Feywild Fox

As with the Fey Wanderer’s ties to the Feywild, those that follow the conclave of the Feywild Fox are also tied in to the Feywild. However, where a Fey Wanderer received their awakenening from the Fey, a Feywild Fox actively sought out the conclave, or was otherwise inducted. Tricky and elusive, Feywild Foxes are usually identified through various traits - such as a mask, tail, ears, pendant, etc. - or at least until they disappear once more.

Trickster’s Magic

Starting at 3rd level, you learn an additional spell of 1st level or higher when you reach certain levels in this class, as shown in the Fox Spells table. Each spell counts as a ranger spell for you and is always prepared, but it doesn’t count against the number of ranger spells you know.

Fox Spells
Ranger Level Spell
3rd Dissonant Whispers
5th Phantasmal Force
9th Hypnotic Pattern
13th Hallucinatory Terrain
17th Seeming

Bonus Cantrips

Starting at 3rd level, you learn the dancing lights* and minor illusion cantrips. For you, dancing lights does not require concentration, instead lasting a number of hours equal to your half your Ranger level or until dismissed (no action required).

Fey Alacrity

Beginning at 3rd level, you are aware of how to get the jump on your opponents, in order to get away just as quickly. You gain a bonus to your initiative equal to your Wisdom modifier (minimum of +1).

Pull the Wool

Also at 3rd level, you are capable of minor magics to fool enemies and prevent them from seeing you. As an action, you can force a creature you can see within 30 feet of you to make an Intelligence saving throw. On a failure, the creature cannot perceive you through any means for 1 minute. You may also use this feature for an ally instead of yourself.

You can use this feature twice, and regain all expended uses after finishing a short or long rest.

This increases to 3 uses when you reach 11th level in this class.

Trick

Starting at 7th level, you know how to reactively escape from the grasp of your foes, or perhaps avoid the sightline of a creature. As a reaction when you are targeted by a damaging effect, you may immediately swap positions with one of your dancing lights* that you can see (you teleport to the lights square, and it teleports to your square), gaining half cover until the start of your next turn.

You may also expend a use to use this feature as a bonus action.

You can use this feature a number of times equal to your Wisdom modifier (minimum of once). You regain all expended uses of this feature when you finish a short or long rest. You may also expend a spell slot of 2nd level or higher to use this feature again if you have no uses remaining.

Fox’s Cunning

At 11th level, you are more than capable of telling the difference between illusion and reality, and are also slippery and hard to catch. You have advantage on saving throws against the grappled and restrained conditions, and on any Intelligence and Wisdom checks or saving throws made against illusions or enhantments.

Disappear

Finally at 15th level, you have mastered completely disappearing from the prying eyes of your foes. You are immune to divination magic, and your mind cannot be read against your will. You cannot be tracked by any and all means. You may also take the Dodge action as a bonus action.

Additionally, whenever you are targeted by a damaging effect, you may use your reaction to become heavily obscured and behind half cover against that effect. If this allows you to successfully avoid the attack or other damaging effect, you can immediately use either your Trick or Pull the Wool features without requiring your action.

Optional Features

Various homebrewed features that can be used in order to enhance Feywild Fox’s theme further.

Ranger Variations

Some ranger variants don’t give the ranger Extra Attack, so if that is the case and you plan to use Feywild Fox, add this feature as part of its progression.

Extra Attack

Beginning at 5th level, you can attack twice, instead of once, whenever you take the Attack action on your turn.

20th Level Capstone

If using the Conclave Capstone optional feature from my Ranger tweaks, here is the capstone.

Nonexistence

Starting at 20th level, people seem to forget you exist, until you make your existence known. You are permanently under the effects of pass without trace.

Compatability with Fade’s Ranger

Alter the text for the bonus spells to say that they are always prepared and do not count against the number of spells you can have prepared at any given time and that any bonus cantrips do not count against your known cantrips.

Alter the spell slot text in Trick to say “You may also expend 2 spell points to use this feature again if you have no uses remaining.”

Spells

Homebrewed spells, for use with Feywild Fox and the Ranger and Druid spell lists as a whole.

Fox Flame

Evocation cantrip

Casting Time:
1 bonus action
Range:
Self
Components:
S
Duration:
Up to 1 minute

You summon 3 small flames that circle around you and shed dim light in a single color of your choice in a 5 foot radius per flame. You may also individually move each flame up to 60 feet away from you, though any that move past that wink out of existence.

As part of the same bonus action used to summon the flames, and as a bonus action on subsequent turns, you can expend a flame to launch it an an enemy you can see within 60 feet of you, dealing 3 (1d4+1) psychic damage.

These projectiles behave similarly to magic missile, and as such effects that stop magic missile stop fox flame.

At Higher Levels. You can summon 3 more flames when you reach 5th level (6 flames total) and 11th level (9 flames total), and the damage increases to 5 (1d6 +2) when you reach 17th level.

Classes:
Bard, Sorcerer, Wizard

Further Clarifications

For the sake of saving space, some more specific things are not mentioned in the main brew, so as such, they are placed here. For all intents and purposes, these are meant to be part of the main brew and not simply intentions, so this is RAW, not RAI.

Using Fox Flame

If replacing dancing lights with the fox flame cantrip, you can ignore the bit about ignoring concentration in the Bonus Cantrips, and just having it last a number of hours equal to half your Ranger level or until dismissed.

Trick doesn’t require too much replacement, it just uses the flame from fox flame instead of a light from dancing lights instead.

As for the spell itself, if recasting fox flame when there are already flames active, all of the flames from the previous casting are completely wiped, replaced with the new flames from the fresh casting.

Pull the Wool

Yes, by “cannot be perceived” it means “untargetable by anything that would require sight”, such as a weapon attack or many spells (AoEs can still hit you though). Have fun with a ton of shenanigans, as well as being a god at stealth when out of combat.
