## Chapter 3.5 # Fablerise

#

F ablerise is a small Domain of Delight—roughly three square miles nestled in the forest of Thither. Yarnspinner only recently arrived in Thither and is unaware that he is intruding upon another archfey's territory.
## Running This Chapter In this optional chapter, the characters explore the thicket of Fablerise. They could be in search of a safe haven out of the reaches of the Hourglass Coven. In Fablerise, they might meet the kind archfey if Fablerise, Yarnspinner, who takes the form of a giant spider. Before your first game session in Fablerise, follow these steps to help make the players' experience as entertaining as possible: - Fablerise is ruled by Yarnspinner. Read his description and skim his stat block in appendix A. - Read this chapter in its entirety. ### Navigating Fablerise There is no map of Fablerise. Locations in Fablerise are described later in the chapter. While traversing the thorny maze of Fablerise, the characters may come across the giant tree whose roots make up the walls and tunnels of the thicket's maze. A group of shoe shining goblins try to trick passersby into taking their shoes. Further into the thicket is a spring where a vain merman poet and a few pixies rest. The pixies have a lost book that belongs to the archfey of the realm. The characters can find the archfey along with a familiar face in the small village of huts made of spider's silk. ### A Guide to Fablerise The borders of Fablerise are surrounded by a wall of living brambles that separates it from the rest of Thither. The wall is impassible and immune to all damage. Creatures that try to force their way through take 1d4 piercing damage and are pushed 5 feet away from the wall. The only way to enter the thicket is to have a guide who knows how to traverse the brambles safely. There are many ways for Characters to learn about Fablerise and how to enter it. Winterbow’s clan could have escaped to Fablerise and the centaur can inform the characters about it. Lamorna, the Unicorn at Wayward Pool, could task the characters in helping the residents of Thither take refuge in Fablerise while the hags are still in power. The characters may run into the ghostly image of Yarnspinner who is journeying outside his realm as he sleeps. This supplement includes Otto, the blink dog puppy, as an additional guide that can lead the characters from Thither to Fablerise along with an encounter on how to implement him. ## Features of Fablerise Fablerise is a vast thicket of thick roots, thorny vines, and sinuous creepers that weave together to form long tunnels, grand hallways, and enormous domes. It's a gloomy realm. A mushroom circle in the heart of the domain serves as a fey crossing, and one can travel more quickly through the thicket by whistling a tune while walking backward. ### Rules of Fablerise Fablerise does not apply by the same rules of conduct as the rest of Prismeer (see “Rules of Conduct” in chapter 2). The rule of Reciprocity is the same as it is in Prismeer, but there are two additional rules: ___ - **Rule of Permission.** You must always ask for something and be approved before you can proceed with your actions. It is considered rude to give something to a creature without their approval or to show up unannounced. Anything taken with permission does not need to be reciprocated with a gift. Words and stories can be shared without need for permission. - **Rule of Attention.** You must listen to every word a friend, an enemy, or a stranger has to say before you can reply. You do not need to agree with them, but to ignore or interrupt someone is a breach of edicate. It is fine to ask someone to repeat themselves, though they need not comply. The price for breaking these rules is fairly simple: the creature must share a secret or story about themselves. Yarnspinner is not one for confrontation and rather encourages the spread of knowledge and imagination. Yarnspinner is very upfront with these rules and spins signs made of webs explaining them in full. ### Universal Understanding Yarnspinner is a storyteller and a purveyor of knowledge. Thus, he has granted the gift of understanding to anyone in Fablerise to make it easier to communicate and listen to stories. Any creature in Fablerise gains the benefits of the _tongues_ spell. Animals and tiny critters are among Yarnspinner’s favorite to read stories to. He has granted such creatures in Fablerise to be magically awakened. Any beast in Fablerise gains an Intelligence of 10 and the ability to speak Common and Sylven. If the beast leaves Fablerise, these benefits fade in 1d8 hours, unless the _awaken_ spell is cast on it.

