Animal Speak
Due to your skinchanger heritage, you can speak to all beasts of the world in their own language.
Bear Form
As a Beorning, you are descended from the Skinchanger, Beorn. Whilst not directly a skinchanger, in moments of rage and excitement you can transform into the form of a Bear. Starting at 1st Level, you gain the ability to collect Fury. This is used to transform into Bear Form, and is spent on the various abilities unlocked in the Beorning Class. When in Bear Form, you unlock a Bite and Claw attack. These are treated as normal weapons, adding your Bear STR modifier to the attack roll and the damage. Fury can only be gained during a fight, and will quickly dissappear once out of it.
Gaining Fury
The main way to gain Fury is whilst in human form. Any succesful attack will gain 2 Fury. A critical hit will gain 3 Fury. Whilst in Bear Form, a critical hit will gain 2 Fury. If you are hit by an enemy in either form, you gain 1 Fury. If you are hit by a critical, you gain 2 fury. At level 7 Fury all fury gains increase by 1. At level 15 they increase by a further 1.
Losing Fury
Fury is used in the Beorning's abilities, both in and out of Bear Form. Any missed attack in Bear Form will cause you to lose 1 Fury. If you critically fail an attack in either form, your Fury is reduced to 0. If you go unconcious, you do not leave bear form unless you choose to do so. You lose 3 fury every turn until it reaches 0, when you are forced out of Bear Form as is normal.
Transforming
You may spend 1 Fury to transform into Bear Form. Whilst in Bear Form, you assume it's statistics, except for Wisdom, Intelligence and Charisma which remain the same. You can choose if your armor and weapons merge with your form, or drop to the ground, unless the item can also be worn in bear form. (DMs disgression)You also retain your current Health and Hit Die. Whenever you reach 0 Fury, you are forced back into Human Form.
Bear Statistics
Over time, your Bear Form will improve. Below is the level 1 Bear Form.
Bear Form
Medium, Neutral
- Armor Class 11
- Speed 40ft, Climb 30ft
STR DEX CON INT WIS CHA 16 (+3) 10 (+0) 14 (+2) -- (--) -- (--) -- (--)
- Condition Immunities None
Actions
Bite Melee Weapon Attack: Reach 5ft., one target. Hit STR mod + prof. bonus (1d6 + STR modifier piercing damage)
Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: Reach 5ft., one target. Hit STR mod + prof. bonus (1d6 + STR modifier slashing damage)
As your Bear Form levels up, it's AC will increase, as will the Bear's Statistics. AC is treated as normal, i.e. Dex in bear form will increase it. When the bear's statistics increase, they are treated like a standard Ability Score Improvement, i.e. You can put 2 points into Stat Increases, or you can choose a Feat. The increased Stats or Feat is only available in Bear Form. For instance, if you increase your Bear Intelligence by 2, this does not increase your Human Intelligence by 2. If you choose the Tough Feat, you only gain 2 additional HP per level whilst in Bear Form. Any Human stat increases in INT, WIS or CHA will carry over to Bear Form, as well as any Feats chosen in human form. Feats do not stack. Finally, your Bear form stats have a maximum of 24.
Using Abilities
When using abilities, you do not gain any fury from the attacks. Eg. Using a multiattack will not grant you 4 fury for hitting on both.
Fighting Style
You adopt a particular style of fighting as your specialty. Choose one of the following options.
Archery
You gain a +2 bonus to attack rolls you make with ranged weapons.
Defense
While you are wearing armor, you gain a +1 bonus to AC.
Dueling
When you are wielding a melee weapon in one hand and no other weapons, you gain a +2 bonus to damage rolls with that weapon.
Great Weapon Fighting
When you roll a 1 or 2 on a damage die for an attack you make with a melee weapon that you are wielding with two hands, you can reroll the die and must use the new roll, even if the new roll is a 1 or a 2. The weapon must have the two-handed or versatile property for you to gain this benefit.
Protection
When a creature you can see attacks a target other than you that is within 5 feet of you, you can use your reaction to im pose disadvantage on the attack roll. You must be wielding a shield.
Two-Weapon Fighting
When you engage in two-weapon fighting, you can add your ability modifier to the damage of the second attack.
Charge
If the player in Bear Form moves at least 20 feet straight toward a creature and then hits it with an attack on the same turn, that target must succeed on a Strength saving throw or be knocked prone. If the target is prone, the player can make another attack for 2 fury as a bonus action on that turn. The DC is determined as normal using your bear's strength modifier.
Multiattack
Whilst in Bear form, you may spend 2 Fury to make an attack with both your Bite and Claws. Treat each as a seperate attack.
Primal Strike
Starting at 6th level, your attacks in beast form count as magical for the purpose of overcoming resistance and immunity to nonmagical attacks and damage.
Hunter's Prey
At 6th level, you gain one of the following features of your choice.
Colossus Slayer
Your tenacity can wear down the most potent foes. When you hit a creature with a weapon attack, the creature takes an extra 1d8 damage if it’s below its hit point maximum. You can deal this extra damage only once per turn.
Giant Killer
When a Large or larger creature within 5 feet of you hits or misses you with an attack, you can use your reaction to attack that creature immediately after its attack, provided that you can see the creature.
Horde Breaker
Once on each of your turns when you make a weapon attack, you can make another attack with the same weapon against a different creature that is within 5 feet of the original target and within range of your weapon.
Mother Bear
If any ally is attacked within 5ft of you, you may redirect the attack onto you by spending 1 Fury. You may only do this once an attack has hit, and the attack will hit you regardless of your AC.
Lunch Time
Whilst in Bear Form, you may eat a creature which has been defeated in the last hour to regain HP equal to 1 Hit Dice + your Wisdom modifier. For large creatures and above, you gain 2 Hit Die back instead of 1. You may only use this action your Constitution modifier times per Long rest.
Defender of the Vale
Your Melee attacks in Human Form gain an additional 1d8 of damage. In addition, these attacks are now considered magical for the purpose of overcoming resistance and immunity to nonmagical attacks and damage. You gain an additional 1d8 at Level 16.
Unbearable Assault
In either form, you may spend 5 Fury to reroll an attack roll, unless the roll is a critical failure. At Level 15 you may reroll critical failures.
Wild Assault
You may spend 3 fury in either form to make an additional attack each turn. At level 15 this is reduced to 2 fury.
Relentless Wrath
Starting at 14th level, once per day, as a fight starts you may set your fury to half its maximum value and immediately transform into Bear form for no cost.
Successor to Beorn
As the representitive of all Beorning's in Middle Earth, you cannot afford to fail. Critical Failures no longer drop your Fury to 0, rather they reduce it by 5. At Level 19 critical failures reduce Fury by 3.
Beorn's Fury
Beorn was known for his anger in battle. If you have hit a target whilst in Human Form, you may spend 5 Fury to cause the hit to become a Critical Hit. You must roll a DC 10 Strength saving throw. On a fail, your weapon breaks.
Ancient Bear
You have seen many wars during your time in Middle Earth. Your hide has grown exceptionally thick, and is now resistant to non-magical attacks.
Beorn's Wrath
You have matched Beorn in your wrath against evil. All Fury costs (except for transforming itself) are reduced by 1.
Bear Attacks
As you level-up, your attacks in bear form will become more savage and deadly. The following table shows the damage die per level.
