Wisp Sticks

A homebrew magic item from my homebrewed world of Atis Thides.

Made from the crushed leaves of the Scarlett Heights flowers that grow along the Reaper's Pass and combined with enchanted gem dust, each of these sticks harbor a variety of magical benefits and penalties based on the flavor used.

Flavor Packs

Each pack comes with 12 sticks which can be broken down into specific flavors, although variety packs and mixed-flavor packs packs are also available.

GENERAL WISP STICK RULES

Stick Duration: 1 hour


  • Each stick has a duration of 1 hour, regardless of the potential benefits having been used up or not.

  • Any spells contained within the sticks that normally require concentration will no longer require concentration.

  • Proper usage of Wisp Sticks require inhalation through the filtered end of each stick.

  • Second-hand inhalation does not grant any of the benefits or penalties normally acquired through proper consumption.

  • Consuming multiple sticks within the duration period of another stick will cause the stacking of both the benefits and the penalties, however consuming multiple sticks of the same flavor in this time period will not cause this stacking effect unless stated otherwise.

  • Consuming more than 2 sticks within 1 hour will result in an Overdose (Overdose rules are to be determined by your DM).

3rd Eye

These sticks are dark purple with a single silver eye scrawled into it. When lit, its nearly black smoke give off a faint sparkle and lavender scent. Tastes like blueberries!


BENEFITS:

All Seeing Eye:

  • You gain the ability to see invisible creatures and objects as if they were visible.

  • You are also able to see into the Ethereal Plane, the creatures and objects there appearing ghostly and translucent.

PENALTIES:

  • Immediately after consumption, an eye grows from your forehead, causing you 1d10 damage.

  • Although you are capable of seeing into the Ethereal Plane, all creatures there within 60ft of you can see you too. You will have disadvantage on against any attacks these creatures make against you.

  • At the end of the stick's duration you hallucinate for the next 1d4 hours.

Cupid

These sticks are purple and fade to pink at one end. They also have a pink band near filter. When lit, pale pink smoke can be exhaled. Tastes like cotton candy!


BENEFITS:

Articulate:

  • You temporarily have advantage on all Charisma rolls against creatures that are not hostile towards you for the duration.

Convincing:

  • Effective immediately after consuming this stick, the next creature you speak to will need to make a Charisma saving throw (DC 15) at disadvantage.
    • If the creature fails this save, they are considered Charmed for the remaining time of the duration.
    • If the creature succeeded their save or is resistant to Charm, they remain unaffected and this part of the benefit ends.

PENALTIES:

  • This stick can be used against a creature ONCE, regardless if it was successful or not. Attempts to use this stick against a creature formerly exposed to its magic results in an automatic failure of the item and end to it's duration.

  • At the end of the stick's duration, you temporarily lose -2 to your total Charisma score until you complete a long rest.

  • DO NOT CONSUME MORE THAN 1 OF THIS FLAVOR IN A 24 HOUR PERIOD!!
    Consumption of this flavor stick more than once in a 24 hour period results in a 50% chance of permanently losing -2 to your Charisma per offense!

Flares

These sticks are bright red. When lit, the tip ignites and sparks like a stick of dynamite. Tastes like cinnamon!


BENEFITS:

Toasty:

  • You temporarily gain fire resistance for the duration.

Add A Little Spice:

  • You gain 3 uses of 1d10 Fire Damage to add to any attack you make. These uses can be used at any time during the 1 hour duration of this stick. All unused charges fade at the end of the stick's duration.

PENALTIES:

  • At the end of the stick's duration, you take 1d10 Fire damage per unused use of Fire Damage.

  • You also have disadvantage on all Constitution rolls and heartburn until you complete your next long rest.

Ghost

These sticks are white and fade into dark gray. When lit, the smoke is only visible for a second before disappearing entirely. Tastes like marshmallow!


BENEFITS:

Tip Toe:

  • You temporarily gain advantage on all Stealth checks for the duration.

Street Smarts:

  • You temporarily gain the ability to use Cunning Action for the duration if you don't have it already.

Hide In Plain Sight:

  • Using this stick allows you to Hide in plain sight, even if there are no places for you to reasonably hide. If the duration ends while you are hiding in this way, you are no longer considered hidden.

PENALTIES:

  • You take a -2 to your initiative rolls for the duration of the stick.
  • You also have disadvantage on all Constitution and Strength rolls for the duration as well.

Glory

These sticks are white with golden swirls that glitter across them. When lit, a tiny halo appears around the lit end and a sparkling gold smoke can be exhaled. Popular among Paladins and Clerics. Tastes like orange cream!


BENEFITS:

Holier Than Thou:

  • You immediately are under the effects of Heroism.

What the Gods Gave Me:

  • You gain the ability to add 1d8 Radiant Damage to all of your attacks for the next 10 minutes.

Favored by the Gods

  • If your alignment is GOOD, you suffer no ill effects from this stick. You are instead effected by BLESS for the next 1d4 minutes after the stick's duration ends.

PENALTIES:

  • If your alignment is NEUTRAL, you are effected by BANE for the next 1d4 minutes after the stick's duration ends.

  • If your alignment is EVIL, you are effected by BANISH for the next 1d4 minutes after the stick's duration ends.

Miasma

These sticks are dull yellow with brown waves. A neon green band wraps around the speckled filter. When lit, the tip ignites neon green and an equally bright green smoke can be exhaled. Tastes like mustard!


