Monastic Tradition - Way of the Hero

Many monks dedicate themselves to internal peace, discipline, and focus. Those who follow the way of the hero believe that mastery of the self is only worthy if it's in service of others. They embody a heroic spirit of selflessness that pushes them to defend the weak, strike against oppressors, and inspire others. So potent is this spirit that they can physically project it, shining bright with the light of their heart. Their ability to fight off the worst debilitations and overcome the most grievous injuries strikes fear into the hearts of evildoers, who know that no matter what they throw at them, the Hero will keep on coming.

Heroic Presence

When you take this subclass at 3rd level you gain the ability to project your heroic presence as a bonus action a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, refreshing on a long rest. This lasts for 1 minute, but ends early if you are unconscious. You may choose to end it early with a bonus action. While you have no uses available, you can spend 1 ki point to use this feature again.

While your Heroic Presence is active you gain the following benefits:

  • You have advantage on strength and dexterity ability checks.
  • You shed bright light out in a 10 foot radius, and dim light a further 10ft beyond that.
  • Your martial arts die is treated as one die size higher.
  • Your base movement speed is increased by 10ft.
  • When you fail a saving throw while your Heroic Presence is active, you may choose to add your Martial Arts die to the roll. If you still fail the saving throw, your Heroic Presence ends immediately.

A Hero's Reputation

From 3rd level in this class, people instinctively learn to recognise you as friend or foe, seeing the 'good' in you. You have advantage on intimidation checks against creatures who side with evil, and advantage on persuasion checks with those aligned with righteousness and good.

Boundless Reserves

You can keep fighting even after others would fall. From 6th level when you are reduced to 0 hit points you may choose to expend up to half your hit dice. You add your wisdom modifier to each dice roll, and regain hit points equal to the total without being knocked unconscious. In addition, you gain a number of ki points equal to the number of hit dice you expended (up to your maximum number of ki).

You must complete a long rest before you can use this feature again.

Thunderclap

From 6th level you learn how to focus all of your motion into a single faster-than-light dash. You may choose to expend all of your movement to teleport to adjacent to a creature, so long as they are within a radius equal to half your total movement. You then receive advantage on the next attack against that creature you make this turn.

Strength through Wisdom

You grasp inner strength from truths that few understand as well as you. From 11th level, your strength score is increased to match your wisdom score. Whenever you gain additional permanent wisdom (for example through your ability score improvements or magic items), your strength increases to match this.

Focused Heroic Presence

You've gained a greater control over your heroic presence than before. From 11th level it no longer ends when you fail a saving throw that you added with your martial arts die to. In addition, while in heroic trance your unarmed strikes deal double damage to objects, and once per turn you when you hit a creature you may choose to knock them back 10ft.

Mastered Heroic Presence

From 17th level you no longer have any usage or time limitations on Heroic Presence and may activate it at will. It is still dismissed if you are rendered unconscious. In addition, you gain the following additional benefits while in your Heroic Presence.

  • If a creature teleports while you are adjacent to them, you may use your reaction to follow them, appearing adjacent to them at their destination regardless of how far they travelled, including to other planes.
  • If you make an opportunity attack with your Reaction and hit, you gain another Reaction until the start of your next turn. This can repeat.
  • You may make opportunity attacks against creatures who take the Disengage action or have similar features.