\page ### Labyrinthine Paths In Fablerise it is easy to get lost. The long branching paths can become dark and claustrophobic for those that rush through it, but those that take in the scenery will find light shining through the weave of roots and moss blooming on the ground. The maze of brambles is misleading, as all paths lead to the same locations. Unless a creature knows where they want to end up, the thicket spits them out at a random location. Beasts are immune to this effect and can pass through the walls of the maze freely. When the characters travel through the thicket, they must succeed on a DC 15 Wisdom (Survival) check at the end of each hour. A character makes this check with disadvantage while traveling at a fast pace. On a successful check, They appear in one of the locations in Fablerise, as described later in the chapter. On a failed check, they become lost in the maze. If a character fails three checks before succeeding once, they are spit out into a random location in Fablerise (other than Storycircle) and gain a level of exhaustion. Characters can quickly travel through the thicket if they whistle while walking backwards. Doing so reduces the DC of the Wisdom (Survival) check to 10 and they don't gain a level of exhaustion from failing three checks. If the characters know where they want to go, they automatically succeed on the roll and end up in the desired location. ### Additional Encounter in Thither If you are interested in including a guide from Thither to Fablerise, consider adding the following encounter. #### Dog in a Handbasket Before the characters arrive at Little Oak, the characters stumble across Bobi, one of The Getaway Gang members carrying a basket through the woods. Bobi is a boisterous male dwarf growing his first whiskers. Any character who succeeds on a DC 13 Wisdom (Perception) check notices that the basket is moving as if something is inside of it. If the characters approach Bobi or announce their presence, he drops the basket and runs away. The basket is locked, but can easily be opened from the outside with no additional check. Inside the basket is Otto, a **blink dog puppy** (see the accompanying stat block). Additional roleplaying notes for Otto are found in appendix B. He has 2 hit points and teleports as soon as he can see outside the basket. Otto tries to search for any members of The Getaway Gang, but finding none he will turn his attention to the characters and attempt to communicate with them. If the characters are able to understand him, he shares the following information: * “While I was trying to find my pack, I was captured by a bunch of kids who took me to their walking treehouse.” * “The kids’ leader has a pet displacer beast kitten. When I attacked it they put me in a basket.” * "In the forests of Thither is a bramble thicket known as Fablerise. It is a domain of the archfey Yarnspinner, a giant storytelling spider.” Otto knows the way to Fablerise and how to enter the bramble wall, although he will only show the way if the characters go to Little Oak and get an apology from the Getaway Gang. Otto is able to sniff out the direction of Little Oak and can lead the characters to it. Blink dogs and displacer beasts have a long standing hatred for one another and Otto will try and attack Star unless a character can calm him down with a successful DC 10 Wisdom (Animal Handling) check. ### Arriving in Fablerise When the characters first arrive in Fablerise, read:

You enter a dense thicket made of bowed and woven roots forming tunnels. The thicket branches out into a maze of branching paths with no foreseeable end. Wisps of colored light illuminate the thicket.

While in Fablerise, creatures are magically able to understand each other and animals become awakened (see “Universal Understanding” earlier in the chapter). If the characters have Otto with them as their guide, he explains the rules of Fablerise to the characters. He also explains that it is easy to get lost in the tunnels. ## Locations in Fablerise The following encounters are tied to locations in Fablerise. There is no map of Fablerise. Move these locations as needed to put them in the characters’ path. Ideally, you should run all three encounters in the following order before the characters arrive at Storycircle: ___ - **Tree Of Tales.** The characters encounter a group of mischievous goblins abusing the rules of the domain. - **Babbling Spring.** This spring is home to an overly dramatic merman obsessed with his own poetry. The characters can listen to his nonsense to gain insight into the dragon who roams Prismeer.

- **Gossamer Huts.** The final encounter takes the characters to a small village of spider web huts where they can rest and meet the familiar face of Ellywick Tumblestrum. ### Tree of Tales When the characters arrive at Tree of Tales, read:

An enormous dome made out of twisted roots and climbing vegetation emerges from the tunnels. Threads of sunlight peak through the gaps in the roof and moss grows lush on the ground. In the center, grows a giant twisted tree draped with spider webs. Constant Chattering from two goblins echo in the room. Before you can do anything, a third comes up to you.

