Kesto Brighteyes' Codex of Genasi

Genasi are humanoids infused with the power of the Inner Planes. There are three types of genasi most prevalent though the multiverse. First are members of the various sentient races who have a heritage that included some planar being from one of the elemental planes, most often a genie (dao, djinn, efreet, or marid), which is whence their name is derived.

Then there are the genasi who are born from one or more genasi parents. Frequently the children of mixed parentage produce the so called para-elemental genasi.

Finally, are the plane-touched genasi, created when an unborn child is infused with the magical power of one of the Inner Planes. This can happen when the mother visits one of the planes, or is near a planar portal or powerful magical event. In any case, all genasi share certain traits.

Additionally Genasi are further subcategorized into four groups : Elemental Genasi, Para-elemental Genasi, and Positive and Negative Quasi-elemental Genasi.

General Genasi Traits

Your genasi character has certain characteristics in common with all other genasi.

Languages. You can speak, read, and write Common and Primordial. Primordial is a guttural language, filled with harsh syllables and hard consonants. Creatures that speak either Aquan, Auran, Ignan, or Terran can understand and be understood by you.

Ability Score Increase. When determining your character’s ability scores, increase one score by 2 and increase a different score by 1, or increase three different scores by 1. You can't raise any of your scores above 20.

Age. Genasi mature at about the same rate as humans and reach adulthood in their late teens. They live somewhat longer than humans do, up to 120 years.

Alignment. Independent and self-reliant, genasi tend toward a neutral alignment.

Size. Genasi are as varied as their mortal parents but are generally built like humans. You are Medium or Small. You choose the size when you select this race.

Speed. Your base walking speed is 30 feet.

Air Genasi

Whether descended from the Djinn, or simply touched by the raw energies of the Plane of Air, these genasi are as changeable as the weather. Their disposition shifting easily, quickly, and as erratically as the breeze, they are swift to make rivalries and are fiercely competitive about anything their capricious nature indicates is worthy. However, all air genasi are well respected by denizens of the Plane of Air.

Air genasi’s skin tones include many shades of blue, along with the full range of human skin tones, with bluish or ashen casts. Sometimes their skin is marked by lines that seem like cracks with bluish-white energy spilling out. An air genasi’s hair might blow in a phantom wind or be made entirely of clouds or vapor.

Air Genasi Additional Traits

Suggested Ability Score Increase. Increase your Dexterity Score by +2.

Light-footed. You connection to elemental Air lends you preternatural grace. Your walking speed is 35 feet.

Darkvision. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light and in darkness as if it were dim light. You discern colors in that darkness only as shades of gray.

Unending Breath. You can hold your breath indefinitely while you’re not incapacitated.

Lightning Resistance. You have resistance to lightning damage.

Mingle with the Wind. You know the Shocking Grasp cantrip. Starting at 3rd level, you can cast the Feather Fall spell with this trait, without requiring a material component. Starting at 5th level, you can also cast the Levitate spell with this trait, without requiring a material component. Once you cast Feather Fall or Levitate with this trait, you can’t cast that spell with it again until you finish a long rest. You can also cast either of those spells using any spell slots you have of the appropriate level. Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma is your spellcasting ability for these spells when you cast them with this trait (choose when you select this race).

Earth Genasi

All earth genasi have inherited some measure of control over earth, with many reveling in their superior strength and solid power. Earth Genasi are slow and meticulous by nature, never rushed when an important decision must be made, they try to consider any problem from all angles and carefully weigh the possible consequences of their actions.

These genasi tend to be quiet individuals willing to listen thoroughly to those around them. Slow to anger, and even slower to forget a slight, earth genasi make reliable friends and lasting enemies.

The elemental power of Earth manifests differently from one individual to the next. Some earth genasi always have bits of dust falling from their bodies and mud clinging to their clothes, never getting clean no matter how often they bathe.

An earth genasi’s skin can be the colors of stone and earth or a human skin tone with glittering sparkles like gem dust. Some have lines marking their skin like cracks, either showing glimmering gemlike veins or a dim, yellowish glow. Many earth genasi hair can appear carved of stone or crystal or resemble strands of spun metal.

