Primal Path - Path of the Demon

Few beings are more filled with rage and anger than demons, and some barbarians are keenly aware of this. Whether through a pact, a bloodline, or simply an inherent calling, some barbarians learn to channel the fury of a demon to tear their foes asunder with massive claws, charging across the battlefield with abyssal might and branding their foes - ensuring that no matter how far they run, they will always be found.

Demonic Rage

Demons are creatures of pure emotion, and by taking this path at 3rd level you gain the ability to channel that rage. When you use your Rage feature, you also gain the following benefits:

  • Your reach increases by 5 feet, and if you are smaller than Large, you become Large, along with anything you are wearing. If there isn’t enough room for you to become Large, your size doesn’t change.
  • Your hands grow into claws, which are natural weapons you can use in place of your unarmed strike. They deal 1d8 slashing damage on a successful hit.
  • Whenever you deal damage with your claws you gain temporary hit points equal to your Rage damage.

In addition, you can burn through your own life to activate your Rage. If you have no uses of Rage remaining, you can instead expend a hit dice, reducing your current and maximum hit points by one roll of your hit dice to activate Rage. This reduction lasts until you complete a long rest, or can be cured by use of a Lesser Restoration spell.

Knowledge of the Abyss

When you choose this path at 3rd level you learn the Abyssal language, if you didn't already have it. You also gain Proficiency in the Religion skill. When using this skill for any purpose relating to demons you have advantage on the ability check.

Demonic Charge

Demons move across the battlefield, slipping into and out of hell at a moment's notice. From 6th level once per turn you can expend your movement in 5ft increments to teleport that distance to a point you can see. Creatures within a 5ft radius of your destination take 1d12 fire damage.

Profane Strike

From 6th level your claws deal magical damage for the purpose of damage resistance and immunity. In addition, if you are not wearing a Shield, you gain +2 to your armour class.

Demonic Resilience

Pure strength can do incredible things, and demons can channel that power to protect themselves. From 10th level you can use your Strength modifier instead of your Wisdom modifier for Wisdom saving throws. While you are raging, you can also add your rage damage bonus to these rolls and any other saves you are proficient in.

Demonic Brand

Demons can mark their prey, allowing them to track and follow it no matter where it goes. From 10th level when you touch a creature, either with a claw attack or simply skin to skin contact, you can choose to apply a brand to them, which appears as a visible demonic symbol on their skin. This hurts the target when applied, but does not cause any hit point damage. While they bear your brand, you know where they are, even if they are on another plane. They also cannot Hide from you.

The brand lasts for a number of weeks equal to your barbarian level, and can be removed early with a dispel magic or greater restoration spell. You may only one brand one target at a time. Branding another target removes the brand from your previous target.

At 20th level, as an action, you can teleport adjacent to your branded target. You must complete a long rest before being able to do this again.

Rage Unbound

Your rage is so potent, so absolute, that it can no longer be contained in your body. From 14th level while raging, at the end of each of your turns you deal 2d12 fire damage to all creatures within 15ft of you.

Consume Fear

Demons feed on the fear of others, but instead of using this to harm, you can use it to aid your allies. From 14th level, if you can see a creature that is Frightened you can use your bonus action to end the Frightened condition on them, consuming it into yourself. You then gain your choice of either another use of Rage or temporary hit points equal to your barbarian level.

Abyssal Flames

From 20th level, while raging all fire damage you deal ignores fire resistance and immunity, damaging a creature as normal. You may also choose for your claws to deal Fire damage, instead of Slashing.
