Prodigy

Prodigies are those who are born naturally gifted in body and mind. Whether through sheer luck or perhaps chosen by Fate itself, these rare Exemplar of their species are capable of great feats and of learning more rapidly than others. Prodigies often feel the need to put their gift to some kind of grand use: Some do so in search of their own fortune, while other shoulder more noble causes out of genuine empathy, or even crass glory seeking. Whatever their goal, the prodigy is more likely to accomplish it while taking on the exciting lives of the independant adventurer.

While their talent would allow them to find success in any well-regarded profession of their choosing, a prodigy will quickly grow bored without new challenges and simply move on to another pursuit or career. Going off into the wider world, and partaking in the life of an adventurer, allows them to pursue the challenges and thrills they seek; and their magnetic personality help them attract many companions who, while they may lack the breath of the prodigy's skills, are often incredible masters in their own field that the prodigy might thus learn from.

Creating a Prodigy

(Blah blah blah, stuff nobody ever reads about making the character your own.)

Quick Build

You can make a prodigy quickly by following these suggestions. First, make Strength or Dexterity your highest ability score, depending on whether you want to focus on melee weapons or on archery (or finesse weapons). Your next-highest score should be Constitution, to make your hardy, and your next highest ability score after that should be one that will affect your chosen skills the most. Second, choose the folk hero background.

Hit Points

  • Hit Dice: 1d12 per prodigy level
  • Hit Points at 1st Level: 12 + your Constitution modifier
  • Hit Points at Higher Levels: 1d12 (or 7) + your Constitution modifier per Prodigy level after 1st

Proficiencies

  • Armor: All armor, shields
  • Weapons: Simple weapons, martial weapons
  • Tools: 2 of your choice
  • Saving Throws: Constitution, Charisma
  • Skills: 3 of your choice

Equipment

You start with the following equipment, in addition to the equipment granted by your background:

  • (a) chain mail or (b) leather armor, longbow and 20 arrows
  • (a) a martial weapon and a shield or (b) two martial weapons
  • (a) a light crossbow and 20 bolts or (b) 5 javelins
  • (a) a dungeoneer's pack or (b) an explorer's pack or *(c) a diplomat's pack
  • A tool or musical instrument you are proficient with

Class Features

As a prodigy, you gain the following class features which are summarized in the Prodigy table

Prodigious Talent

1st-level prodigy feature

You begin to manifest a natural talent for certain aspects of the adventuring life, and these talents continue to multiply as your career goes on. When you gain this feature at 1st level, and again at 6th, 10th, 13th and 17th level, select one of the following talent. You cannot select the same talent twice.

Talent of Inspiration: Any ally that can see and hear you within 15 feet of you that makes a saving throw can roll a d4 and add the number rolled to the saving throw.

Talent of Magic: You learn the Light and Mage Hand cantrip. You learn one cantrip of your choice amongst Fire Bolt, Ray of Frost, Sacred Flame or Shocking Grasp. You learn 2 level 1 Ritual Spell from the Wizard's spell list, but you can only cast them as rituals. Intelligence is your spellcasting ability for those spells.

Talent of Might: You gain a +1 bonus to all damage rolls made with weapons or unarmed strikes. Your unarmed strikes can deal bludgeoning damage equal to 1d6 + your Strength modifier. Your weapon attacks score a critical hit on a roll of 19 or 20.

Talent of Resilience: You gain a +1 bonus to AC. When you gain this feature your hit points maximum increases by 2, and you gain a further additional 2 HP whenever you gain a level in this class. You need to fail four death saves instead of 3 to die.

Talent of Skill: When you gain this feature, select 3 additional skill proficiencies and 2 additional tool proficiencies. Your proficiency bonus increases by 2 for any ability check you make that uses any of your skill or tool proficincies.

Talent of Speed: Your speed increases by 15 feet. You gain a swim speed and a climb speed equal to your speed. You apply your proficiency bonus to your Initiative rolls. Whenever you use the Dash action, you also gain the benefit of the Dodge action.

Talent of Defense

2nd-level prodigy feature Facing the perils of the adventurer life for only a short time was enough for you to learn how to protect yourself better. You gain proficiency in a saving throw of your choice and the associated attribute improves by 1 point.

Natural Improvement

3rd-level prodigy feature Your natural abilities improve naturally through the course of your adventures, without you needing to make any conscious effort. When you gain this feature at 3rd level, and again at 7th, 10th, 15th and 18th level, your lowest ability score increases by 1. If two of your ability scores are tied for the lowest, you choose which one to improve.

Ability Score Improvement

4th-level prodigy feature When you reach 4th level, and again at 6th, 8th, 11th, 14th, 16th, and 19th level, you can increase one ability score of your choice by 2, or you can increase two ability scores of your choice by 1. As normal, you can’t increase an ability score above 20 using this feature.

Extra Attack

5th-level prodigy feature Beginning at 5th level, you can attack twice, instead of once, whenever you take the Attack action on your turn.

The number of attacks increases to three when you reach 12th level in this class.

Prodigious Resistence

9th-level prodigy feature You have taken your share of punishment as you continue to adventure and face foes. Your body naturally adapts and grow stronger. You are now proficient in all saving throws. If you roll a 1 while making a saving throw you can roll the dice again, but must use the second result.

Apex Abilities

20th-level prodigy feature

You truly are an incredible specimen. At this point in your career you have become the kind of being spoken about in myths and legends, a figure that will impact the imagination of generations to come, regardless if your legacy is one of glory or one of infamy. When you gain this feature at 20th level, all your ability scores increase by 2. You can increase an ability score above 20 using this feature.