Earth Genasi Additional Traits

Suggested Ability Score Increase. Increase your Strength score by +2.

Superior Darkvision. You can see in dim light within 120 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You discern colors in that darkness only as shades of gray

Legacy of the Dao. You can move across difficult terrain without expending extra movement if you are using your walking speed on the ground or a floor. You also have advantage on saving throws to resist spells and magical effects that would petrify you.

Earth's Embrace You know the Mold Earth cantrip. Starting at 3rd level, you can cast the Pass Without Trace spell with this trait, without requiring a material component. Starting at 5th level, you can also cast the spell Maximilian's Earthen Grasp with this trait, without requiring a material component. Once you cast Maximilian's Earthen Grasp or Pass Without Trace with this trait, you can’t cast that spell with it again until you finish a long rest. You can also cast it using any spell slots you have of 2nd level or higher. Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma is your spellcasting ability for these spells when you cast them with this trait (choose when you select this race).

Fire Genasi

Fire genasi are full of life and passion. Though not innately evil, as many believe, the most arrogant and selfish of the genasi are often fire genasi. Fire genasi generally like to be at the center of things, quick to take up causes of glory and fame, but also becoming bored easily if things get difficult or drawn out. They begin far more endeavors than they finish, though most would refuse to admit this as a failing.

They are high-strung and full of energy, jumping at the chance to try something new and exciting while remaining elitists at heart. The multiverse is their playground, and they don’t mind if a few of their toys get burnt in their fun.

Fire genasi channel the flamboyant and often destructive nature of flame. They show their heritage in their skin tones, which can range from deep charcoal to shades of red and orange. Some bear skin tones common to humanity but with fiery marks, such as slowly swirling lights under their skin that resemble embers or glowing red lines tracing over their bodies like cracks. Fire genasi hair can resemble threads of fire or sooty smoke.

Fire Genasi Additional Traits

Suggested Ability Score Increase. Increase your Intelligence score by +2.

Darkvision. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. Your ties to the Elemental Plane of Fire make your darkvision unusual: everything you see in darkness is in a shade of red.

Fire Resistance. You have resistance to fire damage.

Water Genasi

Water genasi are the most independent of the elemental planetouched, having as little in common with their parents as with other genasi, with no two water genasi being exactly alike in personality. Some are patient and cunning, choosing to gradually wear away resistance to their plans, while others are stormy and violent, preferring to drown their foes in their wrath.

They may have virtually any trait or goal, exhibiting a versatility that rivals even that of humans. They seem more than a little off to most, but they can be surprisingly pleasant if one treads lightly in dealings with them.

Their skin is often shades of blue or green, sometimes a blend of the two. If they have a human skin tone, there is a glistening texture that catches the light, like water droplets or nearly invisible fish scales. Their hair can resemble seaweed, waving as if in a current, or it can even be like water itself. Though they have no visible gills, they can breathe water as easily as air, and their voices sometimes sound like the sonorous songs of whales or dolphins.

Water Genasi Additional Traits

Ability Score Increase. Increase your Wisdom score by +2.

Acid Resistance. You have resistance to acid damage.

Amphibious. You can breathe normally in both air and water.

Darkvision. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light and in darkness as if it were dim light. You discern colors in that darkness only as shades of gray.

Swim. You have a swimming speed of 30 feet.

Call to the Waves. You know the Shape Water cantrip. Starting at 3rd level, you can cast the Create or Destroy Water spell with this trait. Once you cast Create or Destroy Water with this trait, you can’t cast that spell with it again until you finish a long rest. You can also cast this spell using any spell slots you have of the appropriate level. Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma is your spellcasting ability for these spells when you cast them with this trait (choose when you select this race).

The Para-Elemental Genasi

By far the most common genasi are those descended from the four Elemental Planes, Air, Earth, Fire, and Water. Slightly less common are para-elemental genasi, who are often descended from the mixed blood of two types of elemental beings.

For example, if the daughter of a mortal and efreet (potentially a fire genasi herself) has a child with a djinni, or an air genasi, that child's descendants might be smoke genasi.