The third goblin is Ollie Oxenfree (neutral, noncombatant), a child goblin with a missing tooth. He comes up to the characters and asks “Oi, ‘ello. May I ‘ave your shoes?”. Ollie holds up a shoe shining brush and polish. If any of the characters agree, Ollie will take their shoes from them and bring them over to the other goblins. Additional roleplaying notes for Ollie are found in appendix B. Ollie is an impressionable child and doesn’t understand the extent of what he is doing. He follows the orders of his two “dads”, Phil and Buster. Phil and Buster are two **goblins** who have taken Ollie in to assist with their crimes. While Ollie asks ill-informed travelers for their shoes, Phil and Buster tell a never ending story to prevent Library, the Tree of Tales from speaking up in accordance with the Rule of Attention (see “Rules of Fablerise”).

\page #### Tree of Tales The twisted tree in the center of the dome is the Tree of Tales named Library. Library uses the **treant** stat block, except it is gargantuan in size, unable to move, and can cast the _comprehend languages_ and _dancing lights_ spells at will; requiring no material components. Additional roleplaying notes for Library are found in appendix B. If Library is reduced to 0 hit points, the treant becomes a nonmagical tree that is immune to all damage for 1d8 days. During this time, her leaves also become nonmagical. After such time has passed, Library regains all hit points with no memory of what had happened. Library’s roots make up walls and tunnels throughout Fablerise. In a hollow cavity in the tree’s trunk is a large book in which it speaks from. The book cannot be removed and acts as part of its body. Any creature who succeeds on a DC 12 Wisdom (Perception) check notices that there is writing on its leaves. If the adventurers show up without a guide, Library condemns them for showing up unannounced (see “Rules of Fablerise” earlier in the chapter). Despite breaking the rules, Library is able to forgive the characters actions due to the mass amounts of creatures showing up in Fablerise. It provides the following reliable information: * Yarnspinner is an archfey who came to this area to set up a Domain of Delight (Yarnspinner nor Library know about Prismeer or the fact that they are on another Archfey’s territory) * Yarnspinner loves books and stories and reads to small critters everyday at Storycircle, a mushroom circle in the center of Fablerise. * When Yarnspinner is sleeping, he creates a ghostly form of himself that Roams around Fablerise. * To quickly traverse through the forest, all you have to do is whistle a tune while walking backwards. If the characters ask about Library’s leaves, it says that its leaves are magical and if the characters ask nicely, it will give one to them. Afterwards, if a character shares a story with Library, it will give a leaf as thanks. Library will only give a creature one leaf within a 24 hour period. If a creature acquires more than one leaf, all leaves after the first instantly die and become unusable. Library’s leaves detail a spell and a fictional tale using the spell. These leaves act as spell scrolls, although if the leaf is not used within 3 days, the leaf dies and becomes unusable. A leaf can be used by any creature, even if the spell is not on their spell list, although all other rules for casting spell scrolls still apply. When a leaf is picked, roll on the Spell Leaf table to determine what spell and tale the leaf holds.

\page ### Babbling Spring When the characters arrive at Babbling Spring, read:

The intertwined roots open up to reveal a spring. Waterfalls melodically trill calming sounds. Rainbows hang in the air as light shines through the mist of the pool. A few residents lounge in the spring. In the shallows, rests a merfolk in soliloquy. He stares down at his own reflection as he pontificates. On a dry cliff, a group of three pixies gather around a book much larger than them. They giggle as they tear out pages and watch them drift into the waters below.

