Mac Asgrel's Mansion

In the event that the PC's wish to explore Mac Asgrel's mansion - potentially after murdering him, or chasing him off - this is the layout for the home. It is by far the largest and most opulent home in Black Lake. Throughout the house there are sconces built into the wall, with sliding covers that reveal glowing blue pelurskite crystals.

Basement

  • Several stone columns support the foundations of the home (orange, crossed circle symbols).
  • Left chamber has one staircase leading to the main floor, and contains a modestly stocked wine rack, as well as two metal lockers (one is empty; one contains a sealed bottle of 120-year-old dwarven Inferno Whiskey, worth 400gp to the right buyer and extremely alcoholic).
  • Right chamber is behind the staircase leading up to the main floor, and its reinforced wooden door is locked (DC 15 Dexterity [Thieve's Tools] check to open; AC 16, 18 HP, immune to psychic and poison damage).
  • Inside are Mac Asgrel's lockboxes containing his personal wealth. Each lockbox is trapped with a Poison Needle trap in the lock (DC 20 Intelligence [Investigation] to find; DC 15 Dexterity [Thieve's Tools] to disarm. If tripped, target takes 1 piercing damage plus 2d10 poison damage, and must succeed on a DC 15 Constitution saving throw or be poisoned for 1 hour).

  • Combined between the two boxes are 300gp, a family heirloom silver and ruby pendant (worth 350gp), the deed to the Mac Asgrel manor, and four small leather pouches. The pouches look worn - DC 15 Intelligence [Investigation] check to determine it was from heat, and from inside of the pouches - and contain approximately 1 pound of a gritty, smoky grey dust each (formerly samples of pelurskite that burned away over time - no way of the PCs knowing this before they visit the Island); value unknown.
  • Contains a small chamber with a wooden pantry. Preserves and dried goods are stored down here where it is colder.

Ground Floor

  • The manor has a small foyer off of the front with a large oaken door that opens inward, with a door chain that allows a four-inch gap to partially open the door with the chain secured. The door has AC 15 and 10 HP. A red velvet carpet runs along its floor all the way to the foot of the grand staircase.
  • Off of the right side of the manor is a shed with a large wooden door that opens inward. In here is kept kindling, as well as tacking supplies; the floor is lined with hay. There is no horse within, though one could be comfortable here. Towards the back is a wooden door that leads into the manor house proper.
  • On the right side is a modest dining room with a round wooden table and four tall-backed, red velvet upholstered wooden chairs. In the back corner is an L-shaped wooden buffet with brass accents, containing fine silverware, a set of white ceramic plates and dishes, several worn linen table cloths, two tarnished silver candelabras, eight crystal wine goblets, and four tarnished silver napkin rings.
  • On the right side is a kitchen chamber that contains a cast iron wood-burning range, whose pipes extend out through the right wall to let out smoke. There is a pantry with tools and utensils and a small iron insulated ice box for storing perishables.
  • The grand staircase has a landing ten feet up with a round red velvet rug. The stairs are fitted with a brass banister (which has seen better days and is partially tarnished) and lead off in either direction to a landing up to the second floor.
  • Hanging on the walls are several six-foot tall, three-foot wide blue-and-yellow silken banners bearing the Mac Asgrel family colours. They are somewhat faded and obviously rather old.
  • On either side of the grand staircase are two doors set into the wall. Each leads down into the basement; one into the wine cellar and one into the main chamber, close to the treasury.
  • There are no visible windows on this floor.

Second Floor

  • Two sets of stairs lead up to the landing from the ground floor. Brass banisters frame the stairways, and beyond the backs of the left and right walls are closed off to prevent drafts from flowing up from an open doorway.
  • Up another landing of stairs is a grand piano set in an alcove that sits off the back of the manor, supported from below by three stone columns. It's lacquered black finish has been kept remarkably pristine.
  • On the left side is Mac Asgrel's master bedroom. There is a four-poster bed with curtains made to resemble the family colours of blue and yellow, and its rails and posters are brass. Beside it is a wooden bedside table that contains a pair of reading spectacles, a book entitled Embracing Change - Reflections on Transmutation Magic, and a sheathed dagger with a carved bone handle (worth 20gp). There are two armoires containing Mac Asgrel's fine, if dated, clothes. Directly across from the foot of the bed is a vanity mirror with combs and brushes, some older perfume, and a wooden stool. In the bottom right corner of the room is a cupboard where a ceramic chamber pot is stored.
  • Note: If the PCs spook Mac Asgrel, he will try to get up to his bedroom and lock himself in before he considers magically escaping the manor entirely. He will try to stealthily make his way up if he casts Mislead when the PCs come to his front door. The bedroom door is wooden (AC 15, 18 HP) and has an iron lock ( DC 15 Dexterity [Thieve's Tools] to pick). Mac Asgrel will wedge a cast iron doorjam into the space underneath which imposes disadvantage on the PCs' attempts to force the door open, whether ability checks or attacks. If they persist on getting to him, he pleads for them to leave him before ultimately casting a spell to transport out of this place and into a hovel in the woods.
  • On the right is Mac Asgrel's study. Its shelves are lined with books collected, and on the far wall is a writing desk and chair. Within drawers of the desk are quills and ink bottles, as well as paper records of Mac Asgrel's business dealings dating back about eighty years.
  • There are no visible windows on this floor. More Mac Asgrel family banners line the walls.
