Some are stronger than others, just as some are rarer than others. Even if Yokai are, by definition, unique creatures, they tend to have similar characteristics when taking the shape of a particular vice. : ##### **Wrath** A common emotion, particularly in a land that routinely endures battles and wars of every kind. The Yokai associated to this sin are usually monstrous and exaggerated forms of the soul it corrupted. With a great penchant for physicality, these fiends often group themselves into raids of violence, carnage and abuse. : Wraths are the least powerful of all Yokai. Anger may be a strong emotion, but it's also fleeting. One isn't often furious for long periods of time. Besides, battle doesn't only evoke anger, but fear, focus and survival, as well. : ##### **Lust** Another very common feeling, chastised and frowned upon in the lands of Satokai. Like anger, lust is also momentary. It yearns for release, and dissipates as soon as it achieves satisfaction. The Yokai associated with this sin is generally an idealized version of the soul it corrupted. These creatures are devious and particularly cruel, but reckless and rapturous, which makes them easier to deal with than the more clever, insidious sins. : Lusts are rarer than Wraths and take a more indirect approach. Spellcasters in nature, Lusts are solitary, and often hide in plain sight by impersonating the soul they corrupted. }} {{note,position:relative,top:0px ##### Creature type: Yokai What even is a Yokai? Most would consider them fiends; demons and devils from Japanese mythology. But Yokai are also spirits, thought of as denizens of the other side, which would squarely put them in the "undead" department. Some Yokai are said to be creatures of the land, spirits of nature, like the famous kitsune or nine-tailed fox, which has been depicted as a protector and a trickster. Wouldn't that be a fey-like creature? : Yokai in D&D could mean anything from spirits to demons to aberrations, in certain fringe cases -- the horror, oh the horror. : For the purposes of this entry, Yokai is its own creature type, spirits of emotion that inhabit a mortal soul, ethereal creatures that take demi-physical forms. They are manifestations of a concept, living allegories. A half-way point between a fiend and an undead, with a little bit of fey thrown into the mix. : Some abilities, items, and spells in this entry affect *Yokai* in particular. Switch that to *Fiends*, if you want, and it'll make sense! Likewise, if an ability affects Fiends and/or Undead, llike a paladin's divine sense, it affects *Yokai*. }} {{imageMaskEdge5,--offset:7%,--rotation:270 ![](https://media.discordapp.net/attachments/1105488303710543923/1167158831021830166/tomfarlane_a_beautiful_demonic_man_in_the_style_of_japanese_fol_3dba9010-6183-46c7-ade3-a82c4f6cf555.png?ex=654d1c5e&is=653aa75e&hm=9f226206b6442aef4e86109c97f41e02109e308bdd887cc9ee516a7d2b57d5cf&=&width=3000&height=4000){height:100%,left:300px} }} {{pageNumber, auto}} {{footnote The Common Vices}} \page {{imageMaskCorner36,--offsetX:-40%,--offsetY:55%,--rotation:0 ![](https://media.discordapp.net/attachments/1105488303710543923/1167123179613991002/tomfarlane_a_japanese_medieval_town_on_fire_at_night_landscape__e448f9ee-c9b6-4dc2-97f0-40ee7d0da430.png?ex=654cfb2a&is=653a862a&hm=b62ed4a94798f5053b4d4cafd6469db00472f758494c62cffc3ce316eb3870fb&=&width=1368&height=912){height:65%,top:0px,right:-140px} }} ![Yokai of Sin](https://media.discordapp.net/attachments/1105918269992480819/1167149005998919801/removal.ai__b2986453-f2a9-416e-bb98-a0b3bf591a34-yokay-2-transformed.png?ex=654d1337&is=653a9e37&hm=4ac8e3ff1abe3829a041860581d5075e6e44b26c835fe75c8dd37eb567c3711f&=&width=3000&height=4000) {position:absolute,top:00px,right:-40px,width:500px} {{monster,frame,top:30px ## Wrath *Large Yokai, chaotic evil* ___ **Armor Class** :: 15 (natural armor) **Hit Points** :: 102 (12d10 + 36) **Speed** :: 30 ft., fly 30 ft. They particularly despise Lusts, as they represent the opposite emotion, and will go out of their way to murder them. : Left to their own devices, they end up killing each other. It brings people together, it breaks down walls and barriers, it builds a path to family and true, lasting happiness. : Then, it turns rotten. Work, duty, rest, and death. These Yokai are born out of an extreme sense of either great ambition, or profound exhaustion, when dealing with the affairs of life. In some cases, the