you choose a mana specialization. Choose one of the following colors: blue, white, red, green, or black. You gain the first feature listed under that color in the Colored Mana Abilities table.

At 4th and 6th level, you choose another color (which may be the same color) and gain the first ability listed under that color that you don't already have from that color.

In addition, you may treat the corresponding spell on the Colored Mana Bonus Spells table as though it were on your spell list when choosing which spells you learn from this class.

Tuning Fork Creation

Also at 2nd level, you gain proficiency in smith's tools if you don't already have it. You are capable of crafting tuning forks attuned to certain planes that are used as material components in the Plane Shift spell. You can only craft tuning forks for planes that you have already been to or that your DM grants you.

Demiplane Virtuoso

At 3rd level, you learn Demiplane if you don't already know it, and it doesn't count towards your spells known from this class.

When accessing an already created demiplane, you may cast Demiplane with a 7th level spell slot.

If you are able to cast Demiplane using Mystic Arcanum, you are able to expend your 7th level Mystic Arcanum instead when accessing already created demiplanes.

Magical Secrets

By 4th level, you have witnessed many unusual spells and taken some of them as your own. Choose two spells from any class or prestige class including this one. A spell you choose must be of a level you can cast as shown on the Planeswalker table (or Multiclass Spellcaster table in the Player's Hand Book), or a cantrip.

The spells count as planeswalker spells for you, and are included in the Spells Known column of The Planeswalker table.

Gate Virtuoso

At 5th level, you learn Gate if you don't already know it, and it doesn't count towards your spells known from this class.

When opening a portal to a location you've already been to (and not specifying the name of a creature), you can cast Gate with an 8th level spell slot.

2

Words of Exile (GTFO)

By 7th level, you've learned powerful words of banishment. Creatures have disadvantage on saves against being banished to other planes by your spells (e.g. Banishment, Divine Word, Imprisonment, Maze, Planeshift).

You also have advantage on saves against being banished to other planes as long as you're not mute.

Colored Mana Abilities

Extended Ability Score Improvement

Increase an ability score specified by the color you gained this from in the Colored Mana Ability table by 1, to a maximum of 22.

This higher maximum only applies when increasing your ability score through this class feature.

Cosmic Body

You gain resistance to the damage type specified by the color you gained this from in the Colored Mana Ability table.

Innate Spell

You learn the spell specified by the color you gained this from in the Colored Mana Ability table. It counts as a planeswalker spell, but doesn't count against the number of planeswalker spells you know.

You can cast this spell as a 4th level spell without using a spell slot or verbal, somatic, or material components. Once you cast the spell in this way, you can not do so again until you complete a long rest, though you can still cast it normally using an available spell slot.

Dimensional Expert

When you cast an applicable spell (denoted by an * on the Planeswalker spell list) using a spell slot, you may regain an expended spell slot. The slot you regain must be of a lower level than the spell you cast and can't be higher than 5th level.

Freedom of the Skies

You gain a fly speed of 40 feet (hover).

Spell Blitz

When you roll damage for a spell, if any of the dice are their maximum value, you may reroll those dice and add the rolls to the damage. You can use this feature only once per turn.

Physicalist

You gain resistance to bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing damage from non-magical weapons.

The Grave Is No Bar

When you are reduced to 0 hit points, you may choose have 1 hit point instead. If you choose to do so, you may use your reaction to cast a spell with a casting time of 1 action. This feature can only be used once per short or long rest.

For each gained level of planeswalker, you lose a chance to take a level from the tail end of your former class. For instance, if you are a cleric and take the 1st level of planeswalker, you can no longer take the 20th level of cleric. This table compares the features of planeswalker to the features you give up at the end of your original class.

Planeswalker Meta

Ability Score Improvements

Taking at least 5 levels of planeswalker means giving up 2 ability score improvements, so the features granted by planeswalker are a bit top heavy, giving most of their benefits in the first five levels. It is possible to get +2 to an ability score by choosing at least two different colors for your Colored Mana Abilities, hence the final abilities granted by choosing the same color for all three Colored Mana Abilities is comparable to features found in other classes, but more powerful to make up for the loss.

Multiclassing from Bard

Bards don't have Plane Shift on their spell list, though they can acquire it by 14th level with Magical Secrets. This means they can't take the full seven levels of planeswalker.

Multiclassing from Warlock

Warlocks can learn Plane Shift through their Mystic Arcanum class feature, though they might not be as inclined to take levels of planeswalker because they don't have the Spellcasting class feature, so they only gain the spell slots shown in the Planeswalker table rather than the Muliclass Spellcaster table.
