# Welcome to the Dernwilds The Dernwilds has a slowly growing yet deep history within it. Magic, nature, cultures, riches, good, evil, and adventure mottle the very landscape itself in random swatches of vibrant colors. Ancient lores and societies can be found deep within the jungles if one has the courage and endurance to find them.

## History of the Dernwilds The Dernwilds are considered nothing more than a tall tale told to children across the realms or a hypothetical wasteland in theocratic dogma. However, these lands without the gods do exist. Long ago, there used to be many deities that dwelled within the lands of the Dernwilds. However, people began to fear the gods and sought to take their power for themselves, expelling them from the Dernwilds forever via a newfound art, thaumaturgy. Most people would say that the thaumaturges were in the right and that they did good things for all people of all races. As time passed, the public opinion of thaumaturges began to sway as they got more and more involved with government systems and the ruling classes.

The gods are dead, so they say. But some believe that somewhere out there, their powers still do exist. No one has tried to confirm or deny these claims, though—not *yet*, anyhow. ### The City-States of the Dernwilds The lands of the Dernwilds are mostly inhabited by very spread out and rather small groups of people of many races. A few of these groups have grown large enough to become city-states of their own, but in general, most of the land is without a law of any sort. The three city-states—Zammia Tasalui, Talmhí-on-Uirós, and Burishten—are the greatest governmental powers within the land. Each one holds different policies, yet all three are unified by their cultures based within the Dernwilds.

## Life in the Dernwilds ### Currency Minted currency exists in the Dernwilds in the form of specially carved stone tokens called *ploch*. The metal inlays in the stone serve as an identifier for the city-state they are used in, as well as validity in the land. People exchange goods for services both in and out of the city-states via the use of this currency. Certain ploch are held at different values in the lands within and around certain city-states, but most merchants accept currency at a standard rate—the rates in question can be found on the Ploch Conversion table.

The common way to exchange pleasantries with one another in the realm is either by word of mouth or by letter. Those who are of affluent backgrounds or simply have the resources to obtain a special item known as a speakstone can hold a full conversation with a person or group of people provided there is an efficient amount of magical energy given to the item. ### Transportation Many people in the Dernwilds simply travel by foot—in this case, "by foot" has less to do with walking and more to do with traveling via whatever locomotion a person of a specific race is capable of—since living in a landscape that is heavily populated with rainforests makes travel via the aid of an animal such as a horse rather inconvenient. For those living in areas such as the savannah or the desert, travel is often done via the help of an animal such as a camel or an elephant. Some people choose to travel along the water using a boat if they can.

Some people specialize in services that assist in transportation, allowing people to either rent or buy a means of travel such as an animal or a cart to be pulled by an animal. There are also means of travel through the air and water via animal or magical means, as well as teleportation circles for those who can afford them.

# Character Creation This quick guide will walk you through making a character shaped by the culture and society of the Dernwilds. As a refresher, make the following choices in whatever order you see fit:

***Race.*** Choose one of the playable races detailed within this guide and understand how life in the Dernwilds has affected them.

***Class.*** Choose one of the classes available to you within this guide that are unique and specific to the Dernwilds. Some classes have very unique subclasses as well, so feel free to read up about those should you wish.

***Background.*** Select a background for your character from a myriad of distinct choices.

## Races

**Aarakocra** are beautiful birdfolk known for their majestic wings.

**Aransi** are peculiar people noted for their humanoid upper halves and arachnid lower halves. Although they are commonly mistaken for driders in communities outside of the Dernwilds, the aransi are not treated like people afflicted with a curse, choosing to consider their form blessing given to the drow from their formerly extant gods.

**Cernonna** aren't as well known when compared to their centaur cousins and their equestrian builds, but these cervid humanoids are just as proud in the Dernwilds. Their deer-like lower halves may not be considered imposing to some, but no one disrespects the antlers.

**Dwarves** aren't a common sight to see around the rocky areas in the Dernwilds, due to their tendency to build their homes inside the very hills, mountains, and caves that dot the landscape.

**Elves** are common to find in a variety of different environments in the Dernwilds. Being born from nature itself, elves are known to populate the thickest of jungles, sparsest of deserts, and darkest of caves.

**Gnomes** are known for their creativity and ingenuity, working with the resources they can get their hands on to produce the best of the best.

**Grung** are a well-known amphibianfolk in the Dernwilds. They're often found living in the rather wet climates of the land.

**Half-elves** don't deal with the normal stigma people would expect to come from raising a child who is of elven and human heritage, but they do tend to live in human settlements as opposed to elven ones—it's one thing to be part wild and another to be of the wilds themselves, after all.

**Half-orcs**, also known colloquially as orcmen, are often borne as a result of arranged marriage rituals between aristocratic human and orc families within the city-states.

**Hemelings** are a born from the union of celestials and humanity long ago—their golden hair and eyes make them appear blessed, though they are often plagued by conflicting and fleeing visions of their ancestral past.

**Humans** populate many areas of the Dernwilds but tend to live in tight, close-knit communities wherever they go.

**Lizardfolk** can be found in many shapes, sizes, and colors within the lands—the different heritage lines consider themselves separate clans but one people.

**Locathah** often find themselves feeling like fish out of water, but that doesn't stop them from living a life on the land and in the sea.

**Plasmoids** are thought to have come from slime molds, but not much is known about them—you can ask them, they don't seem to know or care either.

**Tabaxi** are catfolk that mainly live in nomadic groups within the Dernwilds, but some are known to eke out a residential life for themselves.

**Tortle** are often found living in the wetlands or the deserts of the Dernwilds. Some prefer to live hermit lifestyles whereas others live with a diverse yet small group of individuals.

**Yuan-ti** are often treated with suspicion, but these snake people are not as shifty as their stereotypes make them out to be.

##### A Note About Racial Feature Changes

Every race you pick within this world follows the following rules when it comes to ability score increases, alignment, and languages:

***Ability Score Increase.*** Instead of basing the ability score increments that you get on the race itself, you can instead choose to either increase one ability score by 2 and another score by 1 or increase three different scores by 1.

***Alignment.*** Whereas other source books make alignment dependent on your race, your character's race has no bearing on their personality—feel free to pick an alignment that best suits their persona.

***Languages.*** Instead of getting languages specific to your race, you automatically know two languages of your choice—this can be your racial language, but it in no way is required to be.

##### Author's Note These changes have been made to reflect some but not all of the racial changes that were made in Tasha's Cauldron of Everything and Monsters of the Multiverse.

Many of the races that you likely know from other sourcebooks related to the game have been altered to fit the gameplay and lore of this campaign setting, so it would be in your best interest to become acquainted with the changed racial features and subracial features. ### Aarakocra Traits

***Age.*** Aarakocra reach maturity by age 3. Compared to humans, aarakocra don’t usually live longer than 30 years.

***Size.*** Aarakocra are about 5 feet tall. They have thin, lightweight bodies that weigh between 80 and 100 pounds. Your size is Medium.

***Speed.*** Your base walking speed is 30 feet.

***Flight.*** You have a flying speed equal to your walking speed. To use this speed, you can’t be wearing medium or heavy armor.

***Talons.*** You are proficient with your unarmed strikes, which deal 1d6 slashing damage on a hit.

***Subrace.*** Your avian features are pronounced in a specific way depending on your heritage. The five major subraces of aarakocra are accipio, aecor, hoatzi, psitta, and strix. Choose a subrace for your aarakocra.

#### Accipio Swift and deadly, these aarakocra take after birds of prey like eagles, hawks, and ospreys. Their swift speed and sharp claws give them intimidating power when they take to the air.

***Natural Athlete.*** You have proficiency in the Athletics skill.

***Charge.*** If you fly at least 30 feet straight toward a target and then hit it with a melee weapon attack on the same turn, you can immediately follow that attack with a bonus action, making one attack against the target with your talons.

#### Aecor Majestic in the water as they are in the air, these aarakocra seem to almost fly through the water when they swim, making them masters of sky and sea.

***Swift Swim.*** You have a swimming speed equal to your walking speed.

***Downy Feathers.*** You have resistance to cold damage.

#### Hoatzi Their folivore lifestyle gives them one hell of a smell, but these aarakocra consider it a mark of pride rather than something to be ashamed of.

***Intimidating Aura.*** You have proficiency in the Intimidation skill.

***Foul Stench.*** As a reaction, you release a foul stench within a 10 foot radius around you to incapacitate your enemies. Creatures caught in the stench must succeed on a DC 12 saving throw or become incapacitated until the end of their next turn. Once you use this feature, you cannot do so again until you complete a long rest.

#### Psitta These colorful aarakocra often surprise others with their colorful plumage and impressive vocal skills.

***Smooth Talker.*** You have proficiency in the Performance skill.

***Mimicry.*** You can mimic sounds you have heard, including voices. A creature that hears the sounds you make can tell they are imitations with a successful Wisdom (Insight) check opposed by your Charisma (Deception) check.

#### Strix These owl-like aarakocra aren't specifically creatures of the night, but their silent feathers make it easier for them to be so.