providence that prepares for the future is also what feeds both the engine of greed--to always want more, and the inkling of sloth--to rest and relinquish responsibility. : ##### **Greed** Some say greed leads men to decadence and stagnation. That is not true. Greed is closely linked with ambition, and motivates even those that have it all. It does, however, perpetuate a system of great inequality. Greed is natural, in some sense; the feeling of "never enough" that made men strive for greatness. It also happens to be profoundly human, exacerbated by capital and the flow of money. : To want more. Is that such a terrible sin? Yokai of Greed don't think so. They are the most industrious, dependable, and diplomatic of their kind, provided there is something to be gained. These creatures are devious but fair, and even if they are very likely to double-cross and betray, they do so predictably. : A mortal cannot truly comprehend the meaning of greed, for its fortune, its capital, will eventually be taken from them, either by bad luck, malintent, or eventually, death. A Greed does not have this problem; as a Yokai, it can hoard forever, and does so with extreme caution. Greeds often hide their tremendous amount of stuff in demiplanes inside the Narak, accessible only by them... and those they wish to turn. ##### **Sloth** While Greed pushes forward, Sloth begs to be let go. Is wanting rest such a punishable offense? This insidious and eternal vice would argue the purpose of life is to end. Why work? Why do anything at all, when everything will end? To lay down and rot, to rest, eternally, free from the burdens of life. Doesn't that sound great? : Sloths are usually tranquil but profoundly homicidal creatures. The great suffering of life is not worth the trouble, and as such, the mere sin of existence is something to be corrected. And so they do. They share eternal rest with everyone they find--that is, they murder any and all unfortunate souls that cross their paths. : Sloths are profoundly tortured souls, perhaps having led a terrible life racked with guilt, suffering, and regret. Their melancholy doesn't even leave them in the afterlife; where greeds find eternal life to be a gift, sloths despise their continued existence, a reminder of life's spiteful truth. Impassive, they aimlessly roam, killing all that stand in their way. }} {{pageNumber, auto}} {{footnote Sins in Providence}} \page {{imageMaskCorner31,--offsetX:0%,--offsetY:-0%,--rotation:0 ![](https://media.discordapp.net/attachments/1105488303710543923/1167163884772282428/tomfarlane_a_field_of_golden_wheat_japanese_fields_eastern_land_7c75236b-d6a9-4f30-9ddb-351fff072fe9.png?ex=654d2112&is=653aac12&hm=01482ab574a652922c87f19ad072a0e3630090940106d902c912ae6737deab55&=&width=607&height=912){height:117%,top:-00px,right:-00px,transform:scalex(-1)} }} {{imageMaskCorner31,--offsetX:0%,--offsetY:-34%,--rotation:0 ![](https://media.discordapp.net/attachments/1105488303710543923/1167163884772282428/tomfarlane_a_field_of_golden_wheat_japanese_fields_eastern_land_7c75236b-d6a9-4f30-9ddb-351fff072fe9.png?ex=654d2112&is=653aac12&hm=01482ab574a652922c87f19ad072a0e3630090940106d902c912ae6737deab55&=&width=607&height=912){height:117%,top:-00px,right:-00px,transform:scalex(-1)} }} {{monster,frame,wide,top:390px ## Greed *Medium Yokai, neutral evil* ___ **Armor Class** :: 16 (natural armor) **Hit Points** :: 130 (20d8 + 40) **Speed** :: 30ft., fly 60 ft ___ | STR | DEX | CON | INT | WIS | CHA | |:-----:|:-----:|:-----:|:-----:|:-----:|:-----:| |14 (+2)|16 (+3)|14 (+2)|12 (+1)|18 (+4)|22 (+6)| ___ **Saving Throws** :: Cha +10 **Skills** :: Persuasion +14, Performance +10 **Damage Resistances** :: bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing from nonmagical attacks that aren’t silvered **Damage Immunities** :: necrotic, poison **Condition Immunities** :: charmed, exhaustion, grappled, paralyzed, petrified, poisoned, prone, restrained **Senses** :: darkvision 60 ft., passive Perception 14 **Languages** :: the languages it knew in life **Challenge** :: 11 (7,200 XP) ___ ***Magic Resistance.*** The Yokai has advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects. : ***Yokai Scent.