# The Calendar of Harptos

The Calendar of Harptos is the calendar used across most of Faerûn, the continent where most of the campaign occurs. It was created by the wizard Harptos of Kaalinth, and is split into 12 months, each lasting three tendays. There are an additional five days that fall between months, bringing the total number of days in most years to 365. Every fourth year had an additional day added, known as Shieldmeet, the equivalent of a leap year day. The wizard Harptos also designed a zodiac, based on the most prominent constellation in night sky for each month. Rather than having the five extra days "borrow" a constellation from a neighboring month, they have their own signs related to the most brilliant star in the night sky in those days. Shieldmeet is the exception to this, as it uses the sign of the Owl, taken from the following month of Eleasias. Equinoxes and Solstices were major holidays, celebrated differently by different races, realms, and religions.
