The Urusion Knights Chapter

Their time has come.

Backstory

Born with Purpose

The Urusion Knights, (Giant Bear Knights in Low Gothic) were among those created during the Ultima Founding, Consisting primarily of Primaris Space Marines and were made from the gene-seed of Rogal Dorn, Primarch of the Imperial Fists. The first five hundred of the Chapter were amongst those who went into stasis many millennia ago to undergo the process to become Primaris Space Marines. The Chapter, although low in numbers was officially founded near the end of the Indomitus Crusade as a standing force in a new subsector in the Eastern Fringe where they would safeguard the established Imperial worlds. Among those worlds they claimed the frozen world of Devanon IV to be their homeworld, a cold and barren planet with harsh wilderness, weather and deadly wildlife.

There they watch over the sector at their fortress-monastery “Denaheim”, for any sign of warp activity. Chapter Master Ordin, the first of his Chapter lead his companies with an iron fist but has also a strong bond with his battle brothers and the humans they watched over. All of his Captains look up to him, follow his orders with pride but are not afraid to speak their minds on military matters. Together as one they stand unbroken. Their purpose is to watch over the subsector, something that keep them vigilant at all times. With two major feudal worlds under their watch, heretics and pagan beliefs were always a high risk.

Not long after the Chapter had established their foothold in the subsector, one of their worlds sent a distress call to their chapter world however the message had taken months to arrive and the Chapter acted fast even if they presumed the worst. Their world was not going to fall into the hands on the enemy. The planet, Devanon Prime was a simple Agricultural world, covered in farming fields and facilities. At the time of their arrival, the planet was in complete disarray, fields were dead and the population was fighting among themselves. It had seemed that there was a slight climate change that caused millions of crops fields to die, something the planet could not afford and thus a majority of the world's population had turned to the dark powers.

The Chapter was quick to act and began exterminate everything in their path. Signs of chaos corruption was clear across the fields and population. Rott and disease had taken hold on everything living on the planet. As the Chapter set everything ablaze the population tried to stop them by throwing themselves at the marines, a hopeless endeavour but the sheer number of people that came at them was beyond what they expected. The Chapter kept their march as they gunned down thousands upon thousands of tainted people. The further they got the more corruption could be found, the rott was taking root and among the plagued population demons began to appear.

The fight began increasingly more difficult as the rott was covering so much land but the marines remained unbroken. Tides of sick people stormed their battle lines and daemons emerged among the corpses causing battle lines to waver. The fighting was long, tough and dreadful but in the end they managed to kill every last living soul on the planet. After the warfare was settled, the Chapter ordered a second scourge across the world just to be sure. It was a victory but with great cost, few marines lost their lives but the loss of the world was high as it put some of the other planets in the sector in a tough situation. Just decades after leaving the planet, it had become categorized as a death world after many failed attempts at colonize the world.

Becoming the Knights

Decades after the destruction of Devanon Prime, the surrounding worlds had struggled with their own food production. Some more than others, amongst them were the world of Devanon II; a Knight world in the subsector which they simply could not lose The people there however was far more vigilant than the previous world tainted by chaos.

House Crowmore ruled the world and while it had been quite self-sufficient for thousands of years the loss of Devanon Prime caused them to become the prime source of food production in the subsector. Although they had abundantly large patches of open land their technologically was limited to the nobility. Millions of low class citizens were granted land from their lords in order to farm. This displeased some of the regional lords as well as some people who were already working hard. Two battle companies from the Urusion Knights were there to maintain order during the swift but it was clear some people was unhappy about their presence and the High King had failed to keep the population under strict control.

The High King trusted his lords completely and ensured that they would have their people work in no time. However weeks later, people began to disappear and food production had stopped. One lord stood up towards the orders of the High King and the Chapter. A short but gruesome battle took place on the open field, the peasants were massacred by the Space Marines and the loyalist. Days later the same thing happened again, another Lord this time and more peasants were massacred. It was later found out that one of the lords had convinced several others to turn on the rest. The man had given into the influence of chaos and sought to spark a civil war for dark gods.

The battle companies sent word to the rest of the Chapter then began their march towards the heretics. The madness had quickly managed to get a foothold across the region and lesser demons were roaming the countrysides killing everything in their paths. The marines managed to secure land quickly but the demons proved to be a great challenge to be sure with the two companies. They kept getting flanked from all sides by demons and possessed heretics.