Once fairly rare, as planar scholars and mages became more adept at opening portals and gateways to the various Para-Elemental planes, the number of para-elemental genasi present in the multiverse has increased as well.

Ice Genasi

The common joke is that Ice Genasi must be emotionless since they're so cold-hearted, but the truth is that Ice Genasi are among the most passionate of all genasi. They like to live life to the fullest, and seek out new extremes.

You won't find many meek, timid, sickly types among the ranks of Ice genasi. What you will find, in the main, is a group of hard-drinking, hard-living rowdies with the constitution of oxen. They're boisterous, fun-loving, and always on the lookout for the next party.

In terms of appearance, nearly all Ice Genasi tend towards sharp, angular features. Their skin and hair are either pure white or bluish-white. Additionally, they usually have extremely cold flesh and sometimes have a thin layer of frost in their hair (even during the summer).

Ice Genasi Additional Traits

Suggested Ability Score Improvement. Increase your Wisdom or Charisma score by +2.

Cold Resistance. You have resistance to cold damage, and you ignore the effects of Extreme Cold weather.

Darkvision. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light and in darkness as if it were dim light. You discern colors in that darkness only as shades of gray.

Frost Walk. You can move across difficult terrain created by ice or snow without expending extra movement.

Additionally you can freeze a thin layer of ice below the soles of your feet, and walk across water. Doing so requires you to maintain concentration, as if casting a spell, and each foot of movement costs 1 extra foot

The thin ice sheets beneath your soles melt as soon as you lift your feet, and you cannot carry anything heavier than 5 times your Constitution score with you.

Cold Hands. You know the Frostbite cantrip. Starting at 3rd level, you can cast the Ice Knife spell with this trait, without requiring a material component. Starting at 5th level, you can also cast the spell Snilloc's Snowball Swarm with this trait, without requiring a material component. Once you cast Ice Knife or Snilloc's Snowball Swarm with this trait, you can’t cast that spell with it again until you finish a long rest.

You can also cast these spells using any spell slots you have of the appropriate level. Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma is your spellcasting ability for these spells when you cast them with this trait (choose when you select this race).

Magma Genasi

"Slow, but burning with intense energy" is the description often used to describe the magma genasi. Like their closest cousins the earth genasi, magma genasi tend to be ponderous and deliberate in their outward motions. However, this slow, monolithic movement disguises a fiercely active and intelligent mind.

Many magma genasi harbor a desire to explore, investigate, and truly understand the Multiverse in a scientific way. Many elder magma genasi are profound philosophers due to their constant inquiry into the nature of the Multiverse.

Appearance-wise, Magma Genasi tend to be thick and bulky, but more rounded than their Earth Genasi counterparts. Their skin is warm (even hot) to the touch, and is usually black or dark brown, and laced with streaks of red or bright orange.

Magma Gensasi Additional Traits

Ability Score Increase. Increase your Strength or Intelligence score by +2.

Fire Resistance. You have resistance to fire damage, and you ignore the effects of Extreme Heat weather.

Lava Walk. You can walk across lava and magma as if it were solid ground, and without taking damage.

Darkvision. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. Your ties to the Plane of Magma make your darkvision unusual: everything you see in darkness is in a shade of orange.
Pyroclasm You know the Fire Bolt cantrip. Starting at 3rd level, you can cast the Earth Tremor spell with this trait. Once you cast Earth Tremor with this trait, you can’t cast that spell with it again until you finish a long rest. You can also cast it using any spell slots you have of the appropriate level. Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma is your spellcasting ability for these spells when you cast them with this trait (choose when you select this race).

Additionally, whenever you cast a spell that deals fire or bludgeoning damage, you can choose to switch that instance of damage to the other type.

Ooze Genasi

As one might guess, most ooze genasi (also known as mud or marsh genasi) have a hard time getting respect from the rest of the Multiverse.

While the other Inner Planes have something going for them, from the burning majesty of the Plane of Fire to the immeasurable wealth of the Plane of Earth, there's nothing particularly inspiring about Ooze.

