Aarakocra Subraces

Two subraces of aarakocra are found among the worlds of D&D: alpine aarakocra and owlakokra. Choose one of these subraces.

Alpine Aarkocra

The aarakocra in the Elemental Evil: Player's Companion are alpine aarakocra.

Alpine Aarakocra Traits

SIZE. Alpine aarakocra are size large when they spread their wingAlpine, taking up 10 feet of space. If you don't move while flying, you descend 10 feet.

SUMMONING AIR ELEMENTALS. Five alpine aarakocra within 30 feet of each other can magically summon an air elemental. Each of the five must use its action and movement on three consecutive turns to perform an aerial dance and must maintain concentration while doing so (as if concentrating on a spell).

When all five have finished their third turn of the dance, the elemental appears in an unoccupied space within 60 feet of them. It is friendly toward them and obeys their spoken commands. It remains for 1 hour, until it or all its summoners die, or until any of its summoners dismisses it as a bonus action. A summoner can't perform the dance again until it finishes a short rest.

Owlakocra

This rarer subclass of owlakocra have owl-like features and have evolved to live more in touch with other creatures on the ground. They build nests in tall trees in great fotrests when possible. They have long ago severed ties with the Elemental Plane of Air and adopted the prime material plane as their home.

In physical appearance, arborial aarakocra of both sexes have flatter faces with larger eyes and more earth-toned or snow-white feathers, usually browns and tans, blacks and grays, or all white. Their wingspan is smaller, 10' making them size large when flying.

Arborials usually don't fly over 30 feet above the ground. They better understand the idea of ownership, better cope with confinement, and have less hatred toward gargoyles.
