You draw upon your fortune and magic, calling forth
an arcane playing card and hurling it toward a creature
in range. Make a ranged spell attack against the target.
On a hit, it takes 1d8 damage. If the hit is a critical hit,
the target instead takes 1d12 damage.

Each time you cast this spell, roll a d6 and consult
the table below to determine its damage type.

The spell's damage increases by one die when you
reach 5th Level (2d8 or 2d12), 11th level (3d8 or 3d12), and 17th level (4d8 or 4d12).

If you want to minimise the amount of rolling and increase the spell's consistency, you can instead roll for its damage type at the end of each short or long rest, and have it maintain that damage type until your next short or long rest.
