\page # Hotel Zirapha ___ *He comes for you when you're asleep.* ___ *He comes to drag you to the deep.* ___ *Even in the waking hour,* ___ *none are match for Zirapha’s power.* ___ You open your eyes to find yourself in an old hotel room, alone. There are no windows, only peeling wallpaper. You have no recollection of how you got here, or how long it has been. All you know is that something is very, very wrong. The people here are pale and unlively. They stumble about like zombies, focusing only on trivial, confused obsessions, if anything at all. There don't appear to be any exits, or really any connection to the outside world. You find your own grasp on reality slipping, as your life before becomes blurrier and blurrier in your mind. ___ That guy with the giraffe head isn't helping either. ### What Exactly Am I Getting Myself Into? This is somewhere between an escape room and a homebrew adventure for the role-playing game *Dungeons and Dragons Fifth Edition*. In particular, this is a one-shot adventure made to be played in a single sitting. It should take somewhere between three and five hours. As written in this guide, everything should be balanced for a four-player party of level 5 adventurers, however there is considerable flexibility given the open nature of the module. ### How do I use this module? This document will provide an overview of the main story points and the locations your players may find themselves in for this adventure. In particular this module is broken into four parts. 1. The Introduction: How to set up the adventure and have your players introduce their characters. 2. General Rules: The general rules for how the players will interact with their environment and its primary antagonist, Zirapha. 3. The Casino: An overview of all the main locations the players will be able to explore for most of the adventure. 4. The Mystery: A point-by-point outline of the story points the players will have to figure out in order to escape Zirapha's thrall and successfully complete the module. Bolded words refer to items, maps, or non-playable characters (NPCs) whose information can be found outside of the main text. When your players come across new items, information will be included in info boxes near the relevant section. However, in the interest of space, maps and stat blocks for all the NPCs are included at the end of this document rather than interspersed within the text. Some parts of this module require playing cards and a grid to mark locations. Although these components are not required, they are recommended. ## Introduction Your first player character wakes up in an old, broken-down hotel room. There are no windows, only cracked and peeling wallpaper. The carpet is musty, as is the very bed they were sleeping in. A vent opens up on the wall, but there doesn't seem to be much air flow. More terrifying, they are not able to remember how they got here. They can remember who they are, and most details of their life, but it is unclear where exactly their memories cut off. It could have been days, it could have been months. Everything in the past feels vague and fuzzy. Have the player introduce their character at whatever level of detail they feel necessary. Then ask them what their first reaction is to waking up in this situation. Once they have entered the hallway, move on to the next player. Players who arrive late to the session can be added in at any time using this method. In addition to waking up with their personal items by their bed, each player finds **starting items** in their room that they do not recognize as their own. * All players start with 100 gold pieces (GP). * Player 1 will find a bag of 3-5 **silver knives** was well as a vial of **greek fire**. * Player 2 will find 2 **silver knives** with their own belongings as well as a **health potion**. * Player 3 will find a bag of ~10 **wooden stakes** as well as a vial of **holy water**. * Player 4 will find a **stick of dynamite**. * Any additional players will simply find an assortment of **silver knives** and **wooden stakes**. When they (presumably) meet in the hallway, the player characters will not recognize each other, but they might be inclined to join forces in light of their shared predicament. This is not required. The rest of this module will be written assuming the party operates as a group, but it is also very flexible should they choose to split up and pursue their own objectives.

