``` ``` ## Introduction "Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?", "Danjon ni Deai o Motomeru no wa Machigatteiru Darou ka?" or Danmachi as it is often shortened to, is a Japanese light novel, manga/comic and anime. The story largely takes place in the city of Orario. **Orario**, also known as the dungeon city, has an enormous, 50 story tower, Babel, at the centre of its 8 spoke-like main roads. The tower dominates the skyline of Orario and looks down on the rest of the city. Under the tower, however, is an unfathomably deep dungeon. **The Gods**, long ago descended upon the mortal realm seeking entertainment. They locked away their divine powers to live with their children in the lower world. The one thing they can offer to mortals is a falna, the power to enhance their abilities and fight monsters. Followers of a god that receive their falna become a part of their familia, which usually all lives in the same place. **The Dungeon** gives birth to monsters, and has many labyrinthian levels that descend below the city. Monsters, sustained by "magic stones" with a vast number of practical applications, are hunted by adventurers to gain excelia (experience) and money by selling their stones. The gods are not allowed in the dungeon, however whenever they are asked about its nature they tend to avoid the question or change the subject. **Adventurers** are the people who delve into this dungeon to slay the monsters and retrieve the magic stones in order to earn money. They are more powerful than regular mortals due to the powers gods have imbued in them. ## Characters and Terms To begin character creation you must spend creation points on the table below to determine certain aspects and strengths of your character. How powerful your magic is, how skilled with weapons or armour you are, your starting resources, and what skills and proficiencies you have. Below also outlines some common character and gameplay terms. ### Basic Abilities The five basic abilities are the core abilities that make up your character. They are: Strength, Vitality, Dexterity, Agility and Magic. Basic abilities are increased by gaining and spending excelia. The amount of excelia required depends on your race and ability score. Each ability (barring Magic) has a physical and mental component. ##### Strength (STR) Strength is a character's physical power and brawn. It helps to increase weapon damage, physical power and athleticism and carry capacity. Strength also corresponds to a character's social presence and conviction, how easily they can get the attention of others. ##### Vitality (VIT) Vitality is a combination of a character's stamina, health and fitness. It counts towards HP and resistance to effects such as poison. Willpower is also a component of Vitality, a character's mental defences and discipline. ##### Agility (AGL) Agility is a measure of a character's flexibility, speed and balance. It is used to determine the speed of attacks, movement, unarmed attacks and defence. Agility corresponds to a character's intelligence and charm, how smart and sharp they are. ##### Dexterity (DEX) Dexterity is a character's ability to perform fine motor skills, coordination, aim and reaction. Dexterity is added when attacking with ranged and finesse weapons. Dexterity also includes a character's awareness and manipulation, how in tune with their surroundings they are and how good they are at getting others to do things for them. ##### Magic (MAG) Magic is a character's ability to perform magic. The higher the magic ability, the more powerful the spells cast will be. Magic also has an impact on the amount of Mind a character has. ### Common Terms #### Status and Falna The falna is the blessing received from a god after becoming a part of their familia, the status is the elements of the falna, such as the basic abilities, magic, and other abilities gained through the collection of excelia. The status is usually a tattoo on an adventurer's back written in heiroglyphs. Most gods can hide their children's status so it is not accidentally revealed. #### Health - Hit Points and Wounds Damage reduces Hit Points (HP), which represents a character's toughness and ability to stave off injury. When HP inevitably reaches 0 however, a character takes a wound and resets their HP to full. If you take 5 wounds, you die. More information in Part 6: Combat. #### Excelia Excelia is the experience points that you gain from defeating monsters and training. You can use excelia to improve your basic abilities and skills and gain perks. It also measures when a character levels up, though there are some extra requirements before a character can level up, as explained in Part 5: Advancement. #### Valis Valis is the currency of Orario, the city Danmachi takes place in. It uses "v" as its currency symbol. #### Measurement Distance is measured by three terms in the Danmachi world. Celch/es, Meder/s and Kirlo/s are identical to centimetres, metres and kilometres and are referred to as c, m and k respectively. #### Features Features are a character's abilities and aspects. The following are all features. ##### Traits Elements of a character not explicitly outlined in a status, how their education, personality and mental abilities help them. ##### Techniques Special moves characters can learn and take that enhances their combat prowess. ##### Magic and Spells Magic is the use of mystic energy to cast fantastic spells that can change the battlefield and swing the tides in your favour. ##### Perks Perks are special abilities that can be gained by spending excelia and fulfilling requirements. ##### Racial Features The abilities gained from your race. You begin with some core features and you choose another two from a list. \page

## Step by Step Characters ### 1. Choose Race Every character belongs to a demi-human race. In the Races section below, the playable species in Orario are listed. ##### Race Options - Amazon. A race of proud, female warriors who prefer to fight unarmoured. - Beastfolk. Demi-humans with animal ears and tails who have the ability to bring forth the beast within and enhance their physical capabilities. - Dwarf. Stout and sturdy demi-humans who live in underground cities, exceptionally adept at mining and crafting. - Elf. Hailing from the dense forests, the prideful elves are known for their beauty, intelligence and magical abilities. - Halfblood. Born of two different races, halfbloods are generally more versatile and varied than their parent's race. - Human. Versatile and determined, humans are the most common, yet often thought of as 'weak' due to their historic ineptitude with magic. - Prum. Small demi-humans with exceptional eyesight and night vision, prums are often looked down upon as frail or weak and not fit for dungeon exploration. ### 2. Magic After choosing your race, you may select to learn magic, however it comes with an excelia debt that must be repaid before you level up. You can choose to repay any amount of your debt whenever your status is updated. Taking one of these options means you have the ability to increase your Magic basic ability, otherwise you cannot. 1. 1000 debt. Begin with two spells. 2. 