Ooze genasi get this repeatedly dumped into their heads from the moment they step off their native planes, and while some develop a crushing inferiority complex, others become over-confident overachievers or live their lives trying to hold mud, ooze, muck and so forth up as being just as worthy of respect and admiration as any other element.

The skin of an ooze genasi always has the color of mud, and sometimes even seems to drip, though this is just an optical illusion. They also usually have the faint aroma of moist earth about them.

Ooze Genasi Additional Traits

Suggested Ability Score Increase. Increase your Strength or Wisdom score by +2.

Acid Immunity. You have Immunity to acid damage.

Darkvision. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light and in darkness as if it were dim light. You discern colors in that darkness only as shades of gray.

Muddy Maneuvers. You ignore difficult terrain caused by bogs, marshes, swamps, and otherwise muddy terrain. You also have advantage on Strength (Athletics) checks made to grapple creatures.

Rolling in the Muck. You know the Acid Splash cantrip. Starting at 3rd level, you can cast the Ray of Sickness spell with this trait. Starting at 5th level, you can also cast the Ray of Enfeeblement spell with this trait, without requiring a material component. Once you cast Ray of Sickness or Ray of Enfeeblement with this trait, you can’t cast that spell with it again until you finish a long rest. You can also cast these spells using any spell slots you have of the appropriate level. Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma is your spellcasting ability for these spells when you cast them with this trait (choose when you select this race).

Smoke Genasi

Silent, stealthy, and comfortable in shadows, smoke genasi are the most urban of all the Para-elemental and Quasi-elemental genasi. Smoke genasi are dedicated and enthusiastic city dwellers, fascinated by city life like no other race in the Multiverse. Indeed, many smoke genasi become merchants precisely so they can more fully experience the life of the city.

Smoke Genasi always have a faint odor of smoke about them, and this odor can often indicate their mood. The pleasant odor of smoked cedar, for instance, may indicate that they are in a generous mood, while a sharp and acrimoniously smoky odor might indicate anger or jealousy. Smoke genasi tend to have dark gray hair that moves of its own accord like smoke coming off a fire. Their skin is often mottled gray which seems to change coloring and pattern from moment to moment. There is also typically a choking, coughing tone to their speech

Smoke Genasi Additional Traits

Suggested Ability Score Increase. Increase your Charisma or Dexterity by +2.

Smoke and Mirrors. You have proficiency in the Stealth skill.

City slicker. As one who can quickly acclimate to city life, the various trades practiced in major cities come easily to you. You gain proficiency with one type of Artisan's Tools of your choice.

Darkvision. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light and in darkness as if it were dim light. You discern colors in that darkness only as shades of gray.

Unending Breath. You can hold your breath indefinitely while you’re not incapacitated.

Smoke in the Wind. You can cast the Feather Fall spell once with this trait and regain the ability to do so when you finish a long rest. Starting at 3rd level, you can also cast the Pyrotechnics spell once with this trait and regain the ability to do so when you finish a long rest. When cast the Pyrotechnics spell with this trait you can create the smoke effect without an existing flame. One you have cast the Feather Fall or Pyrotechnics spell with this trait you can’t cast that spell with it again until you finish a long rest. You can also cast these spells using any spell slots you have of the appropriate level. Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma is your spellcasting ability for these spells when you cast them with this trait (choose when you select this race).

The Positive Quasi-Elemental Genasi

The Quasi-Elemental Planes tend to be extremely limited with respect to the number of native races capable of interbreeding with humans and demi-humans, and so genasi from these planes typically only occur only when a child of otherwise normal parents is touched by the magic energy of a Quasi-elemental Plane while in the womb. Because of this, Quasi-elemental genasi are the rarest of all the genasi.

In any case, those quasi-elemental planes with a large number of non-native settlers and visitors will produce more Genasi over time than others.

The Quasi-elemental Planes are further subdivided between 2 groups, the Positively aligned Quasi-planes (Lightning, Mineral, Radiance, and Steam) and the Negatively aligned Quasi-planes (Ash, Dust, Salt, and Vacuum)

Lightning Genasi

Lightning genasi are full of life and extremely energetic. Many find themselves full of bright ideas and constantly turn their attentions towards invention, design or artwork. Many also embrace their stormy heritage and dedicate themselves to a storm god.