***Darkvision.*** You can see in dim light within 120 feet of yourself as if it were bright light and in darkness as if it were dim light. You discern colors in that darkness only as shades of gray.

***Silent Feathers.*** You have proficiency in the Stealth skill.

### Aransi Traits ***Age.*** Although aransi reach physical maturity at about the same age as humans, the aransi understanding of adulthood goes beyond physical growth to encompass worldly experience. An aransi typically claims adulthood and an adult name around the age of 100 and can live to be 750 years old.

***Size.*** Aransi range from under 5 to over 6 feet tall, with their arachnid bodies reaching about 4 feet at the waist. Your size is Medium.

***Speed.*** Your base walking speed is 30 feet.

***Fey Ancestry.*** You have advantage on saving throws against being charmed.

***Trance.*** Aransi do not sleep and cannot be put to sleep by magical means. Instead they meditate deeply, remaining semi-conscious, for 4 hours a day. The Common word for this meditation is "trance." While meditating, you dream after a fashion; such dreams are actually mental exercises that have become reflexive after years of practice. After resting in this way, you gain the same benefit a human would from 8 hours of sleep.

***Spider Climb.*** You can move up, down, and across vertical surfaces and upside down along ceilings, without needing to make a check. You also gain a climbing speed equal to your walking speed.

***Web Walker.*** You ignore movement restrictions caused by webbing.

***Subrace.*** Your arachnid form takes shape depending on the god who gave your ancestor their blessed form. The four major subraces of aransi are argyron, labida, saltori, and taranta. Choose a subrace for your aransi. \page

#### Argyrona The goddess Argyrona blessed you and your ancestors with an amphibious body capable of surviving in the deepest of water.

***Spider of the Depths.*** Adapted to the deepest of lakes and cenotes, you have resistance to cold damage.

***Partially Amphibious.*** You have a swimming speed of 30 feet, and you can breathe underwater for a number of hours equal to your Constitution modifier by storing air in a sac around your body. Once you've reached that limit, you can't use this trait again until you finish a long rest.

#### Labidea Labidea, cunning as he was, decided to bless you with a lineage that knows toxins like the back of their hand.

***Poison Resistance.*** You have resistance to poison damage.

***Envenom.*** Your pedipalps and their sharp fang-like spines are a natural weapon, which you can use to make unarmed strikes. If you hit with them, you deal piercing damage equal to 1d4 + your Strength modifier, instead of the bludgeoning damage normal for an unarmed strike. A creature bitten by you must succeed on a DC 12 Constitution saving throw or be paralyzed until the end of its next turn. Once you use this trait, you can't do so again until you finish a short or long rest.

#### Saltorio Recipients of Saltorio's blessing are known for their high visual acuity and impressive mobility.

***Standing Leap.*** Your long jump is up to 25 feet and your high jump is up to 15 feet, with or without a running start.

***Superior Darkvision.*** You can see in dim light within 120 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can't discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.

#### Taranta Aransi of Taranta are not always as scary as their hairy bodies make them out to be—it would be in your best interest though to avoid giving them a hug, though.

***Extrasensory Setae.*** You have proficiency with Wisdom (Perception) checks.

***Hirsute Form.*** Any creature that grapples you or otherwise comes into direct contact with your skin must succeed on a DC 12 Constitution saving throw or be incapacitated until the end of its next turn as it tries to remove the itchy hairs from its body.

### Cernonna Traits

***Age.*** Cernonna mature and age at about the same rate as humans.

***Size.*** Cernonna stand between 6 and 7 feet tall, with their cervid bodies reaching about 4 feet at the withers. Your size is Medium.

***Speed.*** Your base walking speed is 40 feet.

***Fey.*** Your creature type is fey, rather than humanoid.

***Antlers.*** Your antlers are natural melee weapons, which you can use to make unarmed strikes. If you hit with them, you deal piercing damage equal to 1d6 + your Strength modifier.

***Assailing Antlers.*** Immediately after you hit a creature with a melee attack as a part of the Attack action on your turn, you can use a bonus action to attempt to shove that target with your antlers. The target must be within 5 feet of you and no more than one size larger than you. Unless it succeeds on a Strength saving throw against a DC equal to 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Strength modifier, you push it up to 10 feet away from you.

***Cervid Build.*** You count as one size larger when determining your carrying capacity and the weight you can push or drag. In addition, any climb that requires hands and feet is especially difficult for you because of your cervid legs. When you make such a climb, each foot of movement costs you 4 extra feet, instead of the normal 1 extra foot.

***Survivor.*** You have proficiency in one of the following skills: Animal Handling, Medicine, Nature, or Survival.

### Dwarf Traits

***Age.*** Dwarves mature at the same rate as humans, but they're considered young until they reach the age of 50. On average, they live about 350 years.

***Size.*** Dwarves stand between 4 and 5 feet tall and average about 150 pounds. Your size is Medium.

***Speed.*** Your base walking speed is 30 feet.

***Darkvision.*** Accustomed to life underground, you have superior vision in dark and dim conditions. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can't discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.

***Dwarven Resilience.*** You have advantage on saving throws against poison, and you have resistance against poison damage.

***Subrace.*** Dwarves living in different environments have learned to adapt and overcome the difficulties of the terrain. The three major subraces of dwarf are cave, hill, and mountain. Choose a subrace for your dwarf.

#### Cave Dwarf These dwarves make their homes within the caves and dolines scattered across the land, eking out a life for themselves within the water and earth around them.

***Dwarven Insight.*** You have advantage on saving throws against illusions.

#### Hill Dwarf Hill dwarves are known for their toughness and vitality.

***Dwarven Toughness.*** Your hit point maximum increases by 1, and it increases by 1 every time you gain a level.

#### Mountain Dwarf Mountain dwarves are used to very rough and tumble rocky terrain.

***Dwarven Gait.*** You can move across difficult terrain made of earth or stone without expending extra movement.

### Elf Traits ***Age.*** Although elves reach physical maturity at about the same age as humans, the elven understanding of adulthood goes beyond physical growth to encompass worldly experience. An elf typically claims adulthood and an adult name around the age of 100 and can live to be 750 years old.

***Size.*** Elves range from under 5 to over 6 feet tall and have slender builds. Your size is Medium.

***Speed.*** Your base walking speed is 30 feet.

***Darkvision.*** Accustomed to twilit forests and the night sky, you have superior vision in dark and dim conditions. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can't discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.

***Fey Ancestry.*** You have advantage on saving throws against being charmed.

***Trance.*** Elves do not sleep and cannot be put to sleep by magical means. Instead they meditate deeply, remaining semi-conscious, for 4 hours a day. The Common word for this meditation is "trance." While meditating, you dream after a fashion; such dreams are actually mental exercises that have become reflexive after years of practice. After resting in this way, you gain the same benefit a human would from 8 hours of sleep.

***Keen Senses.*** You have proficiency in the Perception skill.

***Subrace.*** Elves are known to be of many different varieties depending on the land from which they hail. The five major subraces of elf in the Dernwilds are dark, desert, forest, savannah, and wetland.

#### Dark Elf Also known as the drow, these elves take up residence underground in different cave systems, forming vast underground societies.

***Superior Darkvision.*** Your darkvision has a range of 120 feet, instead of 60.

***Drow Magic.*** You know the Dancing Lights cantrip. When you reach 3rd level, you can cast the spell Faerie Fire once with this trait and regain the ability to do so when you finish a long rest. When you reach 5th level, you can cast the Darkness spell once and regain the ability to do so when you finish a long rest. If you have any spell slots, you can use those to cast the spells instead. You can choose between Charisma, Intelligence, or Wisdom when deciding your spellcasting ability for these spells.

#### Desert Elf Desert elves are well-acclimated with the dry heat and windblown sand that their homes are known for.

***Heat Resistance.*** You have resistance to fire damage and do not suffer the effects of extreme heat.

***Mirage Step.*** You can cast the Misty Step spell once using this trait. You regain the ability to do so when you finish a short or long rest. If you have any spell slots, you can use those to cast the spell instead.

#### Forest Elf Forest elves, more commonly known as wood elves, populate the many rainforested areas that the Dernwilds has to offer.

***Fleet of Foot.*** Your base walking speed increases to 35 feet.

***Mask of the Wild.*** You can attempt to hide even when you are only lightly obscured by foliage, heavy rain, falling snow, mist, and other natural phenomena.

#### Savannah Elf The savannah elves have the innate ability to channel some of the natural energy around them within themselves.

***Nature's Blessing.*** You have proficiency in the Nature skill.

***Cantrip.*** You know one cantrip of your choice from the Druid spell list. You can choose between Charisma, Intelligence, or Wisdom when deciding your spellcasting ability for it.

#### Wetland Elf The alune or wetland elves are right at home in the wetlands and mangroves of the Dernwilds.

***Child of the Rivers.*** You have a swimming speed equal to your walking speed, and you can breathe air and water.

***Friend of the Rivers.*** Using gestures and sounds, you can communicate simple ideas with any beast that has an innate swimming speed.

