Otherworldly Patron

The beings that serve as patrons for warlocks are mighty inhabitants of other planes of existence—not gods, but almost godlike in their power. Various patrons give their warlocks access to different powers and invocations, and expect significant favors in return. Some patrons collect warlocks, doling out mystic knowledge relatively freely or boasting of their ability to bind mortals to their will. Other patrons be-stow their power only grudgingly, and might make a pact with only one warlock. Warlocks who serve the same patron might view each other as allies, siblings, or rivals.

The Great Wyrm

Your patron is the Great Wyrm, older than ancient and possessor of power both awesome and terrible. For you to be beholden of such power is a privelege. The secrets you have learned from the Great Wyrm have bestowed upon you great powers, and as you learn more from your patron, the might of your patron's will entwines itself upon your very being.

Expanded Spell List

The Great Wyrm lets you choose from an expanded list of spells when you learn a warlock spell. The following spells are added to the warlock spell list for you.

Great Wyrm Expanded Spells
Spell Level Spells
1st absorb elements, feather fall
2nd Nystul's magic aura, scorching ray
3rd call lightning, protection from energy
4th ice storm, vitriolic sphere
5th cloudkill, legend lore

Breath Weapon

At 1st level you gain a breath weapon useable once as an action. After your attack, roll a 1d6. On a success of 5 or 6, your breath weapon recharges and can be used on your next turn. If your roll is unsuccessful, you must wait 1 minute before you can use your breath weapon.

Each time you use your breath weapon, you can choose whether it takes the form of a 15-foot cone or a 30-foot line. This breath weapon deals 1d6 points of force damage. A successful Dexterity save halves the damage. The DC for the roll is equal to your warlock spell save DC.

As you gain more levels, your breath attack deals more damage. At 5th level your breath attack deals 2d6 force damage, 3d6 force damage at 11th level, and 4d6 force damage at 17th level.

Your patron has allowed that some invocations that affect eldritch blast can also affect your breath weapon, though some of these invocations have minor changes made to suit your breath weapon attacks. As you gain warlock class levels, more breath effect invocations become available to you when you meet their prerequisites.

Great Resistance

The Great Wyrm has grown beyond the elemental forces that governs a dragon's existence and has imparted some of that ability onto you. At 6th level, when you finish a short rest, choose a damage type from acid, cold, fire, lightning, or poison. You gain resistance to your chosen damage type until the end of your next short rest or long rest, whichever occurs first.

Dreadful Presence

At 10th level you gain advantage on saving throws against the frightened condition, and your patron bestows upon you a lesser version of frightful presence. Your choice of a maximum amount of creatures within sight equal to your Charisma modifier must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw equal to your warlock's spell save DC or become frightened for 1 minute.

A creature can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success. If a creature's saving throw is a success or the effect ends for it, the creature is immune to your frightful presence for the next 24 hours.

Once you use this feature, you can’t use it again until you finish a short or long rest.

Warlock Patron: The Great Wyrm

Essence of the Wyrm

At 14th level, your patron lets you channel a portion of its innate spellcasting. Choose three spells from the Great Wyrm expanded spell list. You may cast each of these spells without expending a spell slot once per long rest. You may replace your chosen spells and regain use of this ability at the end of a long rest.

Additionally your patron has granted you the gift of flight. You have been given access to the wings of the patron invocation. This invocation doesn't count against the total number of invocations you can have.

Warlock Patron: The Great Wyrm

Much of this material was taken from Dragon Magic, which first introduced the dragonfire adept, and there was inspiration, as well, from the sorceror's class features. Also the 5th edition Monster Manual provided much aid with fine tuning the Great Wyrm patron. Many thanks to those who took the time to read and critique this homebrew.