500 debt. Begin with one spell. Roll your spell(s) on the table to determine which you learn. Purchase Equipment You begin with 50,000 Valis (v). Spend Valis on equipment, robes, staves, weapons and armour. Remaining valis can be kept for later or spent on "Gear" as described in Part 2: Equipment. ### 3. Personality and Appearance Write down some aspects of your character's personality and appearance. Think about their goals and aspirations, why do they choose to adventure? Then write down why they can't achieve their goal - what do they need and how can they get it? Work with your DM to create an interesting drive. You can also write down their personality - how do they generally act and get what they want? Two to three words is sufficient, however you can write more if you wish. ### 4. Calculations On your character sheet, you may be confused about some of the values and how they are calculated. The online sheet does most of it for you, however. ##### Walking Speed Your walking speed starts at 5 m plus your Agility modifier. This number represents what you can carry on you, armour worn and items held aren't counted. You can carry more: up your Strength modifier, however you move at half speed and have disadvantage on attack rolls when you carry extra items this way. ## Races In Orario, you will find a wide range of people who call Orario home. They may be different shapes, sizes, and colours but they each have an equal right to enjoy Orario and delve the dungeon. Races other than humans are named 'demi-humans.' ### Amazon Amazons are a race of dark-skinned women who live in dense jungles. Amazons leave their home to bring glory to their name and clan. Amazons are very strong and agile, preferring not to wear much armour and rely on their bodies for adequate defence. ##### Core Amazon Features Your Amazon character has a number of traits that they share with others of their race. ***Basic Ability Improvement.*** The excelia required to improve your Strength, Vitality and Agility all decrease by 5%. ***Size.*** Amazons are very tall and range from 1.4 to 2 meders tall. Your size is medium. ***Amazon Resilience.*** When you are not wearing armour, you can add your level to your Defence. Additionally, you can reduce the damage you take by 1 a number of times equal to your level, regaining all expended uses at the end of a long rest. ***Relentless Warrior.*** When you are reduced to 0 health but not killed outright, you can drop to 1 health instead. You can't use this feature again until you finish a long rest. ##### Other Abilities Your character is specialised or different to some other Amazons in certain ways. Choose two abilities below to gain at character creation. ***Amazon Fist Fighting.*** Your unarmed strikes have either the Deadly or Powerful property for you (chosen at creation). ***Commanding.*** You begin with the Frightening or Leadership trait. Additionally, you can spend an action to make eye-contact with a target within close to medium range. They either gain Despair or gain a disadvantage on rolls until the beginning of your next turn, your choice. ***Rage of the Amazons.*** While bloodied, you can choose to enter a rage, while raging you gain critical strikes for all attacks that hit. However, your fatigue gain is doubled. The rage lasts until all enemies are defeated, you aren't bloodied anymore or you begin bleeding out. You can only rage once per long rest. ***Direct.*** Roll Social Rating against a target in conversation with a +2 bonus. On a success, you fluster the target, forcing them to reveal information or become dazed/submissive. ***Seduction.*** You begin with the Beautiful and Manipulative trait. ### Beastfolk Beastfolk are a demi Human race of people with characteristics from a wide range of animals. They have sharp senses and can channel their inner beast to boost their natural abilities. ##### Core Beastfolk Features Beastfolk share traits passed down from their bestial heritage and come in many shapes, sizes and varieties. ***Basic Ability Improvement.*** The excelia required to improve one ability of your choice decreases by 10%, and the excelia required to improve a different ability of your choice decreases by 5%. ***Size.*** Beastfolk are about the same size as humans and range from 1.5 to over 2 meders tall. Your size is medium. ***Beastify.*** Once per long rest as a quick action, you call upon your primal lineage and your bestial attributes increase for a minute. You regain one health and gain advantage on attack rolls for the duration. ***Acute Senses.*** You begin with the Perceptive trait and choose one of the following senses. - **Smell.** When you assess, you can ask "Who or what has been here?" instead of another option. - **Hearing.** You can always ask "What is going to happen?" when you assess. - **Sight.** When you can apply a trait, you gain two additional questions. ##### Other Abilities Choose two abilities from the ones below. ***Tough Hide.*** You regain two health instead of one when you beastify, and for the duration your Defence dice are d8s. ***Ferocious.*** You gain the Frightening trait. Your unarmed strikes gain the Deadly or Accurate property for you (chosen at creation). You gain a d10 advantage on damage rolls when you beastify. ***Quick Step.*** Your base walking speed increases by 2. Targets cannot attempt to Follow you when you move past them. ***Sneaky.*** You begin with the Stealthy trait. You can remain hidden while moving. ***Mystic.*** (Requires Magic) Your excelia debt is reduced by 100. When you roll to gain a spell, there's a 1 in 6 chance it begins as one level higher. ***Pack Hunter.*** You begin with the Leadership trait. When close to an ally, you can use the Help action as a quick action to grant both you and an ally advantage on one check or attack roll each. ***Roar.*** When you beastify, you can roar or howl to frighten enemies or inspire allies. Choose to gain one inspiration or inflict one despair. \page

Originating from subterranean fortresses and strongholds, dwarves come to the surface to seek glory for their people. ##### Core Dwarf Features Your dwarf character has an assortment of abilities that they share with other dwarves. ***Basic Ability Improvement.*** The excelia required to improve your Strength decreases by 10%, and the excelia required to improve your Vitality decreases by 5%. ***Size.*** Dwarves average about 1.4 to 1.7 meders tall and are very broad. Your size is medium. ***Tough.*** You gain +1 defence and ignore the effects of being bloodied. ***Strong.*** When you hit an enemy with a condition they lose the condition and become stunned. ##### Other Abilities Choose two from the following. ***Bold.*** You have advantage on area threat checks. Enemies within your threatened area cannot score critical strikes against you, they count as regular hits instead. ***Hearty Taverngoer.*** You begin with the Friendly trait. When you recover in downtime, you can choose up to 10 other targets who also spend time recovering. You and others you choose remove additional fatigue points equal to your level. ***Armour Mastery.*** Each piece of armour counts as 1 less weight for you. ***Dwarven Craftsmanship.*** You begin with the Crafting trait. You also gain a weapon or shield with either the Durable or Heavy property - grade equal to your level. ***Battlecry of Steel and Stone.*** Once per long rest you can spend an action to bolster your allies and inspire courage. You and your allies can immediately spend their movement and you gain 1 Inspiration. Additionally, you gain no penalty to leadership from armour. ***Tunnel Expert.*** Gain an advantage when navigating in cavern environments. ### Elf Elves are beautiful, highly intelligent and prideful beings who excel at magic. They live in forests and are considered exceptionally beautiful by others, however they are haughty and hate it when people touch their skin. ##### Core Elf Features Your elf character has a variety of natural abilities that they share with other members of their race. ***Basic Ability Improvement.*** The excelia required to improve your Magic or Agility (your choice upon creation) decreases by 10%, and the excelia required to improve your Dexterity decreases by 5%. ***Size.*** Elves average about 1.4 to 1.8 meders tall. Your size is medium. ***Congenital Elven Magic.*** If you have magic your excelia debt is reduced by 150. Otherwise, you learn one spell and can cast it once per long rest, spell level equal to your level. ***Elven Perception.*** You begin with the Alert trait and do not gain disadvantage from hearing concealment. ##### Other Abilities Choose two from the following. ***High Elven Education.*** You begin with the Educated trait and can speak, read and write hieroglyphs, the secret language of the gods and what statuses are written in. ***Elven Beauty.*** You gain the Friendly or Beautiful trait. There's a 1 in 6 chance that when you meet an NPC for the first time you immediately improve their attitude of you. The DM may determine that there is a higher or lower chance depending on the NPC. ***Forest Dwellers.*** You begin with the Resourceful or Oriented trait and restore 2 additional fatigue when resting in forests and nature environments. ***Fairy Blood.*** You add your level to resisting charm and petrification. ***Dark Elf Sight.*** You can see in dim light within a close range of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. ***Elven Accuracy.*** When you attack, you may replace a d8 with a d10 before you roll. ***Haughty Isolationists.*** You gain +5 to interact socially with other elves but have a -2 bonus to interact socially with other races. ***Composed.*** Gain a Knowledge trait of your choice. Additionally, you can spend 1 fatigue to resist the stun effect of Despair. \page

