Cooking
Around the campfire, it is customary to cook, eat and drink. This supplement covers the art of cooking creature parts into meals for different effects.
Cooking Process
Recipes can be cooked over a fire during a short or long rest. The amount of portions created depends on each recipe, and they become inedible a day or two after being cooked, unless preserved. Consuming a portion takes as little as 1 minute and you are able to eat another portion after 4 hours.
To cook something, you choose how many times you wish to cook a recipe. At the end of the cooking time, you must make a Wisdom or Intelligence check (your choice), adding the proficiency bonus if you are proficient with Cook's utensils This is hereby called a Cooking check.
On a success, you create the amount of meals you chose. On a failure, all ingredients are wasted, and the meal does not provide any effects or is inedible.
Categories
There are two categories of recipes: simple and complex.
Simple Recipes
These recipes do not require a kitchen, and can be cooked on a campfire or similar source of heat. They include eggs, meats, and stews. These recipes take 1 hour to cook.
Complex Recipes
These recipes require a kitchen to be cooked. They include broths, desserts, pastries, and soups. These recipes take 2 hours to cook.
Gaining Recipes
A character with proficiency in Cook's utensils starts with 3 simple recipes and 2 complex recipe of their choice. To acquire more recipes, there are a multitude of avenues:
- Purchasing or being taught at a cost, as seen in each individual recipe description.
- Finding or being gifted one.
- Experimentation, as explained below.
Once known, a character knows the full description of a recipe, including the Failure Effect.
Experimentation
A cook knows the names of many recipes, however; one does not know the recipe itself. In order to teach yourself a recipe, you must spend an hour to make a progress of 10 gp towards the cost of the recipe, which counts as light activity. During this time, you must have access to fresh samples of the special ingredient as well as a source of heat or fire.
When you reach a factor of 100 gp for the progress towards a recipe, you must succeed a Cooking check, or suffer the failure effect of the recipe.
Once your progress reaches the cost of the recipe, the ingredients for one recipe are consumed, and you add that recipe to your known ones.
Experimentation Example
You want to learn the recipe for a Basilisk Steak. The recipe cost is 500 gp, therefore will take 50 hours to obtain, which can be during downtime, and short or long rests.
In order to begin, you will require enough of the special ingredients to make the recipe once. In this case, you'll need 1 pound of basilisk meat, kept fresh throughout the process.
At each 100 gp mark of progress (each 10 hours), you will have to make a Cooking check against the recipe's Cooking DC, or suffer the Failure Effect, if any. In this case, you'll have to make a check at the 100, 200, 300, 400 & 500 gp marks.
When you reach the 500 gp mark, the 1 pound of basilisk meat is consumed (the meal is not created) as well as the required spices. You now add the Basilisk Steak recipe to your known recipes.
Ingredients
Each recipe requires a special ingredient to gain a special effect, which normally needs to be either fresh or kept cool. This ingredient differs for each recipe, however; recipes all require spices. The measure of spices you hold is measured in silver and gold pieces, and can be restocked at most villages, towns and cities.

Template for Creating Recipes
Something to consider is how many portions you can make with a single monster's corpse. Use that as the first step in determining how many units or pounds of flesh are required. If using a category of monster, use the lowest CR.
- Special Ingredient: Either pick a number of units (ex: 1 eyestalk) or the weight of some meat
- Portions Created: Multiply the ingredient weight or units by the appropriate spice cost
- Weight / Portion: Use common sense, if you want to reduce it you can make it a recipe that would require it to be lowered (ex: only some of the meat is usable or where it has to be removed after being infused into a broth)
- Cooking DC: 11 + CR (rounded down, maximum 30)
- Failure Effect: If the creature has an effect that could be interesting, add it to a degree as a Failure Effect
- Effect: The power of the effect should be relative to the power of the creature. Duration can be used to lessen or buff an effect
CR | Recipe Cost | Spice Cost |
---|---|---|
0-3 | 500 gp | 1 gp |
4-7 | 1,000 gp | 2 gp |
8-11 | 1,500 gp | 3 gp |
12-15 | 2,000 gp | 4 gp |
16-19 | 2,500 gp | 5 gp |
20-23 | 3,000 gp | 6 gp |
24-27 | 3,500 gp | 7 gp |
28-30 | 4,000 gp | 8 gp |
Gathering from Creatures
Creature parts are used as alchemical materials, cooking and for creating armor and weapons for the adventurers, which some of them gives special features. Others take some of the creature parts as trophies and decorations for their armor and houses. Some are even used in cooking, as shown in chapter 8.
If you want to extract parts of animals and creatures, you must make an Intelligence (Nature) check for common creatures, an Intelligence (Arcana) or an Intelligence (Religion) check for rarer creatures. You can also make a Wisdom (Survival) instead an Intelligence check when harvesting parts.
On a failed check, the part is destroyed or damaged. It's up to the DM to determine which check is made depending on how common that creature is in the world, and its type.
DC: 15 + 1/2 of the creature's CR (Creatures with a CR less than 2 don't add the CR to the DC)
The number of checks you can make and the time used for harvesting all the parts of a creature depends of the size of the creature as shown in the following table. For example, if you harvest a medium sized creature it will take one hour for the whole process, even if you only make 1 check.
Creature Size | Max. harvest checks | Total time to harvest |
---|---|---|
Tiny | 1 | Two hours |
Small | 1 | 30 minutes |
Medium | 2 | One hour |
Large | 3 | One hour |
Huge | 4 | Two hours |
Gargantuan | 5 | Two hours (minimum) |
Each successful check gives you a number of units depending on the creature size as shown in the following table, which can be used for creating new pieces of equipment, cooking ingredients or as alchemical materials.
Creature size | Units collected per check |
---|---|
Tiny | 1/4 unit |
Small | 1/2 unit |
Medium | 1 unit |
Creature size | Units collected per check |
---|---|
Large | 2 units |
Huge | 3 units |
Gargantuan | 4 units |
You can only make one check for each part you want to harvest. For example, a character can make 3 checks for harvesting a large sized dragon, but he can only use one of the checks to harvest the scales, and the other two checks can be used for other parts of the dragon (like an essential organ and the horns).
Getting Meat (Foraging Variant)
While the characters can forage to survive on the wilderness, they also can hunt down and kill a creature to harvest the meat and use it as food. The meat they yield spoils after a single day if uneaten. Eating spoiled meat might require a Constitution saving throw to avoid throwing up the food or getting diseased.
A character can make a Wisdom (Survival) check to try to collect meat as food. The DC for the check is typically 15, but its up to the DM to modify the DC. The amount of meat harvested is determined by the creature size, as shown in the creature food yield table below.
Getting meat does not count on the maximum harvest checks you can make to harvest a creature.
Creature Food Yield by Size
Size | Food Gained |
---|---|
Tiny | 1 lb. |
Small | 4 lb. |
Medium | 16 lb. |
Size | Food Gained |
---|---|
Large | 32 lb. |
Huge | 64 lb. |
Gargantuan | 128 lb. |
