Although casters, who are primarily ranged characters, don't suffer too much from fighting at a distance thanks to their spells, combat for ranged martial classes especially has ended up showing a few issues: #### Lacking Options Whereas melee characters tend to have a wealth of options from level 1 onwards, whether it's moving to flank, Athletics maneuvers, Feinting, or melee-centric class feats, ranged characters have far fewer baseline options. This leaves martial characters in particular feeling stuck with repetitive turns and a lack of varied means to contribute. #### Power In The Wrong Places A general perception of ranged martial characters is that they feel weak, especially at early levels when they only deal a single die of unmodified weapon damage. However, their extremely large range increments mean that in combat zones that let them take distance, they benefit from equally extreme amounts of safety, and so at little to no cost to their accuracy. This power not only limits how much can be allocated to ranged characters in other ways, but also makes ranged combat even more repetitious, as there is little incentive to move or use shorter-ranged actions when attacking from an unassailably faraway position. #### Repetition, Repetition, Repetition Whether it's Starlit Span magi and eldritch archers spending their turns using the exact same actions, or the gunslinger all too easily getting caught in a loop of shooting and reloading, ranged martial characters are at greater risk than any other type of character of repeating the same actions over and over, with little in the way of other evergreen actions that would let them contribute meaningfully at range and switch things up. #### A Weak Foundation For Starfinder Starfinder Second Edition is a game designed to use the same Second Edition rules for primarily ranged combat, and in doing so brings many old and new problems to the forefront: guns feel anemic and struggle against damage resistance, and characters are prone to samey rotations, but combat encounters are also extremely drawn-out and static as everyone entrenches themselves behind cover. Despite being the game's centerpiece, Starfinder Second Edition's combat in its current state may not be fit for purpose. \column ### A Way Forward Although it is difficult to systemically overhaul an entire aspect of gameplay, the following brew proposes targeted changes intended to expand and improve the health of ranged combat: #### Less Excessive Safety, More Options Key to this brew is an initial proposal to reduce the range increments of weapons: this wouldn't make a huge difference in most official encounters, which take place in fairly small spaces, but would guarantee that shooting from longer ranges would represent a real tradeoff between safety and accuracy. Importantly, though, this nerf would pave the way for significant buffs in the form of more options, including a measure of utility and better ways to deal with damage reduction. In effect, although most ranged characters would still be a Stride away from most monsters, their benefit over melee characters would shift more towards mobility and agency, rather than just safety. #### Dynamic, Positioning-Based Gameplay Several adjustments and additions emphasize movement and positioning: a new exposed condition lets characters exploit the high ground for a circumstance bonus to damage, limited ranged flanking encourages all characters to move and exploit each other's positioning, and changes to cover intend to both make it more straightforward to use and dangerous to stay entrenched in for too long. #### Firearm and Gunslinger Reworks Firearms, a normally undertuned group of weapons, are buffed in this brew to become more easily usable, with their uncommon rarity becoming their main restriction. The gunslinger, meanwhile, is reworked accordingly to no longer need to buff firearms to usability, and instead work with a greater range of firearms, while taking advantage of the mechanical hooks added in this brew for more varied gameplay. #### Assorted Ranged Build Adjustments In addition to the above, this brew proposes smaller-scale changes to several ranged-specific builds to align them better with these changes, as well as address certain outliers. \page # Rule Variants {{wide The following rule variants aim to introduce more dynamism and variety to range combat, trading off a measure of reliable safety in exchange for more options and greater incentives to reposition in ways appropriate for a ranged character. }} ## Reduced Range Increments In order to accommodate many of the other variants, which introduce more options that are liable to make ranged attackers more powerful, the following variant proposes to reduce all range increments and volley distances by half (minimum of 10 feet). In many instances, this would not meaningfully affect the accuracy of ranged weapons, as encounters in many official adventure paths take place in small areas. Outside of those circumstances, however, this change would guarantee that ranged weapons would generally not be able to benefit from large amounts of safety, power, and accuracy at the same time relative to melee weapons. ## Playing With Elevation Exploiting the high ground is an aspect of combat full of tactical and roleplaying potential. Perhaps you might want to reward a player whose character Leapt dramatically on top of a table to gain the upper hand in a tavern brawl, or perhaps you'd like to represent the disadvantage of attacking enemy archers while they loose arrows from atop elevated ramparts. The following variant proposes a context-dependent exposed condition, which rewards attacking from the high ground and puts attackers fighting from the low ground at a disadvantage. **Exposed**:: You have the low ground, causing gravity to take the force out of your attacks and add it to oncoming hits. The exposed condition always includes a value. You take a circumstance penalty equal to this value to the damage rolls of attacks against targets you're exposed to, and the range increments of your attacks against those targets are halved. Creatures you're exposed to gain a circumstance bonus equal to your exposed value to the damage rolls of attacks against you, and the range increments of their attacks against you are doubled. You're automatically exposed to creatures who have the high ground against you: the GM determines what counts as a sufficient difference in elevation to expose you; this is usually at least 5 feet for every 15 feet the creature is from you for you to be exposed 1, with each additional 5 feet per unit of distance increasing the condition's value by 1. ## Ranged Flanking Using this variant, a single melee combatant can expose an opponent to even ranged attacks with the flanked condition listed below. Effects that use or modify flanking, such as [Gang Up](https://2e.aonprd.com/Feats.aspx?ID=4943), work with the flanked condition in the same way: \column **Flanked**:: An enemy is threatening you up close, making it more difficult to defend yourself. You're off-guard to attacks whose source is directly opposite that enemy. You're automatically