Fairies

Fair folk of the forest appear in tales and legends across the multiverse, but few realize how true these stories are. Fairies may be native to the feywild, but they often flutter unseen through the dense forest canopies and undergrowths of the prime material. Rarely seen, they are often encountered through the playful "pranks" they scatter around to tease the taller races. There are few things the shy tricksters enjoy more than a good-natured laugh or, failing that, a few well-deserved curses. When not making the lives of mortals more interesting, they have natural duties to attend to like scattering dew drops or making flowers bloom, given to them by one or both of the fairy queens. No matter how important these tasks may be however, fairies will always find a little extra time for mischief and fun.

The Wee Free Folk

The world is a strange and wonderful place from a fairy's perspective, where every hill and tree is a new adventure to explore. Not to mention that it seems much, much bigger. Fairies range between 4 to 6 inches tall, with slender willowy builds, tiny angular features, and long pointed elf ears, giving them the same delicate grace of the elves on a smaller scale.

Fairy skin and hair comes in the full spectrum of colors, often pastels, and usually reflective of what task they perform when tending to their little piece of nature. Fairies of autumn may have wild flame-colored hair sticking out at odd angles across their nut-brown skin. Frost fairies may have a delicate powder-blue complexion to match their snow-white curls. Dew drop fairies may have very little color at all in their translucent skin and wispy cotton-wool hairstyles.

However, the true pride of any fairy is not their hair or complexion. It's the pair of shimmering insect wings on their back. These wings come in all shapes, sizes and textures ranging from simple to elaborate. A fairy's wings reflect their personality as much as their job. A no-nonsense warrior will likely have a simple set of transparent dragonfly wings, while a fey actress will likely have an impractical tangle of curly-ques, jagged edges, and bright clashing colors

Secrets Worlds, Hidden Magic

Most Pixies and Sprites live far away from the civilized world in hidden groves, secret valleys, and forbidden forests. As such, they rarely encounter the taller races and often have a curiosity bordering on fascination with them. Not that they would ever say so; their curiosity is always tempered by a measure of shyness and caution. When you're only a few inches high, not being seen is the best defense you have.

Often residing in hollow trees, thorn bushes, or even friendly treants, even the mildest of fairies will employ powerful magic to protect their home. Colony life best suits most of these fey, with many fairies rarely fluttering more than a mile away from the log they were born in. Still, others are called to a more solitary life; wandering in the breeze, never making a home more permenent than a simple bed of moss.

Chaos is the norm for all denizens of the feywild, and as such not much can be said about what all fairies do or how all fairies live. Some brave sprite clans have even taken to urban life, existing just under the noses of humans, elves and halflings. They do not live by the grace of nature, but rather by "borrowing" common household objects and repurposing them for the needs of smaller bodies. If a humanoid finds themselves sharing space with such beings, generosity can lead to magically simple chores and years of good fortune. Contrariwise, giving offense can lead to enough tricks, traps, and bad luck to give even the most stubborn miser a good reason to move.

Fairy Names

Fairies are given over to similar fanciful naming conventions as their gnomish cousins. Direct imports from the feywild are likely to have a proper sylvan name (to be used only with close family and superiors) and many more silly nicknames for use with the mortal races.

Fairy Traits

Your character's sylvan origins may express themselves in a variety of ways, but these are common to all fairies

Ability Score Increase. Your Charisma score increases by 2.

Age. Fairies reach maturity at the age of sixteen and can easily live to see 900, barring injury or disease.

Alignment. Pixies and sprites are almost invariably chaotic, owing to their deep connection with the feywild. Their connectedness with nature and all living things pushes them toward goodness, but fairies are capricious creatures with moods that can swing wildly. Mean-spirits and cruelty are just as common in a fairy's heart as kindness or joy.

Size. Fairies are between 4 and 6 inches tall and average less than a few pounds in weight. Your size is Tiny.

Speed. Your base walking speed is 10 feet.

Delicate and Dainty. To reflect your petite form and sensitive nature, any hit dice you gain from taking class levels are one die smaller than they would normally be. For example, 3d8 hit die from three levels of warlock become 3d6 hit die for you. They function otherwise as normal hit die.

Sylvan Wings. You come equiped with a pair of insect wings in the style and color of your choosing. You have a flying speed of 25 feet and may hover in place. To use this speed, you can’t be wearing medium or heavy armor.

Fey Ancestry. You have advantage on saving throws against being charmed, and magic can’t put you to sleep.

Seers. You have proficency in the Nature and Stealth skills

Languages. You can speak, read, and write Common and Sylvan. Sylvan is the hissing, breathy speech of primal nature and its pictographic script is written in spirals.

Subraces There are (broadly speaking) two types of fairies in the Prime Material: the playful pixie and the shy sprite. Choose one of these subraces.

Pixie

As a pixie, you are the more out going of the two kinds of fairy. Playful, mischievious and generally good natured your beauty and skill with magic will win you many admirers. Beware, however, of those who would use you for your impressive wings and precious stores of pixie dust. Or perhaps they should beware your tricksy hexes and traps.

Ability Score Increase. Your Wisdom score increases by 1

Ethereal Glow. You glow faintly in the color of your choice, sheding bright light in a 5 foot radius and dim light out another 10.

Forest Healer. You have proficency with the Herbalism Kit

Pixie Dust. You know the druidcraft cantrip. When you reach 3rd level you can cast the feather fall spell once per day as a 1st level spell. Once you reach 5th level, you can also cast the levitate spell once per day. Charisma is your spellcasting ability for these spells.

Tiny Player Characters

There are many special concerns to deal with when creating a character as small as a fairy. Work closely with you DM to figure out how common Tiny adventures are in the world, how they operate in society, and for common sense rulings on whether an action is possible given your size.

Here are some guidelines as well as things to remember about the Tiny size class:

  • Tiny creatures can carry half as much weight as small creatures with the same Strength score
  • Tiny creatures have disadvantage on Strength ability checks and Stength saving throws
  • Equipment made for small or larger humanoids is unusable to tiny humanoids for its intended purpose. Tailor made equipment will weigh about 1/4 of the listed weight.
  • Weapons with the Heavy property rely on excessive mass to deal damage, and so are unusable by tiny creatures
  • Tiny creatures can Hide and take cover behind objects larger creatures would only find incidental like saplings, stones and other players
  • Tiny creatures may occupy the same space as a medium or larger creature

Sprite

As a sprite, you are shy and reserved, catious of any being taller than 7 inches. This suspecion often manifests through a brave fighting spirit; you know hiding is not cowardice, but strategy. Finer and less ostentatious than your pixie bretherin, sometimes its seems as though you could fade right out of existence and no one would be the wiser.

Ability Score Increase. Your Dexterity score increses by 1

Darkvision. Accustomed to staying in the shadows, you have superior vision in dark and dim conditions. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.

Heartsensor. You can cast the detect evil and good spell once per day as a 1st level spell. Charisma is your spellcasting ability for this spell.

Unseen Borrrower. When you reach 3rd level you can cast invisibility on yourself once per day as a 2nd level spell.

Elfshot. You gain proficiency in (tiny sized) shortbows, longbows, blowguns and darts.
