Storm Swords

Legendary Item (Legacy), requires attunement

Two matched shortswords of unmistakable quality, while strikingly different in appearance they are obviously made for each other. Short, heavy-set, and deeply curved these blades stand out from traditional blades. Forged together in some magical scenario... perhaps the heart of a volcano or in the instant of a bolt of lightning, few adventurer's have seen their equal.

History

A long time ago, there was a sailor known across the realm. Said to have the blessing of the god of the sea herself, he seemed to never lose course or face hardships on the open water. Sailors and commoners flocked to the reputed captain, seeking advice or safe travel. Little did he know, the god shining upon him was not the goddess of the sea but instead the storms.

Within the captain, great potential had been seen. That potential had to be tested. While his histoy had been free of trouble the captain soon found himself waylaid by storms every time he left port. Even still, the ship never lost course and the captain never feared failure. He was as much reliant on his ship as his ship and crew were reliant on him. Even still, he never felt worried for the bond his crew carried was built on absolute trust and he fostered it every voyage. This resolute spirit resonated with the goddess of storms. and she deemed him fit to talk to her directly. When he did, he was overcome with emotion. Not only reverance but gratitude and thankfulness that she had looked after him all these years.

Basic Enchantments

For a character 4th level or lower, the weapons are each a +1 shortsword with typical statistics. For characters above 4th level, the white sword does an extra 1d4 lightning damage and the black sword does an extra 1d4 thunder damage.

Legacy Properties

When wielded by a character of 6th level or higher the Storm Swords gain additional properties, you must be attuned to the weapons to utilize these features but attuning to both the swords only takes one attunement slot.

Elemental Attunement

At sixth level, the elemental damage of the swords increases from 1d4 to 1d6 if both swords are wielded together.

Legacy Tier 1 - Storm's Protection

When the swords are together you may harness their innate connection to the weather and storms. The swords have 4 charges. While attuned to the swords, 2 charges can be expended to cast Warding Wind from the swords. You do not need to make concentration checks for the purpose of maintaining this spell. It takes a bonus action to strike the swords against one another and start the winds. It does not take an action to end the storm. These charges regenerate on a long rest.

Legacy Tier 2 - Elemental Shield

Prerequisites: Level 10 and the wielder must voluntarily take more than 40 lightning or thunder damage.

While attuned to these weapons, as a reaction you may expend one charge from the swords to gain resistance to the respective damage types for 1 round. If struck by either of these damage types, the next time a sword hits an enemy double the number of elemental damage dice.

Legacy Tier 3 - Storm's Fury

Prerequisites: Level 12 and swords must be used to strike the killing blow versus an elemental of CR 5 or higher

The shortswords now function as +2 shortswords

The Warding Wind spell from the swords turns into a sea storm. Enemies who enter the area of the storm or start their turn there must make a DC 15 Constitution saving throw. On a failed save, enemies take 2d8 lightning damage. On a successful save, they take no damage.

Legacy Tier 4 - Eye of the Storm

Prerequisites: Level 16 and the wielder must sail directly into a raging sea storm and survive

The shortswords now function as +3 shortswords

The lightning damage from Storm's Fury increases to 5d8 lightning damage. Successful saves now also cause the enemy to take half damage instead of no damage.

Elemental Attunement

Those who seek to empower the elemental abilities of the swords must confront the true power of the forces they wish to wield.

Bonded Path