### Halfbloods Of two worlds, halfbloods are born of either a human or amazon and another demi-human race. ##### Core Halfblood Features ***Basic Ability Improvement.*** The excelia required to improve a basic ability of your choice decreases by 10%. This cannot be the same ability improved by your heritage. ***Size.*** Halfbloods are varied, though around the same size and humans and average from about 1.5 to over 1.8 meders tall. Your size is medium. ***Additional Trait.*** You begin with an extra trait of your choice. ##### Other Abilities Choose one of the following. ***Half-Elf.*** You gain Elven Perception and a choice from elf's "Other abilities." ***Half-Dwarf.*** You gain Strong or Tough and a choice from dwarf's' "Other abilities." ***Half-Prum.*** You gain Exceptional Eyesight and a choice from prum's "Other abilities." ***Half-Amazon.*** You gain Amazon Resilience and a choice from amazon's "Other abilities." >##### Hybrid Races >Demi humans must mate with others of the same race to give birth to children. However Humans and Amazons can bear children with any race. Elves have low birth-rates compared to the other races due to their long lifespans. ### Human Generally considered weak due to their ineptitude with magic, humans are actually quick to adapt and overcome impossible odds despite their weakness. ##### Core Human Features ***Basic Ability Improvement.*** The excelia required to improve three basic abilities of your choice decreases by 5%. ***Size.*** Humans average about 1.5 to 1.8 meders tall. Your size is medium. ***Human Versatility.*** After you make a roll, you may reroll a die once and take either result. You can't use this ability again until you rest for an exploration turn. ***Additional Trait.*** You begin with an extra trait of your choice. ##### Other Abilities Choose two from the following. ***Determination.*** Once per long rest, you can choose to halve your current fatigue score (rounding down). ***Adaptive.*** After you fail a roll, you can combine any 4 dice that aren't successes and add 1 success to your result. ***Natural Leader.*** When you Help, you also gain advantage on an ability check or attack roll until the end of your next turn. ***Friendly.*** You begin the Friendly trait. Add 1 to reaction rolls with other humans. ***Quick Learner.*** For every 5 days you spend training, you can add another day of progress at no cost. ***Motivated.*** Gain a quest trait at character creation, can have a maximum of 2 quest traits at a time. ***Non-Human Heritage.*** Gain an 'other ability' from another race (not halfblood). ### Prum The smallest race, prums are known for their excellent sight that allows them to see in the dark. Prums are often looked down upon as the weakest race due to their small stature and lack of innate magic. As a result, most prums are downtrodden and disheartened, resulting in a lack of interest in dungeoneering. ##### Core Prum Features ***Basic Ability Improvement.*** The excelia required to improve your Dexterity decreases by 10%, and the excelia required to improve your Agility decreases by 5%. ***Size.*** Prums average about 0.8 to 1.2 meders tall. Your size is small. ***Exceptional Eyesight.*** You gain the Perceptive trait. Additionally, you can see in the dark as well as you could in light. ***Nimble.*** You can move through the space of any creature that is of a size larger than yours. Additionally, when you dodge you ##### Other Abilities Choose two from the following abilities. ***Small Frame.*** You start with the Stealthy trait. If you have any cover or concealment when combat begins, you are hidden. ***Underestimated.*** You start with the Manipulative or Friendly trait. When you fail a check or miss an attack, a target of your choice within close range gains a condition. ***Melancholy.*** You have disadvantage to save vs Despair, but gain an additional excelia for overcoming it. ***Quick Wit.*** When you assess the situation, the next roll that uses the answer/s gains advantage. ***Quick Hands.*** You gain an Exploration trait of your choice and an additional quick slot on top of your regular pack slots. \page

## Traits Traits are the elements of a character that aren't portrayed in their status, how perceptive, educated, or social they might be. When you can relate a roll to one of your traits, you gain an advantage to the roll. ### Exploration Traits Those particularly in tune with their surroundings and environment (or are adept at moving around environments they're not supposed to be in) are likely to have many exploration traits. They are used when finding your way or orienting or understanding the things around you. 1. **Alert.** Your senses are in tune with the surroundings and you are often the first to notice something is amiss. 2. **Oriented.** Your sense of direction is impeccable and you always know where you are. 3. **Resourceful.** You're adept at foraging and finding things in the environment. 4. **Stealthy.** You're very good at keeping quiet and out of sight (and out of noses too) when necessary. 5. **Streetwise.** You have the skills and awareness necessary to navigate Orario with ease, including the more shady areas and people. 6. **Burglar.** The skills necessary to subtlely break and enter. 7. **Cartographer.** Skilled with the reading and creating of maps, useful to navigate the dungeon and find your path back when lost. 8. **Perceptive.** Your keen senses often notice things others miss when examining something. ### Social Traits Social traits are important for interacting with people and gaining their favour or making them do what you want. 1. **Friendly.** You're generally approachable and easy to talk to. 2. **Manipulative.** You have skill in getting others to do what you want with carefully chosen words. 3. **Leadership.** Your presence is reassuring and you have skill with commanding and instructing others. (See leadership in combat). 4. **Frightening.** You can forcefully impose your will on others, usually with threats of violence or sheer force of personality. 5. **Observant.** You're perceptive of people's body language and mannerisms when speaking. 6. **Beautiful.** You're remarkably good looking, many people often treat you nicely upon your first interaction. 7. **Disciplined.** You're great at resisting influence and keeping your cool in tough situations. 8. **Bargaining.** You're great at bargaining and haggling. ### Knowledge Traits Knowledge traits involve education and most learned skills such as crafting skills, education and wisdom. 1. **Craftsman.** You're skilled with crafting. Choose one craft: Alchemy, Armoury, Staff Smithing, Tinkering, Weapon Smithing. You can take this trait multiple times, picking a different craft each time. 2. **Educated.** You have learned or been taught the basics of academics; history, science, geography, and even the basics of magic and the dungeon. 3. **Hospitable.** Cooking, cleaning and being an adept and welcoming host to guests or just generally keeping things in order. 4. **Monster Tamer.** The skill of taming monsters and bending their wills to train them as companions in combat. See (insert page) for other rules in monster taming. 5. **Healer.** You have learned or been trained as a physician and have basic knowledge of anatomy and injuries. Once per quick rest, you can treat someone's wounds and reduce their Fatigue by your level. 6. **Nature.