Creatures take 1d6 damage for every turn that they are on fire. Greek fire is hard to put out, but can be extinguished by the koi pond or Zirapha’s power. Will burn out after 5 minutes unless it continues to catch on something. Bottle can be turned into a >molotov cocktail that deals 3d6 + 3 damage to all creatures within 15ft (also sets them on fire). >#### Health Potion > Restores 2d8 +4 hit points. Normally would taste like cherry, but things don't seem as vivid here for some reason. >#### Wooden Stakes > One-handed, range 5ft., 1d6 piercing. >#### Holy Water > About 1 cup's worth of blessed H2O. Maybe useful against demons? >#### Dynamite > "Controlled" explosive with fuse. Deals 3d8 + 4 fire damage to all creatures within 15ft. The other rooms in the hallway may be worthy of further inquiry, but that will all be covered in the **casino** section of this module. For now all that stands out will be that a few of the doors are open and that one is covered in blue jelly. They will likely focus on the end of the hallway where it opens up into the larger area of the main hall. The main hall is indeed a sight to behold, as the party will discover when they step inside. Rows of slot machines sprawl like a cemetary on either side. Across from the hallway is a koi pond with a bridge leading over to the front desk. Behind the poker table are massive cages containing a variety of exotic creatures, including a massive golden dragon. In the middle of the hall, on a podium with a light shining down, are two guillotines about six feet across from each other, with a lever in the middle and to the side. A few things seem off as well. There is water dripping from a crack way up in the ceiling. Here again there are no windows in sight. The only source of daylight are the doors leading out to the racetrack. The people are from a variety of races and creeds, but none seem particularly lively. They are unusually pale, either fixated at their given location or walking around from place to place. The exception are the **guards**, skeletons with the skulls of horses holding glaives. They remain perfectly still, not even turning their heads as people walk by. Even stranger is the creature that comes up to greet the party as soon as they step out of the hallway. His body is that of a skeleton with bones of silver. Only his feet end in hooves and his head is the skull of a giraffe. His proportions are off as well, with long, gangly limbs and unusually long fingers. He wears a top hat and a suit jacket, with silver angel-like wings protruding out of the back. This is **Zirapha**. Zirapha greets the party as they approach, stretching out his neck and arms such that they are elongated. With the personality of a true showman he introduces himself and assures them they will enjoy their stay. The players will likely have further questions for Zirapha, for which he likely will not give clear answers. * If they ask where they are, he will simply say the casino. * If they ask about who or what exactly he is, he will tell them not to worry about it. * The first time they ask to leave he will direct them over to reception. After that, he will offer to make bets to set them free. See the next section for how that will work. From here, the players should be free to explore the casino, solving the mystery as they choose. The next section will outline the general rules for how this will work. ## General Rules ### Dying in the Casino When a player dies in the casino, they will wake up in their room an undisclosed amount of time later. The same rule applies for any of the NPC guests in the hotel. If only some of the player characters die at a given time, they will wake up whenever is narratively expedient. If that is difficult to ascertain then a one hour delay should be sufficient. While in the casino, the players are unable to take a short or long rest, even in death. They simply find themselves unable to feel refreshed. ### Zirapha While in the hotel, Zirapha can at any time touch a creature to instantly kill them. Similarly, any creature who touches Zirapha (not his clothing) will instantly drop dead. A player under attack by Zirapha can attempt a DC 18 dexterity saving throw to evade the reach of his elongated fingers, but even on a success he will continue to chase them on all fours at a speed of 60ft. Generally speaking, he will kill a player if they attack him or if he catches them trying to escape or plot against him. Zirapha also has the following abilities. * Zirapaha is immune to all conditional effects. * Zirapha can elongate his neck and limbs at will. He may use this to observe the party from around corners. * Zirapha can rotate his head and any other skeletal body part a full 360 degrees. * Zirapha can give or take life from plants by pointing at them. * Zirapha can extinguish or reignite flames by pointing at them. * Zirapha does not require oxygen, food, or water. * Zirapha can appear anywhere as long as no party member is already observing him. \page * Zirapha cannot be killed while in the hotel, with the exception of his one weakness revealed towards the end of the module. Holy water and the like are simply false hopes. ___ Players should *not* be told the extent of Zirapha's abilities up-front. They should learn them as they are employed during the adventure. ### The Guards The main hall of the casino has several guards standing on duty. The place is not exactly swarming with them, but there is at least one for every major area. Most of the time they will be standing perfectly still, as though they really were just (horse-headed) skeletons. But if they see the party trying to escape or cause havoc, they will leap into action. The primary function of the guards is to alert Zirapha to what the party is doing. They have the ability to let out a silent (to others) wail that will call him over from wherever he currently is. This does not mean they will hesitate to engage in combat, however. If the players are caught too many times trying to escape, they will each wake up with a single guard standing over their bed. This guard will follow them around until it is killed or Zirapha is defeated. ### Making a Bet Once the party makes it clear they aren't willing to go along with the current situation, Zirapha will give an open invitation to gamble with him for their freedom. His conditions are simple. * A single member of the party will face off with him in the bet. * The player making the bet can choose from any of the casino games to play against Zirapha. They can also propose a bet on something less structured, so long as Zirapha approves. * If the player wins, Zirapha will allow the entire party to go free. He will not make it clear what exactly this entails, but he assures them it will actually mean escaping his thrall. * If Zirapha wins, he will get an organ from the player character who made the bet. The organ he requests is chosen from the **organ table** either at random or at your discretion. ___ Zirapha is a god of chance, and as such, he will always win. When playing poker, he will always get a royal flush. When playing blackjack, he will always get 21. And so on. If you are running this module in-person, it may be necessary to prepare his hands ahead of time for the card games. More specific instructions for each game are given when they are presented in the next section. When the player who made the bet inevitably loses, the organ they lost will disappear from their body. This organ will *not* return if they die and wake up again, nor will it be present when they escape the casino. The given penalty is final.