### Gnome Traits ***Age.*** Gnomes mature at the same rate as humans, and most are expected to settle into adult life around the age of 40. They can live to 350 years on average, but it's not too uncommon for them to reach 500 years of age.

***Size.*** Gnomes are between 3 and 4 feet tall and weigh around 40 pounds. Your size is Small.

***Speed.*** Your base walking speed is 30 feet.

***Darkvision.*** Accustomed to life underground, you have superior vision in dark and dim conditions. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can't discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.

***Gnomish Magic Resistance.*** You have advantage on all Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma saves against spells.

#### Forest Gnome Forest gnomes tend to live within the trees, hollowing them out or growing them in specific ways to make their homes.

***Natural Illusionist.*** You know the Minor Illusion cantrip. You can choose between Charisma, Intelligence, or Wisdom when deciding your spellcasting ability for it.

***Speak with Small Beasts.*** Through sound and gestures, you may communicate simple ideas with Small or smaller beasts.

#### Cave Gnome The cave gnome, sometimes mistaken for the more known svirfneblin, is adapted to a spelunker's lifestyle.

***Superior Darkvision.*** Your darkvision has a radius of 120 feet.

***Spelunker's Magic.*** When you reach 3rd level, you can cast the spell disguise self once with this trait and regain the ability to do so when you finish a long rest. When you reach 5th level, you can cast the Nondetection spell once and regain the ability to do so when you finish a long rest. If you have any spell slots, you can use those to cast the spells instead. You can choose between Charisma, Intelligence, or Wisdom when deciding your spellcasting ability for these spells.

***Stone Camouflage.*** You can give yourself advantage on Dexterity (stealth) checks a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus.

### Grung Traits ***Age.*** Grungs mature to adulthood in a single year, but have been known to live up to 50 years.

***Arboreal Alertness.*** You have proficiency in the Perception skill.

***Size.*** Grungs stand between 2 ½ and 3 ½ feet tall and average about 30 pounds. Your size is Small.

***Speed.*** You have a base walking speed of 30 feet. Your sticky finger and toe pads give you a climb speed equal to your walking speed.

***Amphibious.*** You can breathe air and water.

***Poison Resistance.*** You have resistance to poison damage.

***Poisonous Skin.*** Any creature that grapples you or otherwise comes into direct contact with your skin must succeed on a DC 12 Constitution saving throw or become poisoned for 1 minute. A poisoned creature no longer in direct contact with you can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success. You can also apply this poison to any piercing weapon as part of an attack with that weapon, though when you hit the poison reacts differently. The target must succeed on a DC 12 Constitution saving throw or take 2d4 poison damage.

***Standing Leap.*** Your long jump is up to 25 feet and your high jump is up to 15 feet, with or without a running start. Water Dependency. If you fail to immerse yourself in water for at least 1 hour during a day, you suffer 1 level of exhaustion at the end of that day. You can recover from this exhaustion only through magic or by immersing yourself in water for at least 1 hour.

### Half-Elf Traits ***Age.*** Half-elves age at much the same rate as humans, reaching adulthood at the age of 20. They live much longer than humans, however, often exceeding 180 years.

***Size.*** Half-elves are more or less the same size as humans, ranging from 5 to 6 feet tall. Your size is Medium.

***Speed.*** Your base walking speed is 30 feet.

***Darkvision.*** Thanks to your elven heritage, you have superior vision in dark and dim conditions. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can't discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.

### Half-Orc Traits ***Age.*** Half-orcs mature a little faster than humans, reaching adulthood around age 14. They age noticeably faster and rarely live longer than 75 years.

***Size.*** Half-orcs are somewhat larger and bulkier than humans, and they range from 5 to well over 6 feet tall. Your size is Medium.

***Speed.*** Your base walking speed is 30 feet.

***Keen Senses.*** When you make a Wisdom (Perception) check that relies on smell or a Wisdom (Survival) check, you can roll a d4 and add the number rolled to the total ability check.

***Orcish Endurance.*** When you are reduced to 0 hit points but not killed outright, you can drop to 1 hit point instead. You can't use this feature again until you finish a long rest.

***Claws.*** Because of your claws, you can hang onto surfaces provided you have at least one free hand. In addition, your claws are natural weapons, which you can use to make unarmed strikes. If you hit with them, you deal slashing damage equal to 1d4 + your Strength modifier, instead of the bludgeoning damage normal for an unarmed strike.

***Powerful Build.*** You count as one size larger when determining your carrying capacity and the weight you can push, drag, or lift. ### Hemeling Traits ***Age.*** Hemelings age at the same rate as humans, but can live up to 160 years.

***Size.*** Hemelings are about the same size and build as humans. Your size is Medium.

***Speed.*** Your base walking speed is 30 feet.

***Blessed Hands.*** You know the Guidance cantrip and can cast it without requiring material components. When you reach 3rd level, you can cast the spell Ceremony once with this trait without requiring material components and regain the ability to do so when you finish a long rest. If you have any spell slots, you can use those to cast the spell instead. You can choose between Charisma, Intelligence, or Wisdom when deciding your spellcasting ability for it.

***Celestial Resistance.*** You have resistance to necrotic and radiant damage.

***Twin Soul.*** You have advantage on all Charisma saving throws.

***Severed From Dreams.*** Hemelings do sleep but they don’t experience dreams as other creatures do. Instead, their minds draw from the memories of their celestial ancestors while they sleep. As such, you are immune to magical spells and effects that require you to dream, like the Dream spell, but not to spells and effects that put you to sleep, like the Sleep spell.

### Human Traits ***Age.*** Humans reach adulthood in their late teens and live less than a century.

***Size.*** Humans vary widely in height and build, from barely 5 feet to well over 6 feet tall. Regardless of your position in that range, your size is Medium.

***Speed.*** Your base walking speed is 30 feet.

***Skills.*** You gain proficiency in one skill of your choice.

### Lizardfolk Traits ***Age.*** Lizardfolk reach maturity around age 14 and rarely live longer than 60 years.

***Size.*** Lizardfolk are a little bulkier and taller than humans, and their colorful frills make them appear even larger. Your size is Medium.

***Speed.*** Your base walking speed is 30 feet, and you have a swimming speed equal to your walking speed.

***Bite.*** Your fanged maw is a natural weapon, which you can use to make unarmed strikes. If you hit with it, you deal slashing damage equal to 1d6 + your Strength modifier, instead of the bludgeoning damage normal for an unarmed strike.

***Hunter's Lore.*** You gain proficiency with two of the following skills of your choice: Animal Handling, Nature, Perception, Stealth, and Survival.

***Natural Armor.*** You have tough, scaly skin. When you aren't wearing armor, your AC is 13 + your Dexterity modifier. You can use your natural armor to determine your AC if the armor you wear would leave you with a lower AC. A shield's benefits apply as normal while you use your natural armor.

***Reptilian Ancestry.*** Being descended from reptiles, you have a racial trait based on your ancestral background. Choose a reptilian ancestral trait for your character:

- ***Color Change (Anolis Ancestry).*** You can change your color to hide yourself or intimidate your enemies. As a bonus action, you can change colors to match that of the environment around you or make yourself more intimidating. When you do so, you get advantage on any Dexterity (Stealth) or Charisma (Intimidation) check you make. The color change itself lasts for up to 1 minute, and you can change colors a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus. You regain all uses when you complete a long rest. - ***Hungry Jaws (Crocodilian Ancestry).*** In battle, you can throw yourself into a vicious feeding frenzy. As a bonus action, you can make a special attack with your bite. If the attack hits, it deals its normal damage, and you gain temporary hit points (minimum of 1) equal to your proficiency bonus. You can use this feature a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus and regain all uses when you complete a long rest.

- ***Tail Whip (Iguanid Ancestry).*** In battle, you can use your tail to lash out a quick, punishing blow. As an action, you can attack using your tail instead of your bite. Your tail whip has a reach of 10 feet and deals the same damage as your bite. When you hit a creature with your tail, it must make a DC 12 Constitution saving throw. On a failed save, the target has disadvantage on ability checks it makes until the end of its turn. You can use this feature a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus and regain all uses when you complete a long rest. ### Locathah Traits ***Age.*** Locathah mature to adulthood by the age of 10 but have been known to live up to 80 years.

***Size.*** Locathah stand between 5 and 6 feet tall and average about 150 pounds. Your size is Medium.

***Speed.*** Your base walking speed is 30 feet, and you have a swim speed of 30 feet.

***Natural Armor.*** You have tough, scaly skin. When you aren’t wearing armor, your AC is 12 + your Dexterity modifier. You can use your natural armor to determine your AC if the armor you wear would leave you with a lower AC. A shield’s benefits apply as normal while you use your natural armor.

***Observant and Athletic.*** You have proficiency in the Athletics and Perception skills.

***Leviathan Will.*** You have advantage on saving throws against being charmed, frightened, paralyzed, poisoned, stunned, or put to sleep.

***Limited Amphibiousness.*** You can breathe air and water, but you need to be submerged at least once every 4 hours to avoid suffocating.

### Plasmoid Traits ***Age.*** Plasmoids consider themselves to have reached adulthood from birth and typically live until they are 50.