** You're familiar with many plants and animals and can usually recall facts about them when necessary. 7. **Language.** You've studied common languages from around the world. # Quests The blood of gods and souls of heroes roam the earth, filtered through experience and birthright, those with the brightest souls are capable of great things. Quest traits are a special type of trait that changes every so often and grants excelia and inspiration as you work towards them, representing a character's personal ambitions and goals for becoming stronger. Usually you can only have one quest trait at a time. Quest traits give a character a sort of side-quest to perform while delving the dungeon to realise their ambitions. ### Types of Quest Traits #### Glory and Fame For people to know your name and the deeds that come with it. Choose one of the following (or create your own with approval from the DM). Lead a successful military campaign or battle Complete a heroic deed or act of valor Become a member of a prestigious organization or guild Win a prestigious award or title Become a legend in a specific field or profession Win a tournament or competition of skill or prowess Achieve a high score in an event that is widely acknowledged have a song or story written about your deeds Make a name for yourself in a specific area of expertise. #### Prove your Worth For characters who seek to prove their worth to themselves, their allies, or their enemies. Achieve a specific rank or title within a guild or organization Win a tournament or competition Complete a difficult task or challenge Survive a dangerous situation or encounter #### Vengeance For characters who seek to avenge a wrong or injustice that has been done to them or their loved ones. A dark quest, one which leads to much hardship and suffering. Defeat a specific enemy or rival Avenge a fallen ally or family member Take control of a territory or resource Recover or destroy an object or artifact that has been stolen or taken from them When you fulfil a vengeance goal, gain 1 permanent fatigue, when you complete the quest you gain another 5 as the strength is sapped from your body. #### Luxury and Decadence For characters who seek to live a life of luxury and excess. ## Equipment The currency used in Orario is Valis (v). The economy in Orario almost entirely revolves around the magic stones that power monsters in the dungeon by the guild who has a monopoly on the magic stone market. ### Cracks - Equipment Durability Due to the extreme and fantastical natures of both their users and victims, equipment often becomes battered and broken, requiring repairs and maintenance when adventurers return to the surface. When an item's durability is reduced, it gains a Crack. The number of Cracks an item can gain depends on it's type, though most mundane items have 0. These rules can be found in part 8: Variant Rules ### Equipment Weight The weight is how heavy or bulky, or awkward to carry an item is. You can carry weight equal to the Carry value listed of your equipped pack, described on page 5 (calculations) and page 14 (equipment). Only equipment you do not wear or hold is counted towards weight. ### Weapons The Weapons table shows the most common weapons used in Orario, their price and weight, the damage they deal when they hit, and any special properties they possess. A melee weapon is used to attack a target in an adjacent square - within 1 m you, whereas a ranged weapon is used to attack a target at a distance. The weapons in the below table are all named broadly to give a general idea, however changing the name and description is perfectly acceptable as long as it retains the same properties. **Attack Power.** The attack power of a weapon is how much damage it deals when you hit with an attack. Other abilities or effects may require you to use Attack Power. **Cost.** Most weapons bought from the guild cost an amount dependent on their category, though some items have a specific price that overrides this. ##### Small Weapons Small weapons are usually short, don't have a lot of reach and deal the least amount of damage. However, they are agile and quick. **Finesse.** When attacking with small weapons, you use your choice of your Strength or Dexterity modifier for the attack. **Light.** You can dual wield these weapons. ##### Medium Weapons Medium weapons are larger than small weapons and are usually held in one or two hands. However, they are not as quick as small weapons or as damaging as large weapons. **Versatile.** Medium weapons can be held in either one or two hands. When holding it in two hands, the weapon's Attack Power increases by +1. While holding the weapon in one hand, you can use either your Strength or Dexterity modifier for attack rolls. ##### Large Weapons Large weapons have the most reach and damage potential but are usually heavy and slow to attack with. **Two-Handed.** Large weapons require two hands to use. Thrown weapons excepted. #### Ranged Weapons Ranged weapons are used to attack a target at a distance, as indicated in the 'range' property in the weapon table. Rnaged weapons have three categories, short, medium and long. Attacking a target within your short range grants a +1 to the attack roll, attacking past your short range but within the medium range has no bonus and attacking past the medium up to the long range grants a -2 to the attack roll. Loading ammunition and shooting a bow, crossbow or similar weapon requires two hands, while thrown weapons only require one hand. ##### Weapon Properties **Light.** You can engage in dual wielding when you hold two light weapons. **Reach.** You can attack targets from 2 m away with this weapon. **Fast.** When attacking an off-guard target, you deal an additional dice of damage. **Powerful.** Add the weapon's Attack Power to area threat checks. **Forceful.** Forceful weapons allow you to add the weapon's Attack Power to checks to shove a creature. **Accurate.** Add +1 to accuracy rolls with this weapon. **Deadly.** Damage dice explode. **Protective.** You can roll your weapon's Attack Power when attempting to retreat or follow etc.???? **Unarmed.** This counts as an unarmed attack. **Thrown.** You can use your choice of your Strength or Dexterity modifier for the attack rolls with this weapon **Range.** Describes the size of the weapon's range categories in order of short, medium, long. \page

## Armour and Shields Strap on your chainmail and tie up your boots! Time to suit up. Depending on which priority you chose, you can benefit from different amounts of different types of armour. **Taking Armour On and Off.** #### Heavy Armour Heavy armour is made from the stronger and heavier materials and covers more of the body. It offers greater protection at the cost of lower mobility. Heavy armour grants +1 Def, Wgt, and cracks, but gives -1 to the armour's penalty. It also costs 5 times as much. ##### Armour Properties The armour you wear determines how well defended you are against most attacks, however it also slows you down and inhibits you in some aspects. **Slot.** Armour can only be worn on certain locations of the body, as demonstrated by its 'slot' location. You can only wear one piece of armour per slot. **Defence (Def).** The armour (and shield) you wear determines your Defence, which decreases the chance enemies have to hit you with an attack. **Penalty.** The location slot your armour is worn determines what value is reduced by the penalty when you wear this armour. | Slot | Skills | |:-- | :-- | | Chest | Dodge | Vambrace | DEX | Greaves | DEX | Helmet | Presence, Awareness ### Shields A shield is held in one hand, light shields can be donned and doffed as a free item interaction, however heavy shields require an action to be taken on or off. ##### Shield Properties **Quick.** You can add the shield's defence bonus when dodging. **Damaging.** This shield counts as a weapon. **Shove.** When you deal damage to a target with lower Strength than you with this shield, you can push them 1 m away from you. **Protective.** When you defend, you can apply the shield's bonuses to both yourself and an ally./50% chance of not taking a crack.