Lightning genasi look a lot like air genasi, though their skin tends to be darker, often in midnight blue, cloudy gray, or purplish tones, and sometimes, very rarely, bright yellow.

Many lightning genasi possess some physical characteristic that identifies them as a natives of the Plane of Lightning, anything from hair that always stands on end, to tiny electric sparks that dance around their body and hair as they move.

Lightning Genasi Additional Traits

Suggested Ability Score Increase. Increase your Dexterity Score by +2.

Storm's Embrace. You have resistance to thunder and lightning damage

Darkvision. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light and in darkness as if it were dim light. You discern colors in that darkness only as shades of gray.

You can also cast either of those spells using any spell slots you have of the appropriate level. Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma is your spellcasting ability for these spells when you cast them with this trait (choose when you select this race).

Mineral Genasi

Mineral genasi large and imposing - larger even than their earth and magma genasi cousins - but they've got a heart to match. Growing up on a plane where the ground around their homes rivals a king's treasury for worth, most just don't understand the notion of amassing wealth, especially just for the sake of hoarding it.

Some will open up farms or smithies (or something similar), and they'll give folks a chance to come work and learn a trade. Others will open up soup kitchens or resthouses, and some simply make small charitable donations to existing charities. Still others decide that education is the key, and open up small public schools. The list goes on and on, frankly, but one thing remains true: all mineral genasi, in their own way, do what they can to improve the lives of the downtrodden.

Appearance wise, mineral genasi are large, thick and imposing. Their features are sharp and angular, like the gemstones from their native plane. They may also have rough, dark brown skin; smooth, dark grey skin; small (half-inch diameter) crystalline stones of various colors embedded in their flesh (these crumble to worthless dust if somehow removed from the mineral genasi); or eyes that seem faceted (like a cut diamond).

Mineral Genasi Additional Traits

Suggested Ability Score Increase. Increase your Strength or Wisdom score by +2.

Hardened Skin. Your Armor Class increases by +1.

Darkvision. You can see in dim light within 30 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light.

Earth's Bounty. You are naturally proficient with Jeweler's Tools. Additionally whenever you make an ability check using your Jeweler's Tools related to the value and properties of gemstones and other minerals, you are considered proficient in this check and add double your proficiency bonus to the check, instead of your normal proficiency bonus.

Radiance Genasi

Radiance genasi hail from a plane where every moment of their existence is surrounded by, and suffused with, a scintillating, never-ending display of the most beautiful colors and lights in the Multiverse. Vivacious and full of energy, these genasi are by far some of the most beloved of their kind. Radiance genasi almost always attempt to either seek out, or to create, things and locations which, to their minds, introduces "beauty" into the Multiverse.

And, of course, many radiance genasi, whether they're searching for "Beauty" or making their own, will realize that "Beauty" isn't necessarily visual, and they'll begin seeking (or crafting) literature, poetry, music, and so forth. Basically, if it's artistic in any way, there's probably some radiance genasi either doing it or searching it out among the planes

Radiance genasi are visually striking. Their skin is always a vibrant, distinctive color (green, blue, purple, and so on), and their hair is usually a violently contrasting color from their skin, and skin that's warm to the touch.

Radiance Genasi Additional Traits

Suggested Ability Score Increase. Increase your Charisma Score by +2

Artistic Pursuits. You gain proficiency in one type of Artisan's Tools.

Darkvision. You can see in dim light within 30 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. Your ties to the Plane of Radiance make your darkvision unusual: You can discern color in darkness.

Radiant Resistance. Radiant light burns within you. You have resistance to necrotic damage and radiant damage

Storm of Colors. You know the Word of Radiance cantrip. Starting at 3rd level, you can cast the Guiding Bolt spell with this trait. Once you cast Guiding Bolt with this trait, you can’t cast that spell with it again until you finish a long rest. You can also cast this spell using any spell slots you have of the appropriate level. Steam Genasi

The Quasi-Elemental Plane of Steam is known by many names: "The Great Fog," the "Obscuring Mists, or simply "The Hidden." The very image of the plane conjures up visions of secrecy and mystery. As with most things in the multiverse, there's probably something to all these names. That is, if the Steam Genasi are any indication.

