Animal Companions

3rd level beastmaster feature


At 3rd level, you gain multiple beast companions that help you and are trained to fight alongside you.You have a maximum number of beast companions equal to your proficiency bonus. Each of your beast companions must have a challenge rating of ⅛ or lower, which increases to ¼ when you reach level 11 in this class, and ½ when you reach 15th level in this class.

The beasts obey your commands as best as they can.Your beast companions act, in initiative, immediately after your turn. You can use your bonus action to mentally command each of them take the Attack, Dash, Disengage, or Help action. If you don't issue a command, the beasts take the Dodge action. Each of their hit point maximums equals the hit point number in its stat block or two times your ranger level, whichever is higher. Your beast companions can spend Hit Dice during a short rest to regain hit points.

If you are incapacitated or absent, the beasts act on their own, focusing on protecting you and themselves. If any of the beasts die, you can obtain a new companion by spending 8 hours magically bonding with a beast that isn’t hostile to you and that meets the requirements.

Beast Speech

3rd level beastmaster feature


You can communicate telepathically with beasts within 120 feet of you, that you can see. You do not need to share a language with them, and there is no intelligence requirement.

Natural Harmony

7th level beastmaster feature


At 7th level you become proficient in animal handling, if you weren’t already. Additionally, beasts of a certain challenge rating, or lower, are indifferent to you and your allies, unless provoked. The challenge rating increases as you level up, as shown in the table below.

Pack Tactics

11th level beastmaster feature


You and your animal companions have advantage on attack rolls against a creature if at least one of your allies is within 5 feet of the creature and the ally isn't incapacitated.

Evasion

15th level beastmaster feature


You and your animal companions can nimbly dodge out of the way of certain area effects, such as an ancient red dragon’s fiery breath. When you are subjected to an effect that allows you to make a Dexterity saving throw to take only half damage, you instead take no damage if you succeed on the saving throw, and only half damage if you fail.