You can only wear one backpack at a time, but you may wear a belt pouch and a backpack at the same time. ### Gear Gear is an abstracted form of inventory. Characters carry Gear and can spend it in the dungeon to withdraw from their bag what they need. Gear is measured in valis and every 10,000v you carry weighs 1 unit. Otherwise, it's assumed that you generally have enough ammunition to fight with. **Dungeon Map.** A dungeon map displays a level, marked with useful information. When using a dungeon map, you gain advantage on naviating while on the floor the map displays. Usually there aren't maps of the deep floors. **Magic Stone Lantern.** A magic light source crafted from the magic stones of monsters. It sheds light in a 5 m radius and can be turned on or off as a free action. **Rope.** Regular rope can be cut with ease (standard action) or broken with a 15 or higher Strength check. **Rations.** Any type of food that has a lasting shelf-life and sustains an adventurer for a day. **Crowbar.** Grants a +2 bonus to Strength checks when applied. **Crafting Tools.** Tools are used by craftsmen to work materials into their desired form or repair damaged items. **Repair Kit.** Can be used by craftsmen over a long rest to repair a crack on an items. Consumed after use. **Lock Picks.** Used to open standard locks. Consumed upon a failed check. Using makeshift lock picks grants disadvantage on the roll. **Monster Repellant/Lure.** A repellant reduces the chance of monsters approaching, however has no effect in combat. While a repellant is active you cannot regain Health or Mind naturally during a rest. A lure increases the chance of monsters approaching (80% chance of monsters appearing every minute). \page

A stone occupies a slot in a magic staff or similar item magic is channelled through in the act of casting. They grant benefits just by casting through them, however can also grant even greater power at the cost of breaking them at the end of chanting as the spell is released. **Basic Spell Stone.** Casting any spell through this stone grants you a +1 to Magic Power. Consuming this stone allows you to roll an additional dice of Magic Power for a single spell. **Attack Spell Stone.** Casting an attack spell through this stone grants you a +3 to Magic Power. Consuming this stone allows you to double the damage you deal with a spell. **Defence Spell Stone.** Casting a defence spell through this stone grants your or the target a +1 to Defence for the duration (or 1 minute, whichever is longer). You or one target of a defence spell takes half damage for 1 minute when you consume this stone. **Support Spell Stone.** One target of a support spell you cast through this stone regains hitpoints equal to your Magic modifier. Consuming this stone **Curse Spell Stone.** Targets of your curse spells take an extra 1d6 damage when they take damage. Consuming this stone instantly deals damage in d6s equal to the spell's Magic Power to a target affected by your curse spell. **Huge Spell Stone.** Casting a spell through this stone grants you a +5 to Magic Power. Consuming this stone allows you to cast the spell as if it were two spell levels higher. While wearing magic robes, a mage gains the benefits of its properties and the bonus to their magic power. ### Properties Properties of magic staves and robes are explained below. **Light Staff.** When you cast a spell through this staff, you regain mind equal to your Magic Power. **Swift Staff.** Chanting as an action while holding this staff reduces the spell's chant by 2 rather than 1. **Precise Staff.** Add your Magic Power to magical attacks and contests while holding this staff. **Reliable Staff.** Reroll 1s you roll on Magic Power. **Heavy Staff.** When you damage a target with a spell, you can choose to add your Magic modifier to the damage. **Rough Staff.** **Basic Robes.** You gain +1 carry capacity while wearing these robes. **Heavy Robes.** You gain a +2 to Resistance while wearing these robes and the robe can develop 1 crack to reduce damage like armour **Silken Robes.** When you take a rest, you regain an additional point of health and extra mind equal to your MAG modifier. **Enchanted Robes.** You add your Magic Power to checks to resist magical effects while wearing these robes. **Cool Robes.** You reduce Ignis Fatuus damage you take by your MAG modifier. **Elemental Robes.** When you cast a spell of a specific elemental type (fire, ice, tempest, acid or poison) while wearing these robes, the spell's power counts as one level higher. \page

## Downtime Perhaps at the beginning or end of a session, your character gains 7 downtime days (dtds) to spend on out of dungeon activities. Some options you can perform are listed below. You can also resolve these out of session over text with little issue. **Work.** You work and earn money. For every downtime day you work, gain 1,000 times your level in valis. **Training.** Out of the dungeon, you can still gain excelia, but at a slower rate. For every day that you train, you gain enough excelia to afford a single ability point at your level. It costs 5,000 times your level in valis per day of training. **Crafting.** (See Below) **Repairing Items.** **Recovering.** You spend time reducing your fatigue, resting and relaxing. Each day you spend recovering in your familia home you **Gambling.** A character heads down to the casino district to test their luck and hopefully earn some money. More information below. **Training Monsters.** (See Monster Taming) **Shopping.** You spend time searching for an item or material. More information below. #### Gambling Every downtime day spend gambling, pick *High Stakes* or *Low Stakes* and the amount of money you wish to bet. Roll three checks, any combination of Charisma and Intelligence, however you must have at least one of each. The DC in *low stakes* you must beat is equal to 10, which increases by 1 for every 10,000 valis you bet. Most are available either directly from the Guild or the abundant stores catering to adventurers around the tower. When you seek out an item more rare or powerful however, it can take a bit more time. When you begin shopping, declare the item type and grade you are searching for and roll. 10,000v per grade per day, 3-5 days per grade, all per property/effect. ## Crafting and Materials Craftsmen and artisans abound in Orario, raring to sell their items and improve their trade for wealthy adventurers. ### Materials Materials are used to craft items, and have two base charcteristics: **Grade** and **Properties**. #### Grades The grade is on a scale from I to S, S being the highest quality and I being the lowest. The grade also corresponds to a 1-10 scale. #### Properties Properties are the features or traits of a material. For example, an herb may have healing properties, or a certain monster's horns may have a fire aspect that imbues the items it is made into with fire properties. When you create an item, the properties of the material will determine what you can make and how you can change or improve it. ### Crafting To craft an item, choose a template from Item Types and gather your materials, then apply additions as appropriate. ##### Alchemy Alchemy is the crafting of potions and elixirs. Many familias specialise in alchemy and making healing items for adventurers. An alchemist is also known for their ability to create concoctions that harm or confuse monsters. Potions: Magical liquids that restore or enhance when consumed. Compound/Synthesis: Items crafted with chemicals and reagents such as monster lures or repellents and explosives. ##### Armoury Armoury is the knowledge used when crafting armour, shields and defensive equipment specially built for an adventurer's fighting style. Armour: Protective equipment such as armour pieces and shields. ##### Staff Smithing Staff smithing is the skills and knowledge used to craft magic staves, robes and spell stones to enhance the power of mages. Magic Staves: Enhancing a Mage's magic, the staves available under Magic equipment are usable as templates. Spell Stones: Small, medium or large spellstones can be crafted, as described in the equipment lists. Mage Robes: Clothing used by mages to enhance their power and protect against certain dangers. \page

##### Tinkering Tinkers practice crafting gadgets, traps and items to aid in a number of different situations. Trick Arrows: Ammunition with special effects. Gadgets: Small objects and contraptions with fantastical abilities, sometimes powered by magic stones. Traps: A contraption used to damage or restrain those who unknowingly activate it. ##### Weapon Smithing Weaponsmithing is the art of crafting weapons from metal, wood or drop items. Weapon: Any item from the weapons table (aside from the 'Unarmed Strike') is available as a template for weapon smiths. A skilled weapon smith can also create magic swords, fragile weapons imbued with power that are destroyed upon the depletion of their power. #### Applying Effects How many