# Spelljammer Officer Actions Spelljammer Academy, the free adventure for Dungeons & Dragons 5th edition suggests the use of crew roles, but provides no rules on how to use them. This simple addition is intended to give them some functionality before the release of the full book where it'll probably be given proper rules. I did take this from a post on [r/spelljammer](https://www.reddit.com/r/spelljammer/comments/w3onp8/missing_rules_for_spelljammer_academy_02_trial_by/) by [u/GrunzerPrime](https://www.reddit.com/user/GrunzerPrime/), they came up with basically everything here, I only made some minor revisions and primarily fixed up the wording to be more in line with 5e terminology, as well as doing this formatting using [homebrewery](https://homebrewery.naturalcrit.com/). Still in dire need of testing and additions, this homebrew isn't complete, but I hope it will be remembered and used if the offical rules leaves something to be desired once they're released. Without a crew, a ship can't use most of its weapons, can't be properly repaired, and is honestly just kind of lonely. Using this rule, the crew you bring won't be so stagnant, they can improve as well. As a base, a crew has 3 stats, Health, Ability, and Tier. Health represents how much crew is healthy enough to participate and man the ship, it can be restored by spending time with access to proper amenities. Ability determines how useful they are, this score is the crew equivalent of Strength or Dexterity etc. all combined into one stat. It affects their attack bonus among other things. The Tier of the Crew determines its other stats as follows; There are 4 Tiers of Crew, equating to the 4 tiers of D&D play. Tier 1 Crew has 50 hp and an Ability of +3. Tier 2 Crew has 100 hp and an Ability of +4. Tier 3 Crew has 200 hp and an Ability of +5. Tier 4 Crew has 300 hp and an Ability of +6. In combat, roll initiative for the crew, no modifier applied. On their turn, they fire one of the ship's mounted weapons using their Ability to hit, assuming there is a weapon that has not yet been fired this round. The DM may determine they can take another shipmate action in combat instead, using their ability bonus for the check.

### Spelljammer Actions A Spelljammer is a spellcaster who uses their magic to propel and steer the spelljamming vessel. Without a Spelljammer attuned to the helm of the spelljamming ship, it cannot move. Therefore, the Spelljammer role is the most important role on a spelljammer, and is to be protected at all costs. During their turn, instead of taking a normal action or bonus action in combat, a character with the Spelljammer role can take one of the following special actions while seated in an attuned spelljammer helm. ##### Action 1: Fast Forward! You will the ship to advance forward. Make an ability check using your spellcasting modifier and compare the total below. Then move up to the ship's speed, with one 45-degree turn. • **7 or below:** The ship's movement speed is reduced by 20 this turn. • **8-16:** The ship moves forward as normal. • **17 or higher:** The ship's movement speed is increased by 20 this turn. ##### Action 2: Backwards! You dictate the ship to retract backwards. Make an ability check using your spellcasting modifier and compare the total below. Then move up to half the ship's speed backwards, with one 45-degree turn. • **11 or below:** The ship's movement speed is halved this turn. • **12-19:** The ship moves backwards as normal. • **20 or higher:** The ship's movement speed is doubled this turn. ##### Bonus Action 1: Evade! Expend a spell slot to infuse the ship with your magic, allowing it to move faster, focusing on evading incoming onslaughts. Until the start of your next turn, any attack roll made against the ship or its components has disadvantage unless the attacker is aboard the ship, and it makes Dexterity saving throws with advantage. ##### Bonus Action 2: Bolt! Expend a spell slot to infuse the ship with your magic, allowing it to move faster, focusing on quickly getting closer or further from your enemies. The ship can move an extra number of feet this round equal to 40 plus 40 times the level of the spell slot expended, to a maximum of 200 extra feet. \page