The spring is 8 feet at its deepest. The waterfalls start 10 feet above the pool of water. The spring contains clear fresh water and has no magical properties. #### Merfolk Poet The **merfolk** is Jonquil (neutral good), an overly dramatic poet obsessed with his own reflection. He is unable to find a word to rhyme with “stream less traveled”. The word he is looking for is “unraveled”, although any rhyming word a character gives him (including made up ones) will spark his creativity. Additional roleplaying notes for Jonquil are found in appendix B. As a show of thanks, he reads a poem to them (See the “Jabberwocky” sidebar). Anyone who listens to the poem in its entirety gains a point of inspiration if they are able to. A character can also have advantage on any Intelligence (Nature) or Wisdom (Survival) check made when dealing with the jabberwock. #### Pixies On a dry rock next to a waterfall are three **pixies**. They rest, ripping pages out of a large book titled “The Witch Queen’s Cauldron”. A _detect magic_ spell reveals an aura of illusion magic around the book. The book has the _illusory script_ spell cast on it. To anyone other than Iggwilv and Yarnspinner, the book is about the false history of Iggwilv and how she rose to power written in Abyssal. A character can discern the information to be false with a successful DC 10 Intelligence (History) check. To Iggwilv and Yarnspinner, the book is about Zibilna and her domain of Prismeer, along with the poem for _Iggwilv’s Cauldron_ (See Chapter 5). The final page of the book is written in Common and reads “To Yarnspinner, from Zybilna”. The book belongs to Yarnspinner, who lost it recently in the thicket. The pixies found the lost book somewhere in the thicket. They are unable to read it and have found fun ripping out the pages and watching them flow into the water. The pixies claim that they own the book and they can do whatever they want with it. \page ### Gossamer Huts When the characters arrive at Gossamer Huts, read:

In a large clearing, sparse with trees, are a collection of small huts made out of webbing. Each gossamer hut is about the size of a shed and has a name spelled out on a spider web outside the quant housing. One of the larger huts in back comically grows and shrinks with the sound of snoring. Several animals and small critters frolic in the field, dancing to the music of a lute.

Each hut is small enough to fit into a 10-foot cube. The hut comes with a closable door and a comfortable bed made of webbing, sized for a Tiny, Small, or Medium creature. In the larger hut is **Yarnspinner** (see appendix A), who is fast asleep. A message made of spider’s web hangs above the hut and reads:

_Yarnspinner’s abode_ _Do not disturb_

The clearing is home to many creatures that take refuge in Fablerise. Yarnspinner is too kind to turn anyone down who needs a place to stay. Around the clearing are a large number of awakened beasts such as rabbits, squirrels, foxes, badgers, skunks, weasels mice, birds, and deer. The animals welcome the characters if approached and flee if attacked. The music comes from the bard, Ellywick Tumblestrum. The characters may have met Tumblestrum at the Carnival in Chapter 1. She sits on a bench made of twisting vines playing her lute for the animals. If approached she says, “Fancy seeing you here? You’re earlier than expected.” ``` ``` Thumblestrum stays enigmatic when talking to the characters, revealing as little about herself as possible. She tries to get information about the accomplishments the characters have achieved in Prismeer to see if they are on track. If the characters missed anything in their time in Hither, she will hit a sour note and inform them that they have missed some things along the way, and will give a hint on how or where to find it. If the characters missed the unicorn horn or do not know where to find it, Tumblestrum can cryptically tell them in which realm it is located in, as she does not know the exact location herself. Tumblestrum is in Fablerise to listen to stories at Storycircle when Yarnspinner wakes up. She says that Yarnspinner knows more than even he realizes and it may be important for the Characters to listen.

#### Coming into the Parlor A ghostly version of Yarnspinner comes skittering from the thicket to the Gossamer Huts. In this form, Yarnspinner is invulnerable and immune to all damage and conditions, but is unable to take any actions. Yarnspinner is a kind and jovial individual whose interest in stories and fairy tales have left him with a positive outlook on the world. Addotopma; roleplaying notes for Yarnspinner are found at the end of the document. He is unaware that he is intruding on another domain of delight. His first instinct, when informed, is to relocate Fablerise elsewhere, but he is easily convinced to stay. Yarnspinner is non-confrontational and will not help defeat the hags if asked. Yarnspinner is looking for one of his lost books, “The Witch Queen’s Cauldron”. He had dropped it while wandering Fablerise. The book is located at the Babbling Spring, being found by pixies. #### Development If the characters have the book with them, they can hand it over to Yarnspinner. He will reward them by giving them a **spider** that will help them later on. The spider introduces itself as Spindle and bows before skuring off. Sindle will head to Loomlurch and eat the moths in Area L16.
> ##### Extraordinary Stories > Yarnspinner’s books are extraordinary and can sometimes be about a person's or place's past. How he collects the books remains a mystery, and it is hard to tell which stories he reads are true and which are pure fantasy. > > Consider having Yarnspinner read a story about one of the character’s past, with heavy symbolism. Or have Yarnspinner recite the story of Mister Witch and Mister Light and the echo Carnival in the Shadowfell.