effects and at what grade depends on the craftsman's skill. A day must be spent designing the schematic for the item and planning its effects. The length of time it takes to craft the item depends on its materials and ## Familia Home Your familia's home is where you live with your god and fellow familia members. When you begin, it is usually only 1 or 2 rooms with the bare essentials in a cheap area in town. It's not great, but it's a place to sleep and recover outside of the dungeon at least. ### Modular Bases Your familia home begins with 2 rooms, at least one of which must be a Living Area. ### Familia Management Increasing familia grades, competition, expeditions, support and contracts, NPC familia members, units, leadership, prestige and reputation such as a larger or more impressive base, can earn the players respect and admiration from other adventurers and the inhabitants of the city. \page

## Monster Taming A monster tamer bends creatures of the dungeon to their will through sheer force of personality and careful skill. If you have the Monster Tamer trait, you can attempt to tame a monster when you reduce it to zero health. Roll a Charisma (Taming) skill check against the monster's Will. On a success, you establish your connection with the monster and it returns to 1 health. The monster does not take any actions until the end of combat and you must spend 10 minutes establishing a relationship once combat is over which can be part of a rest. If you do not establish a relationship, the monster wanders off and likely dies to another adventurer. Answer questions relating to the monster's personality to determine how many morale tokens you can hold this round. Fierce - Is the enemy bloodied/vulnerable? - When damage is dealt/enemy killed - Proud: +1 token for each 'no:' - Is the monster hurt? - Is the monster retreating? - Is the monster being challenged? Loyal/Friendly - Is the master damaged? - Master is far away/more than 5 m. Cunning - Is the master in trouble/losing? - Others are falling Brave/Heroic - Nearby 3 or more allies - Twitchy - Few distractions/outnumbering Spend morale tokens to gain bonuses to your monster's actions. A monster adds its loyalty to morale checks and on a failure, the monster's loyalty is reduced by 1. If it is reduced to 0 or below, the monster takes its reaction. **Multiple Tamed Monsters.** If you attempt to control multiple monsters in combat, you can only issue commands to one, and they have disadvantage on morale checks. **Commands.** On your turn, you can issue commands to a monster you have tamed as a minor action and it takes the following action, as well as moving up to its speed. - Dodge. The monster avoids attacks. Its Defence improves by its Dodge bonus and it has advantage on Agility checks until the start of your turn. - Defend. The monster defends an ally within 1 m. Attack against the ally have disadvantage until the start of your turn. - Attack. The monster makes an attack against a creature of your choice within its range. - Help. The monster distracts a target within 1 m of it. The next attack against the target is made with advantage. **Loyalty and Training.** A monster begins with 0 loyalty and 0 training levels, which can be gained through training it in downtime. #### Monster Cages When you leave the dungeon, you are not allowed to bring a monster through the city, it would cause panic and likely make you a target for adventurers. The guild provides storage and transportation solutions for a price and also purchases tamed monsters. The guild purchases monsters fot 5,000 times their level and an extra 10,000v for each level of training the monster has. Where the monster goes after this is dubious. For a small or tiny monster, a cage and maintenance costs 10,000v per week, which increases by 10,000v for a medium or large monster and 50,000v for a huge or larger monster. Transporting a monster through town is half this price. #### Training a Monster During downtime, you can spend time training a monster to improve or change their capabilities. For every five days you spend taming a monster, it gains a level of training and one loyalty. Each time a monster gains a level of training, you can pick one of the following options which can each only be taken once. Tamed monsters have stats (commands, help/loyalty, dodge, defend, attack) which you improve here. **Change Personality.** You reroll the monster's personality and keep the new result. It loses any benefits or penalties of its old personality. **Improve Attack.** The monster's damage improves by 1. **Improve Teamwork.** When the monster helps or defends **Improve Defence.** The monster's Defence improves by 1/dodging. **Improve Loyalty.** Your monster gains another point of loyalty. Greater Training. Every time it gains 5 levels of training, it can take a greater command/train. **Improve Ability.** Increase your monster's Fortitude, Reflex or Will by 1 point. \page

# Magic A highly sought after skill in Orario which can turn the tide of battle or provide vital support. However, many spells take time to prepare and cast, the mage is exceptionally vulnerable during this time. Magic is sometimes used in tandem with warrior skills, such mages are often dubbed magic swordsmen - regardless of whether or not they actually use swords. These mages are able to use concurrent casting to move and attack while chanting. ## Spells Spells are magical incantations that focus magical energy into a specific application. It usually takes a long time and a great amount of effort to gather such energy and can be dangerous if the energy is released at the wrong time. Each spell listed is a template for mages to expand upon through upgrades and describe however they like. Feel free to come up with a cool name or chant for your spells. The amount of spells you know is determined by your choices at character creation, race and perks, though a character can't have more than three spells known. Spells with: - no duration are instant and have no lingering effects after the spell is cast - a duration of a round last until the start of the caster's next initiative segment, or about 10 seconds - a duration of 'combat' lasts until the end of combat, or about 2-5 minutes - a duration of 'explore' lasts for an entire exploration turn, around 1 hour **Chant.** Spells take time to chant before they can be cast. A chant time of 0 means it has 0 chant, you can use it immediately. A chant of 1 means that it triggers at the end of the caster's initiative segment, and higher chant scores mean that the spell triggers at the end of subsequent initiative segments. A spell with a chant time of 3 triggers at the end of the initiative segment two segments after yours for instance. **Range.** The range determines the maximum range a spell can be cast from. A spell with a range of 10 m can originate as far as 10 m away for instance. Some spells have a range of 0 followed by either touch or self in parentheses. A spell with the term 'self' can only affect the mage who casts it, and touch requires at attack against the target's dodge either unarmed or with the mage's magic staff if the target is unwilling and avoiding the spell. **Area/Target.** The way spells determine who or what it effects. Target means the mage chooses the spell's targets within range, while area affects all combatants within the area in range chosen by the mage. Areas are defined in meders, for instance a 2 m cube describes an area that affects 4 squares on a grid. A target that isn't entirely within the spell's area ???? gains some resistance to the effect. ## Casting Spells - Spell Power The effect of a cast spell is determined by Spell Power, which increases as the spell increases in level. A mage has mind equal to 3 + their Magic Modifier and regains all their mind at the end of a long rest. If a mage reaches a mind score of 0, they experience 'mind down' and halve their speed and gain disadvantage on ability checks. (take fatigue) \page

### Spell Interruption - Ignis Fatuus Ignis Fatuus, plural ignes fatui, is a dangerous side effect of magic that arises when a mage is careless in their chanting and casting. If the mage moves or takes other actions while chanting, the spell is interrupted. If the mage takes damage, is forced to make a check or is moved, the spell is interrupted. If your chanting is interrupted, roll VIT vs the spell's level TN. On a failure you lose the mind you cast on the spell and your health is reduced by 1 as the magical energy explodes in your face. #### Upgrades Spells are improved through upgrades, which are taken either at character creation through racial abilities, perks or through the expenditure of excelia. **Precise.** You gain a bonus to the spell's attack roll and the range increases by 5. **Distant.** Either range increases by 10 or area increases by 2. **Enduring Spell.** The duration increases by one category if it isn't instant and spell power counts as one level lower. **Lingering Spell.