Barbarians

Painted Totem Warrior (Variant)

Sometimes, the Totem Warrior’s abilities which mimic spellcasting are a little too much for a campaign, and thus the following features are intended as replacement features.

War Paint

  • This replaces Spirit Seeker

At 3rd level, you learn to decorate your body with images of — or related to your chosen Totems. The paint lasts for a number of hours equal to your proficiency bonus after which you must spend 1 hour to paint them again. This is considered light activity that you can do during a short rest.

If you are completely submerged in water, the paint is washed away, and you lose the benefit early.

While the War Paints persist and you're not wearing armor and not wielding a shield, your Armor Class is increased by 1.

Totem Shaman

  • This replaces Spirit Walker

At 10th level, you gain advantage on all Intelligence (Nature) checks.

Note

A Totem Warrior who wishes to use the Painted Warrior Variant must take both of the features listed, not just one or the other.

Dragon Totem

Unlike most Totem Warriors, you find kinship with the mighty dragons, and seek to emulate their tenacity and ferocity in and out of combat. Your connection with that of a dragon is of a much deeper spiritual bond, as you actually merge your soul with a dragon's immortal spirit.

Even though you make this bond, you're still free to choose whichever totem animals you want.

Dragon Spirit

Totemic Breath Weapon. At 3rd level, a dragon’s spirit has chosen you to be its herald. The spirit manifests as a colorless and ghostly glow around you while you’re raging.

  • While raging, you can use an Action to exhale a 15-foot cone of psychic energy. It deals 2d4 psychic damage and the targets subtract a 1d4 from their attack rolls and skill checks until your rage ends. A successful Sanity or Wisdom saving throw (whichever is better) halves the damage and the targets suffer no further effect. The DC of this ability equals to 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Constitution modifier.

You can use this ability a number of times equal to the amount of rages you have, and you must finish a long rest to regain all uses.

The breath weapon damage increases to 4d4 at 10th barbarian level, and 6d4 at 14th barbarian level.

The dragon spirit cannot be attacked by any means, and it occupies your space without any penalties. The spirit is only visible to you and the targets hit by your breath weapon.

Aspect of the Dragon

Dragon's Resilience. At 6th level, you gain a deeper connection with the dragon’s spirit and it provides you with increased survivability in harsh environments. The dragon's spirit also manifests ghostly dragon wings from your back that are visible to everyone at all times.

  • You become immune to exhaustion caused by extreme cold and extreme heat, and high altitude, as well as Frigid Water, do not affect you.
  • You can hold breath up to 15 minutes.
  • You can gain necessary nutrition by eating soft minerals, such as clay, but you can eat and drink as normal if you wish to. This ability does not allow you to burrow.
  • Your spectral wings grant you resistance against falling damage at all times.

Draconic Attunement

Dragon's Perseverance. At 14th level, your soul is attuned with the dragon’s spirit, and the spirit takes a vaguely humanoid form with draconic features, which mimics your every move.

The dragon spirit manifests itself in your space, even when you are not raging and it is visible to everyone, yet it remains transparent and colorless, and it cannot be harmed by any means.

  • You gain blindsight out to 30 feet while raging.
  • You and friendly creatures within 10 feet of you have advantage on saving throws against being charmed or frightened, whether or not you are raging.

Optional Rule: Spirit Ward

In addition to the basic totemic features, you gain an additional benefit if you choose all totems for one creature type.

If you take Aspect of the Beast and Totemic Attunement for the same creature as your Totem Spirit represents, your chosen Spirit wards you against assaults on your mind.

  • Spirit Ward. While raging, you have advantage on saves against being charmed or frightened.

Dragonflight Path

Some Dragon Totem Warriors learn to fly short distances with the aid of the spirit wings granted by Aspect of the Dragon.

Totemic Attunement (Eagle). While raging, you have a flying speed equal to your current walking speed. This benefit works only in short bursts; you fall if you end your turn in the air and nothing else is holding you a loft.

Proto-Dragon Path

Some Dragon Totem Warriors bond with the spirit of a proto-dragon, a primal draconic creature with immense resilience.

Totem Spirit (Bear). While raging, you have resistance to all damage except psychic damage. The spirit of the proto-dragon makes you tough enough to stand up to any punishment.
