Starcraft Units Converted for 5e Ruleset

Words are hard, and intros are harder still. The following is a culmination of a decades long love of Starcraft and a newfound passion for Dungeons and Dragons. I'll never claim that this is balanced, or perfectly reflects the units from the games. I just think its cool, and I hope you have fun playing around with them.

The Swarm

Antithesis of the Firstborn, the Swarm are a collective of different species that have been assimilated and mutated to suit the Swarms collective need. Seemingly endless in numbers, the Swarm are insatiable in their hunger for flesh and a drive to assimilate all races into itself.

Singular Purpose The Swarm is guided by a singular being of towering intellect and power. A massive creature that commands and controls legions of creatures on multiple planes. Individually, the swarm usually displays some animal cunning, but an abysmal lack of intelligence.

Numbers Game The Swarms greatest strength is its ability to rebound from staggering losses in an incredibly short amount of time. The various races within it have been genetically manipulated to breed far faster than they normally would.

Zergling

The smallest of the Swarm, the Zergling is the epitome of the Swarm's massing attacks. A lone Zergling is a rare sight, generally traveling in packs of a dozen or more. Incredibly fast and vicious attackers, they will hunt down creatures for miles without stopping.


Swarm Zergling

Small monstrosity, chaotic evil

Burrow. The Zergling can use its bonus action to burrow underground. While burrowed, it has full cover from attacks. it can unburrow as a bonus action.

Creep Speed. The Zergling movement speed is doubled while on creep.

Metabolic Boost. The Zergling can move twice its speed as a free action. It regains this ability after a long rest.

Pack Tactics. The Zergling has advantage on an attack roll against a creature if at least one of the Zergling's allies is within 5 ft. of the creature and the ally isn't incapacitated.

Actions

Multiattack. The Zergling makes two attacks: one with its claws and one with its bite.

Claws. Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5ft., one target. Hit 5 (1d6 + 2) slashing damage.

Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit 5 (1d6 + 2) piercing damage plus 3 (1d6) acid damage.

Hydralisk

Resembling an enlarged snake with wickedly sharp claw arms, the Hydralisk is a terrifying opponent to face down. Even if you can keep it out of arms reach, it possesses a spitting acid that can melt through the strongest armor.

Medium monstrosity, chaotic evil

  • Speed 25ft., burrow 15 ft.

Multiattack. The Hydralisk makes two melee attacks or three ranged attacks.

Scythe. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5ft., one target. Hit 14 (2d10 + 3) slashing damage.

Needle Spines. Ranged Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, range 30/60 ft., one target. Hit 6 (1d6 + 3) piercing damage plus 10 (3d6) acid damage.

Roach

A squat, hulking figure, covered in armor plates and dripping acid, the Roach most resembles its common insect namesake. Roach’s can withstand an immense beating normally, but prefer to burrow underneath their targets and attack from behind their front lines.


Swarm Roach

Burrow. The Roach can use its bonus action to burrow underground. While burrowed, it has full cover from attacks. it can unburrow as a bonus action.

Creep Speed. The Roach movement speed is doubled while on creep.

Tunneling Claws. The Roach can move its burrow distance as a bonus action.

Pack Tactics. The Roach has advantage on an attack roll against a creature if at least one of the Roach's allies is within 5 ft. of the creature and the ally isn't incapacitated.

Actions

Multiattack. The Roach makes one melee attacks or two ranged attacks.

Claws. Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5ft., one target. Hit 11 (2d8 + 2) slashing damage.

Acid Saliva. Ranged Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, range 30/60 ft., one target. Hit 14 (4d6) acid damage.

Queen

Hulking half-humanoid monstrosities, the creatures know as Queens are one of the few rank and file Swarm that display higher intelligence. No Swarm nest is without a Queen, protecting the nest and overseeing the birth of new monsters.'


