## Resting
This homebrew seek to bring balance to how the resting rules affect the various modes of game play and apply a usable form of gritty realism. These rules are meant be used in conjunction with good DM practices around adventuring days, and narrative devices (e.g. time as a resource, threat of encounters). The Rally mechanic achieves two goals. Firstly, it creates a more applicable system for regular traveling and non-combat adventures, along with dungeon diving or combat heavy adventures. Secondly, resting becomes a tactical decision with trade offs. ### Balance Fixes * Modify any spell with a duration of 8 hours and a target of "Self" to have the duration "24 Hours". * Modify any attuned magical item with a recharge rate of less than "24 Hours" to "24 Hours". * Use One D&D Exhuastion condtion and rules * Use One D&D Healer Feat ### Short Rest A short rest is a period of downtime of 8 hours or 1 hour during a Rally. #### Requirements During the rest a character performs only light activity, such as reading, talking, eating, and tending to wounds. #### Benefits **Spend HD to Heal.**:: A character can spend one or more Hit Dice at the end of a short rest, up to the character’s maximum number of Hit Dice, which is equal to the character's level. For each Hit Die spent in this way, the player rolls the die and adds the character’s Constitution modifier to it. The character regains hit points equal to the total. The player can decide to spend an additional Hit Die after each roll. ### Long rest A Long Rest is a period of extended downtime of 24 hours or 8 hours during a Rally. #### Requirements A character can only long rest once a day and must have at least 1 Hit Point. During the Rest, a character sleeps for at least 6 hours and performs only light activity, such as reading, talking, eating, and tending to wounds. #### 8 Hour Benefits **Regain All HP.**:: You regain all lost Hit Points. **Regain HD.**:: Regain hit dice equal to half your total rounded up. #### 24 Hour Benefits 8 Hour benefits plus: **HP Max Restored.**:: If your Hit Point Maximum was reduced, it returns to normal. **Ability Scores Restored.**:: If any of your Ability Scores were reduced, they return to normal. **Exhaustion Reduced.**:: If you are Exhausted, your level of exhaustion decreases by 1. ### Interrupting a Rest A rest can be interuppted by Combat, Casting a spell other than a Cantrip, or exertion other than light activity. If a Long Rest lasted at least the duration of a Short Rest, you immiedetly completed a Short Rest. You can resume a Long Rest immediately after an interruption. If you do so, the rest requires 1 additional hour to finish per interruption. ### Rally In high stakes situations, you can push yourself on less rest. At any time, the party can collectively decide to Rally for 24 hours. When you do so you mark the time and day. A Rally is a continous session that can be extended, and each day in that session will cost the members of the party a level of exhuastion when the Rally ends. A party cannot begin or extend a Rally if the resulting level of exhuastion would bring a member to 10 levels of exhuastion. **Fast Rest Time**:: You complete rests in less time. **Extend**:: Each 24 hours after you began the Rally, the party can decide to extend it another 24 hours. **Dismiss**:: A Rally can be ended at any time except during a rest. **Exhuastion**:: When a Rally ends, each member of the pary gains a level of exhuastion, plus an additional level for each additional day the Rally was extended. ### Optional Rest Rules #### No Sleep A rest that lasts at least 8 hours usually includes at least 6 hours of sleep. A character makes a DC 10 constitution saving throw to avoid a level of exhaustion every 24 hours of being awake, and the DC goes up by 5 for each additional 24 hours. \page #### Safe Spots A Long Rest can only occur in a comfortable, non-hostile Safe Spot; a place that doesn't require keeping watch. When using this rule, you can not Long Rest during a Rally. In the wilderness Safe Spots are very hard to come by. On journeys you may not find any places to long rest between settlements. If it's possible that a safe place can be found or made in the wilderness, the DM may allow the party to make a survival check once a day to find and secure it. The DC starts at 15 and increases depending on how unlikely it is to secure a safe space. #### Healing Kits Once between long rests, after you are done rolling Hit Dice to heal during a Short Rest, a use of a Healers Kit and a successful DC 10 Medicine check can restore additional hit points to you. The Medicine check is made by whatever character is tending to the wounds. On a successful check, you regain hit points equal to the number of Hit Dice you spent plus your constitution modifier. A failed check spends a use of the kit to no effect, and can't be attempted again until the next short rest. If the character tending the wounds succeeds the check and has the Healer Feat, they may instead expend two uses of a Healers Kit to restore even more hit points. When this is done, you gain the hit points from the successful check and additional hit points equal to the Healer's proficiency bonus for each Hit Dice you spent. ### Resting shown in Practice This uses the homebrew and all optional rules. #### Journey from Home to Dungeon The party sets out from town on a main road. It's normally a 5 day journey to their destination. On the first night of their journey, they are able to make camp near the road and short rest for 8 hours. In the morning, they have to depart the main road and travel through the woods. They have some minor scrapes and challenges, but nothing significant. They make themselves a camp site for another 8 hour short rest and sleep in shifts to keep watch. On day 3 they get ambushed by a roaming bandit party and nearly get wiped. After they clear the woods, the Ranger (given advantage) suceeds his Surviaval check DC 15 and finds the hidden Druid's Grotto nearby, where the party is given shelter to long rest for a full day During that day they Roleplay and work on some downtime activities. They set out on day 5 and have an uneventful day and short rest for 8 hours that evening. On day 6 they arive at the dungeon entrace. #### Dungeon Delving They fight their way into the dungeon and get a little dinged up. After clearing a small room they begin a Rally at 11am and take a short rest for an hour. They keep fighting in and get badly hurt by some traps. They find a fortifiable position to short rest for another hour, and the Ranger uses his Healing Kit to patch up the party. They continue to acheive their objective and trek their way back out. Some monsters crept in through the dungeon entrance and a bad skirmish takes place. As they exit the dungeon half the party is on death's door. They short rest for an hour at the dungeon entrance, but they didn't have many Hit Dice left to heal and are in rough shape. #### Journey Home The Ranger asks about finding a safe spot to long rest. No check is required to tell him that the nearest safe spots; The Druid Grotto 2 days back the way they came from or a small hamlet 1 day in the opposite direction. They decide they can make the journey to the Grotto. They carry on through the night and into the morning. Once they have been awake for 24 hours, they make constitution saves. Two members of the party fail and now have a level of exhuastion. At 11am they decide to extend their Rally to avoid the immediete level of exhuastion. That afternoon they reach the Grotto. They must end the Rally before they long rest, so they suffer 2 levels of exhuastion before beginning the long rest. The 24 Hour long rest removes 1 level of exhuastion. Two members of the party have 2 levels of exhuastion and the rest have one. They travel uneventfully back to the city over the next 4 days taking 8 hour short rests for the sleep. When they reach the city they long rest for 2 days to completely remove the exhuastion.