Some are essential for solving the mystery and escaping the casino, while others are not. If a location is important to the main story, its role will be discussed in the next section. ## *The Hallway* There are many hotel rooms in the hallway, which seems to stretch on endlessly in the direction opposite the main hall. There are several locations that stand out in particular. ### The Vents The easiest way to access the vents would be through one of the hotel rooms where no one is looking. They are, however, present throughout the casino at large. A DC 12 strength check is required to pull off the vent cover, but once it is removed, they are wide enough for a small or medium creature to crawl through. \page The vents can be used to travel short distances, such as from one hotel room to the next. However if the party relies on them too much to get around or tries to use them to find a way out, things will start to go wrong. First the layout of the ventilation system will grow more and more nonsensical, until there is no correlation between where they entered and where it leads them. Second, they will eventually run into the grinning giraffe-skull face of Zirapha, who has taken to crawling through the vents as well. When this happens he will kill them immediatly. Dexterity saving throws to avoid his deadly touch have disadvantage while in the vents. ### The Jelly Door This door is covered in blue jelly that matches the jar on Gabriel's (see slot machines) belt. The jelly makes the handle so slippery that no one will be able to grasp it, not even with a glove or a cloth. There are several solutions that your party might try. * A spellcaster may use mage hand to try to grasp the handle. Unfortunately the jelly is still too slippery for this to work. * A player can try to eat the jelly. Unfortunately the jelly is so slippery the player will still fall over somehow and take 1d4 bludgeoning damage. * If a player has the ability to teleport by some means, they can use this to enter the room. * Explosives can be used to blow down the door. The explosives cannot be attached to the door, of course. This also might attract the attention of Zirapha. * The party can find a way to hose down the door. When this happens, the hallway will then be very slippery, and a DC 15 acrobatics check will be required to avoid falling over and taking 1d4 damage. * A player can enter the room through the vents, entering from an adjacent room. If they spend too long in the vents, however, they will still run into Zirapha. ___ Importantly, the party should be rewarded for coming up with their own creative solutions as well. There are several notable things inside the room itself. Inside the open closet, someone has scratched *The Goddamn Koi Pond* into the wallpaper inside. There is also a briefcase sitting on the bed, locked with an X-shaped keyhole. The briefcase can only be opened with the matching key. If the players are able to find the key and open the briefcase, they will find several useful things inside, including the **weakness list**, the **god list**, the **symbol code** and the **suitcase items**. There is also a map of an unknown region with the town of *Willow's Springs* circled in ink, as well as a missing person poster for a halfling named Gerard Begard. Finally, one note lists the names of the party members themselves, without any further explanation. ``` ```

\page ### Open Door #1 In this room is a human sitting at the end of the bed. They look over as the party walks in, but are otherwise non-reactive. Their clothes are being eaten by moths and they have sunk deep into the mattress. They will not protest if any of the players decide to take their bag of 50GP. ### Open Door #2 The carpet in this room is loose, such that the first player to walk in will trip and must make a DC 14 performance check to avoid looking stupid while falling. Beneath the carpet, carved into the floorboards, is an outline of the racetrack outside as well as arrows detailing a plan to escape on the horses. Scratched on the walls are the names of the room's occupant's family members, written in elvish. The **elf items** are also sitting by the bed. >### Elf Items >#### Breathing Bubble > Allows one to breath underwater. >#### Battle Boomerang > One-handed, range 50ft, 1d12 + 1 slashing. Can be used as both a melee and ranged weapon. When thrown, will return to the user.
