# Robes of Red (Shadow)
:
*Wondrous item, legendary (requires attunement by a spellcaster)*
:
This stoppered bottle contains a viscous crimson fluid within. The contents move and churn as if alive, and seem to be particularly drawn towards the presence of spellcasters. When a spellcaster attunes to this item, the fluid will crawl and spread itself across the individual's body, forming fibres that weave into a set of illustrious red robes.
While you are attuned to this item, any damage dealt by a spell you cast of 1st level or higher is maximized.
~~Cursed.~~ The Robes of Red is cursed, and attuning to it extends this curse to you. As long as you are cursed, you cannot remove the robes or break your attunement to it, and whenever you cast a spell of 1st level or higher, you must expend an additional spell slot. The additional spell slot can be of any level. If you only have one spell slot left, you cannot cast any spells other than cantrips.
~~Sentience.~~ The crimson fluid is actually a sentient fragment of Star Spawn named Shadow, with an intelligence of 16, a wisdom of 12, and a charisma of 18.
Shadow perceives everything its wearer perceives. Once this item has dealt 100 HP worth of damage, Shadow will make its existence known to its wearer, advising them to become ever more violent and destructive. Once this item has dealt 500 HP worth of damage, Shadow becomes able to withold the wearer's spellcasting ability whenever they displease the entity.
If the wearer becomes the target of a *remove curse* spell, the crimson fluid that makes up the robes is stripped away, and reforms into a monstrous fascimile of its previous user, intent on payback for their betrayal.
For every additional spell slot expended by this item's curse, Shadow gains them as spell points in its corporeal form. It knows all spells its former user knows.

##### Excerpt from Little Edith's Diary
_The searing comet fell by the crops last night. It left a scorched black tail behind it among the rice and wheat. Grandmother took brother to examine it by lantern-light after we heard the fall. She says the paddies were still gurgling with steam when they arrived._
_The blasted rock had cracked open and under its crust was the most beautiful, scintillating steel we've ever seen, the size of a new-born calf! We'll have it appraised in the coming week. I am so grateful the gracious gods have sent our family a gift to ride out the hard tithes. Perhaps father will soon return from conscription, and we can all celebrate together!_
_Brother says he caught some writhing thing that dripped out from under the rock, and trapped it in a jar. He won't let me see it, but says he'll bring it to the alchemist in the morrow and fetch a good price for it._