***Creature Type.*** You are an Ooze.

***Size.*** You are Medium or Small. You choose the size when you gain this race.

***Speed.*** Your walking speed is 30 feet.

***Amorphous.*** You can squeeze through a space as narrow as 1 inch wide, provided you are wearing and carrying nothing. You also have advantage on ability checks you make to initiate or escape a grapple.

***Darkvision.*** You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light and in darkness as if it were dim light. You discern colors in that darkness only as shades of gray.

***Hold Breath.*** You can hold your breath for 1 hour.

***Natural Resilience.*** You have resistance to acid and poison damage, and you have advantage on saving throws against being poisoned.

***Shape Self.*** If you are not incapacitated, you can reshape your body to give yourself a head, one or two arms, one or two legs, and makeshift hands and feet, or you can revert to a limbless blob (no action required). As a bonus action, you can extrude a pseudopod that is up to 6 inches wide and 10 feet long or reabsorb it into your body. You can use this pseudopod to manipulate an object, open an unlocked door or container, stow or retrieve an item from an open container, or pour out the contents of a container. The pseudopod can’t attack, activate magic items, or carry more than 10 pounds.

### Tabaxi Traits ***Age.*** Tabaxi have lifespans equivalent to humans.

***Size.*** Tabaxi are taller on average than humans and relatively slender. Your size is Medium.

***Speed.*** Your base walking speed is 30 feet.

***Darkvision.*** You have a cat's keen senses, especially in the dark. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can't discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.

***Feline Agility.*** Your reflexes and agility allow you to move with a burst of speed. When you move on your tum in combat, you can double your speed until the end of the tum. Once you use this trait, you can't use it again until you move 0 feet on one of your turns.

***Cat's Claws.*** Because of your claws, you have a climbing speed equal to your walking speed. In addition, your claws are natural weapons, which you can use to make unarmed strikes. If you hit with them, you deal slashing damage equal to 1d4 + your Strength modifier, instead of the bludgeoning damage normal for an unarmed strike.

***Cat's Talent.*** You have proficiency in the Perception and Stealth skills.

### Tortle Traits ***Age.*** Young tortles crawl for a few weeks after birth before learning to walk on two legs. They reach adulthood by the age of 15 and live an average of 50 years.

***Size.*** Tortle adults stand 5 to 6 feet tall and average 450 pounds. Their shells account for roughly one-third of their weight. Your size is Medium.

***Speed.*** Your base walking speed is 30 feet.

***Claws.*** Your claws are natural weapons, which you can use to make unarmed strikes. If you hit with them, you deal slashing damage equal to 1d6 + your Strength modifier, instead of the bludgeoning damage normal for an unarmed strike.

***Hold Breath.*** You can hold your breath for up to 1 hour at a time. Tortles aren't natural swimmers, but they can remain underwater for some time before needing to come up for air.

***Natural Armor.*** Due to your shell and the shape of your body, you are ill-suited to wearing armor. Your shell provides ample protection, however; it gives you a base AC of 17 (your Dexterity modifier doesn't affect this number). You gain no benefit from wearing armor and cannot wear it due to your shell, but if you are using a shield, you can apply the shield's bonus as normal.

***Shell Defense.*** You can withdraw into your shell as an action. Until you emerge, you gain a +4 bonus to AC, and you have advantage on Strength and Constitution saving throws. While in your shell, you are prone, your speed is 0 and can't increase, you have disadvantage on Dexterity saving throws, you can't take reactions, and the only action you can take is a bonus action to emerge from your shell.

***Survival Instinct.*** You gain proficiency in the Survival skill. Tortles have finely honed survival instincts.

### Yuan-ti Pureblood Traits ***Age.*** Purebloods mature at the same rate as humans and have lifespans similar in length to theirs.

***Size.*** Purebloods match humans in average size and weight. Your size is Medium.

***Speed.*** Your base walking speed is 30 feet.

***Darkvision.*** You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can't discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.

***Serpentine Spellcasting.*** You can cast Animal Friendship an unlimited number of times with this trait, but you can target only snakes with it. Starting at 3rd level, you can also cast Suggestion with this trait. Once you cast it, you can't do so again until you finish a long rest. If you have any spell slots, you can use those to cast Suggestion instead. You can choose between Charisma, Intelligence, or Wisdom when deciding your spellcasting ability for these spells.

***Magic Resistance.*** You have advantage on saving throws against spells.

***Serpentine Ancestry.*** Being descended from snakes, you have a racial trait based on your ancestral background. Choose a serpentine ancestral trait for your character: - ***Constrict (Boid Ancestry).*** You have advantage on Strength (Athletics) checks against a creature you are grappling. When grappled by you, a creature takes 1d4 bludgeoning damage at the start of its turn. - ***Frightening Gaze (Naja Ancestry).*** You have advantage on Charisma (Intimidation) checks. As an action, you can focus your stare on one creature that you can see. It must succeed on a DC 12 Charisma saving throw or be frightened of you until the end of its next turn. Creatures that cannot see you or do not rely on sight to sense their environment are immune to this effect. - ***Heat Sense (Viperine Ancestry).*** You have advantage on Wisdom (Perception or Survival) checks. You have blindsight within 15 feet of you, allowing you to sense the creatures around you. You cannot benefit from this ability if you are blinded.

##### A Note About Class Feature Changes Every class you pick in this world will have the following rules implemented:

***Optional Features.*** Optional features that are in certain classes, such as the druid's Wild Companion or the ranger's Spellcasting Focus, are available should you choose to make a character that has these features.

***Weapons and Armor.*** Some weapons and armor will have their names changed in the game to match the technology available within the Dernwilds. Metals are an uncommon resource to use, so most weapons are usually made of bone, wood, or stone. Metals are considered rather expensive and are mainly used in copper alloys to make inlays for ploch, so they are not often used in weapons or armor.

# Dusk Walker Roguish Archetype You have grown accustomed to the darkness within the caves and the jungles, allowing you to seamlessly move within the world of shadows. Dusk walkers are rogues who feel at home in the shadows, using them to effortlessly stalk around in the darkness and strike fear into the hearts of others. Ambush hunters and secretive scouts, these rogues often assume these roles as they toe the line between the light and darkness.

### One Who Wades in Shadows *3rd-level Dusk Walker feature*

Starting at 3rd level, you gain darkvision out to a range of 60 feet. If you already have darkvision from your race, its range increases by 30 feet. In addition, when you are in dim light or darkness, you can use your Cunning Action in mysterious ways:

- ***Umbral Step.*** When you use your Cunning Action to dash, you can teleport up to 60 feet to an unoccupied space you can see that is also in dim light or darkness. - ***Shadowy Dance.*** When you use your Cunning Action to dodge, attack rolls made against you have disadvantage even if you cannot see the attacker. - ***Meld into Shadows.*** When you use your Cunning Action to hide, you are invisible to any creature that relies on darkvision to see you until your location is given away or unless you are in a well lit area or bright light.

### Twilight Ambusher *3rd-level Dusk Walker feature*

When you choose this archetype at 3rd level, you become better at ambush tactics. At the start of your first turn of each combat, your walking speed increases by 10 feet, which lasts until the end of that turn. In addition, any hit you score against a creature that is surprised is a critical hit. ### Silent Night *9th-level Dusk Walker feature*

At 9th level, when you make an ranged attack against a creature while hiding or invisible, the attack doesn't reveal your position. \page

### Umbral Cloak *13th-level Dusk Walker feature*

At 13th level, you fully embrace the shadows and become one of them. As a bonus action, you assume an umbral form. While in this form, you have a climbing speed equal to your walking speed, you can climb difficult surfaces, including upside down on ceilings, without needing to make an ability check, you are unable to attack or cast spells, and creatures cannot target you.

You can also move through the shadows of creatures as if they were difficult terrain. You stay in this form for 10 minutes or until you end it as a bonus action. To use this feature again, you must finish a long rest.

### Night Lord *17th-level Dusk Walker feature*

At 17th level, your affinity to the shadows grants you the following abilities: - If you attack a creature on the same turn after using your Umbral Step or Meld into Shadows, your Sneak Attack damage against that creature increases by 3d6. - You can your Umbral Cloak an unlimited number of times. \page

### Circle of Bones Druids of the Circle of Bones do not concern themselves with the current affairs of the natural world, choosing instead to avert their gaze toward the world as it used to be. These druids see and feel the residual life that still exists within the fossilized remains of creatures. To them, undeath is not something to be abhorred but rather something that is considered to be a key that allows them to transcend time and understand the lives that used to be. Death is still an end to all living things, but within death, there exists a rich history of life, and these druids feel that undeath is the only way to make sure that story is known. #### Circle Spells *2nd-level Circle of Bones feature*

Your connection to fossils, their histories, and the undead grants you access to certain spells. At 2nd level, you learn the Sapping Sting cantrip.

At 3rd, 5th, 7th, and 9th level you gain access to the spells listed for that level in the Circle of Bones Spells table. Once you gain access to one of these spells, you always have it prepared, and it doesn't count against the number of spells you can prepare each day. If you gain access to a spell that doesn't appear on the druid spell list, the spell is nonetheless a druid spell for you.

