Oath of the WindRunner

Life before death. Strength before weakness. Journey before destination.

Windrunner oaths are themed toward protection, particularly defending innocents or those who are unable to protect themselves.

The Windrunners tend to attract “big sibling” types, who seek to protect the defenseless, but also enjoy action and fighting for what they believe in. They’re primarily scouts, though they often work as special forces groups, able to deliver teams of Radiants behind enemy lines for secret missions. They tend to be the most like conventional soldiers, believing in structures of command, team dynamics, and the importance of a squad of brothers and sisters. They often have larger numbers of squires than other Orders and focus more than any other Order on mastering their weapons.

I will protect those who cannot protect themselves

You have said the 2nd Ideal of the Windrunners. This Ideal shows the world what you see as the greatest virtue you can have in life. To protect others.

3rd-level Windrunner feature

Your oaths have attracted an Honorspren. This spren is bonded to you in ways deeper than any familiar. This spren will stay by your side so long as you stand by your oaths. To depart from the oaths would kill your spren. Take care of your new friend as they grow with you.

You harbor a wellspring of Radiant energy within yourself. This energy is represented by your Stormlight dice, which are each a d6. You have a number of these dice equal to twice your proficiency bonus, and they fuel various psionic powers you have, which are detailed below.

Some of your powers expend the Stormlight die they use, as specified in a power’s description, and you can’t use a power if it requires you to use a die when your dice are all expended. You regain all your expended Stormlight dice when you finish a long rest. In addition, as a bonus action, you can regain one expended Stormlight die, but you can’t do so again until you finish a short or long rest.

When you reach certain levels in this class, the size of your Stormlight dice increases: at 5th level (d8), 11th level (d10), and 17th level (d12). The powers below use your Stormlight dice.

Full Lashing. Using the Full Lashing, a Windrunner can pool Stormlight into an area. All objects that subsequently touch this area will be bonded to the object, sticking them there and hindering their movement. The bond ends when the Stormlight runs out. A Windrunner can pool Stormlight into a small or medium object or a 5 ft square. If a creature attempts to separate the creature or objects stuck with the lashing they must succeed on a DC 25 Strength check.

The Lashing will run out after one minute unless you use a Stormlight Die to refresh it. If you do, roll the die and the Lashing will last for an additional number of minutes equal to the number rolled.

The first time you use this ability after a long rest does not expend a Stormlight die. All other times you use this Lashing expends a die and the Lashing lasts for a number of minutes equal to the number rolled, not one minute.

Strength of a Radiant. When you use Stormlight your basic abilities are enhanced. You become a force to be reckoned with when you use the well of power within you, you're able to push your body beyond what it's normally capable of. Whenever you make a Strength or Dexterity Check or Saving Throw you can expend 1 Stormlight Die and roll it. Add the result to your Strength or Dexterity Check or Saving Throw.

I will protect no matter what.

This oath focuses on protecting others despite one's caveats, but the exact wording varies from individual to individual.

7th-level Windrunner Feature

3rd Ideal

Upon swearing the 3rd ideal you are able to use Stormlight in new ways.

Basic Lashing. The Basic Lashing allows a Surgebinder to bind people or objects to different surfaces or in different directions, effectively changing the direction that gravity pulls them. You can cast Fly once on yourself per long rest. You can expend a Stormlight die to cast Fly on yourself an additional time. You can also cast Levitate once per long rest. Casting Levitate again expends one Stormlight die.

Summon Shardblade. Swearing the 3rd Ideal allows you to summon your spren as a Shardblade appearing to form out of mist. This weapon can take any form you wish, even changing form after summoned though it always deals 2d12 of whatever damage type the weapon usually has. This weapon can effortlessly slice through nonliving matter with ease but will not cut through living creatures, instead forming into mist and severing the soul of the creature leaving their eyes charred and burnt out.

This weapon ignores non magical armor not lined with aluminum and any creature killed by it can not be resurrected by any means short of a Wish spell.

To summon the Shardblade, you expend one Stormlight Die, rolling it, and the Shardblade stays summoned for that many minutes.

Knights Radiant Aura. Your Stormlight can be used to embolden those around you. Whenever you use a feature from this subclass, you can emit Stormlight, causing you to glow and emit an aura allowing friendly creatures, yourself included, in a 10 ft radius to have advantage on saving throws against being frightened or charmed. You also shed bright light in a radius of 10 ft and dim light for an additional 10 ft.

I will continue to protect dispite my failures

A major component of this oath is forgiving oneself for previous failures.

15th-Level Windrunner Feature

You're oaths have progressed, increasing your bond with your spren and your ability to use Stormlight.

You can activate your Knights Radiant Aura once per short rest without using any other Windrunner abilities. You also increase the aura's radius by 10 ft and give friendly creatures advantage on saving throws against being prone. Freindly creatures can also get up from being prone using only 5 ft of movement.

Summon Shardplate. You can use a bonus action to summon Shardplate around yourself. This Shardplate acts as +3 Full Plate Armor and gives you resistance to all magic damage and fall damage. It also gives you advantage on saving throws against any magic effects. If you are not proficient in heavy armor you are still proficient with Shardplate that you've summoned.

You can summon this armor once per long rest for 1 minute disappearing a the end of your turn. You can then use a bonus action to expend a Stormlight Die to roll the die and extend the time by a number of minutes equal to the number rolled.

You can expend a Stormlight Die to summon the armor again after the feature is used, rolling the die. The Shardplate will exist for a number of minutes equil to the result of the die roll.

Gift Shardplate. Your oath to protect allows you to gift part of your armor to others in need at a moments notice. When a creature you can see takes damage you can use your reaction to expend a Stormlight Die and negate some or all of the damage. Roll the die. On an even number the damage is negated entirely, on an odd number the damage is halved.

I will help others protect themselves

This Ideal focuses on the importance of helping others help themselves. A Windrunner must accept that they can not help those who do not wish to be helped and must strive for teaching others self reliance.

20th-Level Windrunner Feature

You have sworn the final Ideal. A feat few others can claim. Stormlight courses through your veins like never before. Whenever you use a feature from this subclass you can emit an aura of Stormlight in a 20 ft radius around you. Hostile creatures in this area take 2d6 radiant damage at the beginning of their turns. You also emit bright light in a radius of 15 ft and dim light for an additional 15 ft.

You can use this ability along with your Knights Radiant Aura.

Conserve Stormlight. Whenever you use an ability that uses a Stormlight Die, you can roll the die. If the result is even you regain that die. Once you use this ability you cannot do so again until you finish a long rest.

Lending Stormlight. As a bonus action you can gift any number of your remaining Stormlight die to an ally. They can use the Stormlight to use any features from this subclass other than Shardblade or Shardplate abilities.
