Home to brave sentinels, adventurous traders, and rugged mercenaries. It also happens to be the brooding land of aberrant monstrosities with countless, acid-dripping appendages, and a favored practice ground for sorcerers delving into one of the darkest corners of magic: the powers of the unknowable void. : Whatever your reason may be for entering this peculiar region, settle your personal affairs before making the journey. It may very well be your last. : ### A land abandoned Once a prosperous land under the dominion of a merchant city-state called Selem, the Ichorous Peninsula is now a forsaken realm of broken men. A marshland forgotten by most, whose name is spoken in vile tones and disgusted grimaces. And indeed, the roaming murderous aberrations, the toxic soil, and the ichor-tainted waters do not paint a pretty picture. : Yet some kind of civilization still survives amid the inescapable darkness. But you know what they say about staring into the void -- the inhabitants that remain are a strange folk, to say the least. Only the bravest traders come to exchange wares here; some leave with a small fortune, while others don't leave at all. : ### Harspire and the Blackstone Ever since the aberrant darkness tainted the waters of this region, the Sentinel City of Harspire stands between all who would cross to and from the marshlands, letting few enter and almost none leave. This may seem like an excessive amount of caution, perhaps even unwarranted. One look at the things that prowl beneath the mud, and you'll understand why it is very much warranted. : The watchful eye of sentinels and warriors gazes all across the Blackstone, as the twenty hundred mile long wall that separates the mainland from the horrors beyond is known. It is manned by siege experts, monster hunters and fearless war veterans, all equipped with incendiary tar. No aberration has ever crossed the Blackstone and lived long enough to reproduce on the other side. : {{position:relative,top:790px,right:353px ### The brooding darkness The aberrant beings that prowl the nights of Selem's Marsh are known only as Deep Ones, for they are too dissimilar among themselves to give them a more specific name. They are killers of the depths, and that is as much as any sane man would want to know. The old fauna and flora that once claimed dominion over the land either adapted or died. Poor of those that adapted, miserable, corrupted shadows of the vibrant wildlife they once were. : ### Ill-omened profundities The monstrosities rise from the ichor-tainted depths of the marsh, a cold and terrible place where dark energies dance and strain, birthing a new horror to stalk the surface with every passing moment. The few adventurers crazy enough to delve deep into those eldritch profundities have never come back. : Truth be told, sometimes they do come back, but never as they were before. They return to the surface as corrupted husks of their former selves, meandering the swamps mournfully, issuing their broken wails to the heedless night. Don't take pity. They'll drown you to make sure you suffer the same fate, if given the chance. \column ![Lotus](https://media.discordapp.net/attachments/1105918269992480819/1108541045953802280/lotusfinal.png?width=1002&height=1002) {width:960px,position:relative,top:-550px,left:-66px,transform:rotate(-135deg)} {{descriptive,position:relative,left:-330px,top:335px ##### From "Coinseeker's Planar Guide", Entry 206 Some say we are all the product of our environment. Personally, I never bought into that deterministic nonsense. After visiting the Selem's Marsh, I may have to revise my ideas: the locals are indeed as strange and unwelcoming as their land. They speak the common tongue with gurgling inflections, as if drowning in their own words. They clutch their harpoons like mothers holding their babes. They are utterly indifferent towards valuable goods like gems, incense, or spices. : They only want glass, specifically magnifying glass: lenses, spectacles, even the broken bottoms of liquor bottles. They use them to better look upon the murky waters of their homeland. Their favorite by far are the fine telescopes of the capital, the ones wrought in dazzling bronze and fine crystal. They point them to the lakes, as if the stars were there and not in the skies above. To be fair, the all-shrouding mists of the peninsula would make regular astronomy rather difficult. : By bartering with the few magnifying glasses I had on me by pure chance, I managed to acquire a sizeable cargo of Lotus Sap, as requested by Threadmaster Guilliam Fallow. But no matter how tempting his purse, I am not coming back. Not after seeing those... wretched things beyond the walls. They brought one into the city, ghastly little thing, covered in black tar and greenish grime. A wraith from your worst nightmares, the unholy merging of a fish and a toddler. After hunting, their bodies are distilled into grease oil, to keep torches lit and firepits at the ready, should a horde attack. This region deserves every last piece of its reputation. : **--Runo Fylsworth, Threadmaster of Finance** }} {{imageMaskCorner26,--offsetX:-55%,--offsetY:-40%,--rotation:0 ![](https://media.discordapp.net/attachments/1105488303710543923/1108218028526678097/tomfarlane_an_eldritch_monstrosity_emerging_from_the_waters_of__6b8a70da-930d-499b-baeb-02d1397d5455.png?width=667&height=1002){height:70%,position:relative,top:360px,left:-50px} }} {{watercolor8,top:-210px,left:310px,width:600px,background-color:#D7BFDC,opacity:80%,}} {{artist,top:270px,right:210px ##### The Loveliest Petals Lotus sap is often sought for its wondrous cleansing properties. I’ll keep this brief. Here's what I could smuggle out of the City of Strings before Fallow found me out. Enjoy what little knowledge I can provide you… Oh, love, if it were up to me, I’d give it away for free. All of it. But! At the end of the century, bills must be paid, or so Runo says. Please enjoy this hand-picked sample from my Codex of Strings! I hope it sates your ravenous curiosity. : If it doesn’t… well, in that case, I’d love to meet you. Come by our City sometime, dear, I’ll get Runo to make you a discount. Never stop your search for knowledge! That’s how you know you are on the correct path. :: #### Feat: Critical Magic *"Ashes to ashes, dust to dust. In the struggle against the eldritch, we may employ some arcanisms of our own."