** A spell with an instant duration has a duration of a minute, the effect re-occurring at the start of the caster's turn. **Area Spell.** Instead of "Target" the spell becomes "Area" (2 m cube) within the range. If the range is 0 or touch, it becomes self, though does not affect you. **Self-Spell.** Range becomes 0 (self) if it isn't already and spell power counts as one level higher. **Extra Chant.** Increase chant by 1, spell power counts as one level higher. **Extra Targets.** Increase targets by 1, spell power counts as one level lower. ### Attack Spells Attack spells focus on offence and dealing damage. **Attack Upgrades.** **Elemental Spell.** The spell takes on one of the elemental aspects of your choice and targets special defences. All non-instant effects have a duration of one round. - Fire: Critical strikes deal an additional dice of damage. - Ice: Speed reduced by spell's level. - Tempest: The target is pushed in a direction of your choice (meders equal to spell's level). - Acid: Attacks against the target gain a bonus equal to spell level. - Poison: Damage dealt by the target is reduced by spell level. **Elemental Boost/Condition.** Fire applies burn, ice applies freeze, tempest applies daze, acid applies degredation, poison applies poison. #### Single Target ___ - **Chant:** 1 - **Area/Target:** 1 target - **Range:** 10 m ___ Roll Magic Power and Spell Power (A) as an attack against a target within range. **Upgrade: Homing.** If the attack misses, you can continue chanting and reattempt the attack at the start of your next turn. #### Area ___ - **Chant:** 2 - **Area/Target:** 2 m cube or 4x1 m line - **Range:** 5 m ___ Choose the area type when you pick this spell. Roll Spell Power (A) as an attack once and compare to all targets' defences within the area. #### Smite ___ - **Casting Time:** 2 - **Range:** 5 m - **Duration:** instant - **Area/Target:** 1 target ___ The target gains a bonus to their next attack roll equal to Magic Power + Spell Power (D). ### Defence Spells Defence spells protect targets from damage. **Thorns.** Once per turn, gain a bonus to an attack equal to the spell's level against a target who attacks the target of your defence spell. **Healing.** One target of the spell regains 1 health. **Buff.** Target gains advantage on one basic ability for duration (chosen when upgrade is taken). #### Magic Armouring ___ - **Chant:** 3 - **Range:** 0 (touch) - **Area/Target:** 1 target - **Duration:** combat ___ A target you touch has their defence increased by spell power (C) for the duration. #### Barrier ___ - **Chant:** 1 - **Range:** 5 m - **Area/Target:** 2 m cube - **Duration:** combat ___ You conjure a barrier to protect your allies. For a minute, targets within the area you choose within the range take no damage from attacks originating outside the area. Instead the damage is taken by the barrier which has defence equal to its power (C), resistance equal to half that and spell power (B) health. When the barrier is reduced to 0 health, the spell ends. **Debuff.** Enemies within the area of the spell have damage reduced by the spell's level. \page

#### Absorb ___ - **Chant:** 1 out-of-turn action - **Range:** 0 (touch) - **Area/Target:** 1 target - **Duration:** instant ___ When a creature uses an ability or power that deals Special damage within range, you can cast this spell to reduce the damage dealt by the spell's power (A). **Redistribution.** The next attack you make deals additional damage equal to the amount you reduced. **Drain.** Target takes a condition. **Interrupt.** Target tests Ignis Fatuus if applicable. **Shield.** Able to be used against Physical damage. ### Support Spells Support spells heal and enhance the abilities of their targets. **Support Upgrades.** **Curing.** Targets of the spell choose a condition to remove when the spell is cast. **Healing.** One target of the spell regains 1 health if it doesn't already restore health. #### Heal ___ - **Chant:** 2 - **Range:** 0 (touch) - **Duration:** instant - **Area/Target:** 1 target ___ A target you touch has SP (B) health restored to them. #### Enhance Ability ___ - **Chant:** 2 - **Range:** 0 (touch) - **Duration:** combat - **Area/Target:** 1 target ___ A target you touch adds spell power to checks relating to one basic ability (chosen when the spell is gained) and an additional effect based on the ability. STR: Critical strikes deal additional damage equal to spell power (C). VIT: AGL: Speed increases by spell power (C). DEX: Target gains an additional critical strike once per turn. MAG: The next spell the target casts counts as one level higher for the purposes of spell power. **Upgrades:** Multiple targets, self+power, area, choice between 2 abilities when cast #### Enhance Attack ___ - **Chant:** 2 - **Power:** 2 - **Range:** 0 (touch) - **Duration:** combat - **Area/Target:** 1 target ___ A target of your choice within range adds the spell's power to the damage they deal for the duration. Choose another damage type (+1 chant) ### Curse Spells Curse magic hexes and weakens its targets. **Curse Upgrades.** **Hexing Spell.** Targets also reduces checks they make by the spell's power. **Damage.** Target takes extra damage equal to spell level when they are next attacked. **Area.** Spell has an area of a 2 m square rather than targets. #### Weaken ___ - **Chant:** 1 - **Range:** 5 m - **Duration:** combat - **Area/Target:** 1 target ___ A target of your choice within the spell's range has their damage reduced by the spell's power (D) for the duration. #### Slow ___ - **Chant:** 2 - **Range:** 5 m - **Duration:** combat - **Area/Target:** 1 target ___ For the duration, a target of your choice within range has their dodge and speed reduced by the spell's power (D) and are only able to take an action or a free action, not both. #### Confuse ___ - **Chant:** 2 - **Range:** 5 m - **Duration:** combat - **Area/Target:** 1 target ___ For the duration, the target must make attacks against their closest/easiest target. If they don't, they have disadvantage on checks and attacks for the duration. \page

## Advancement As your character goes on adventures and dungeon runs, they will gain excelia and level up. Their basic abilities will get stronger and the character will become more powerful.

### Excelia Excelia is gained primarily from killing monsters and certain downtime activities and is used to purchase increases to your basic abilities and perks. ### Status Update Unspent excelia can be used when the familia's god updates your status, which takes around 10 minutes. ### Increasing Abilities At first level when your status is updated you get one point to put into your basic abilities for every 10 excelia you gain. At higher levels, the excelia required to gain a basic ability point rises. When you update your status, you cannot increase a score more than three grades above its original value. You cannot improve an ability past the S rank of your current level. For instance a level 3 cannot improve an ability past 150 points, they must level up before being able to do so. When an ability reaches the C rank of your current level, the ability exelia required to improve it increases by 50%. For instance, past C2, it would cost 37 excelia to improve the ability. ### Levelling Up To level up, a character must gain 10% of the total excelia required in one battle and be equal to or over the excelia required, reaching the next level when their status is updated. Additionally, you must have one basic ability at grade D or higher. The DM may overrule this if they judge that a feat was enough to impress the gods and level up. You can choose to hold off levelling up to gain more excelia and increase your basic abilities at the lower level. When a character levels up, they experience a huge boost in power. ## Perks A perk is a special type of feature, one earned through experience and the collection of excelia. This generally replaces Developmental Abilities and Skills from the original Danmachi. You can describe how you get these perks any way you like. Some perks have improvements that can be purchased, which enhances the perk and gives greater abilities. #### Heavy Armour Vanguard - 100 excelia After purchasing this perk, you can ignore the movement penalties of heavy armour and shields. Additionally, you can add your Vitality modifier to DR when taking the Defend action. **Improvements.** - You can Defend a creature within 1 m of you as well as yourself when you take the Defend action. - Creatures of your choice within 1/2 m of you can add your Vitality modifier to Agility or Strength checks. #### Chemist - 50 excelia You can take the full amount when applying a potion as a minor action. **Improvements.