OFFICER ACTIONS

### Captain Special Actions Trusted to be intuitive, sensible, fair-minded, and decisive, the Captain role is a good fit for someone with a high Wisdom or Charisma. A Captain is expected to give orders to other crew members (who, in turn, are expected to follow those orders). During their turn, instead of taking a normal action in combat, a character with the Captain role can take one of the following special actions while aboard a friendly spelljammer. ##### Action 1: Move, Landlubbers! Order the other crew members to make them work harder. Make a Charisma (Persuasion) or Wisdom (Insight) check and compare the total below. • **9 or below:** There is no effect and the action is wasted. • **10-14:** One skill check or ship weapon attack selected by the captain gets advantage this round. • **15-19:** One skill check or ship weapon attack selected by the captain gets advantage and a bonus equal to the captains proficiency bonus this round. • **20 or higher:** Two skill checks or ship weapon attacks selected by the captain get advantage and a bonus equal to the captains proficiency bonus this round. ##### Action 2: C’mon! Fire these weapons! Command the crew of up to two shipboard armaments to aim and fire them immediately. Make a weapon attack with these mounted weapons, using the crew's attack bonus. Each weapon can fire only once per round unless otherwise specified. ##### Action 3: Brace for Impact! Prepare your crew and ship against a sudden impact, whether ramming, being rammed, or from something else. Make a Charisma (Persuasion) or Wisdom (Perception) check and compare the total below. • **12 or below:** There is no effect and the action is wasted. • **13-22:** Your ship has resistance to the next source of damage from crashing or any Ram attack and your crew has advantage against being knocked prone until the start of your next turn. • **23 or higher:** Your ship has immunity to the next source of damage from crashing or any Ram attack and your crew has advantage against being knocked prone until the start of your next turn.

### Shipmate Actions The shipmates take on the duties of maintaining and operating the ship and its weaponry. A shipmate is expected to listen to the Captain's commands, but also to think for themselves on what is best. During their turn, instead of taking a normal action in combat, a character with the Shipmate or Captain role can take one of the following special actions to operate a friendly spelljammer. ##### Action 1: Fire at will! Help the crew of a shipboard armament to aim and fire it. Make a weapon attack with a mounted weapon, using your Dexterity or Intelligence modifier to hit, adding your proficiency bonus if applicable. Each weapon can fire only once per round unless otherwise specified. ##### Action 2: Ready about! Prepare the ship's rigging for sharper maneuvering. Make a Strength (Athletics) or Dexterity (Acrobatics) check and compare the total below. • **9 or below:** There is no effect and the action is wasted. • **10-14:** The ship can turn an additional 45 degrees during its movement this round. • **15-19:** The ship can turn an additional 90 degrees during its movement this round. • **20 or higher:** The ship can move an extra 20 feet and turn an additional 90 degrees during its movement this round. ##### Action 3: Emergency Repairs! Make some quick fix-ups to the ship, keeping it from falling apart in battle. Make a Strength or Dexterity ability check, adding your proficiency bonus if you're proficient in a relevant tool (e.g. carpenter's tools, smith's tools, tinker's tools) and compare the total below. • **12 or below:** There is no effect and the action is wasted. • **13-17:** The ship or one of its components of your choice gains temporary hit points equal to 1d10 plus your proficiency bonus. • **18-22:** The ship or one of its components of your choice gains temporary hit points equal to 2d10 plus your proficiency bonus. • **23 or higher:** The ship or one of its components of your choice gains temporary hit points equal to 20 plus your proficiency bonus. *Temporary hit points gained in this way are removed at the end of combat and this action can not be taken while not in combat.* \page

SHIPBOARD ARMAMENTS

# [WIP] Shipboard Armaments The vast majority of ships in the dangerous expanse of wildspace are outfitted with weaponry capable of fending off massive creatures as well as other ships. Because they are designed for large-scale combat, shipboard weapons are typically unfit for attacking smaller and more mobile targets. Attack rolls against a Large or smaller creature are made at disadvantage and the target can make a Dexterity saving throw to take no damage, the DC equals 5 + the *to hit* bonus of the attack. Here are some examples of commonly used mounted weapons and their variations, for use on both player and enemy ship. >#### Important Notice These have obviously not been balanced against each other yet, some are simply stronger than others. Still working on that. ### Ballistae A ballista is essentially a huge crossbow. Using springs and rope to launch wood or metal bolts. ### Catapults There are many variations of catapulting weaponry, these specifically hurl boulder-like objects in a high arc. They are typically sturdy and reliable, but require a lot of man-power. ### Cannons A cannon uses explosions to propel heavy balls of cast iron through the air at destructive speeds. # Ship Component Upgrades Spelljammer ships are more than just its crew, weapons and hull, almost every ship is unique and it should show. A ship should generally only be able to have one or two of the following at a time, and some upgrades might need a specific ship shape.