At 2nd level, you gain proficiency with History if you do not already have it. When performing an Intelligence (Investigation) or Wisdom (Survival) check on the remains of a creature, you learn information about how long it has been since the creature's passing or what kind of life it lived.

In addition, whenever you finish a long rest, you can touch the remains of an ancient beast such as a petrified bone or a piece of amber and resonate with the residual life energy inside it, allowing you to wildshape into that beast. You ignore the Limitations column of the Wildshape table for the beasts you resonate with, but must abide by the other restrictions there. You can resonate with a number of beasts equal to your Wisdom modifier, and if you try to exceed your maximum number of attunements the oldest one ends and the newest applies.

#### Ancient Beast *2nd-level Circle of Bones feature*

Also at 2nd level, you can reanimate a fossil from deep within the ground. As an action, you can expend one use of your Wild Shape feature to summon an ancient beast, rather than assuming a beast form.

The ancient beast appears in an unoccupied space of your choice that you can see within 30 feet of you. The beast is friendly to you and your companions and obeys your commands. Choose its stat block—Ancient of the Land, Ancient of the Sea, or Ancient of the Sky—which uses your proficiency bonus (PB) in several places. You also determine the kind of animal the beast is, choosing a kind appropriate for the stat block. Whatever kind you choose, the beast will take on an appearance that indicates its undeath.

In combat, the beast shares your initiative count, but it takes its turn immediately after yours. The only action it takes on its turn is the Dodge action, unless you take a bonus action on your turn to command it to take another action. That action can be one in its stat block or some other action. If you are incapacitated, the beast can take any action of its choice, not just Dodge.

The beast manifests for 1 hour, until it is reduced to 0 hit points, until you use this feature to summon the beast again, or until you die.

#### Memento Mori *6th-level Circle of Bones feature*

At 6th level, you gain a better understanding of the rich history of life that exists within death, giving you the knowledge needed to tamper with the narrative. When you or your ancient beast reduces a creature to 0 hit points, you can release some of its life's memories in the form of positive or negative energy as a reaction.

When you do so, choose between Positive or Negative. If you choose Positive, you roll 1d8 and choose a number of creatures that you can see within 15 feet of the dead creature that will gain temporary hit points equal to the roll. If you choose Negative, you roll 1d8 and choose a number of creatures that you can see within 15 feet of the dead creature that will take an amount of necrotic damage equal to the roll.

#### Ritual of Time *10th-level Circle of Bones feature*

At 10th level, when you cast a spell meant to return life to a creature that has died recently like *revivify*, you can forego all stipulations regarding the limits of time on the spell. When you cast a spell in this manner, it is treated as a ritual and the casting time depends on the amount of time that has transpired since the creature's death. See the Ritual of Time Table to determine the length of each ritual.

At 14th level, the connection you have to your ancient beast allows you to momentarily escape your end. If your ancient beast is within 120 feet of you when you are reduced to 0 hit points and thereby fall unconscious, you can cause the ancient beast to drop to 0 hit points. You then regain half your hit points and rise to your feet.

Once you use this feature, you can't use it again until you finish a long rest. ### The Domainseeker Ranger Rather than waiting around to be in the right environment to work with, some rangers change the immediate environment around them to suit their needs. You have grown fond of certain environments during your travels despite your wanderlust, and rather than leave them behind, you've managed to make a connection to the spirits of nature in one way or another to let them bring the essence of the terrain with you.

You are a Domainseeker, a ranger who uses the wisdom they've cultivated from their natural environment to change the world as they see it. As you traverse the lands, you also bring them with you, letting friends see where you've been and making foes understand that no matter where you are, this is your turf. ### Natural Domain *3rd-level Domainseeker feature*

At 3rd level, you can use a bonus action to call on the spirits of nature to shift the current environment in your favor, making it into your natural domain. When you do so, an aura extends 10 feet from you in every direction as a sphere, but not through total cover.

You gain the effects you would normally gain from your favored terrain while your domain is active. Any additional effects of your domain depend on the terrain you chose with the Natural Explorer feature, and the domain itself lasts for 10 minutes. Your domain has an effect that occurs when it activates, and you can activate the effect again on each of your turns as a bonus action.

When you first activate your domain, choose a number of creatures you can see within 30 feet of you that the aura will affect, marking them mystically. These creatures will experience the following effects when in your domain in addition to any additional effects provided by your terrain:

- Marked creatures that move into or start their turn in your domain have their movement speed halved as the area becomes difficult terrain for them. - Marked creatures that attempt to make an opportunity attack against you do so with disadvantage.

You can activate your domain a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, and you regain all uses on a long rest. If your domain’s effects require a saving throw, the DC equals 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Wisdom modifier. It ends early if you are knocked unconscious or incapacitated. You can also deactivate your domain on your turn as a bonus action.

As you gain additional terrains from your Natural Explorer feature at 6th and 10th level, you can freely choose which terrain your domain will emulate, choosing one to express at a time. Switching between terrains counts towards the number of times you can activate your domain.

##### Natural Domain Features Aside from the effects other creatures experience when they enter your natural domain, your favored terrain applies additional effects to your domain. These effects apply to any creatures already in your domain upon activation. As a bonus action on your turn, you can use one of the abilities unique to the terrain associated with your domain:

##### Arctic - ***Frostbite.*** All marked creatures within your domain must make a Constitution saving throw. On a failed save, the target takes 1d6 cold damage as arctic spirits attempt to freeze them to the bone. - ***Slip and Slide.*** Choose one marked creature within your domain. The target must make a Dexterity saving throw. On a failed save, the target becomes knocked prone as arctic spirits create ice to disrupt its footing. ##### Coast - ***Carapace Armor.*** You gain a number of temporary hit points equal to your Wisdom modifier as coastal spirits fend off harm with a protective shell that surrounds you. - ***Ink Cloud.*** Choose one marked creature within your domain. The target must make a Dexterity saving throw. The target is blinded on a failed save until the end of their next turn as coastal spirits blind them with ink. ##### Desert - ***Dust Devil.*** Choose one marked creature within your domain. The target must make a Strength saving throw. On a failed save, the target is pushed 10 feet away from you in a straight line as desert spirits whip up a small dust devil to push them out. - ***Shrivel.*** All marked creatures within your domain must make a Constitution saving throw. On a failed save, the target takes 1d6 fire damage as desert spirits attempt to dry them out. ##### Forest - ***Hay Fever.*** All marked creatures within your domain must make a Constitution saving throw. On a failed save, the target takes 1d6 poison damage and has disadvantage on the next weapon attack roll it makes as forest spirits distract it with toxic pollen, causing it to sneeze profusely. Creatures that do not need to breathe are immune to this effect, automatically passing their save. - ***Underbrush.*** Forest spirits help to obscure your form from others whenever you take the Hide action, giving you advantage on any Dexterity (Stealth) checks you make. When you target a marked creature with a ranged weapon attack while hiding, making the attack doesn't reveal your position. ##### Grassland - ***Crabgrass.*** Choose one marked creature in your domain that you can see. The target must make a Dexterity saving throw. On a failed save, the target is restrained as grassland spirits entangle it, holding it in place. A creature restrained in this manner or one that can touch the creature can use its action to make a Strength check against your save DC. On a success, the target is freed. \page

On a failed save, the target takes 1d6 bludgeoning damage as mountain spirits attempt to crush it. - ***Landslide.*** All marked creatures within your domain must make a Dexterity saving throw. On a failed save, the target gets pushed or pulled 10 feet horizontally in a direction of your choice as mountain spirits attempt to push it around. ##### Swamp - ***Corrode.*** All marked creatures within your domain must make a Constitution saving throw. On a failed save, the target takes 1d6 acid damage as swamp spirits attempt to slowly digest it. If the target is missing any of its hit points, it instead takes 1d8 acid damage. - ***Quicksand.*** Choose one marked creature within your domain. The target must make a Strength saving throw. On a failed save, the target is frightened of you until the end of its turn as cave spirits instill an instinctual fear within it. A frightened creature can use its action to make a Charisma saving throw against your save DC. On a success, the creature is immune to the effect for 24 hours. - ***Thunderous Echo*** All marked creatures within your domain must make a Wisdom saving throw. On a failed save, the target is deafened until the end of its turn as cave spirits disrupt its senses of hearing. Creatures that do not rely on hearing to sense their environment are immune to this effect.

### Natural Gift *3rd-level Domainseeker feature*

At 3rd level, you can manifest the power of your natural domain within yourself as well, augmenting your abilities. The gift you receive depends on the favored terrain you have chosen with Natural Explorer, and you gain additional gifts as you gain more favored terrains.

Depending on your favored terrain, you gain resistance to a damage type determined by your favored terrain: arctic (cold), coast (lightning), desert (fire), forest (poison), grassland (poison), mountain (thunder), swamp (acid), or underdark (psychic). You can change the resistance you receive from Domain Protection at the end of a long rest.

