Arcanism

Since before the time of the Netheril, the laws of magic have been scoured and studied for loopholes and new exceptions to power. While these laws have been written and rewritten by the gods, there have been those that would continue to bend them. The lessons of the past teach us that bending the weave too far can lead to a traumatic break, and so the wizards of today are cautious in their efforts to challenge and surpass common magical practice. Wizards following the tradition of arcanism are particularly resourceful and continue to find new ways to weave their magic.

Focus Bond

Starting at 2nd level, you learn a ritual that creates a magical bond between yourself and an arcane focus. You perform the ritual over the course of 1 hour, which can be done during a short rest. The focus must be within your reach throughout the ritual, at the conclusion of which you touch the focus and forge the bond.

After bonding a focus this way, you can’t be disarmed of it unless you are incapacitated. If it is on the same plane of existence, you can us a bonus action on your turn to teleport it to your empty hand. In addition, a hand holding a bonded focus is considered free for the purposes of somatic and material components.

This bond is broken when you perform this ritual again or when your bonded focus is destroyed.

Vestigial Magic

Beginning when you choose this tradition at 2nd level, you have learned to harness some of the residual magic left in your arcane foci and direct it toward your enemies. Immediately after casting a spell on your turn, you can use your bonus action to make a ranged spell attack against a creature you can see within 30 feet of you. A creature hit by this attack takes 1d4 force damage. To use this feature, you must have an arcane focus in hand.

Magical Supremacy

Beginning at 6th level, you can tap into your reserves of magical energy to enhance your spells with the secret spell preparation techniques you’ve discovered.

Spell Secrets. You learn two spell secrets of your choice, which are detailed under “Spell Secrets” below. You learn an additional spell secret of your choice at 10th and 14th level. Each time you learn a new spell secret, you can also replace one spell secret you know with a different one.

Preparing Secrets. Immediately after preparing your list of wizard spells or finishing a short rest, you can spend additional time making secret adjustments to a number of spells chosen from those you have prepared. For each chosen spell, you spend 10 minutes applying any one spell secret you know to it. Subtract the combined level of the chosen spells from the total levels worth of slots you can regain using Arcane Recovery. This reduction to your Arcane Recovery, and the modification to each chosen spell, applies until you prepare a new list of wizard spells at the end of a long rest.

A prepared spell can benefit from only one spell secret at a time and must meet the spell secret’s requirements. You can't add a spell secret to a spell if it would cause the number of slots you would regain from Arcane Recovery to go below zero.

Arcane Aegis

By 10th level, you are able to sculpt your reservoir of magical energy into a protective barrier around you. Your AC can’t be lower than 10 + the number of spell levels for which you have spell slots.

Casting by the Book

At 14th level, you have discovered how to imbue certain spells you scribe into your spellbook with latent magic, priming them for a later casting. These spells must be 5th-level or lower, have a casting time of 1 action, and must not consume material components or have components with a cost indicated.

As an action while holding your spellbook, you can rip the pages of a spell scribed this way out and cast it at its lowest level without expending a spell slot. The ripped spell pages are destroyed as part of casting the spell.

You can use this feature to cast a number of spells whose combined spell level is less than or equal to your Intelligence modifier (minimum one spell level). You regain use of this ability after finishing a long rest.

Spell Secrets

The spell secrets are presented in alphabetical order.

Bent. This secret can be applied to any spell with an area of effect. When you cast the spell, you can use your reaction to choose a point in space within the spell's area of effect. Any creature or location within the spell's initial dimensions is affected as described by the spell if it does not have total cover from the origin and this point.

Capable. This secret can be applied to any spell. When you become incapacitated and are concentrating on a spell prepared with this secret, you can maintain concentration on the spell by succeeding on a DC 20 constitution saving throw.

Compact. This secret can be applied to any spell. When you prepare a spell with this secret, it does not count against the number of spells you can prepare.

Merciful. This secret can be applied to any spell that deals damage and affects a single creature. When you would reduce a creature to 0 hit points with a spell modified by this secret, you can use your reaction to have the creature become stable and unconscious instead of dying.

Methodical. This secret can be applied to any spell. While the spell is prepared with this secret, copying the spell into a spellbook requires no gold and only 10 minutes for each level of the spell.

Signed. This secret can be applied to spells with verbal components. When you cast a spell prepared with this secret, you can use your reaction to perform special somatic components and cast the spell without its verbal component.

Telling. This secret can be applied to a spell that deals damage and affects a single creature. If a creature dies as a result of the damage caused by this spell, you can use your reaction to learn one thing the creature wished to protect or obtain in life.
