Minor Elemental spirits

There are many different kinds of elemental creatures that live throughout the planes from djini to efreeti. One especially unique and interesting among them is the minor elemental spirit. What sets them apart from other residents of the elemental planes is that they arent trully alive, instead they are fragments of elemental power of creation left wild that have slowly gained sentience through the influence of sapient beings on the material plane personifying the elements around them.

Interestingly the millennia they spent out of the material plane made them anchored, meaning that part of them always remains in their plane of origin, and that they have a limited ability to interact with objects in the material plane. They are vastly varied in their appearances, characteristics, and levels of intelligence, they can be found throughout the world phasing in and out around large concentrations of the element or concept they represent (like wind, frost and death). They appear as small translucent humanoids about a hand span in size.

Spirit bond

the spren have limited sentience when phasing into other planes and they act like the element or concept they are personifying with little variation. However,they have the ability to bond to creatures from the material plane. By doing that they gain the ability to remain in the material plane as long as the bond is in place and they also gain sentience and personality that can adapts depending the person they are bonded to.

The particulars for initiating the pact differ for each kind but in general after finding a minor lemental and convincing them to make a pact, the spirits test or require a task of some sort from the person initiating the pact.

The longer the creatures are bonded, their link becomes stronger and the more intelligent the fey becomes. whenever you level up the bond level increases up to level 7.

Bond spellcasting

After completing the test and the bond is formed you gain a stat increase depending on the type . Additionally you gain a cantrip of the domain of the minor elemental spirit you bond with, and gain access to higher level spells of that element as the bond strengthens. The link with the fey however takes one slot of attunement.

These spells use Charisma + half of your bond level, rounded down, as a modifier (seen in the tables below) and use the spirit as both the spellcasting focus and any material components the spell may require, however that means that you cannot have two spells that you gain from the bond active at the same time.

unlike most caster classes bond spellcasting does not have spellslots , instead you have a pool of points , equal to your bond level and when casting a spell you subtract points from that pool equal to the spell's level. You cannot cast the spells on higher levels. you regain half of your total points during a short rest , rounded up, and all of them during a long rest.

Bond weapon

Upon reaching the forth level in your bond the spren gains the ability to transform into a weapon fitting to it's personality and abilities (chosen by the DM). that weapon counts as a magical +1 weapon that deals damage of the type that weapon normally would. At seventh level that weapon becomes a +2

for the DM

I have found that the spren companion is very helpful for pulling out different aspects of a player's personality , as well as relaying information to my group without directing them since spren are supposed to be alien of mind, and as such they have a very different understanding of the world and morality in general.

I would advise talking with your players about what they want out of it and changing whatever would fit more, like giving the final for of the weapons extra effects or elemental damage or switching any of the spells below.

you instantaneously create a metal barrage in a 7X7 feet cube, the appearance and shape are predetermined and based on the fey but details can be altered between uses . after the time ends the structure begins to rust and starts to quickly deteriorate .