### Aura Augmentation *11th-level Domainseeker feature*

At 11th level, your connection to nature has increased, augmenting the abilities of your aura. Your aura now extends 30 feet from you, and all damaging abilities from your domain increase their damage dice, changing from 1d6 to 1d8 and from 1d8 to 1d10 respectively. ### Communal Domain *15th-level Domainseeker feature*

At 15th level, you’ve gained more control over your ability to channel the spirits of nature, allowing you to extend your boons to your allies. When you activate your domain, you can choose a number of creatures that will reap the benefits you receive from Natural Gift while it is in your domain. \page

## Thaumaturge Arms stretched out to the people around the battlefield, a young elf's fingertips begin to glow with a soft light that spills out to heal his weary compatriots. With her cloak obscuring her form, a human creeps up to a mercenary camp, whispering to herself as the cold, night air condenses into an icicle in her hands. The two guards watching the main tent fall dead before they knew what hit them. A wizened dwarf snaps their fingers, setting their torch alight as they ease open the door of the dark crypt and head down the stairs. Thaumaturges are manipulators of the magical energy within the Weave. Through well-practiced movements of the hands and a well-versed mind to boot, thaumaturges can control the Weave's energy with their fingertips. By taking the divine power of the gods for themselves, they have unlocked magical powers the likes of which most have not seen.

### One With The Weave The Weave is the name given to the source from which all magic of all types originates from. Whereas some spellcasters need to have some form of a device through which they can channel the Weave's magical power, thaumaturges act as conduits for the Weave itself, to produce works of wonder. Mastering this power requires training, but the actual process of acquiring the power involves a ritual. Thaumaturges make a connection with the Weave by incorporating a magical object in their bodies. A soon-to-be thaumaturge may ingest a vial of serum from a celestial or undergo a surgical operation to place a rare crystal deep inside their body. Once the process is complete and the person does not die from mana shock, they become a thaumaturge. The amount of magic they have access to grows with them over time, but it is not everything. Thaumaturges supplement their magical abilities with some martial skills, defending themselves with simple weapons and light armor. ### A Secret's Cost Thaumaturges are also called "the mana-touched" due to the slight scarring their body receives as a result of the ritual they underwent that leaves their bodies scarred in a way that cannot be healed—it's a corporal symbol known as a pretio amongst their ilk. Their drive for the knowledge and power of the Weave impels them to undergo the ritual and shapes their careers as thaumaturges. The story of gaining this power to stand up against a supreme entity such as a god is well-known—the gods of the Dernwilds were taken out by this very power. But many people practice thaumaturgy for other reasons. Sometimes a traveler happens upon a rare creature and hunts it for game, only to wake up as a thaumaturge days later. Others do so out of pure desperation or via a failed assassination, becoming a thaumaturge after being injected or stabbed with a magical item. Once a thaumaturge is aware of the Weave's power, it is hard to ignore. Their eyes, having been opened to the possibilities of raw magic, are rarely averted from these new wonders, often resulting in an active need to pursue an adventurous goal that will help them discover all the Weave has to offer. ### Creating a Thaumaturge As you make your thaumaturge character, take the time to consider the ritual you underwent and how the newfound power you've gained because of it has affected you. Were you tricked into becoming one, or did you seek out the ritual for yourself? Did the ritual scar you internally, or do you view your pretio as a mark of pride? How do you feel about the magical energy within you? Are you amazed by its power or do you find yourself reluctant to rely on it? Do you see it as a bane or a boon? Did you have the option to refuse it and do you wish you had? What do you intend to do with this power? Perhaps you feel that it was something you sought out to achieve a lofty goal. Or maybe you feel that the power was given so you can shape the world around you as you see fit. #### Quick Build You can make a thaumaturge quickly by following these suggestions. First, Wisdom should be your highest ability score, followed by Charisma. Second, choose the hermit background.

### Thaumaturgy You have a connection with magic and understand how it moves through the Weave. To observers, you don’t seem to be casting spells; you pull this magic from the Weave around you and shape it to your preferred form. #### Hands Required As a thaumaturge, you manipulate the energy of the Weave through your fingertips, drawing intangible esoteric symbols with them. You must have a free hand when you cast any spell with this feature (meaning the spell has an "S" component when you cast it). #### Cantrips (0-Level Spells) At 1st level, you know three cantrips from the [thaumaturge spell list](http://dnd5e.wikidot.com/spells:cleric). At higher levels, you learn additional thaumaturge cantrips of your choice, as shown in the Cantrips Known column of the Thaumaturge table. When you gain a level in this class, you can replace one of the thaumaturge cantrips you know with another cantrip from the thaumaturge spell list. #### Preparing and Casting Spells The Thaumaturge table shows how many spell slots you have to cast your thaumaturge spells of 1st level and higher. To cast one of these thaumaturge spells, you must expend a slot of the spell's level or higher. You regain all expended spell slots when you finish a long rest. You prepare the list of thaumaturge spells that are available for you to cast, choosing from the [thaumaturge spell list](http://dnd5e.wikidot.com/spells:cleric). When you do so, choose a number of thaumaturge spells equal to your Wisdom modifier + your Thaumaturge level (minimum of one spell). The spells must be of a level for which you have spell slots.

For example, if you are a 3rd-level thaumaturge, you have four 1st-level and two 2nd-level spell slots. With a Wisdom of 16, your list of prepared spells can include six spells of 1st or 2nd level, in any combination. If you prepare the 1st-level spell Cure Wounds, you can cast it using a 1st-level or 2nd-level slot. Casting the spell doesn't remove it from your list of prepared spells. You can also change your list of prepared spells when you finish a long rest. Preparing a new list of thaumaturge spells requires time spent in deep contemplation and meditation: at least 1 minute per spell level for each spell on your list.

#### Spellcasting Ability Wisdom is your spellcasting ability for your thaumaturge spells since your magic draws upon your deep connection to the Weave. You use your Wisdom whenever a spell refers to your spellcasting ability. In addition, you use your Wisdom modifier when setting the saving throw DC for a druid spell you cast and when making an attack roll with one. - **Spell save DC** = 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Wisdom modifier - **Spell attack modifier** = your proficiency bonus + your Wisdom modifier #### Ritual Casting You can cast a thaumaturge spell as a ritual if that spell has the ritual tag and you have the spell prepared. ### Esoteric Cabal When you reach 3rd level with this class, you choose to align yourself with an esoteric cabal of thaumaturges, modeling your works of wonder after one of them. Choose a cabal: the Cabal of Blood, the Cabal of Contrivance, the Cabal of Fantasies, the Cabal of the Third Eye, and the Cabal of the World. Your choice grants you cabal spells and other features when you choose it at 1st level. It also grants you additional ways to use Invoke Phenomenon when you gain that feature at 2nd level, and additional benefits at 6th, 8th, and 17th levels. #### Cabal Spells Each cabal has a list of domain spells that you gain at the thaumaturge levels noted in the cabal description. Once you gain a cabal spell, you always have it prepared, and it doesn't count against the number of spells you can prepare each day.

If you have a cabal spell that doesn't appear on the thaumaturge spell list, the spell is nonetheless a thaumaturge spell for you. ### Wondrous Phenomenon At 2nd level, you've learned how to channel magic from the Weave and invoke simple works of wonder into reality. You start with two such effects: Turn Evil and Good and an effect determined by your domain. Some cabals grant you additional effects as you advance in levels, as noted in the cabal description.

When you use your Wondrous Phenomenon, you choose which effect to create. You must then finish a short or long rest to use your Wondrous Phenomenon again.

Some Wondrous Phenomenon effects require saving throws. When you use such an effect from this class, the DC equals your cleric spell save DC.

Beginning at 6th level, you can use your Wondrous Phenomenon twice between rests, and beginning at 18th level, you can use it three times between rests. When you finish a short or long rest, you regain your expended uses.

#### Wondrous Phenomenon: Turn Evil and Good As an action, you create an esoteric symbol in the air with your hands and say a chant censuring the heavens and the hells. Each celestial or undead that can see or hear you within 30 feet of you must make a Wisdom saving throw. If the creature fails its saving throw, it is turned for 1 minute or until it takes any damage.

A turned creature must spend its turns trying to move as far away from you as it can, and it can't willingly move to a space within 30 feet of you. It also can't take reactions. For its action, it can use only the Dash action or try to escape from an effect that prevents it from moving. If there's nowhere to move, the creature can use the Dodge action. ### Harness Arcane Energy (Optional) At 2nd level, you can expend a use of your Wondrous Phenomenon to fuel your spells. As a bonus action, you focus on your pretio and regain one expended spell slot, the level of which can be no higher than half your proficiency bonus (rounded up). The number of times you can use this feature is based on the level you've reached in this class: 2nd level, once; 6th level, twice; and 18th level, thrice. You regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest. ### Ability Score Improvement When you reach 4th level, and again at 8th, 12th, 16th, and 19th level, you can increase one ability score of your choice by 2, or you can increase two ability scores of your choice by 1. As normal, you can't increase an ability score above 20 using this feature. ### Cantrip Versatility (Optional) Whenever you reach a level in this class that grants the Ability Score Improvement feature, you can replace one cantrip you learned from this class's Spellcasting feature with another cantrip from the cleric spell list. ### Destroy Evil and Good Starting at 5th level, when a celestial or undead fails its saving throw against your Turn Evil and Good feature, the creature is instantly destroyed if its challenge rating is at or below a certain threshold, as shown in the Thaumaturge table above. \page

### Mystical Intervention Beginning at 10th level, you can call on the Weave to intervene on your behalf when your need is great.

