Magic Items in Season 8

Of all the changes in season 8, the one that stands out the most would be the changes to the Magic Items. A change from actually giving out a magic item to unlocking it is rather drastic, and in my mind, it was not effectively implemented. The overall change will probably be effective, but in the meanwhile it's relatively unclear which items are available and which ones are not, and if they are, how much they're worth. In addition, since one needs to know of what rarity each item is in order to trade I have listed rarities as well.

Story Items

These items are considered too powerful to be transferred from table to table and as a result can never be unlocked. Instead they exist only as the group plays the adventure. This is because in some adventures, the items that are given out are given to artificially increase the PC's power level far beyond what it would normally be, and they are required to defeat the "big bad." Thus, when the group would receive a story item, instead everyone who played in the session receives a story award version of the item and as long as one person with the story award is playing in that specific hardcover/module, the entire group has access to it. However, there can only be one of said item at a time, so even if multiple people have the story award for the Sunsword at a given table there will only be one Sunsword that they can use.

Banned Items

Meanwhile, unlike story items, some items are just considered too powerful to even be posessed by heroes for the duration of the adventure. Alternatively, they are banned so that players do not try and actively disrupt the campaign in order to seek out said items.

Now you can actually purcahse better potions instead of having 1000's of normal healing potions and nothing else to spend gold on.
