\page # Rules Exhaustion is different from other effects. Exhaustion typically acts like a constant condition, however, a majority of the gameplay elements associated with Exhaustion are treated outside of combat, which contrasts the elements that make up the super-mechanic known as Conditions. This document's aim is to define some of the terms for exhaustions as well as update the ruleset for Exhaustion and treat it more like its own mechanic rather than a weird condition. ### Exhausting Examples - Failing a series of consecutive ability checks - Going unconcious more than 3 times before a long rest - Failing a Constitution check for any action relating to stamina over a long period of time (marching, staying awake, swimming, etc) - Failing a Constitution check or automatic failiure against necessary actions (dehydration, starvation, or suffocation) - Sleeping in armor - Traveling within a harsh environment for longer than 1 hour - Being encumbered for more than 1 hour or exceeding your push, drag, or lift weight for more than 1 minute - Having a long rest interrupted by a combat encounter - Becoming affected by spells or abilities such as *Ray of Enfeeblement*, *Energy Drain*, or *Otto's Irresistible Dance* - Becoming Inflicted with certain Poisons and Diseases - Any effect that causes Hit Dice loss when there are none remaining - Recovering health after your health maximum has been reduced by more than 1/4 of your original health maximum ### Recovering - Resting for 12 hours instead of the standard 8 and receiving sufficient food and drink - Being affected by *Lesser Resoration*, *Greater Restoration*, and *Heal* - Being affected by *Lay on Hands* by expending 15 health without healing - Drinking certain potions or ingesting certain herbs ``` ``` ### Exhaustion Chart | Level | Effect | |:--:|:----------| | 0 | No effect | | 1+ | Cannot benefit from advantage on any attacks, checks or saving throws. | | 2+ | Disadvantage on all attacks and cannot maintain concentration on spells. Casting a spell requires a DC 10 Constitution check. (Cannot use Aim) | | 3+ | Disadvantage on all checks and saving throws. | | 4+ | Speed and Maximum hit points are reduced to half. | | 5+ | Cannot attack or cast spells. In addition, you gain a Death Point.| | 6 | Drop to 1 hit point, cannot regain hit points and have a speed of 5 feet. | | 7 | Death. | ### Exhaustion Notes - Monsters can also undergo exhaustion, the same table applies with the exception that levels 3-5 are removed. Once they receive 4 levels of exhaustion the monster dies - NPCs follow the same table as Players do for the purposes of Exhaustion - DCs for continued exhaustion do not go up, but rather happen more often at higher levels of Exhaustion.