Imploring the Weave's aid requires you to use your action. Describe the assistance you seek, and roll percentile dice. If you roll a number equal to or lower than your thaumaturge level, your deity intervenes. The DM chooses the nature of the intervention; the effect of any thaumaturge spell or cabal spell would be appropriate. If the Weave intervenes, you can't use this feature again for 7 days. Otherwise, you can use it again after you finish a long rest.

At 20th level, your call for intervention succeeds automatically, no roll required. ## Esoteric Cabals These organizations are secretive and unbeknownst to the layperson, but most thaumaturges eventually manage to find themselves in a like-minded group of people known as a cabal. Within their cabals, thaumaturges regard each other like siblings of the same family. In the same vein, however, thaumaturges may feel a sense of competition or disdain for one another both within and outside of their own cabals. These cabals allow thaumaturges to share ideas and perspectives on the Weave and how to best use it. ### Cabal of Blood Thaumaturges from the Cabal of Blood understand the magical properties their blood contains due to the ritual they underwent. Their altered blood can be used to harm or heal, blessing or cursing those that it stains. The act of bloodletting itself might be painful, but that is no issue for these thaumaturges—as the saying goes in the cabal, "Qui dolet, vincit". ##### Cabal of Blood Spells | Thaumaturge Level | Spells | |:----:|:-------------| | 1st | *false life*, *cure wounds* | | 3rd | *lesser restoration*, *ray of enfeeblement* | | 5th | *revivify*, *vampiric touch* | | 7th | *blight*, *death ward* | | 9th | *antilife shell*, *mass cure wounds* | #### Bonus Proficiency When you choose this cabal at 1st level, you gain proficiency with the herbalism kit. #### Thaumaturgic Phletobotomy At 1st level, you can boost your spells by using special dice called blood dice. You have four blood dice, which are d6s. When you would normally roll one or more dice to restore hit points with a spell of 1st level or higher to a creature at 0 hit points, you can choose to use the highest number possible for each die rolled by taking necrotic damage equal to one roll of your blood die. This damage can’t be reduced in any way.

A blood die is expended when you use it. You regain all of your expended blood dice when you finish a long rest. You gain another blood die at 6th level and one more at 14th level. Your blood dice turn into d8s at 6th level and d10s at 14th level.

#### Wondrous Phenomenon: Blood Curse Starting at 2nd level, you can use your Wondrous Phenomenon to mark another creature’s life force for termination.

As an action, you choose one creature you can see within 30 feet of you and mark it with an esoteric symbol, cursing it until the end of your next turn. The next time you or an ally of yours hits the cursed creature with an attack, the creature has vulnerability to all of that attack's damage, and then the curse ends. #### Hemorrhagic Infusion At 6th level, you gain the ability to expedite death’s progress. As a reaction when a creature that you can see within 30 feet of you hits a target with a weapon or spell attack, you can spend a blood die to infuse the strike with negative energy, causing the target to take extra necrotic damage equal to your blood die roll.

#### Thaumaturgic Strikes At 8th level, you gain the ability to infuse your weapon strikes with necrotic energy. Once on each of your turns when you hit a creature with a weapon attack, you can cause the attack to deal an extra 1d8 necrotic damage to the target. When you reach 14th level, the extra damage increases to 2d8.

#### Circle of Life At 17th level, you can seize a trace of vitality from a dead creature and use it to heal the living. When an enemy you can see dies from an attack infused with energy from your Hemorrhagic Infusion, you or one ally of your choice that is within 30 feet of you regains hit points equal to half the amount of damage dealt by the killing blow, rounded up. You can use this feature only if you aren't incapacitated. Once you use it, you can't do so again until the start of your next turn. ### Cabal of Contrivance The Cabal of Contrivance understands that magic can exist in ordinary objects. #### Arcane Initiate When you choose this cabal at 1st level, you gain proficiency in the Arcana skill, and you gain two cantrips of your choice from the artificer spell list. For you, these cantrips count as cleric cantrips. #### Alter Objects At 1st level, you have a vague connection with the Weave that you can use to conjure simple magical effects within things in the world around you. To use this ability, you must have a free hand. You then choose a Tiny or Small non-magical object that you can see within 10 ft of you and give it one of the following magical properties of your choice as an action:

- A harmless flame envelops the object, shedding bright light in a 5 ft radius and dim light for an additional 5 ft. - The object becomes up to 10 lbs heavier or lighter. - The object undergoes a change in flavor or temperature of your choice. - The object undergoes a change in color or texture of your choice.

The chosen property lasts indefinitely. As an action, you can end the property early if you have a free hand. You can bestow magic on multiple objects, though a single object can only bear one property at a time. The maximum number of objects you can affect with this feature at one time is equal to your Wisdom modifier (minimum of one object). If you try to exceed your maximum, the oldest property immediately ends, and then the new property applies. #### Wondrous Phenomenon: Infuse Energy Starting at 2nd level, you can use your Wondrous Phenomenon to create an esoteric symbol on a Small or smaller non-magical object and instill it with energy, turning the object into a magical item. You can replicate one magic item from the artificer's [Replicate Magic Item table](http://dnd5e.wikidot.com/artificer:infusions#toc12). If the item requires attunement, you can attune yourself to it the instant you infuse the item. If you decide to attune to the item later, you must do so using the normal process for attunement ([see the attunement rules here](https://roll20.net/compendium/dnd5e/Magic%20Items#toc_1)).

Your infusion remains in an item indefinitely, but when you die, the infusion vanishes after a number of days equal to your Wisdom modifier (minimum of 1 day). You can only create one item at a time, and attempting to infuse energy into another object will destroy the previous magic item. If a magic item you create requires a target to make a saving throw to resist the item's effects, the saving throw DC equals 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Wisdom modifier. #### Wondrous Phenomenon: Thaumaturgic Animation By 6th level, as an action, you can create an esoteric symbol on a Large or smaller non-magical item and animate it. The animate item uses the Thaumaturgic Animation stat block, which uses your proficiency bonus (PB). The item is friendly to you and your companions and obeys your commands.

It lives for 1 hour, until it is reduced to 0 hit points, or until you die. Whenever you animate an object, choose a damage type listed in its Infused Essence trait.

In combat, the item shares your initiative count, but it takes its turn immediately after yours. It can move and use its reaction on its own, but the only action it takes on its turn is the Dodge action, unless you take a bonus action on your turn to command it to take another action. That action can be one in its stat block or some other action. If you are incapacitated, the item can take any action of its choice, not just Dodge.

When you use your Alter Objects feature, you can alter the object without touching it.

You can have only one item animated by this feature at a time; if you use this action and already have a thaumaturgic animation from this feature, the first one immediately becomes inanimate. #### Potent Thaumaturgy Starting at 8th level, you add your Wisdom modifier to the damage you deal with any thaumaturge cantrip. #### Psychometry Starting at 17th level, you can call up visions of the past that relate to an object you hold or your immediate surroundings. You spend at least 1 minute in meditation while focusing on the item and the Weave around it, then receive dreamlike, shadowy glimpses of recent events. You can meditate in this way for a number of minutes equal to your Wisdom score (a minimum of 1) and must maintain concentration during that time, as if you were casting a spell.

Once you use this feature, you can't use it again until you finish a short or long rest.

***Object Reading.*** Holding an object as you meditate, you can see visions of the object's previous owner. After meditating for 1 minute, you learn how the owner acquired and lost the object, as well as the most recent significant event involving the object and that owner. If the object was owned by another creature in the recent past (within a number of days equal to your Wisdom score), you can spend 1 additional minute for each owner to learn the same information about that creature.

***Area Reading.*** As you meditate, you see visions of recent events in your immediate vicinity (a room, street, tunnel, clearing, or the like, up to a 50-foot cube), going back a number of days equal to your Wisdom score. For each minute you meditate, you learn about one significant event, beginning with the most recent. Significant events typically involve powerful emotions, such as battles and betrayals, marriages and murders, births, and funerals. However, they might also include more mundane events that are nevertheless important in your current situation.

When you cast Minor Illusion, you can create both a sound and an image with a single casting of the spell. #### Wondrous Phenomenon: Reverie Domain At 2nd level, you can use your Wondrous Phenomenon to charm your foes with lucid dreams.

As an action, you can create an esoteric symbol at a point you can see within 30 feet of you. Creatures within 20 feet of the symbol must make a Wisdom saving throw, and on a failed save they become charmed for up to 1 minute or until you lose your concentration (as if you were concentrating on a spell), they take damage, or someone uses their action to shake or slap them out of this stupor. Creatures that are immune to being charmed or are immune to magical spells and effects that require them to dream automatically pass their saving throw.