Steam Genasi specialize in (and excel at) investigating the unknown. For many, this means unearthing lost secrets and forbidden knowledge. Steam Genasi have a burning curiosity about those areas of the Planes about which there is little (if any) information.

Find a spot on the Planes that no one knows anything about and you can bet that a steam genasi will find some way to get there and return alive to tell the tale.

Appearance-wise, steam genasi are the most human-looking of all the plane-touched, however subtle tells indicate their other worldly nature, such as perpetually wet hair, the odor of fog always about them, a perpetual coating of water droplets on their skin and in their hair, or a faint haze surrounding them, extending about 1 foot from their skin.

Steam Genasi Additional Traits

Suggested Ability Score Increase. Increase your Intelligence score by +2.

Inquisitive Mind. Your inquisitive nature is preeminent. You have proficiency in the Investigation skill.

Darkvision. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light and in darkness as if it were dim light. You discern colors in that darkness only as shades of gray.

Fade Away. As a bonus action, you can partially mimic the properties of steam, and magically turn invisible until the start of your next turn or until you attack, make a damage roll, or force someone to make a saving throw. Once you use this trait, you can't use it again until you finish a short or long rest.

Condensation. You know the Mage Hand cantrip. It appears as a translucent hand made of pure smoke. Starting at 3rd level, you can cast the Fog Cloudspell with this trait. Starting at 5th level, you can also cast the Cloud of Daggers spell with this trait, without requiring a material component. Once you cast Fog Cloud or Cloud of Daggers with this trait, you can’t cast that spell with it again until you finish a long rest. You can also cast either of those spells using any spell slots you have of the appropriate level. Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma is your spellcasting ability for these spells when you cast them with this trait (choose when you select this race).

The Negative Quasi-Elemental Genasi

Ash Genasi

In many respects Ash Genasi are the opposite of their Smoke Genasi counterparts. Whereas Smoke Genasi prefer the closed-in hustle and bustle of a well-populated city, most Ash Genasi harbor a dislike of cities and crowds.

This isn't to say that Ash Genasi are anti-social or that they don't like the trappings of civilization; they just prefer a less hectic existence free of large concentrations of civilization. Many Ash Genasi outside the Plane of Ash become rangers or druids, their lifestyles appealing to their rather solitary natures.

In some cases, these Ash Genasi take a liking to a particular area and settle down to live out a simple, comfortable existence. In other cases they wander from plane-to-plane seeking out either rustic towns and villages or remote, isolated wilderness regions.

Most ash genasi usually have perpetually soot-covered skin, or skin that, while not appearing to be sooty, will leave an ashy residue on anything touching it. They also often have an odor reminiscent of burnt wood, and their skin and hair is most often dark grey, streaked or flecked with white.

Ash Genasi Additional Traits

Suggested Ability Score Increase. Increase your Wisdom Score by +2.

Cold Resistance. Despite being related to the Plane of Fire, the Plane of Ash is bone-numbingly cold. You have resistance to cold damage.

Darkvision. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light and in darkness as if it were dim light. You discern colors in that darkness only as shades of gray.

Poison Resistance. You are able to breathe the poisonous air of Ash. You have resistance to poison damage.

Floating Ash. You have a preference and natural affinity with the wildest and harshest environments. You have proficiency in the Survival skill.

Ember's Legacy. You know the produce flame cantrip. Starting at 3rd level you can cast the Wither and Bloom spell. Once you cast the Wither and Bloom spell with this trait, you can’t cast that spell with it again until you finish a long rest. You can also cast it using any spell slots you have of the appropriate level. Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma is your spellcasting ability for these spells when you cast them with this trait (choose when you select this race).

Dust Genasi

Dust genasi are fascinated by the history of things: Buildings, magical weapons, famous (or infamous) people, regions, towns, you name it.

