# Resting Heroic though they might be, adventurers can’t spend every hour of the day in the thick of exploration, social interaction, and combat. They need rest—time to sleep and eat, tend their wounds, refresh their minds and spirits for spellcasting, and brace themselves for further adventure. Adventurers can take short rests in the midst of an adventuring day and a long rest to end the day. This variant rule makes resting less effective to the adventurers, forcing them to be more cautious when choosing their fights. Healing is done exclusively using the hit dice pool of each character. ## Short Rest A short rest is a period of downtime, at least 8 hours long, during which a character does nothing more strenuous than eating, drinking, reading, and tending to wounds. A character can spend one or more Hit Dice at the end of a short rest, up to the character’s maximum number of Hit Dice, which is equal to the character’s level. For each Hit Die spent in this way, the player rolls the die and adds the character’s Constitution modifier to it. The character regains hit points equal to the total. The player can decide to spend an additional Hit Die after each roll. A character regains all spent Hit Dice upon finishing a long rest, as explained below. ``` ``` ## Long Rest A long rest is a period of extended downtime, at least 24 hours long, during which a character sleeps or performs light activity: reading, talking, eating, or standing watch for no more than 16 hours. If the rest is interrupted by a period of strenuous activity—at least 1 hour of walking, fighting, casting spells, or similar adventuring activity—the characters must begin the rest again to gain any benefit from it. After the first hour of resting, the character can spend Hit Dices as if it was a short rest. At the end of a long rest, a character regains all spent Hit Dice. After finishing resting and regaining all spent Hit Dice and hit points, the character may spend Hit Dice again, as if it was a short rest. A character can’t benefit from more than one long rest in a 7 days period, and a character must have at least 1 hit point at the start of the rest to gain its benefits. ### Recuperating You can use downtime between adventures to recover from a debilitating injury, disease, or poison. After three days of downtime spent recuperating, you can make a DC 15 Constitution saving throw. On a successful save, you can choose one of the following results: End one effect on you that prevents you from regaining hit points. For the next 24 hours, gain advantage on saving throws against one disease or poison currently affecting you.

# Death Rules This is another way to see the Death Saving Throw mechanic. In this version, any character is less likely to die the first time it drops to 0 hit points, but falling in combat has consequences that remains after you get up, and it will be harder to avoid those consequences each subsequent time the character falls. This homebrew rule is meant to make the falling less lethal, but more significant. Any player can feel the pain of have fallen in combat, without killing its character. ### Instant Death Massive damage can kill you instantly. When damage reduces you to 0 hit points and there is damage remaining, you die if the remaining damage equals or exceeds your hit point maximum. For example, a cleric with a maximum of 12 hit points currently has 6 hit points. If she takes 18 damage from an attack, she is reduced to 0 hit points, but 12 damage remains. Because the remaining damage equals her hit point maximum, the cleric dies. ### Falling in Combat If damage reduces you to 0 hit points and fails to kill you, you must make a Constitution or Intelligence Saving Throw (you choose the ability you use) against a DC of 10 or half of the damage that dropped you to 0 hit points (whichever is higher). **On a succees** you are knocked prone, incapacited and you can not stand up for 1 minute (You still can crawl, talk, interact with objects that do not require an Use an Object Action, and stand up only if you are using something to keep you stand, like a wall, a staff, or something else). If you did't move on your turn, you can take a special action to expend an Endurance Dice and seven uses of a healer's kit to stabilize yourself and end your turn (If you don't have any Endurance Dice to expend, you gain a level of exhaustion when you take this action). **On a fail** you fall Unconscious. Both conditions ends if you regain any hit points. ### Endurance Dice You have a pool of three d20 Endurance Dices, wich you must expend when you roll a Death Saving Throw. You regain one expended Endurance Dice when you finish a long rest. ### Death Saving Throws Whenever you start your turn with 0 hit points, you must make a special saving throw, called a death saving throw, to determine whether you creep closer to death or hang onto life. Unlike other saving throws, this one isn't tied to any ability score. You are in the hands of fate now, aided only by spells and features that improve your chances of succeeding on a saving throw. Expend one of your Endurance Dices to make the Death Saving Throw. If the roll is 10 or higher, you succeed and become stable (see below). Otherwise, you fail and must wait until your next turn to make another Death Saving Throw. ``` ``` **Rolling a 20**: When you make a death saving throw and roll a 20 on the d20, you regain 1 hit point, and become incapacited for 1 minute. Any kind of healing ends this condition. **Rolling a 1**: If you roll a 1 on the d20, you take a level of exhaustion. **Damage at 0 Hit Points**: If you take any damage while you have 0 hit points, instead you take one level of exhaustion. If the damage equals or exceeds your hit point maximum, you die. If you start your turn with 0 hit points and you **do not** have any Endurance Dice to expend, you take one level of exhaustion. ### Stabilizing a Creature The best way to save a creature with 0 hit points is to heal it. If healing is unavailable, the creature can at least be stabilized so that it isn't killed by the extenuation caused by failed death saving throws. You can use your action to administer first aid to an unconscious creature and attempt to stabilize it, which requires a successful DC 10 Wisdom (Medicine) check. A stable creature doesn't make death saving throws, even though it has 0 hit points. The creature stops being stable, falls unconscious (without any Saving Throw to prevent it) and must start making death saving throws again, if it takes any damage while it has 0 hit points. A stable creature that isn't healed regains 1 hit point after 1d4 hours.

# Optional ## Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Characters who fall in combat are experienced adventurers that are hardly affected by the PTSD, but if you want to bring more drama to your game, you can use this optional rule to put more stress on who have fallen. ### Near death experience Every time a Character wakes up after dropping to 0 hit points, it makes a special saving throw, called a Trauma Saving Throw, to determine whether you have a mental injury associated with your deadly experience. Unlike other saving throws, this one isn't tied to any ability score, but you are proficient with it. The DC of the Trauma Saving Throw is 8 + each level of exhaustion obtained and every failed Death Saving Throw while you were unconcious. On a failed Trauma Saving Throw, the character suffers long term madness. A character afflicted with long-term madness is subjected to an effect from the Long-Term Madness table for 1d10 × 10 hours. When the long term madnss finishes, the character must make another Trauma Saving Throw agains the same DC. On a fail, it suffers indefinite madness. A character afflicted with indefinite madness gains a new character flaw from the Indefinite Madness table that lasts until cured. ``` ```

A Greater Restoration spell or more powerful magic is required to rid a character of indefinite madness.
