These grotesque creatures revel in sowing misery wherever they go, gleefully ruining the lives of innocents in their mad pursuits, or simply for their own enjoyment. Hagbairn are the product of a hag's influence. Whether descended from a hag ancestor or affected by hag witchcraft, a hagbairn inherits many of its progenitor's traits, including the ability to create an illusory appearance and cast rituals. This also includes some of the less enviable qualities of hags, such as a repulsive appearance or a sadistic streak. For your hagbairn, roll on the Hagbairn Characteristics table or choose an option from it. You're also free to come up with your own characteristic if none of the suggestions below fit your character. {{classTable ##### Hagbairn Characteristics | d8 | Characteristic | |:-:|:-| | 1 | You have long, matted hair that immediately regrows when cut. | | 2 | You look elderly and frail regardless of your age and health. | | 3 | No matter how much your clothes are cleaned, they always look dirty. | | 4 | A prominent, hairy wart sits on your nose. | | 5 | Your skin is covered in scabs and weeping sores. | | 6 | Your teeth are unnaturally long, blackened, and razor-sharp. | | 7 | Your breath smells like a rotting corpse. | | 8 | A milky white film covers your eyes, though you can still see normally. | }} \column ## Hagbairn Traits - ***Ability Score Increase.*** Increase one ability score by 2, and increase a different one by 1, or increase three different scores by 1. - ***Languages.*** You can speak, read, and write Common and one other language that you and your DM agree is appropriate for the character. - ***Type.*** You are a Fey. - ***Life Span.*** Hagbairn have a life span of 120 years on average. - ***Size.*** You are Medium. - ***Speed.*** Your walking speed is 30 feet. - ***Claws.*** You have sharp claws that you can use to make unarmed strikes. If you hit with them, you deal 1d6 + your Strength modifier slashing damage, instead of the bludgeoning damage normal for an unarmed strike. - ***Darkvision.*** You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light and in darkness as if it were dim light. You discern colors in that darkness only as shades of gray. - ***Disguise.*** You can cast the *Disguise Self* spell at will, without expending a spell slot. Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma is your spellcasting ability for this spell when you cast it with this trait (choose when you select this race). - ***Hag Rituals.*** You learn two 1st-level spells of your choice that have the ritual tag, and can cast these spells as rituals. At 5th level, you learn a 2nd-level spell of your choice that has the ritual tag, and can cast it as a ritual. Your spellcasting ability for the spells you cast using this trait is the one you chose for your Disguise trait. ![](https://images-wixmp-ed30a86b8c4ca887773594c2.wixmp.com/f/5fb305ec-1809-4853-a784-82ebd298bf27/d9xydwb-349a19d5-54ef-4f62-9246-ed0b08031e57.jpg/v1/fill/w_1000,h_758,q_75,strp/morgantha_s_pastry_cart_by_robrey_d9xydwb-fullview.jpg?token=eyJ0eXAiOiJKV1QiLCJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiJ9.eyJzdWIiOiJ1cm46YXBwOjdlMGQxODg5ODIyNjQzNzNhNWYwZDQxNWVhMGQyNmUwIiwiaXNzIjoidXJuOmFwcDo3ZTBkMTg4OTgyMjY0MzczYTVmMGQ0MTVlYTBkMjZlMCIsIm9iaiI6W1t7ImhlaWdodCI6Ijw9NzU4IiwicGF0aCI6IlwvZlwvNWZiMzA1ZWMtMTgwOS00ODUzLWE3ODQtODJlYmQyOThiZjI3XC9kOXh5ZHdiLTM0OWExOWQ1LTU0ZWYtNGY2Mi05MjQ2LWVkMGIwODAzMWU1Ny5qcGciLCJ3aWR0aCI6Ijw9MTAwMCJ9XV0sImF1ZCI6WyJ1cm46c2VydmljZTppbWFnZS5vcGVyYXRpb25zIl19.50juIZ3NQ_-BjNWOzX1EkU4ZN-pyPZoetPHZJxpdb48){position:absolute;bottom:-125px;left:0px;width:850px} ![](https://i.imgur.com/Iu6blc4.png){position:absolute;bottom:175px;left:0px;} {{pageNumber, auto}} {{footnote PART 1 | RACE}} \page ## Hagbairn Feats #### Hag Magic *Prerequisite: Hagbairn race* ___ You learn to channel the magic of your hag progenitor. You learn one cantrip, one 1st-level spell, and one 2nd-level spell of your choice. These spells must be from the Enchantment, Illusion, or Necromancy school of magic. You can cast the 1st and 2nd-level spell without expending a spell slot. Once you cast either of these spells in this way, you can’t cast that spell in this way again until you finish a long rest. You can also cast these spells using spell slots you have of the appropriate level. The spells’ spellcasting ability is the ability you chose for your Disguise trait. #### Shifting Guise *Prerequisite: Hagbairn race, 8th level* ___ You can change your appearance on an even deeper level. You can cast the *Alter Self* spell on yourself at will, without requiring a spell slot or components. The spell's spellcasting ability is the ability you chose for your Disguise trait. ## Hagbairn Magic Items #### Cauldron of Mischief *Wondrous item, very rare (requires attunement by a hagbairn spellcaster)* ___ This Small, black cast-iron cauldron looks battered and weathered by centuries of use. The image of an eye is etched on its side. You can use the cauldron to augment your spellcasting in the following ways. **Toil.