flanked by an enemy if they're able to act, wielding a melee weapon or able to make an unarmed attack, and you're within that weapon or unarmed attack's reach. {{note ##### Adjusting The Prone Condition Because flanking from range would make it easier for melee characters to render enemies off-guard to their ranged allies, you may want to consider changing the prone condition to render prone creatures off-guard to melee attacks only, rather than all attacks, while only granting standard cover against ranged attacks when Taking Cover while prone instead of greater cover. This would force ranged party members to position more often in order to make more accurate attacks, while also making the prone condition less detrimental against ranged opponents. Should you wish to further incentivize ranged characters to go prone for cover, you can allow Taking Cover while prone to remove the condition's circumstance penalty to attack rolls for your ranged attacks. }} ## Offensive Perception Actions Using this variant, characters can spend actions to increase their multiple attack penalty and make Perception checks to enhance their attacks. Although these actions are usable to all characters, they're especially liable to benefit ranged weapon-users, providing some added utility and a means of better dealing with Hardness and damage resistance. {{note ##### The Taxing Trait The following actions have the taxing trait, enhancing your next Strike while causing it to count as two attacks when calculating your multiple attack penalty. Should you apply the following, it is strongly recommended to also apply changes to the gunslinger class as detailed below to avoid overtuning it, as the class is otherwise currently balanced to compensate for having to use weaker weapons. }} ## Overwhelming and Precise Traits Should you wish to improve weapons with a reload value of 1 or more and that lack the capacity trait, give them either the overwhelming or precise trait listed below. It is recommended to give the overwhelming trait to reload weapons with the kickback or scatter trait, and the precise trait to the rest. The Aim and Critical Opening actions, as well as the taxing trait, are described above in the Rules Variants section under Offensive Perception Actions. **Overwhelming**:: This cumbersome weapon induces severe additional effects on a hit. So long as your next Strike with the weapon is unaffected by a taxing effect, you automatically use Critical Opening as a free action triggered when you target a creature with a Strike using the weapon. **Precise**:: This weapon is particularly well-suited for making aimed attacks, though its recoil often limits its ability to perform quick follow-ups. So long as your next Strike with the weapon is unaffected by a taxing effect, you automatically Aim as a free action triggered when you target a creature with a Strike using the weapon. ## Adjusted Traits The following adjusted traits aim to let several weapons fire more shots before needing to reload, while also streamlining the functionality of combination weapons and enabling a greater range of Strength-dependent builds. ### Capacity *Note: When using this version of the capacity trait, it's recommended to make the [slide pistol](https://2e.aonprd.com/Weapons.aspx?ID=524) a repeating weapon instead and remove its fatal trait.* : **Capacity**:: This weapon has multiple barrels or other mechanisms that allow it to fire several times before reloading. The capacity trait always includes a value. You can fire the weapon a number of times equal to this value before needing to reload. When you Interact to reload a capacity weapon, you reload all of its barrels or mechanisms, allowing you to fire it multiple times without reloading once more. ### Combination All combination weapons have a reload value of 0. Combination weapons automatically switch forms each time you Strike, though you can still switch forms with an Interact action. \column ### Kickback *Note: Existing kickback weapons have the kickback 1 trait, which you may modify at the GM's discretion up to kickback 3.* : **Kickback**:: This extra-powerful weapon incurs heavy recoil that is difficult to stabilize. The kickback trait always includes a value. Your ranged Strikes with this weapon deal additional damage equal to this value, but you also gain a circumstance penalty equal to this value to your ranged attack rolls with this weapon. You negate this penalty if your Strength modifier is equal to or greater than the kickback value. Attaching a kickback weapon to a deployed bipod, tripod, or other stabilizer can also lower or negate this penalty. ### Repeating *Note: Should you wish to improve the [long air repeater](https://2e.aonprd.com/Weapons.aspx?ID=194) and [repeating hand crossbow](https://2e.aonprd.com/Weapons.aspx?ID=449) further, give them the agile trait.* A repeating weapon is always assumed to have enough ammunition for a fight. While the weapon still uses ammunition and may have a reload value, loading a new magazine does not require any Interact actions and is performed while Striking with the weapon. ## Alternate Weapon Adjustments Should you want to adjust your reload weapons in different ways, you can instead apply one of the following adjustments to a weapon with a reload value of 1 or 2. Each adjustment lists examples of weapons that can be emulated with its changes: **Multi-Shot (Derringer, Multi-Barreled Rifle)**:: Give the weapon the capacity 3 trait. **Repeater (Machine Gun, Revolver)**:: Reduce the weapon's reload value by 1, its damage die size by one step, any fatal damage die size it has by one step, and give it the repeating trait. **Trick Weapon (Bowblade, Rifle Spear)**:: Give the weapon the combination trait. Choose a melee weapon of the same category as the weapon, that requires the same number of hands, and that has a damage die of 1d6 or higher. Your weapon's melee form is that of the melee weapon with its damage die size reduced by one step. If your weapon is a firearm, the melee weapon you choose must have a damage die of 1d8 or higher, its melee form's damage die size is reduced by two steps, and its melee form gains the critical fusion trait. **Volatile (Bazooka, Shotgun)**:: Give the weapon the scatter 5 ft. trait, or increase its scatter radius by 5 feet (maximum of 10 feet). Rather than offer deeds across levels, ways in this brew front-load all of their benefits at 1st level, giving the gunslinger a combination of unique benefits tailored towards a subset of weapons along with advance access to helpful class feats. Subsequent deeds instead become feats, with the aim of giving the class much more freedom to build however they like. Because many mechanics featured here rely on changes to ranged weapons and other mechanics outlined earlier in this brew, it is recommended to read those first to better understand some of the changes proposed here. }} ## Core Features This brew proposes the following changes to the gunslinger’s class features: * You're no longer trained in advanced crossbows and firearms, and are trained in simple and martial crossbows and firearms, rather than an expert.