While the battle companies moved close to source of the warp activity, demons and heretic forces drew closer to the Capital of the world where House Crowmore was seated. The Capital was heavily guard by large warmachines such as Imperial Knights and their own military known as the Kingsguard. They kept most heretics at bay but they had never fought daemons before and just as they were about to retreat the rest of the Chapter arrived in orbit. The forces of Chaos were pushing in on every side of the capital, killing people by the thousands but the Kingsguard had their moral restored at the sight of the ships in orbit.

Several other Companies dropped down on the surface of the planet and began their assault on any heretic stronghold. Within hours the Capital was secured under Imperial control and the Kingsguard rallied their men and women to secure each Capital gateway. The Space Marines began their assault to push back the remaining chaos forces while the first and second company were closing in on the center of the warp activity. The closer they got the more aggressive the daemons became and once they arrived to what turned out to be a large warp gate they began their assault to seal it. The man who once were a regional Lord was no longer human and had turned into a large abomination. As the battle became more hectic and bloody the Marines began to struggle due to the amount of daemons that was pouring out of the warp gate.

The Lord abomination went into a rampage and threw himself towards the marines. Several marines were heavily wounded and torn to shreds by it’s claws. The Chapter’s Chief Librarian was evoking all his power in order to try and seal the warp gate as it slowly drained him of his life by doing so. As the gate finally closed, a huge ripple shook the ground and the daemons became frantic which gave the marine the perfect moment to take them out. The remaining companies purged the last heretic and reached the first and second company where they quickly removed every fallen brother.

Once the world was back under complete Imperial control, things were slowly going back to normal however the High King had not survived the attack on the Capital. Prince Alexandros of House Crowmore, who fought with the Kingsguard later on inherited the title of High King and the Knight House sworn fidelity to the Chapter for saving them from certain destruction. Over time Devanon II became yet again a prosperous world with fine cities that provided food for the subsector and recruitment for the Chapter.

So much that at the age of 12 he had an arranged marriage with another noble family for a strong lineage and political gains. But his dreams of rising in the ranks of the Kingsguard was short lived as just months after his marriage and acceptance into the guard he was suddenly taken off world.

Now stranded on an unknown frozen world, he was tasked to reach the highest peak and to walk through the gates of Denaheim. With nothing but his own knowledge and skill to rely on he wasted no time waiting around. He kept himself moving to keep his blood running and used his survival skills to make it through the cold terrains. Much harsher terrain than he had encountered on his homeworld however that did not stop him, his thoughts of his family and future kept him on his feet.

After travelling through the frozen plains he finally found the peak he was told about, he made it there and the gates opened before him. He was embraced by men covered in cloth and escorted by giant soldiers he only seen in paintings and heard tales of among the guard. At Denaheim, Anderos underwent the extreme indoctrination and training to become a member of the Urusion Knights Chapter. After years of extreme transmutation into becoming an astartes, Anderos had now become something much more than he could ever dream of.

As a member of the Chapter he much like in his former life, aspired to rise in the ranks and to protect humanity for the Imperium. After several small skirmish battles on various worlds he managed to reached the rank of Lieutenant under the command of Captain Marceus Dawn of the 4th Company. Years later, he was sent to his homeworld to take out a rebellious faction that was close to cause a civil war amongst the Barons.

With the aid of the Kingsguard, led by Major Manius, the attacks were swift and destructive. They rebels were quickly dealt with but at great loss of civilian life, Anderos did not mourn but he understood the loss of life. None of the Kingsguard expected the Space Marines to give more aid but Anderos saw his homeworld in sorrow and had his company aid the local Kingsguard. Something Manius was very grateful of, little did they both know they were family. Manius was the son Anderos never knew he had, Manius only knew of his father from his early achievements and had pursued the same goals. However before he managed to make a name for himself he was taken from his home and thrown into a frozen wasteland.

He was made to go through the trials of the Chapter against his will, he had to survive and find the gates of Jotunhold. He questioned himself why he would try to find this Jotunhold, along the way he ran into another human who had also been left in the cold and was on the brink of giving up to the harsh weather.

Marceus stopped and helped the stranger by lighting a fire as night was arriving. He managed to save the stranger whom's name was Redrik, together they tried to reach Jotunhold and they kept each other going. Once they arrived at the bottom of the mountain where Denaheim lied they were ambushed by local wildlife. Large beast covered in razorsharp fur charged them.

They began to ran up the mountain however the beast caught up to them easily in the heavy snow and struck Redrik from behind. With claws and tusks so deadly they tore his leg off with one swift slash. Marceus refused to leave Redrik behind and turned around towards the beasts. With no weapon to defend himself with he began to shout and charged the beasts hoping he would scare them.

