These souls are forced to aid the giant, granting the following benefits: * ***Whispered Warnings.*** The death giant has expertise in perception, and cannot be surprised. * ***Snuff Life.*** Creatures within the shroud have disadvantage on death saving throws. * ***Strength from Rot.*** Whenever the giant is subjected to necrotic damage, it takes no damage and regains a number of hit points equal to the necrotic damage dealt. * ***Soul Thief.*** If a ceature dies within the shroud of souls, The death giant can use its reaction to steal the soul and add it to the shroud. A creature cannot return to life by any means short of a wish spell while its soul is trappped in the shroud. All souls the giant has stolen are freed upon the giant's death. : ***Undead Reliance.*** The death giant, while not a undead, can still be affected by turn undead. If the giant fails the saving throw instead of turn undead's usual effects, it loses all benefits of it's "Shroud of Souls" feature, cannot use "lamentations of the damned", or cast or concentrate on any spells from its Variant Spellcasting. : ***Doomed.*** When a death giant dies, if it is not ressurected within one minute, its soul is irreversibly destroyed. : ***Innate Spellcasting.*** The giant's innate spellcasting ability is Charisma (spell save DC 16 +8 to hit with spell attacks). The giant can innately cast the following spells, requiring no material components: * 3/day each: Inflict wounds, dispel magic * 1/day each: blight ### Actions ***Multiattack.*** The death giant can use lamentations of the damned makes two greataxe attacks, or throws one rock. : ***Greataxe.*** *Melee Weapon Attack:* +10 to hit, reach 10ft., one target. *Hit* 23 (3d12 + 7) : ***Rock.*** *Ranged Weapon Attack:* +10 to hit, range 60/240ft., one target. *Hit* 28 (4d10 + 7) : ***Lamentations of the Damned.*** Each non-undead creature within 60 feet of the giant must succeed on a DC 16 Wisdom saving throw or be frightened for 1 minute. A frightened target can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success. If a target's saving throw is successful or the effect ends for it, the target is immune to the giant's Lamentations of the Damned for the next 24 hours. }} {{note ##### Variant: Spellcasting Death giants gain power as they steal souls. A death giant may have any of these modified spells at your discression, though they should generally be a notable individual. * At will: Comprehend languages, Unseen servant * 3/day each: speak with dead (trapped souls only), fog cloud (centred on self) * 1/day each: legend lore, spirit shroud, spirit guardians (necrotic only), summon undead spirit (ghostly only), Soul cage (as an action, souls in their shroud only, soul is freed when the spell ends). }} \column {{note ##### Variant: Suppressing the Shroud Since the shroud is essentially undead, other spells and features may interact with it, these are mostly just ideas i found fun. : *detect evil and good:* Detects the shroud as an undead creature : *forbiddance/hallow:* The shroud is supressed while the giant is within the spell's area. : *dispel evil and good (dismissal):* On a hit, the death giant permanently loses its shroud : *sunbeam/sunburst/holy aura:* While its shroud is active, the giant has disadvantage on its saves against these spells. When it fails its save against these spells the shroud is supressed for one minute : *Command Undead:* Upon failing its save, the death giant permanently loses it's shroud, and the necromancer gains it. The necromancer gains every benefit of the *shroud of souls* trait. }}
