Arauthorod donnar

a whisper on many a lip of dwarvenkind. A wondrous creation to some, wistfully thinking of better times of old, where the earth was limitless and full of wonder. A lost relic of centuries ago to others, where the innocence and greed of dwarves showed it's ugly head, where bartering with dragons for help making weapons seemed to be an insult to dwarf smithing. To some, it is an ungodly insult to the horrors that it led to.

It began with the forge, and ended in the mountains.

The Hilt

On observation of this item it seems to be an intricate blade metal hilt of dwarvern design with intricate runes across the crossguard. Upon touching the grip you can feel a magical connection between you and the weapon itself

The Blade

After attunement, The hilt can manipulate water and can turn it to ice which can be slippery or not (wielder's choice).

When this weapon is drawn, it takes the very moisture from the air that it has collected or nearby water sources and freezes it into razor sharp ice magically bound together which can vary in size and shape depending on the wielder's desire.

Magical Weapon: This weapon is treated as a +2 magical weapon.

Blade of Ice: Upon a successful hit, this weapon does an extra 1d6 cold damage

Ice Spear: Once per long rest, you can point the hilt forwards and utter it's command word and send a razor sharp trail of ice through the air into a chosen target. The frozen 'spear' of ice pierces through a line 30 feet long by 5 feet wide ending at a point in range that you can see. Each creature in this line must make a Dexterity saving throw. A creature takes 6d8 cold damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.

Ray of Frost: This hilt allows you to cast the Ray of Frost cantrip spell at will, using the user's spellcasting modifier to hit.

Weapon shapes

When the hilt is held with the intention of combat, it can shape into a variety of weapons. These include:

  • Longsword
  • Shortsword
  • Scimitar
  • Rapier
  • Battleaxe
  • War Pick
  • Warhammer
  • Morningstar
  • Lance
  • Greatsword

Dwarves and Dragons

This weapon is steeped in dwarven history, it was held by ancient mountain dwarf Thanes in their conquests throughout the northern mountains, claiming all the lands as their own, to explore and delve deep to find all the rare materials they could. This led to many conflicts between the dwarves above ground and the Duergar.

The Duergar hold this weapon and others like it solely responsible for their banishment to the Underdark and their subsequent enslavement to the Illithid.

Duergar hatred: If a Duergar sees this weapon, the Duergar must pass a DC 15 Wisdom check or he will be compelled to attack the wielder out of ancient rage towards this weapon or to attempt to steal it for himself.

The Price of Failure

All dragons (even the good ones) are fickle creatures that can turn from a benevolent friend into a hostile being in an instant. When this blade was created, some of this nature was embedded into the weapon (albeit very mildly)

Shatter: If the user rolls a 1 to hit to attack or to hit with Ray of Frost, roll a 1d4. If this result is also a 1, the ice around the air shatters and all creatures within 5 ft (incuding the wielder) take 1d8+4 cold damage and must pass a strength DC 15 or be knocked prone. The user must also spend an action to reactivate the blade.