However the beasts showed little fear and one of them began to charge as well. Both were running towards each other, suddenly the beast was blown backwards in a large crimson mist before a large bang almost deafened Marceus. The rest of the beasts fled from Redrik and Marceus turned around to see three Astartes.

They looked at him and gave him a nod before turning around towards Jotunhold that lied not more than a hundred meters away from them. Marceus ran over to Redrik and helped him up, yet again refused to leave him behind.

Marceus went through the process to become an Astartes and member of the Urusion Knights however Redrik did not survive the process due to his injuries.

Years later Marceus rose to the rank of Captain of the 4th Company. He and his brothers in arms have aided humanity many times under his command and was one of the companies to aid the people of Devanon II after their demonic incursion.

Chapter Culture

Chapter Doctrine

The Urusion Knights differ from their founding chapter on many things but they look up to their founding Chapter with great pride as one of the great protectors of mankind.

The Urusion Knights maintain an order of knighthood within the Chapter, from regular Battle-brothers to Noble Captains they all had a sense of chivalry and order. The Chapter Master often held a meeting called Thing with the ten Noble Captains of each Company to discuss all matters revolving the Chapter and their protectorate worlds.

However the Chapter is very withdrawn as they maintain a watchful eye from the stars for any threats. They visit their protectorate worlds during certain events to showcase their might in great wargames and grand duels.

Especially on Devanon II where the Knight House Crowmore have a yearly parade of their Kingsguard and Imperial Knights. The grand duels are viewed by thousands of locals and are fought with ceremonial blades. While it might just be fun for the marines, the events often go down in history for the local population.

On Devanon IV the members of the Chapter participates in long dormant meditaction at their fortress-monastery "Denaheim" and take part in violent hunts against the local wildlife. Challenging for both new recruits and old veterans.

Chapter Recruitment

Their fortress-monastery "Denaheim" stands on the tallest mountain and surrounded by icy oceans. A real test of endurance and will for one to try and reach Denaheim on foot is given to new recruits. The Chapter recruits from the neighbouring planets like the Knight world Devanon II and the mining world Kravgard. Recruits from Devanon II are primarily trained to become part of infantry unlike the recruits from Kravgard who are trained to operate engines of war. Both the recruits undergo the same trial. After being apointed by the Barons of their homeworld, they are taken away by the Chapter at a young age only to be dropped off in the middle of nowhere on Devanon VI with nothing but the words "Do not break, reach Denaheim and the gates shall open." from giants they only heard tales of.

The recruits have to adapt, stay alive and reach Denaheim on their own. Those who manage to reach Denaheim within the first week are often redirected to become part of the 10th company as scouts while others who take longer are placed within various reserve companies.

Combat Doctrine

The Chapter primarily use heavy armored tanks and specializes in various bolter weaponry. Certain Companies like the 1st and 2nd prefer a direct approach and enjoys close combat.

Companies

This is one area where the Urusion deviates from the Codex Astartes. Once the Chapter established it's foothold within the Archonia Sub-sector, recruiting become a priority to muster their numbers. This quickly led to a large amount of qualified recruits which forced the Chapter to establish five more companies in order to keep the Chapter organised. The 1st - 5th Company remain as Battle Companies who are always at the ready to strike a threat. Meanwhile 6th - 10th Company were reformed to what they call Bastion Copmanies. They maintain defensive positions around the sub-sector. Then the 11th - 15th company are the Reserve and Scout Companies. The 12th and 14th company are dedicated scout However each company is unique by their strategies and doctrines.

Chapter Auxiliary

The "Mongorian Cohort" is an adopted human auxiliary force of the Urusion Knights. They become the Chapter's own auxiliary after a very brief display of blind courage but also completely foolish. One day they arrived on the barren Chapter world of Devanon II and to the Astartes dismay the humans began to lay siege to their Fortress Monastery. The Astates at the Monastery were baffled by this act, they almost found it amusing seeing their low numbers and their inferior weaponry.

However some Captains could not help but see their courage to do something like this. One Captain took some of his brothers and decided to face the battle ready humans. Their weapons did nothing to stop the Astartes charge, they quickly managed to wipe out half their force before they surrendered and the "siege" was over within the hour.

The remaining humans were questioned about their actions and where they had come from. Turned out they were a company of outcast mercenaries from a nearby world who no longer needed their services after the arrival of the Urusion Knights. They thought they would test their worth by fighting those who had replaced them. Although they had never fought Astartes before.

Some of the Astartes thought it would be wise to put the remaining humans to use. Give them new purpose, to serve the Emperor here on their Chapter world. And thus, the Chapter adopted the remaining forces to ward the world of Devanon II.