### Open Door #3 (The Beholder's Lair) The owner of this room is not present when the party first enters, but he is identified by the reading glasses with one giant lens and the christmas-type sweater with many sleeves. A large tunnel is dug into the side of the wall, which appears to have been carved through solid rock. It starts at about ten feet across, but gets slightly narrower as it continues on into darkness. Players wishing to explore the tunnel will require either darkvision or some portable source of light. After about thirty minutes of walking, the tunnel makes a sudden stop. There is no indication of why it stops here, but the party is now faced with a solid barrier of rock. On their way back, they will find Zirapha standing in the middle of the tunnel, blocking their exit. He assumes (perhaps correctly) they were trying to escape the casino, and promptly kills them all. Also noteworthy in this room is the chest sitting next to the bed. It is held closed by a three-digit combination lock, the correct sequence for which is *616*. Inside is the **poem fragment**, the **chest items**, a bottle of bourbon, a picture of the beholder with his family, and a crown about the size of his head. While the party is still going through the chest, a gruff voice calls over from the doorway. The **beholder card-shark** demands an explanation for why the party is looking through his stuff. He won't be able to explain any of the items that refer to his outside life nor the tunnel he desperately dug ___ some time ago. Visibly distressed that he can't remember, he will channel his despair into rage and attack the party regardless of how they try to diffuse the situation.

## *The Main Hall* The main hall is primarily composed of one large room, with an indent for the reception area. Not only are the guards much more present here, Zirapha will often be seen dropping in on a game of poker or otherwise looking around. \page ### The Slot Machines The slot machines can be found all over, and they present numerous strange occurrences among their ranks. All around are pale figures mindlessly inserting gold coins into the machines and hitting the levers. Every time, at every machine, the result is always the same: skull, eye, heart. Two patrons in particular stand out. The first is a tortle sitting at a machine who appears to be missing her shell. Instead, she has an artificial one constructed out of ironwood. The artificial shell has a number of items sticking out including a broadsword and a thunder cannon. As well, she has a variety of potions and bags of materials on her belt, including a jar of blue jelly that matches the door in the hallway. This is **Gabriel**. She stops the party for a moment as they walk by, about to talk as though they were old friends. But before she can get a word out, she loses her train of thought and returns to the slot machine. Another notable character is a **dragonborn hoarder** stashing items in a hole in the wall behind a slot machine. He places a few odd trinkets inside the hole, looks around anxiously, and then goes off to find more. If the players look in the hole they will find it filled with junk, just a few odd coins, bits of torn-up carpeting, empty bottles, and so on. If the dragonborn catches anyone taking from the hole, he will stab them with a shard of glass in his hand. #### Playing the Slot Machines Gold coins are inserted one at a time. No matter what, the player will always get the same result as everyone else: skull, eye, heart. #### Playing Against Zirapha If a player wants to bet against Zirapha on the slot machines, the competition will be over who can get the best result. The player will always get skull, eye, heart, while Zirapha will always get three in a row. The symbols he gets in sequence will match the organ that the player is now about to lose. ### The Guillotines On a podium in the middle of the hall, lit up by a massive spotlight, two guillotines stand about six feet across from each other. A lever stands in the middle and off to the side. #### Playing the Guillotines Each of the two players place their head inside a guillotine so that their heads are pointed towards each other. As soon as someone pulls the lever on the side, one of the guillotines randomly falls, cutting off the head of the player inside. Generally speaking, most of the people present will not be willing to partake in a bet using the guillotines. #### Playing Against Zirapha The person playing against Zirapha will always be the one to have the blade fall on their neck. There is one story-based exception, listed in the next section of the module. ``` ``` ### Reception The reception area is the only part of the main hall that is somewhat secluded. Players must walk over the bridge crossing the koi pond in order to get to this area. When they do, they must make a DC 13 perception check in order to notice the X-shaped key sitting at the bottom of the pond, about fifteen feet down. If they are examining the pond closely and with deliberation, no check is needed. In order to retrieve the key, the party will have to do several things at once. 1. Find a way to breath underwater or get out of the pond quickly. 