Druidic Circle - Circle of Valarian

The Beloved of Valarian are women who have forsworn the love of mortals and instead dedicated themselves entirely to the unicorn deity Valaarian, forging a close bond with these celestial beauties. Like many druids they shun civilisation, preferring the forests where they can remain with their faithful companion, often calling on animals instead of people to repel evil and strike against invaders. Beloved of Valarian often have closer emotional bonds with their unicorn companions than even their own family. Just as she relies on her unicorn, so too does the unicorn rely on them.

Though they rarely join the ranks of others, it isn't unheard of for some to join adventuring parties in order to fight against evil, though they would never tolerate associating with those who practice evil acts, and would struggle to understand those who hold a neutral persuasion.

Celestial Companion

At 2nd level when you take up this subclass you become bonded to a celestial Unicorn. This uses the standard Unicorn statistics, with the following changes:-

  • Its maximum hit points cannot exceed your own.
  • It cannot take any Actions (including spellcasting) aside from the Dodge, Dash, or Disengage actions.
  • It does not gain access to its Legendary Actions
  • The Unicorn should be granted death saving throws, similar to any other party member.
  • It adds your proficiency bonus to its armour class and all saving throws.
  • It shares your initiative, and takes its turn after yours. You may command it verbally or telepathically (so long as it is within telepathy range) on your turn at no action cost. If you command it to attack another creature (from 6th level onwards) this requires your Bonus Action.

Only you can ride your Celestial Companion, it refuses to bear any other creatures upon its back, and will very rarely grant permission for any others to even touch it.

In the event your Celestial Companion dies, you can restore it to life by expending a 1st level spell slot as part of a short or long rest.

Uncanny Dodge

At 6th level the blessing of Valarian allows you to evade strikes. When an attacker that you can see hits you with an attack, you can use your reaction to halve the attack's damage against you. If you are riding your Celestial Companion it also benefits from this ability.

Companion's Aid

Also at 6th level, your Celestial Companion can now access its Hooves, Horn, and Healing Touch actions (but not its Multiattack action). In addition, while mounted on your companion , you can make any spell you cast that targets only you also target your unicorn ally.

Valarian's Peace

From 10th level as an action you can cast a variant of the Polymorph spell on all hostile creatures within a 20ft radius. This variant only allows you to transform them into tiny forest creatures such as rabbits or squirrels. Unlike normal Polymorph, each transformed creature is granted additional saving throws at the end of each turn to end the effect early. Just as with the normal Polymorph spell this must be Concentrated on.

Valarian's Peace can be used once, refreshing on a long rest. Once you have used this, you can expend a spell slot of 5th level or higher to cast it again.

Home in the Forest

Also at 10th level, while in a forested or grassland area, you have advantage on Handle Animal, Nature, and Survival ability checks.

Celestial Charger

From 14th level, your Unicorn's Multiattack and Teleport actions are available to it, along with its Innate Spellcasting - however it's At Will spells are instead changed to 1/day.

In addition, it can use its Shimmering Shield Legendary Action as a Reaction to another creature being attacked.

Timelessness

Unicorns age very slowly over thousands of years. Your Timeless Body feature at 18th level is changed to essentially halt all your ageing, so long as your Celestial Companion is alive.