Creatures that become charmed in this manner undergo one additional effect of your choice: - The creature drops whatever it’s holding and its speed becomes 0.

- The creature has disadvantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks made to perceive any creature other than you until the spell ends or until the target can no longer hear you.

- The creature is incapacitated due to being fully invested in the dream.

#### Sweet Dreams Starting at 6th level, you can provide soothing dreams to others while they rest, healing their minds and bodies. During a short or long rest, you can invoke the power of the Weave to aid your respite. At the start of the rest, you touch a point in space to create an esoteric symbol there, and an invisible, 30-foot-radius sphere of magic appears, centered on that point. Total cover blocks the sphere. The sphere vanishes at the end of the rest or when you leave the sphere.

When you and your allies finish your rest, you all receive 1 temporary hit point for each hit die rolled and you can end one disease or condition afflicting you or your allies as dictated by the *lesser restoration* spell.

#### Thaumaturgic Strikes At 8th level, you gain the ability to infuse your weapon strikes with psychic energy. Once on each of your turns when you hit a creature with a weapon attack, you can cause the attack to deal an extra 1d8 psychic damage to the target. When you reach 14th level, the extra damage increases to 2d8.

#### Pipe Dreams At 17th level, the effects of your Wondrous Phenomenon: Reverie Domain feature now work when the creatures are within 60 feet of the symbol. Moreover, your Sweet Dreams feature gives you and your allies 4 temporary hit points for each die rolled and you can reduce exhaustion by one level or end one of the effects dictated by the *greater restoration* spell. \page

### Cabal of The Third Eye Many people look to the past for the answers to life's issues, but thaumaturges of the Cabal of The Third Eye look to the future. A cabal full of diviners and soothsayers, these thaumaturges use the flow of magic from the Weave to augment their senses, letting them sense the future around them and respond accordingly. You have advantage on Dexterity saving throws against effects that you can see, such as traps and spells. To gain this benefit, you can't be blinded, deafened, or incapacitated. #### Wondrous Phenomenon: Tamper With Fate Starting at 2nd level, you can use your Wondrous Phenomenon to tamper with time, changing the fate of an outcome.

As an action, you create an esoteric symbol in the air around you that lasts for up to 1 minute. Roll one d6 and record the number rolled. You can use your reaction to add or subtract the number from this foretelling roll to any attack roll, saving throw, or ability check made by you or a creature that you can see within 30 feet of you. You must choose to do so before the roll, and you can tamper with a roll in this way only once per turn. #### Awakening of the Third Eye At 6th level, you become remarkably adept at using magic to sense and manipulate the world around you.

If you cast a cabal spell using a spell slot of 1st level or higher, you can change the spell's casting time to 1 bonus action for this casting, provided the spell's casting time is normally 1 action.

You can use this feature a number of times equal to your Wisdom modifier (minimum of once), and you regain all expended uses of it when you finish a long rest.

#### Potent Thaumaturgy Starting at 8th level, you add your Wisdom modifier to the damage you deal with any thaumaturge cantrip. #### Improved Tamper With Fate Starting at 17th level, you can roll two dice when you use Tamper With Fate. Additionally, your d6 becomes a d8. ### Cabal of the World There is a lot of magic within the lands of the Dernwilds. When you are attacked by a creature within 30 feet of you that you can see, you can use your reaction to impose disadvantage on the attack roll, causing light to flare before the attacker before it hits or misses. An attacker that can't be blinded is immune to this feature. You can use this feature a number of times equal to your Wisdom modifier (a minimum of once). You regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest. #### Wondrous Phenomenon: Eclipse Starting at 2nd level, you can use your Wondrous Phenomenon to harness the light and shadow of the celestial bodies and heal allies or hinder your foes. As an action, you create an esoteric symbol in the air around you, and a sphere of bright light or magical darkness (your choice) emanates from you. The sphere is centered on you, has a 20-foot radius, is filled with bright light or magical darkness, moves with you, and lasts for 1 minute or until you are incapacitated or die. You are immune to being blinded by the light or darkness of this sphere. Whenever a creature (including you) ends its turn in the sphere, you can give that creature one of these effects: - You grant it temporary hit points equal to 1d6 plus your thaumaturge level. - It takes an amount of radiant damage equal to 1d6 plus your thaumaturge level.

#### Welkin Child Starting at 6th level, you can draw on the mystical power of the firmament to lift yourself into the air. As a bonus action when you are in daylight or moonlight, you can magically give yourself a flying speed equal to your walking speed for 1 minute. You can use this bonus action a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, and you regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest. #### Potent Thaumaturgy Starting at 8th level, you add your Wisdom modifier to the damage you deal with any thaumaturge cantrip.

#### Spelunker's Knowledge When you enter a cave or sinkhole, you can correctly ascertain how it formed and determine when it appeared. In addition, you can determine the monetary value of fossils or crystals more than a century old. #### Suggested Characteristics Few spelunkers can resist the lure of an unexplored cave, particularly if such a site is the source of legends or is rumored to contain the treasures and relics of old underground strongholds. Some spelunkers explore for wealth or fame, while others consider it their calling to illuminate the past or understand the world's resources from falling into the wrong hands. Whatever their motivations, spelunkers combine the qualities of a scrappy historian with the innate call to exploration of a cave-exploring potholer. \page

This section serves as a brief introduction to all three of them. ## Zammia Tasalui Although their historical name is a reference to the many wars that were fought on the sandy soil of the land, Zammia Tasalui has managed to improve their reputation with the people of the Dernwilds. Starting as an agrarian society in the savannas, people of the region began to flock there for the unique biodiversity and flat terrain that existed in the area known as the Tuchiuscler. The sands of the nearby desert have rare smatterings of copper and tin deposits, and it is the presence of these deposits that ultimately led to a history of warring periods in the area. These deposits are why the city-state is known by another name, the Redsmiths' Refuge.

Zammia Tasalui is also home to the largest trading hub of the Dernwilds, the Hase dun Daktacommoirce (also known as hil’Hase). Common items are easy to find in these parts, but people mainly come here for the rare goods that can only be found here. They fetch quite a pretty penny, but they will have wares for those who have ploch.

## Talmhí-on-Uirós Zammia Tasalui's neighbor, Talmhí-on-Uirós, is known for its forests and many rivers. The city-state is predominately run by and inhabited by forest and wetland elves, and its main export is wood. One would expect that in a heavily wooded area like the Dernwilds, most trees would be easy to access for life, but that couldn't be much farther from the truth. Rather than cut down most of the lumber of the many rainforests, people from other city-states rely on lumber from Talmhí-on-Uirósto build —so much so that the biggest professions most people pursue are the lumber and architecture industries. \page

The trees grow with great speed and in turn, so does the bamboo. Aside from lumber, though, Talmhí-on-Uirós is also known for its maritime goods during the dry season. Droughts are common in other areas, but the people of Talmhí-on-Uirós have a culture that surrounds the flow of water. The calmer waters on the shores and a large amount of underground freshwater aquifers make it easy for people to subsist with great ease, collecting clean drinking water and a large variety of seafood. ## Burishten Burishten, also known as the Ancestral Home, is considered to be the area where the gods used to live. After they died, however, the people of Burishten worked with the thaumaturges who would give them aid, helping to form the economy into a predominately agrarian one. Their government works very closely with a group of thaumaturges known as the Eight Cardinals. Some people question the existence of the thaumaturges here due to the extensiveness of their influence, but no one really knows what they do. What they do know is that their work helps run the city-state and helps their lives flourish, so at the very least they respect them even if they don't understand them.

Even though the lands in and around Burishten are filled with a lot of caves, some of them seem to be closed off to public access. It's not really clear if this is a law or just a social faux pas, but the people of Burishten seem to all agree that it is best to leave some of those mines alone. Maybe there's a secret about the gods or the thaumaturges down there—or maybe there's just a monster down there since it seems like anyone who does sneak off into them never is seen again. > ##### One Last Tidbit > This document should more or less be everything you'll need to know, but if there's something I've missed or something you want to be clarified, **ask me**! > > The last page of this document will be a map of the Dernwilds, so feel free to peruse through that at your leisure. Certain feats specific to the campaign world are available, whereas other ones you may know from other campaigns do not exist. A more comprehensive list of feats will be provided on Worldanvil at a later time, but for the time being this article will feature one of the feats specific to the campaign, Tamer.

### Tamer You master the techniques needed to train and handle animals. You gain the following benefits: - Increase your Wisdom score by 1, to a maximum of 20. - You gain proficiency in the Animal Handling skill. If you are already proficient in the skill, you add double your proficiency bonus to checks you make with it. - You can use a bonus action on your turn to command one friendly beast within 60 feet of you that can hear and understand you and that isn’t currently following the command of someone else. You can issue a general command to the beast that lasts for 1 minute, such as to keep watch of a particular area. The beast is not trained to fight alongside you in combat and will stay out of the fray, but otherwise it will follow the command to the best of its ability. The command must be worded in such a manner as to make the course of action sound reasonable. Asking the creature, stab itself, throw itself onto a spear, immolate itself, or do some other obviously harmful act will cause your standing with the beast to decrease. \page