BENEFITS:

Halitosis :

  • You gain 2 charges of the spell Stinking Cloud as a breath weapon. These charges can be used at any time during the 1 hour duration of this stick. All unused charges fade at the end of the stick's duration.

PENALTIES:

  • At the end of the stick's duration, make a Constitution saving throw (DC 15).
    • On a fail, you take 1d6 necrotic damage.
    • On a success, you instead take half of the total penalty damage.
  • You also take 1d4 Poison Damage for each charge of Lightning Bolt that was not used before the end of the duration.

  • Additionally, you have incredibly bad breath and a persistent cough until the end of your next long rest.

Moxie

These sticks are yellow with a faint diamond pattern across them. When lit, the tip ignites and sparks like a stick of dynamite. Tastes like lemon drops!


BENEFITS:

False Confidence:

  • You temporarily become immune to Fear and Charm for the duration. You also gain advantage on Persuasion and Intimidation for the duration.

Poised:

  • You gain 1d20+2 temporary hit points which disappear at the end of the duration.

PENALTIES:

  • At the end of the stick's duration, you have disadvantage on all Charisma and Dexterity rolls for the next 1d4 hours.

  • Consuming more than 2 of this flavor in 24 hours leaves you with 1 point of exhaustion and a nasty hangover.

Quill

These sticks are brown with faint yellow pinstripes. When lit, the tip glows bright neon yellow and oily purple smoke with odd triangular sigils can be exhaled. Popular among Goblins. Tastes like lemonade!


BENEFITS:

Porcupine:

  • Consuming this stick results in your skin and armor becoming covered in a thin layer of needle-like spikes, causing you 1d10 damage as they grow. These tiny spikes last for the first 10 minutes immediately after consumption. While this effect is active, anything that strikes you with a melee attack receives 1d8 Acid Damage as backlash.

Prickly:

  • You gain 3 charges of the spell Acid Arrow (aka Melf's Acid Arrow). These charges can be used at any time during the 1 hour duration of this stick. All unused charges fade at the end of the stick's duration.

PENALTIES:

  • At the end of the stick's duration, you temporarily take -2 to your total Constitution score.
  • Additionally, all unused charges of Acid Arrow fade, being replaced with an additional -2 to your Constitution score per unused charge. This penalty lasts until the end of your next long rest.

Roulette

These sticks seem to shimmer and shift color in the light. When lit, the tip sparkles and flickers with wild magic as the smoke exhaled continues to shift colors. Tastes like rock candy!


THESE STICKS HAVE A 50% CHANCE TO APPEAR ONCE A BOX SET OF WISP STICKS HAVE BEEN ENTIRELY CONSUMED!


BENEFITS:

Wild Card:

  • If you manage to obtain and consume this stick, roll for an effect on the Wild Magic Table.

PENALTIES:

Hard To Come By:

  • Once all Wisp Sticks in a box set have been consumed, you have a 50% chance for a Roulette Stick to appear. To use this effect, roll a 1d20:

    • If the number rolled is even, one stick of the original 11 flavors appear in the box.

    • If the number rolled is odd, the Roulette Stick will appear in the box instead.

Spark

These sticks are orange with yellow zig-zag patterns across them. When lit, tiny sparks fly out of the lit end and a faint orange smoke can be exhaled. Tastes like kumquats!


BENEFITS:

Bzzt!:

  • You temporarily gain the cantrip Shocking Grasp for the stick's duration.

High Voltage:

  • You gain 3 charges of the spell Lightning Bolt. These charges can be used at any time during the 1 hour duration of this stick. All unused charges fade at the end of the stick's duration.

PENALTIES:

  • At the end of the stick's duration, make a Constitution saving throw (DC 15).

    • On a fail, you become paralyzed for the next 1d6 minutes.

    • On a success, you are instead stunned for the next 1d4 minutes.

  • Additionally, you take 1d8 Lightning Damage for each charge of Lightning Bolt that was not used before the end of the duration.

Wrath

These sticks are black with dark red swirls. When lit, a faint red smoke can be exhaled. These sticks are designed to stimulate and heighten the user's Rage. Popular among Barbarians and Orcs. Tastes like wasabi/horse radish!


THIS FLAVOR IS STACKABLE! CONSUMING MULTIPLE WILL CAUSE BOTH THE BENEFITS AND THE PENALTIES TO STACK!


BENEFITS:

Major Rager:

  • You temporarily gain the ability to Rage once if you don't already have it for the duration. If you did not have Rage damage before consuming this stick, your Rage damage is considered equal to that of a level 1 Barbarian.

  • You also gain a +1 to your already existing Rage damage (this applies to Rage gained by this stick if you did not originally have the ability to rage).

PENALTIES:

  • At the end of the stick's duration or after the use of Rage ends (which ever comes first), you take 1 point of exhaustion.

  • If you did not have the ability to Rage before the consumption of this stick, you instead take 2 points of exhaustion.

Zen

These sticks are pale green. When lit, the tip sparkles gold and dark green smoke can be exhaled. Tastes like matcha!


BENEFITS:

Inner Peace:

  • You immediately are under the effects of Calm Emotions for the next 10 minutes.

Tranquility:

  • You gain 3 charges of the spell Guidance. These charges can be used at any time during the 1 hour duration of this stick. All unused charges fade at the end of the stick's duration.

PENALTIES:

  • At the end of the stick's duration, make a Wisdom saving throw (DC 15).

    • On a fail, you are under the effects of Hold Person for the next 1d6 minutes.

    • On a success, you are instead under the effects of Hold Person for the next minute.