** When you cast a spell as a ritual, you can use this cauldron to accelerate the ritual, adding only 1 minute to the spell's casting time instead of 10. **Trouble.** Using this cauldron, you can cast any spell you know of 5th level or lower that does not have the ritual tag as a ritual. Once this property is used, it cannot be used again until the next dawn. #### Hag Eye *Wondrous item, rare (requires attunement by a hagbairn)* ___ This grotesque, disembodied eye has the illusory appearance of a gem of equivalent size and shape. You can use your action to see through the eye until you use your action to switch back to your senses. While seeing through the eye, you see as if benefiting from your own senses, and you are blinded to your own surroundings. If the eye is destroyed while you are attuned to it, you are blinded until the next dawn. \column #### Jar of Filth *Wondrous item, uncommon* ___ This Tiny, lidded glass jar is filled to the brim with a mix of substances of varying shapes, textures, and states of decay. While opened, it gives off a revolting smell, though not one powerful enough to debilitate creatures. The jar never runs out. Only hags and hagbairn can make use of its contents. As an action, you can scoop a portion of the filth in the jar and smear it on a Tiny object that isn't being worn or carried, rendering the smeared filth magically invisible and odorless. A creature other than you who willingly touches an object smeared with this filth must succeed on a DC 15 Constitution saving throw or suffer a random disease for 7 days, as listed in the *Contagion* spell. The smeared filth lasts for 24 hours or until you use the jar to smear filth on another object. #### Signet of the Covenant *Wondrous item, legendary (requires attunement by a spellcaster)* ___ This item comes in a set of at least three identical rings, each of which must be attuned to simultaneously as part of a joint ritual to form a coven. At least one of the creatures attuning to one of the rings must be a hag or hagbairn, and none of the creatures must be already part of a coven. If the attunement ends on one of the rings, the creature the ring is attuned to leaves the coven, and their ring is destroyed. If the coven has fewer than three members, the attunement to the rings ends for its remaining members. A spellcaster can join the coven by taking part in a one-hour ritual with all of the coven's members, which can be performed during a short or long rest. The creature must not already be part of a coven, and must be able to attune to at least one magic item to take part in this ritual. Upon finishing the ritual, the creature joins the coven, and an identical ring appears on one of its fingers of its choice, to which it immediately attunes. While attuned to this ring, it cannot be removed from your body against your will while you live. You can remove it at any time, however, and doing so ends your attunement to it. All members of a coven pool together their magical energy and knowledge. By invoking the power of the ring, you can cast a spell any member of your coven knows, using a spell slot belonging to any willing member of your coven. The coven member whose spell or spell slot you are using must be on the same plane of existence as you. You cast the spell using its normal casting time, providing any components required. Additionally, as an action, you can speak into your ring, sending a short message of twenty-five words or less to one or more members of your coven you choose, regardless of distance. A recipient hears the message from its own ring, and can answer in a like manner immediately. If a recipient is on a different plane of existence from you, your message fails to reach them. {{pageNumber, auto}} {{footnote PART 2 | EXTRAS}} \page # Acknowledgments ## Art This brew uses art assets created by a variety of talented artists.