\page If the characters don’t have to book or inform him where to find it, Yarnspinner’s ghostly form finds it before storytime happens at Storycircle. If the characters don’t return the book themselves, Yarnspinner goes to find it before storytime in Storycircle happens. If the characters think about keeping the book, Tumblestrum chimes in and insures that it is important that Yarnspinner finds the book. ## Storycircle After Yarnspinner receives the book or a little after he goes looking for it, Yarnspinner will wake up and escort everyone to Storycircle, a great mushroom circle in the center of Fablerise. If for whatever reason, Yarnspinner is unable to escort the characters, Tumblestrum does so instead. Storycircle is a circle of mushrooms made up of eighty-three mushrooms of differing sizes. Yarnspinner comes to Storycircle daily to read various stories to the inhabitants of Fablerise. ### Approaching Storycircle Describe Storycircle to the players as their characters come within view of the site:

Strings of webs with motes of light are strung between a circle of colorful mushrooms. Some mushrooms are small while others are huge and grow taller than many trees. The terrain within the circle is varied with moss and flowers growing throughout. As you get closer to the center of the circle, the vegetation seems to form natural cushions to sit upon.

If Yarnspinner has the book, “The Witch Queen’s Cauldron”, read the excerpt below, otherwise Yarnspinner reads a fairytale.

##### The Witch Queen’s Cauldron ___ - . . . Iggwilv, the Witch Queen, spoke. Her voice erupt and furrowed brow. - Marked a change, eyes awoke. Gold to iron, the cauldron now. - The alicorn in hand, at the cauldron's lip, its station. - She, time at her command, said allowed this incantation: _Eight cats perch atop eight dead attending Eight Lizards flee from eight rats scavenging Eight toads climbing meet eight dead and falling Eight snakes sneak under eight bats screaming Eight eyes open, always dreaming All on the cauldron that is ever seeming._

## Leaving Fablerise Once the characters enter Fablerise, they are able to enter and exit as they please. There is no need for a guide. If Otto is with the characters, he will want to separate from the party to find his family and bring them to Fablerise. ## Appendix A # Yarnspinner

### Yarnspinner Yarnspinner has a monstrous form resembling that of an enormous spider. However, he has a benevolent personality and is obsessed with stories. In fact, he has amassed quite a collection of storybooks, which he keeps in silk sacks for easy transport. When Yarnspinner dreams, he projects a harmless, ghost-like version of himself that wanders his domain. In this form, he can talk to strangers and steer them one direction or another without fear of being harmed. If a visitor needs a safe haven, Yarnspinner is more than happy to fashion a hut made of spider silk for his guest to inhabit. The visitor is free to remain there as long as they wish, provided they do no harm to the other denizens of Fablerise. Yarnspinner's favorite activity is to read stories aloud to the animals that occupy his domain, all of which benefit from having had awaken spells cast on them. The archfey's stories attract quite a gathering and are the talk of Fablerise's awakened animal kingdom. ___ - **Alignment.** Lawful good. - **Personality Trait.** “Everyone has a story to tell, and I have many.” - **Ideal.** “The pen is stronger than the sword.” - **Bond.** “I love reading stories to anyone who will listen, especially small animals.” - **Flaw**. “I don’t like being involved in the business of others.” #### Combat Notes Yarnspinner avoids combat whenever possible. If he ever finds himself in a fight, he uses his Web to restrain as many aggressors as possible.
