# Lancer
With wild abandon, a half-elf appears to soar as she leaps through the air above an entire squadron of orc raiders. Her eyes are transfixed on their leader who has been peppering her party with javelins from behind the frontline. Her halberd finds it’s home in the Orc’s chest as she dives into him like a bolt out of the blue.
## Into the Breach
Lancers are ferocious fighters who soar into the heart of the battlefield with their devastating vaulting polearm attacks. Able to perform extraordinary feats of athleticism, Lancers are able to leap significantly higher than the average warrior. If you've met a Lancer on the field of combat, you know that there are few as courageous and reckless in equal measure.
## Gambits and Blunders
Lancers rely on special battlefield tactics called "Gambits", powerful abilities that give Lancers and incredible edge in battle, as well as otherworldly maneuverability. However, for every Gambit there is a chance to Blunder, to fail spectacularly as your waxen wings melt from flying too close to the sun.
## Relentless Assault
The Lancer finds and creates every opportunity to engage with her foes. Masters of breaching every obstacle that can be thrown at them. Lancers are able to find balance between the strength needed to pierce through armor, and the skill to thread the needle.
## Words of Wisdom
Those who choose to take up the mantle of Lancer follow a proud and courageous martial tradition, forged by those daring heroes who would seemingly fly into the heart of battle, their spears held true, in order to slay their opponents. To be a Lancer is not for the faint of heart, for every battle is quite literally a leap of faith. The Lancer is defined by their fearlessness and their ferocity in overwhelming their enemies as quickly as possible, waging a delicate balance between risk and reward, often putting themselves in harm's way in order to employ their battlefield Gambits. Lancers are the Skyward Vanguards of battle, first to engage and often last to leave.

## New Fighter Archtype: Lancer
Lancers are agile Polearm fighters who use a gambit system to risk great failure for great reward, literally jumping over enemy lines to focus on stronger targets.
### Bonus Proficiency
When you choose this archetype at 3rd level, you gain proficiency in one of the following skills of your choice: *Acrobatics, Athletics, Intimidation, Perception, or Survival.* Alternatively, you can learn *one language* of your choice.
### The Skyward Vanguard
Starting at 3rd level, the Lancer has learned how to fall in equal measure to vaulting. You now receive no falling damage as long as the total distance of falling is not greater than the your total movement speed.
Additionally, the lancer can leap and additional 5ft with a 5ft running start.
### The Lancer's Gambit
When you choose this archetype at 3rd level, you learn Gambits that are fueled by slots called Gambit Marks.
In order to use Gambits, player must be using one of the following: spear, glaive, halberd, pike, or lance.
***Gambits.*** You learn three Gambits of your choice, which are detailed under "Gambits" on the next page. Many Gambits enhance an attack in some way. You can use only one Gambit per attack. You learn two additional Gambits of your choice at 7th, 10th, and 15th level. Each time you learn new Gambits, you can also replace one Gambit you know with a different one.
***Gambit Marks.*** You have four gambit marks. A gambit mark is expended when you use it. You regain all of your expended gambit marks when you finish a short or long rest. You can regain 1 gambit mark when you deal a killing blow with a Spear, Halberd, Glauber, Pike, or Lance to a creature of significant threat (DM’s discretion). You gain another gambit mark at 7th level and one more at 15th level.
***Gambit Die.*** Starting at level 3, you will use a d4 anytime a gambit die is called for. The value of this die increases by one dice size at 7th, 10th, and 15th level.
***Saving Throws.*** Some of your gambits require your target to make a saving throw to resist the gambit's effects. The saving throw DC is calculated as follows:
**Gambit save DC = 8 + your proficiency bonus + your STR or DEX modifier (your choice)**
### Take Flight!
Starting at 7th level, Your gambit die is now a d6.
Additionally, you can cast jump on yourself at will, without expending a Gambit's Mark or materials.
### Breach
When you take the Attack action and successfully hit with a glaive, halberd, Lance, or spear, you can use a bonus action to make a melee attack with advantage to further thrust your weapon deeper into your target. The damage for this bonus attack is equal to your Gambit die + STR modifier and is piercing damage.
### Veteran's Gambit
At 10th level, your Gambit die becomes a d8. At 18th level, they increase once more to a d10 and you gain one final Gambit's Mark.
### Reckless Resolve
Starting at 15th level, when you roll initiative and have no Gambit's Marks remaining, you regain one Gambit mark.
In addition, if you are knocked unconscious during combat and have exhausted all gambit's marks, you may spend one death saving throw to regain three gambit's marks.
### Dragoon
Starting at 18th level, you have earned the title of Dragoon. You now can double the amount of Gambit dice you use whenever you are rolling for damage. In addition, you take no falling damage as long as the total distance fell is no greater than twice your movement speed.