Swarm Queen

Large monstrosity, chaotic evil

Spellcasting. The Queen is a 9th-level spellcaster. Its spellcasting ability is Wisdom (spell save DC 15, +7 to hit with spell attacks). It has the following cleric spells prepared:

1st level (4 slots): Cure Wounds, Healing Word, Inflict Wounds

2nd level (3 slots): Blindness/Deafness

3rd level (3 slots): Animate Dead, Create Food and Water, Life Transference, Revivify

4th level (3 slots): Death Ward, Stone Shape

5th level (1 slots): Contagion, Insect Plague

Actions

Creep Tumor. The Queen can implant a porous mass into the ground as a bonus action. The mound has full cover, AC 10 and 3 hit points. Every round it is in the ground, creep spreads from it at a rate of 10 ft. per round, to a maximum of 100 ft.

Claws. Melee Weapon Attack: + to hit, reach 5ft., one target. Hit 10 (2d8 + 1) slashing damage.

Acid Spines. Ranged Weapon Attack: + to hit, range 30/60 ft., one target. Hit 6 (2d4 + 1) piercing damage plus 7 (2d6) acid damage.

Ultralisk

A titan reborn into the world, an Ultralisk is an engine of destruction matched only by a few creatures. Towering hundreds of feet tall, a single Ultralisk can demolish a castle in minutes, and leave a trail of corpses in its wake.



Swarm Ultralisk

Gargantuan monstrosity, chaotic evil


  • Armor Class 24 (natural)
  • Hit Points 300 (18d20 + 5)
  • Speed 40ft.

  • Damage Resistances bludgeoning, piercing and slashing from nonmagical attacks.

  • Senses darkvision 60 ft., passive Perception 11
  • Languages None
  • Challenge 20 (25000 XP)

Siege Monster. The Ultralisk's attacks are considered siege

Creep Speed. The Ultralisk movement speed is doubled while on creep.

Actions

Multiattack. The Ultralisk makes four attacks; one with its horn, one with its bite and two with its kaiser blades. It can use its Swallow instead of a bite.

Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +14 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit 20 (2d12 + 7) piercing damage. If the target is a creature, it is grappled (excape DC 17). Until this grapple ends, the target is restrained, and the Ultralisk can't bite another target.

Horn. Melee Weapon Attack: +14 to hit, reach 15 ft., one target. Hit 18 (2d10 + 7) piercing damage.

Kaiser Blades. Melee Weapon Attack: +14 to hit, reach 20 ft., one target. Hit 34 (6d8 + 7) slashing damage. Any creature within 5 ft. of the target takes half the damage the target received.

Stomp. Melee Weapon Attack: +14 to hit, reach 5 ft., all prone targets. Hit 33 (4d12 + 7) bludgeoning damage.

Swallow. The Ultralisk makes one bite attack against a Large or smaller creature it is grappling. If the attack hits, the target takes the bite's damage, the target is swallowed, and the grapple ends. While swallowed, the creature is in blinded and restrained, it has total cover against attacks and other effects outside the Ultralisk, and it takes 8d6 acid damage at the start of each of the Ultralisk's turns.

If the Ultralisk takes 30 or more damage on a single turn from a creature insde it, the Ultralisk must succeed a DC 16 Constitution saving throw at the end of that turn or regurgitate all swallowed creatures, which fall prone in a space within 10 ft. of the Ultralisk. If the Ultralisk dies, a swallowed creature is no longer restrained by it and can escape from the corpse by using 30 ft. of movement, exiting prone.

Legendary Actions

The Ultralisk can take 3 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action option can be used at a time and only at the end of another creature's turn. The Ultralisk regains spent legendary actions at the start of its turn.

Horn. The Ultralisk makes one horn attack.

Charge. The Ultralisk can move up to half its speed. Any creature in its path must make a DC 21 Strenght saving throw or be knocked prone.

Stomp (Costs 2 Actions). The Ultralisk makes a stomp attack.