2. Ignore the swarm of koi fish harassing them as they swim. 3. Keep Zirapha and the guards from getting suspicious. ___ One koi fish in particular stands out based on its red color and its insistence on getting in the players faces. They would ___ do well not to retaliate however, because if the red fish feels threatened, it will turn into a blue **koi monster**. Reception itself is not a pleasant sight. The receptionist is actually a decomposing human body lying across the booth, surrounded by a swarm of flies. There is no entrance or exit. ### The Poker Table Compared to the rest of the hall, the poker table is quite a lively scene. The dealer is one of the guards, but the table is being run by a **beholder poker-shark**. He appears just like any other beholder, but is wearing a 1940s gangster type hat and is smoking a cigar. He speaks in a gruff but jovial voice, complaining that he has no real competition. This is undercut by the fact that several of his eyes have been removed with the sockets patched up. Also frequenting the table are an **elf** in adventurer's robes, looking pale and nearly lifeless and a **hobgoblin** in military garb who is fixated on the game as though in some kind of trance. Finally there is **Fitzgerald Fauntleroy McCapital**, a man in a fine suit and monocle who regards the party, as well as most people in the vicinity, with disgust. He does not shy away from snide remarks and pretentious elitism. #### Playing Poker The table plays a version of the game called Tejas Hold'em. All players start with three cards. A round of betting occurs, then a shared card is turned over. After another round of betting, a second shared card is turned over. The beholder poker-shark will typically set the tone, betting somewhere between 20-50GP depending on his hand. Fitzgerald Fauntleroy McCapital will typically be able to match his bets, whereas the other two NPCs won't be able to go over ~40GP at a time. #### Playing Against Zirapha For convenience it is best to make this a one-on-one game, but if multiple player characters want to take part, they can all bet an organ requested by Zirapha. Zirapha will always have the first three components of a royal flush in his personal cards, and the shared cards will always complete his set. \page ### The Animal Cages Although perhaps a magnificent sight from afar, up close it is clear these creatures have seen better days. A **thunderbird**, having long-ago given up hope to take flight, quietly sits on its perch. A **tricorn**, horns pointing out like a tripod, spends most of its time sleeping. Only the withering **ancient gold dragon** is intelligent enough to communicate with the party, and even he has difficulty maintaining a train of thought. Although he retains his antipathy towards Zirapha, he can't remember how long he’s been there, or how he got there in the first place. He only knows that there is no way to break out, not as long as Zirapha is in control. The cages are made out of reinforced steel and do not have any latches to open. The thunderbird's coop acts as a faraday cage, preventing its electricity from escaping. Although conventional explosives will not be strong enough to break the cages, greek fire does burn hot enough to melt the beams. As well, if the party can teleport the creatures or open a passage through by any other means, that is an option as well. If the creatures are freed they will wreck maximum havoc, but that will only work for a short-term distraction. Zirapha will use his touch to kill the creatures as well as the party. When they return to the main hall after waking up again, the creatures will all be returned to their cages. ### The Blackjack Table The blackjack table is not seeing very much action, with only the single guard acting as dealer and a single halfling taking part. He continually hits until he has gone bust, repeatedly throwing away a couple gold coins to start another round. This halfling is not as pale as most of the casino patrons but he is not very lucid either. If pushed, he will say that his name is **Gerard Begard**, and nothing more. #### Playing Blackjack Typically everyone is playing against the dealer, with everyone who achieves a higher score getting their gold coins doubled by the house. Everyone starts with two cards, and can choose to hit from there until they go bust (over 21) or decide to stop. Aces can be low or high, whatever is best. The dealer starts with one card face-up and one card hidden, and will hit until their cards total 17 or higher. Splitting is allowed if the player is familiar with the game. #### Playing against Zirapha Zirapha will always get exactly 21. If a player also gets 21, a new round is started to break the tie. ### The Bar The first thing the party will notice at the bar is the **bartender**, who is in fact a very large plant. With vines reaching up to the shelves and onto the table, it is able to serve multiple people at once. Although it does have the head of a venus fly trap, it is unable to speak, though it does understand everyone's orders. The top shelf behind the bar has several high-end drinks that cost 50GP a bottle. In the middle is liquor in a bottle made of jade that costs 300GP. Even among the high-end end stuff, it is the only one with a distinctive look. The rest of the drinks are free and the party can have as much as they like. However, after their second drink, they must make a DC 16 constitution saving throw to avoid being intoxicated. The rules for being intoxicated are listed below. While most of the bar patrons are faded and indifferent, the **goliath** sitting on one end is just the opposite. Easily offended, he will not hesitate to start a fight over almost nothing. In his anger state he starts muttering something about respect, but doesn't give a clear reason why he's so aggressive. If a player character gets into a fight with the goliath, he will mostly stick to unarmed strikes, not really looking to kill anyone. He has what look like brass knuckles on his fists, but he will not use them to activate his flame fist ability unless he is attacked by multiple people.

