Introduction and Description

Long ago, before even the fall of Netheril, the Imaskar Empire ruled the unapproachable east. So mighty were they that they reached into other, less civilized worlds to abduct slaves. They were a magic people, who venerated spellcraft above all other things, and considered themselves above even the gods.

Their arrogance would be their undoing. They created many monstrosities as part of their magical experimentation, including their doom- the magic-eating phaerimm. These unnatural, magic-devouring creatures turned on their masters, bringing their magic empire crashing down, much like they would later do to the Netherese. With their spells failing and their kingdom turning into a desert wasteland, the abducted slaves rebelled with their superior physical might, driving the Imaskari underground.

Isolated from the surface in the deepest pits of the Lowerdark, the kingdom of Deep Imaskar continued to exist into present day, though their greatest magic was long forgotten. To preserve their way of life and ward off retribution from the peoples they once dominated, their empire was sealed from all entry and divination.

Now that seal has been broken, and a few Deep Imaskari venture forth into the world to re-establish contact with other races they have long neglected, and find a place for themselves outside of the bounds of their ancient exile. Those who leave forfeit all knowledge of their home's location in order to protect it, and will most likely never return.

Deep Imaskari are very human-like in appearance, though they're somewhat larger on average, and have marble-like skin, a remnant of an ancient spell cast upon their entire race to protect them from being found. It still feels soft to the touch. They tend towards being tall and slender.

Personality and Outlook

To the Imaskari, magic is everything. Their society is built around discovering and utilizing new magical lore, and only the most talented mages rule. Even after thousands of years they have still not regained their former greatness, and their isolation from all other races and events has not helped in this regard.

Those who leave their home do so out of a curiosity for the outside world, and wish to learn as much as possible- including the newest discoveries in magecraft. Every being a Deep Imaskari meets might be the first of that race they have ever interacted with, and they're eager to learn the lay of the land to understand where their people will fit into it.

This is not to say that they're friendly. They view everything with suspicion, being so far out of their element, and must keep their people's ways and progress secret from all others. They do not lie about their origin, but if pressed for details of their city by any but their closest friends their lips are tight.

Society and Culture

Deep Imaskar is an exiled and fearful land. They remember how the world revolted against them and do everything in their power to avoid a crusade to put an end to their race.

Their society is a magocracy, descended from the ancient wizard kings who once ruled a large part of the world. They constantly experiment with magic to outdo their rivals with discoveries and accomplishments, and are not averse to any possible disastrous consequences of their magical inquiries.

Religion and Deities

In the time of the Empire, the Imaskari considered themselves above even the gods because of their magical might. Millenia of isolation has allowed their society to change somewhat on this front, and Imaskari tend to venerate the most ancient and powerful of gods. This worship is minor and some might say token, enough to keep them from being Faithless. There are almost no priests or clerics in Imaskari society, as they're more devoted to the arcane.

Relations with Other Races

Because so few Imaskari have ever left their underground kingdom, there's little pre-existing bias or friendship for them. Those who know history will view the descendants of such an evil empire with suspicion, but their lack of presence in the outside world means each Imaskari is likely to have a unique experience. It could be said that the relations of individuals ARE the relations of the race.

NWN Creation

Deep Imaskari have a base race of Human. They must be created as a Human and select the Deep Imaskari subrace during character creation upon first logging in. At time of publishing, playing a Deep Imaskari requires a Greater Award, which can be acquired through Epic Sacrifice.
