The Moonlit Queen

The Fallen Fey

Stories of the Moonlit Queen are told in hushed whispers to future rulers, a cautionary tale on ambition and greed. Queens would tell their sons (and ambitious daughters) of an ancient and powerful Queen of fairies who ruled in her moonlit realm, far above the lands of mortals. Her strength and power were indescribable, often boasting that her domain stretched to every inch of the world bathed in moonlight. But, her power was her downfall, felled in her attempt of reaching godhood.

Remnants of Apotheosis

Jealous of the gods that claimed domain over the moon, the Moonlit Queen waged a failed war against them in the hopes that she would become the only god over the Moon. Holy warriors fought their way through the Moonlit court, eventually capturing the Queen. The gods however quickly realised that her power had grown to influence not only the moon in the Feywild, but had seeped to each and every moon. Her existence was entwined with these celestial entities, and she could not truly be killed while they existed. Shattering every moon would also mean shattering the power of these lunar gods. Not fond of that solution, the Lunar Gods chose to forever imprison the Queen. Shackled in cold iron links, they were transmuted with celestial steel into a huge Greatsword. This mighty blade that housed the essence of the Queen was then shattered, it's pieces sent hurtling down deep underground. There, she would spend eternity trapped under dirt, never being able to cherish the moon again.

The Shattered Sword

The Moonlit Queen is now as much a sword as an archfey or a ruler, her existence forever entwined within her steel prison. Some may not even make the distinction between a sentient weapon and the Moonlit Queen, arguing that she has been steel longer than flesh. Thus, a warlock that makes a pact with the Moonlit Queen is similar to Warlocks of the Hexblade patron, as they both make a pact with an entity made weapon. It is nevertheless inevitable that the Queen's being is suffused with the sword, to the extent that they are one. With the sword shattered, each shard might contain an element of her personality. One shard may carry her wrath, while the other her love.

Dreams of the Lunar

Though she has all but given up in her aim of returning to her former self, the Moonlit Queen’s ultimate goal is to walk the surface of the moon once more. This is a path of godly proportion. Even if pieces of her sword might reforge themselves together when in their presence, extracting herself from her steel prison is another feat entirely. And even then, she would have to contend with the Lunar gods that she warred with eons ago, unlikely that they would ignore the return of their most contentious foe. Yet, the Moonlit Queen expects her warlocks to one day deliver her this prize, for their pact would not be complete until she walks along the surface of the Moon once again.

Otherworldly Patron:

The Moonlit Queen

You have made a pact with the once Queen of the moonlit court, a being as aloof and detached as the moon. Encased in a celestial Greatsword of cold iron for her failed apotheosis, the sword shattered, each of its parts scattered deep underground. Now, she seeks to be whole once more, and to one night walk among the surface of the moon again.

Expanded spell list

The Moonlit Queen lets you choose from an expanded list of spells when you learn a warlock spell. The following spells are added to the warlock spell list for you.

Moonlit Queen Expanded Spells
Spell level Spells
1st sleep, wrathful smite
2nd branding smite, moonbeam
3rd blink, elemental weapon
4th phantasmal killer, greater invisibility
5th cone of cold, dominate person

Queensguard

At 1st level, you acquire the training necessary to emulate the once hundred strong Queensguard. You gain proficiency with medium armor, short swords, rapiers, longswords, greatswords, glaives and longbows.

The influence of your patron also allows you to mystically channel your will through a particular weapon. Whenever you finish a long rest, you can touch one weapon that you are proficient with through this feature. When you attack with that weapon, you can use your Charisma modifier, instead of Strength or Dexterity, for the attack and damage rolls. This benefit lasts until you finish a long rest.

If you later gain the Pact of the Blade feature, this benefit extends to every pact weapon you conjure with that feature, no matter the weapon’s type.

Bathed in moonlight

Also at 1st level, you can sear your enemies with the wrathful shine of the Queen's moonlight. When you hit a creature with an attack, you can use your reaction to deal additional radiant damage to the creature. This bonus damage equals 1d6+ half your warlock level. Additionally, the creature sheds dim light up to 5 feet until the end of your next turn.

You can use this feature twice. You regain all expended uses after a short rest.

Furthermore, whenever you cause light to be shed by a feature or a spell of 1st level or higher, you can choose it to be moonlight for the purposes of your features.

Cloak of moonlight

At 6th level, you can wield moonlight to shed the disguises of others, or to conceal yourself in it. A creature cannot benefit from invisibility until the end of their next turn when you deal radiant damage from them and must immediately shifts back to its original form if it is a shapeshifter. Additionally, when you deal radiant damage you can become invisible until the start of your next turn.

You can turn invisible this way once. You regain use of this feature after a short rest.

Interposing light

At 10th level, you can emit blinding light against your enemies, foiling their attacks. When a creature hits you with an attack roll, you can use your reaction to roll a d6 if the creature or you are in moonlight. On a 4 or higher, the attack instead misses you, regardless of its roll. A creature is immune to this effect if it does not rely on vision.

Moonlit Night

At 14th level, the night itself bows to your Queen’s might. You gain resistance to radiant and cold damage. Furthermore, you can use your action to blanket the area within a 50 feet radius of you in magical darkness, which remains for one minute. When you do so, select an amount of creatures up to twice your charisma modifier. You and these selected creatures can see through this magical darkness.

When you use your action this way, you cannot do so again until after a long rest.

Variant features

These features are here to offer a more unique patron, one free from the pseudo-hexblade theme.

Curse of Moonlight

At 1st level, you can use your bonus action to wreath a creature within 60 feet of you with pale moonlight. To you, this creature is under the effects of the faerie fire spell. This effect lasts for an amount of rounds equal to your charisma modifier. At the end of each of their turns, the creature can make a dexterity saving throw, ending the effect on a success.

You can use this feature once. You regain use of this feature after a short rest.

Dreamreaver

At 10th level, the unconscious mind becomes a weapon and a tool for you, as the shine of moonlight illuminating upon the sleeping is at your call. When you touch a dreaming creature, you can learn of it's dream. You can also try to manipulate the dreams, and as an action you can force the creature to make a wisdom saving throw. If they fail, you can freely manipulate that dream as a part of the action, influencing the dream until the creature wakes up.

Additionally, you can assault the mind with these reveary forces. When a creature fails a wisdom or intelligence saving throw against a spell that you cast, you can flood their mind with nightmarish thoughts. The creature is frightened of you and one other creature of your choice within 10 feet of the creature, until the end of your next turn.

Curse of the Queen

Some elves or eladrin that cross one of the shattered pieces of the Queen that do not come to her aid may be cursed with her wrath. Though her bonds do not allow the Queen to outright kill or injure the creature, they can be infected with the great aloofness of the moon. Elves may have their subrace changed to Eladrin by this curse. Eladrin may select a fifth subtype, known as the season of moon.

Moon Eladrin are afflicted by the same abject aloofness as the unreachable moon in the night sky, taken by detached solitude.
