Grappling Hook

Improvised Weapon

A grappling hook can be used as an improvised weapon by tying it to standard length of rope (50'). The hook has no effect on creatures that are formless.

You use your Attack action to attack with the hook, which is considered a martial ranged weapon with a normal range of 20 feet and a long range of 50 feet. The weapon deals 1d4 piercing damage and has the special and thrown properties.

Special. A large or medium creature becomes entangled by the grappling hook until it is freed.

When you make an attack with the hook, the distance between you and the creature defines the rope's initial radius. The entangled creature is free to move within the radius created by the rope. While the distance between you and the creature is equal to this radius, the rope is taut. While the distance is less than this radius, the rope is slack. The creature is unable to move beyond this radius unless it is freed.

If the rope is slack, you may use your action to reel in up to 10 feet of rope, shortening its radius by the same amount.

If the rope is taut, you may use your Attack action to make a special ranged attack to yank the entangled creature, either to knock it prone or pull it closer to you. If you are able to make multiple attacks with the Attack action, this attack replaces one of them.

The target must be no more than one size larger than you. Instead of making an attack roll, you make a Strength (Athletics) check contested by the target's Strength (Athletics). If you win the contest, you either knock the target prone or pull the target 5 feet towards you.

An entangled creature can use its action to free itself using the options below:

  • The creature may attack the rope for 5 slashing, acid or fire damage, which frees the creature and severs the grappling hook from the rope.
  • The creature may attempt to wrest the rope out of your hands. Make a Strength (Athletics) check contested by the target's Strength (Athletics) check. If the creature succeeds, you lose your grip on the rope or fall prone. The rope must be taut to attempt this method.