* : You have honed your magical prowess to heighten the destructive potential of your spells. : • Whenever a creature rolls a natural 1 on a saving throw caused by one of your damaging spells, they suffer the damage twice. Additionally, your spell attacks are considered critical hits on a natural roll of 19 or 20. :: #### Spell: Dark Tides *2nd-level Evocation* **Casting Time:** :: 1 action **Range:** :: Self (30 ft. cone) **Components:** :: S, M (a vial of murky water) **Duration:** :: Instantaneous A powerful wave of dark water sprouts from your palm, drenching all creatures within range with a powerful shock of frost. Each creature in a 30-foot cone must make a Dexterity save. A creature takes 3d6 cold damage on a failed save, or half as much on a successful one. Additionally, creatures that fail the saving throw become vulnerable to cold damage for 1d4 rounds. :: {{descriptive,position:relative,top:10px ##### From "Into the Storm", Chapter One *To be a hunter is to embrace the unknown, to challenge the unimaginable, and to triumph against all odds -- at any cost. This robe takes the "know your enemy" part of that old wisdom to a whole other level: you will be fighting them in their own skin. This type of arcane robe can be made from the skin of monstrosities, aberrations, undead or dragons. : Bearing a Dreadskin Robe is more than just donning a magical piece of armor. So long as you're attuned to it, you are considered a creature of the robe's type for the purposes of spells and magical effects. For example, a paladin's divine sense would detect you as an undead if you're wearing a Dreadskin Robe made with undead remnants. This is also true for damaging abilities and features, such as the *Turn Undead* cleric ability or a ranger's *Favored Enemy* bonuses. : While attuned to a Dreadskin Robe, you always have the benefits of the mage armor spell. Additionally, creatures of the type from which your robe is made have disadvantage to save against your spells, and take half your level (rounded down) in psychic damage every time they hit you with an attack. : }} ![Dreadskin Robe](https://media.discordapp.net/attachments/1105918269992480819/1112869409506205757/Armor_of_Hexes-transformed_1.png?width=1236&height=2572) {position:absolute,top:0px,right:85px,width:290px,mix-blend-mode:darken} {{artist,top:10px,right:17px ##### Elegance When one of our scouts came back wearing this fabulous dress, I immediately promoted them. They set out onto the marshes before the sun winds down completely, hoping to catch stragglers from Harspire before they retreat into their walled city. The semi-ethereal form of these aberrations allows them to survive in dim sunlight, a feat other deep ones of comparable size are incapable of. : Though not especially strong or large, Caustic Phantoms are fairly fast, and intelligent enough to identify and strike at weak points. They do so quickly, disappearing into the ethereal plane if their prey survives. A single specimen is enough to inflict heavy losses onto an unprepared party. Why do they do this? Just to cause desperation and terror, some argue, but recent findings show that they capture the souls of the slain within their mysterious ethereal veil. They then take them back to the depths, where Deep Ones capable of wielding aberrant magic shape them into all kinds of monstrosities to be used further into the night. : Interestingly enough, their ethereal veils can be removed and used by other creatures. Doing so is heavily discouraged, though, unless you are able to resist its extremely acidic nature. {{watercolor2,top:200px,left:-170px,transform:scaleX(-1),width:500px,background-color:#BBAD82,opacity:40%,background-color:mediumaquamarine}} {{watercolor1,top:-160px,left:340px,transform:scaleX(-1),width:600px,background-color:#BBAD82,opacity:50%,background-color:mediumaquamarine}} ![Scout](https://i.imgur.com/3Ae8iCe.png) {position:relative,top:0px,left:-100px,width:460px,mix-blend-mode:multiply} {{monster,frame,top:-40px ## Caustic Phantom *Medium aberration (scout), chaotic evil* ___ **Armor Class** :: 14 (natural armor) **Hit Points** :: 44(8d8+8) **Speed** :: 45ft. ___ | STR | DEX | CON | INT | WIS | CHA | |:-----:|:-----:|:-----:|:-----:|:-----:|:-----:| |10 (-)|18 (+4)|13 (+1)|14 (+2)|12 (+1)|5 (-3)| ___ **Saving Throws** :: Dex + 6, Int + 4 **Damage Immunities** :: acid **Senses** :: Darkvision 120 ft., passive Perception 11 **Languages** :: Understands Deep Speech but can't speak **Challenge** :: 4 (1100 XP) **Skills** :: Stealth + 8 ___ ***Acidic Etherealness.*** The Caustic Phantom can move through other creatures as if they were difficult terrain. The target can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success. : ***Engulf (recharge 6).*** The Caustic Phantom throws itself onto a large or smaller creature within 5ft. The target must make a DC 15 Dexterity saving throw or become painfully melded with the Caustic Phantom. While melded, the creature takes 21 (4d6+7) acid damage at the start of each of its turns. : Targets can use their action on subsequent turns to try and break the meld by succeeding on a DC 15 Strength (athletics) check. Other creatures can also spend their action to attempt to break the hold, but take 7 (2d6) acid damage each time they try. : The Caustic Phantom must spend its action on each of its turn to maintain the engulf. While melded, it gains resistance to all damage and any attack against it is made at disadvatnage. ### Reactions ***Ethereal Shroud.*** As a reaction, when hit by a weapon attack, the Caustic Phantom can ward itself from harm by momentarily shifting into the ethereal plane.