Most believe that this is because dust genasi are raised on a plane where they routinely see the ultimate embrace which awaits all things, and have therefore developed a curiosity about the life before the decay.

Some focus their research on one particular location, person, or item, and spend the rest of their lives unearthing its history. Others prefer wander the Planes for the most part, occasionally settling down for a year or more in order to more thoroughly investigate a particular item, region or person.

Despite their burning natural curiosity matched only by the magma genasi, most dust genasi have dry, somber personalities. All Dust Genasi feature a colored pattern to their skin reminiscent of sand, and most have a thin, perpetual coating of sand on their bodies and/or in their hair. Some have dusty haze surrounding them, extending about 1 foot out from their body. In others the faint howling of a sandstorm can be heard in their voice.

Dust Genasi Additional Traits

Suggested Ability Score Increase. Increase your Intelligence score by +2.

Sands of Time. You have proficiency in History

Necrotic Resistance. You have resistance to necrotic damage.

Darkvision. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light and in darkness as if it were dim light. You discern colors in that darkness only as shades of gray.

Dust to Dust. The spirits of those who have returned to dust whisper secrets from beyond the veil of death. Before making an ability check with a skill you are proficient in, you can heed the wisdom of these spirits to gain advantage on the roll. You can use this ability a number of times equal to your Proficiency bonus before you take a long rest.

Wisdom of the Lost. You can cast the comprehend languages spell once with this trait, requiring no material components, and you regain the ability to cast it this way when you finish a long rest. You can also cast it using any spell slots you have of the appropriate level. Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma is your spellcasting ability for these spells when you cast them with this trait (choose when you select this race).

Salt Quasi-Genasi

Most genasi that prefer living outside of their native plane have a natural curiosity about the rest of the Multiverse. In salt genasi this curiosity has flowered into a passion for exploring matched only by their Magma, Dust, and Steam genasi cousins.

salt genasi tend to concentrate on exploring the waterways of the planes oceans, lakes, rivers, seas, and even swamps and marshes; any reasonably sized body of water is enough to make the average Salt genasi feel an urge to map its boundaries, explore its expanse, and experience life to the fullest while sailing its surface. Those few who are more interested in profit than in exploration routinely set up shop as ferrymen, or sailors.

In terms of appearance, salt genasi possess often sport an encrusting of salt on their skin and/or in their hair, lips which seem perpetually parched and cracked (although this causes no discomfort to the salt genasi), and an odor of brine about them at all times.

Salt Genasi Additional Traits

Suggested Ability Score Increase. Increase your Charisma score by +2.

Acid Resistance. You have resistance to acid damage.

Amphibious. You can breathe air and water.

Desiccation. When you damage a creature with a weapon attack or a spell, you can cause the attack or spell to deal extra necrotic damage to the creature as you suck the moisture out of their body. The extra damage equals your level. Once you use this trait, you can't use it again until you finish a short or long rest.

Salt in the Wound. You know the Vicious Mockery cantrip. Starting at 3rd level, you can cast the Create or Destroy Water spell with this trait. However you can only Destroy Water when you cast it using this feature.

Vacuum Quasi-Genasi

Despite the Plane of Vacuum literally being an infinite void, somewhere in all that infinity, there are a few settlements (although we can only guess at why they're there). It is from these extremely rare settlements that we get the few Vacuum Genasi known to exist.

Vacuum genasi are unfairly regarded as clueless because they have absolutely no experience with things most everyone else takes for granted. Since they come from a plane that has almost nothing in it, everything is new and exciting to them. They spend a lot of time wandering the planes with an excited, awe-filled expression pasted on their faces, and this is true whether they're looking at Mount Olympus or a pile of cow droppings.

Most vacuum genasi look very gaunt, sometimes to the point of seeming emaciated (although they're perfectly healthy).

Their skin is dry and cool to the touch, and never perspires. Usually, when you get close to a Vaccum Genasi, there seems to be an area of "dead air" around them, extending about 1 foot from their bodies.

Inside this area of "dead air," sounds seem muted, the air seems a little thin, and odors are muted or non-existent.