This must occur before the creature takes its action. ### The Racetrack The racetrack, accessible to the side of the main hall, will stand out as the only exit to the outside world. Indeed, it does appear to be outside. The sun is shining way up in the big blue sky, and the field behind the track stretches on for at least a few miles. The track itself is a less reassuring sight. **Mexicalan horses** are a special breed with sharp fangs that would almost be vampiric if not for the rows of jagged incisors that accompanied them. On the side of the track they are fed buckets of unidentifiable guts by the guards. Several of the riders are standing in the area as well. **Whipper Skipper** is a grung wearing a skipper's hat and holding a rapier, standing next to his partner, a **tabaxi rider** with a bandana over their face. There is also a **double-headed warforged** who appears to be a complete racing team. The players walking out of the casino will find themselves standing at the top of the stands, which are about the size of the bleachers in a small gymnasium. The viewers in the stands are not much more enthusiastic than anyone inside the building, but most will at least follow the races as they happen. If the players take a seat to watch a race, they may find that Zirapha has appeared sitting beside them, eating out of a popcorn bag filled with pale, dead eyes. #### Racing Betting on the races is a little different than betting on something else, as anyone placing bets must actually take part in the race, and they must bet on themselves. This means a much more lively competition but also a greater time investment. Each horse must have two riders, though exceptions can be made if uneven numbers of people are participating. The "regular" racers the players will be facing off against are the ones listed above, with Whipper Skipper and the tabaxi on one horse and the double-headed warforged on another. To run a race you will also need a grid and player markers, whether physical or online. Place a marker for each horse in the midpoint of the grid. The race will function like any other ___ combat, except that horses can only freely move horizontally, towards and away from their competitors. As well, the following rules apply. * Horses cannot be killed. Attacks will hit them as usual, but they will appear unaffected, almost like beating a dead—sorry. But seriously, they are vaguely corpse-like. * Each horse has its own initiative, and its riders can choose the order in which they attack. * When a character on a horse takes damage, the horse falls back 3 spaces. * A character on a horse can give up their turn to attempt a DC 16 animal handling check. On a success, the horse sprints forward 8 spaces. Only a failure, all characters on the horse fall off of it as it stumbles. They are then mauled to death by their own steed. * The race goes on for a total of 5 rounds, after which the horse in the lead wins the race. Although these rules have been tested and should provide some structure to the race, much will still be down to your discretion. If your players do something stupid, they should fall behind accordingly. If they pull off something clever, reward them with a lead. #### Racing Against Zirapha Zirapha's horse is the same as the rest of the Mexicalan breed, aside from the fact that it is a skeleton. Players racing against Zirapha will do ok at first, but eventually they will look down to see that their horse is rapidly aging. Eventually it has decomposed into nothing more than a pile of bones that promptly fall apart. Zirapha pulls up to the players, now lying on the ground, as they feel the organs they have wagered disappearing inside them. #### Escaping on the Horses Assuming the players have chosen to race against regular contenders, they will have little issue diverting their horses off of the tracks and making a break for it. They will continue across the landscape for about one hour before arriving at a large wall with the horizon depicted by the same peeling wallpaper like in the rest of the casino. Suddenly the light of the sun looks much more artificial. A compartment opens in the wall, and Zirapha sticks his head out with a wide grin and an elongated neck. Players must succeed on a DC 20 dexterity saving throw or be bitten in the neck and die instantly. ## The Mystery In order to solve the mystery behind Zirapha's weakness and escape the casino, the players will have to do the following things in sequence. * Find a way into the hotel room with the jelly door in order to get the briefcase. * Retrieve the X-shaped key from the koi pond in order to open the briefcase. \page * Use the symbol code in the briefcase to open the chest in the beholder's lair with the combination 616. * Use the poem fragment to determine Zirapha's weakness. ___ The final solution may be obvious, or it may take some time. The "Gaulish blade" refers to the guillotine (think France) and the "spirits jade" refers to the liquor in the jade bottle on the top shelf. This means the players must oil the guillotines with the jade liquor in order to defeat Zirapha. This itself will take a few steps. First, the party will need to find a way to oil the guillotines without attracting