*** Within a mile, the Yokai can follow the trace of a creature it has learned the scent of. The most insidious of all sins, Envy and Gluttony lead to a slower but infinitely deeper corruption. One would be forgiven for thinking them weaker; they are rarer, that is true, but the souls that morph into these Yokai become the most dangerous creatures to wander Satokai's shadow. : ##### Envy Envy is within the heart of all men. A feeling of inadequacy, fueled by a culture of constant competition and ruthless comparison to others. How would it not become one of the most powerful sins? To love, one must be able to feel jealousy. A sinking feeling of being left out, of being replaced. An unfair, frustrating, and lasting impression that lurks beneath every act, every word, every thought. : To be taken by Envy is to become a snake, slithering, biding your time, waiting for the perfect moment to act upon your accrued spite. And it never relents. The feeling never goes away. They do not mind being emperors of the ashes, if it means they are, in fact, emperors. : The corruption into an Envy is not an immediate affair. Unlike other metamorphoses, an Envy turns into a Yokai in all but appearence. This makes them the most insidious, as they are able to hide within the righteous until they are ready to pounce. ##### Gluttony It is strange that the most powerful of all vices is the one related to hunger. While all other sins, except Sloth, affect others, Gluttony seems to focus on oneself -- and in a way, to life itself. How can it birth such terrible creatures? : To be famished. To want desperately. To need. There are few things more terrible and exceptional than hunger. It's a feeling truer than any other, more needed than all. To think of Gluttony as excess in food alone is to underestimate its true reach, to ignore the deep meaning of craving. : To suffer the lack of something in a manner so deep, it feels like your very soul longs for it. That is true hunger. No greater pleasure than to scratch an itch. To satisfy a want. Why are Gluttonies are so powerful, you ask? Because they are the only ones that truly *need*. After a week elapses, they become a *Wendigo Thrall*. : The curse can be mitigated and slowed by protective spells such as *Remove Curse* and *Greater Restoration*, but will never relent until the Gluttony that caused it dies. : ***Cursed Stomach.*** Anything the Gluttony consumes ceases to exist when it reaches its deep stomach. All that is swallowed by it is destroyed after ten minutes pass, from magical items to the souls of those unfortunate enough to be devoured. : ***Scent of Blood.*** The Gluttony's attacks deal an extra 7 (2d6) damage of their main type if the target has less than half of their maximum hitpoints remaining. : ***Aggressive Undeath.*** If the Gluttony has hit a creature with an attack during the last round, it regenerates 10 hit points at the start of its turn. If it is below half its total hit points, it regenerates 15 hit points instead and becomes resistant to slashing, piercing and bludgeoning damage. }} {{pageNumber, auto}} {{footnote Sins of Longing}} \page {{position:relative,top:60px,right:10px ##### The Curse of Hunger Satokai is both a land of virtue and sin. As such, blessings are plentiful, and so are curses. Like the Corvid curse, the Feeding Frenzy is a terrible affliction from the other side of the veil. It finds its root, however, in the elusive Yokai of Gluttony, rarest and most powerful of all Yokai. : While other sins are very keen on creating more of themselves by tempting mortals, Gluttonies tend to not care. They have other priorities in mind. Their curse, however, runs rampant in Satokai. The only reason why it hasn't already destroyed the three kingdoms is the fact that an outbreak is very easy to control: just contain it... and let them devour each other. : A Wendigo Thrall can only be cured by killing the Gluttony that afflicted it. No other way is known. They are usually seen after a battle, feeding on corpses, fighting other animals for their carrion prize. If given enough food and magically manipulated, as Envies are prone to do, they can be fairly dutiful servants : A Wendigo Thrall that consumes enough sustenance in a short period of time can become a Yokai of Gluttony. With it, he can do as he pleases; he can create castles from rubble, turn water into lava, tear down a city. With this ability, he can cause the following spells to occur naturally: Meteor Swarm, Earthquake, Control Weather, Tsunami. Any save provoked by this ability has a DC of 20. : Most things this ability is able to do will take more than a single round to complete. A castle cannot be erected in six seconds!
