Combat Digestion Rules v1

These rules are for use with the 'Devouring & Digesting' Rules for D&D 5th Edition. The following is intended to make it faster to devour something, make it easier to escape a predator, make escape exhaustion not kill a predator outright, and give players a reason to continue playing after being eaten. Special thanks to Allweek for coming up with the idea and vore exhaustion levels. See the aforementioned 'Devouring and Digesting' rules here. -Lucius

Variant Rule: Devour Contests

When you want to swallow a creature, you can use your attack action to make a special attack: Devour. You must be grappling a creature to target them with this attack. If an ally willingly allows you to start a devour contest on a creature they are grappling, you can bypass the need to be grappling that creature.

You must make a Strength(Athletics) check contested by the target's Strength(Athletics) or Dexterity(Acrobatics) check (the target chooses the ability to use). If you succeed, you and the target enter a Devour Contest and you are awarded a single success toward ingesting the target. The devour action can take the place of the grapple action, allowing you to use one of your attacks during a multiattack to make a grapple or take the devour action but not both per attack action.

During a Devour Contest, both you and the target become a special kind of restrained as you attempt to overcome the prey. While in a devour contest, the predator may move up to half their speed, dragging their prey with them. Both predator and prey have disadvantage on all attack rolls, but attacks against them do not grant advantage. All other effects of the restrained condition are unchanged.

Variant Rule: Combat Digestion

As a defense mechanism, a predator's digestive system ramps up to incredible power during combat. Every round at the end of the predator's turn, the predator inflicts acid damage on all of its occupants. Once a creature is reduced to 0 HP by this damage, they are incapacitated and fail a single death saving throw on that turn and for each following turn. Creatures killed this way during combat count against a predator's capacity until combat is over, but are considered to have finished digesting.

Stomach Damage = The Predator's Level /CR (Rounded up) x2 + Predator's Constitution Modifier. Minimum of 2 damage.

On the prey's turn, they can only make the Struggle action. They make a Strength Saving Throw against the predator's Stomach DC.

Stomach DC = 8 + Predator's proficiency bonus + Predator's Constitution modifier

On a success, the predator takes a level of Vore Exhaustion. All Vore Exhaustion levels gained this way disappear when a predator's stomach is emptied, either by finishing digestion or by releasing all occupants.

Alternatively, a creature that has been devoured may be able to influence the actions of their predator. Instead of taking the struggle action, a creature may elect to take one of the following actions:

Hold Still - A creature that is struggling quickly coats themselves in digestive enzymes. By Holding Still, a creature gains resistance to acid damage for one round.

Throw - A creature may elect to suddenly shift as their predator makes an attack. Roll a d20. On a 11 or higher, the predator has disadvantage on their next attack this round.

Variant Rule: Quick Devour

During a devour contest, both the predator and prey are locked in a battle for survival. There is no room for hesitation. Each time a Devour or Escape action is made, it awards successes to either predator or prey depending on if the attempt was a success or a failure. For example, if, during the prey's turn, they attempted the escape action and failed, the predator would be awarded one success. If a creature in a devour contest does not take either the devour or escape action on their turn, it automatically counts as a success for the other creature. All devour/escape actions during a devour contest can only be made as bonus actions. A predator cannot use a bonus action devour on the same turn that they successfully started a devour contest.

Variant Rule: Vore Exhaustion

For every success a devoured prey makes against the Stomach DC, the predator takes a level of Vore Exhaustion. The effects are listed below.

Level of Vore Exhaustion Effect
1 Predator cannot disengage, dodge, or dash
2 Prey has Advantage on escape attempts
3 Predator uses their action on their next turn to regurgitate all of their prey.

If a prey is regurgitated this way, both predator and prey are Dazed for 1 round. Dazed Creatures have disadvantage on all attack rolls, saving throws and skill checks. When a predator is killed or incapacitated, a prey may use their action to free themselves from the predator's stomach. If a prey does not leave an incapacitated or dead predator's body, the predator continues to deal acid damage to the prey at the end of the predator's turn every round. Creatures immune to exhaustion are resistant to vore exhaustion, requiring two successful saves against the predator's stomach DC to inflict one level of vore exhaustion.