Zirapha's attention. Recall that they stand in the middle of the main hall with a spotlight shone on them, so this will require more than a stealth check. Some of the players may want to make a bet with Zirapha in order to make a distraction. Freeing the animals in the cages would also make a suitable commotion. Then someone will have to bet against Zirapha on the guillotines. ### The Final Round If he has no special reason to think he's been outwitted, Zirapha will agree to the bet. However, he has decided to up the stakes after all the party's previous misadventures. He says that if he wins this bet, he will take something a little more precious for the player in the other guillotine: their living, beating heart. He is still very confident that the game is rigged in his favor, to the point that your players should be doubting themselves. Zirapha extends his neck to fit in one guillotine while a party member puts themselves in the other. Another party member will have to pull the lever. When they do, there is a long pause. Then the blade falls on Zirapha, and his head is cut off. Zirapha's body falls limp. As his skull hits the ground it emits a horrific wail that strikes at something primal in the soul. The entire casino shakes violently, including the race track "outside". The guards fall apart, bones clattering to the ground. After about ten seconds, the skull falls quiet, and all is still. The crack in the ceiling has widened such that a person could perhaps find a way to squeeze through. Most people in the casino are still very non-reactive, even in light of what just happened. The exception would be Gabriel, the tortle who recognized the party, and the beholder, depending on whether he has yet woken up after his encounter with the party. Fitzgerald Fauntleroy McCapital is somewhat lucid, but he is unwilling to leave the comfort of the world he has grown used to. To finally escape the party will have to find some way to get up to the crack in the cieling. The gold dragon may be able to help, as well as the ring of anti-gravity. The beholder, also capable of flight, may be able to contribute, but it will take some serious convincing. The crack in the ceiling is a tight fit, and it doesn't get better. As the party crawls higher and higher, they find that they are eventually crawling through dirt. At the end they pull themselves out of the ground as though they had been buried alive. It is the middle of the night, and the party is now standing in a clearing a few miles from the town of Willow's Springs. They are all at full hit points, and all spell slots are replenished. The casino starts to feel like nothing more than a dream. ``` ``` ### The Final Battle At the very last second a large skeletal hand with elongated fingers reaches out of the dirt. A second follows as a **headless Zirapha** pulls himself out of the ground, visible from the waist up. His body is stretched out and elongated, his torso about the size of an elephant. His skeletal structure is no longer silver but solid bone. His suit jacket is nothing more than a few rags clinging to his ribs, and his wings look like that of a bird carcass on the side of a road. Zirapha makes one last scramble to drag the party back into the dirt. If the party decides to flee, he will continue to stretch out of the ground, quickly outpacing them. They will find themselves in a dreamlike scenario where as much as they try to run they cannot make any progress. This ends when Zirapha has fallen or the party once more lies in eternal slumber. If a character dies in this final battle, they do not wake up in the casino. ### In One Piece When Zirapha dies he smashes apart on the final hit, what's left intact slipping back down into the depths. A few moments later, Gabriel the tortle is pulling herself out of the dirt, assuming the party didn't take her with them. Gabriel is much more in focus now and she finally appears to remember the party. As she explains her story, the memories start to return to the rest of them as well. Gabriel came over to the town of Willow's Springs when she heard reports that people were starting to disappear. At the same time, the trickster god Zirapha was appearing in people's dreams, and a shadowy figure was often seen lurking in the night. Someone had even claimed that a family member was dragged under a bed by an elongated, skeletal arm, never to return. Knowing she would need backup, Gabriel sent word for each of the party members in order to put a team together. She knew them from a previous job, where they had succeeded in killing Karaan, a minor god of savagery. Unfortunately she was taken before any of them arrived, so she was unable to give proper warning. Zirapha most likely took the party sometime later when they finally arrived. Gabriel asks if they still have the list of gods from her suitcase. Taking it in her hands, she regards it with pride, and takes a quill from her belt to cross off Zirapha's name. "Well then." She says. If his finger lands on a space with a creature on it, (determined by die roll), he randomly takes a body part from them based on the organ table. This effect is permanent. If they have already lost this body part, randomly choose another.