Modified Vore Spells

2nd-level Transmutation

  • Casting Time: 1 action
  • Range: Self
  • Components: V, S, M (A vial of alchemical compounds worth 1gp, which the spell consumes)
  • Duration: 8 rounds

Your gastric acids magically intensify, quickly melting any devoured creatures to sludge.

For the duration of the spell, your Stomach Damage deals an additional 2d6 acid damage.

At Higher Levels: When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 3rd level or higher, the damage increases by 1d6 for each slot level above 2nd.

Digestive Barrier

2nd-level Abjuration

  • Range: 60 feet
  • Components: V, S, M (a small strip of cloth)
  • Duration: Concentration, up to 4 rounds

A backup plan is always helpful. Choose a creature within range that is being swallowed. For the duration of this spell, the target is immune to Stomach Damage.

At Higher Levels: When you cast this spell with a spell slot of 3rd level or higher, the duration increases by 2 rounds for every slot level above 2nd.

Greater Belch

3rd-level Evocation

  • Casting Time: 1 action
  • Range: 30 Foot Cone
  • Components: V
  • Duration: Instantaneous

You release a prodigious belch, echoing with enough force to lay waste to your enemies. Creatures inside the cone must make a Constitution saving throw or take 6d8 points of thunder damage. On a success, they take half as much damage.

Heave

2nd-level Enchantment

  • Casting Time: 1 action
  • Range: 60 feet
  • Components: V,S,M (An ort of moldy food)
  • Duration: Concentration, up to 1 minute

Your magic sickens a creature. When you cast this spell against a creature, the creature must make a Wisdom saving throw. On a failure, they become poisoned for the duration and automatically fails any attempt to initiate or continue a devour contest as the predator. If the target has prey in its stomach at the beginning of its turn, it immediately uses its action to regurgitate one random creature. At the end of each of its turns, the target can make another Wisdom saving throw. On a success, the spell ends on the target.

Inhale

5th-level Evocation

  • Casting Time: 1 action
  • Range: 20 Foot Cone
  • Components: V
  • Duration: Concentration, up to 1 minute

Your mouth widens and a gale-force wind draws in nearby prey. Until the spell ends, you can use your action to inhale a vortex of air. When a creature enters the spell's area for the first time on a turn or starts its turn there, they must make a Strength Saving Throw or be pulled up to 20 feet towards you, taking 4d8 bludgeoning damage on a failed save or half as much on a passed one and are not pulled. If a creature is pulled within 5 feet of you, you may immediately perform an athletics check contested by that creature's athletics or acrobatics. If a creature fails the contest, they are immediately devoured.

As a bonus action, you may redirect the cone in a direction you choose.

At Higher Levels: When you cast this spell with a spell slot of 6th level or higher, the damage increases by 1d8 for every slot level above 5th.

Modified Vore Feats

Agile Predator

You have trained to use finesse instead of brute strength to devour prey.

  • Increase your Strength or Dexterity by 1, to a maximum of 20.
  • You can use Acrobatics instead of Athletics when using the Devour action.

Ambush Predator

You have mastered the art of the surprise attack, and use it to gulp down unwary foes. You gain the following benefits:

  • If you are hidden from a creature, you may make a devour action without grappling the creature first. If you fail, you are considered to have succeeded on grappling the target creature.

Hypnotic Hunger

Prerequisite: Able to cast at least one Enchantment spell

You're a master of coaxing creatures into giving themselves up to you, weaving magic and seductive behavior into an irresitible combination. You gain the following benefits:

  • When you attempt to Devour and Digest a creature that is Charmed by you, it does not count as a hostile or harmful action for the purpose of ending a spell early.
  • A creature Charmed by you makes no Struggle attempts.
  • Every time a creature takes digestion damage from you, it may make a Wisdom saving throw against your Spell Save DC. If it succeeds, the devoured creature may then struggle normally on its turn.