** Specialised Healer (50 excelia, 4 alchemy bonus). Add 4 (1d4) healing to any potion you create that restores health. Battle Chemist (50 excelia, 4 alchemy bonus). When you throw a vial or alchemy item as a major action, you can throw another as a minor action. Bomb Expert (100 excelia, 5 alchemy bonus). When you deal damage with an alchemy tool, you can add your alchemy bonus to the damage. #### Abnormal Resistance - 100 excelia You gain resistance to poison damage and have advantage on checks to avoid the poisoned condition. #### Light Defence Expert - 100 excelia - 4 light defence skill bonus **Improvements.** - You can dodge as an out of turn action. #### Leader - 100 excelia You can inspire as many times as you have ranks in the leadership skill per long rest as opposed to only once per battle. You can inspire as a minor action. You can use a major action to Order. When Ordering, you choose one of the following orders to issue to your allies. - Hold. If an enemy leaves a target's reach, they can use an out of turn action to make a contested athletics check. On a success the opponent cannot move unless they spend a major action to do so. ??? - Retreat. - Push/Advance. #### Heavy Weapons Master - 100 excelia - 4 heavy weapons bonus When you attack, you can choose to do so powerfully. For every 3 you have in your strength modifier, you can add an additional dice of weapon damage to your attack. If you roll the maximum number on a damage dice, roll another dice and add it to the attack. #### Medium Weapons Master #### Light Weapons Master #### Monster Tamer - 100 excelia - 4 taming bonus Monsters you have tamed have advantage on morale checks. When a monster you have tamed fails a morale check, you can spend an out of turn action to... Pick one: - Improved Attack/Defend/Help/Dodge. Gain a feature based on that? #### Learned - 100 excelia - 4 lore bonus When you take this perk, you learn an extra language and improving a general or specialist skill costs one less skill point (to a minimum of 1). Teacher. Once per day, you can spend 10 minutes with a person, instilling knowledge and wisdom you have learnt into them. For 24 hours, they can add 1d4 to any lore or perception checks they make. When you take the Descern action, you can also learn one of their ability scores. When you take the Descern action, you can always ask one question, if you succeed you can instead ask two questions. When you take a quick rest, you or an ally regains mind equal to your lore bonus. You can't use this ability again until you take a long rest. Improved training. If you spend a downtime day teaching someone (no cost), they can add...? #### Supporter - 100 excelia You can take the help action as a minor action at a range of 5 m. If you help as a major action however, you gain a benefit to yourself. #### Perceptive - 100 excelia - 4 perception bonus \page

## Other Actions Outside of combat, a character may attempt different things that aren't generally used in combat. Below are some actions and sample difficulties and expected results. Though some of these may seem obvious or self-explainatory, these are just ideas for some actions characters can take. Feel free to change the results based on circumstances. Some of these Difficulties may be given automatically based on what the story requires. The difficulties are assigned as follows. 5 - This task should be easy for regular people to do. 10 - For somone with skill or an adventurer, this task is relatively easy. 20 - This task requires much more skill, usually level 2 or above. 30 - 40 - 50 - Only high class adventurers are capable of feats such as these. Often they go above and beyond what would be thought possible for even lower level adventurers. \page

## Combat Slay some monsters or engage another adventurer! Combat is the core pillar this game strives to explore. ### Beginning Combat and Ordering Unless one side has been surprised or ambushed or the order of combat is clear, each side rolls 1d6 and organises their ranks into front and back (or less ranks if necessary). Bonuses and modifiers may be granted to each roll depending on the circumstance. For instance, the higher levelled side gains +1 to their roll, +2 if the power difference is significant. The front rank of each group acts first, the side that wins initiative goes first, then the process is repeated by the back. **Changing Ranks.** The only thing required to change the combat rank you are in for the next turn is an appropriate amount of movement (DM discretion) and expressed intent to join the new rank. ### Rounds, Turns and Actions A round consists of the period of time in which all combantants take their turn and resolve their actions, which is approximately 5 seconds. A turn is the period of time in which a group of combantants resolves all of their actions. ### Actions During their turn, a combatant can take one free action, one standard action and one reaction. You can also take a free action in place of a standard action if necessary. #### Free Actions A free action is used to perform small actions like retrieving an item from a belt pouch, opening a door, drawing a weapon or switching weapons, speaking and the like. #### Standard Action A standard action is used to perform major and important actions on a combatant's turn. #### Reactions Reactions take place at the start of the first and second initiative ranks, or in response to a specific trigger. A reaction is an action that can be taken in response to a specific trigger outside of a combatant's turn. ### Quick Overview A quick overveiw of the actions. **Move.** Move and reposition across the battlefield. **Attack.** Unleash your offensive power and attempt to inflict wounds. **Defend.** Harden your defences to defend yourself or someone close to you. **Item Interaction.** Interact with the environment or items nearby. **Assess the Situation.** Survey your surroundings for certain elements. **Help.** Aid a nearby ally. ### Reactions **Dodge.** In response to an attack, the defender attempts to dodge the damage entirely. **Block.** In response to an attack directed at either you or a nearby ally, the defender attempts to reduce the damage. **Counter-attack.** Having taken the defend action and in response to being attacked, the defender attempts to strike back. **Halt.** When a target enters your reach, you attempt to stop their progress and protect those behind you. **Flee/Follow.** When a target enters or leaves your reach, you try to flee or follow them. **Start Actions.** At the start of a round, leadership abilities and spellcasting (barring quick cast) is resolved, their effects coming into play later in the round. \page

## Standard Actions #### Move You move up to your speed as a free action. If you move as a standard action, you can move twice your speed and choose one of the following. - Charge. If you move in a straight line of at least 3 m towards a target, your next attack on your turn has advantage. - Retreat. When you move, you add x to your defence until the start of your next turn. - Sprint. You can move up to triple your speed instead. #### Attack You attempt to strike and or harm someone with a weapon. Roll the weapon's correlated basic ability and damage dice and compare to the target's defence value. If it is over, the attack hits and deals damage equal to the successes in excess to the target's defence. | Weapon | Ability | |:---|:--:| | Melee |Str | | Ranged | Dex | | Finesse | Dex or Str | | Unarmed | Str or Agl | ##### Critical Strikes An agile stab to the gut or an overwhelming cleave across the enemy, critical strikes are powerful attacks that can deal additional damage or impose detrimental effects to your target. The most common way to gain a critical strike is to Crack equipment, though they are also gained through special abilities and circumstances. You can spend critical strikes to gain an advantage or inflict a condition. ##### Dual Wielding When you take the attack action, you can immediately spend your reaction to add the attack power and properties of the other light weapon to the attack. #### Defend Steeling your defences and heightening your awareness of your opponent's attacks. Roll your dice for either AGL or VIT and add the successes to your defence score for the round. If you choose to defend an ally within 1 m of you, your VIT successes are instead added to their defence. #### Item Interaction A combatant can switch weapons, open a door, retrieve an item from their belt pouch and other small movements as a free action. Applying a potion, retrieving an item from a backpack or more lengthy interaction - rifling through crates or clothes, pulling or pushing something heavy - require a standard action. #### Assess the Situation Take a look around and figure out what's going on. Choose one of the following, the DM will provide you with an answer. If you have a knowledge trait that relates to this situation, choose two. - A strength or weakness the enemy has over you. - What is likely to happen next. - What here is trying to hide something. - How you could change the situation to ____ (maybe roll and successes = questions? but roll what, dex?) #### Help You aid an ally within 1 m of you, granting them an advantage on the next roll they make. #### Recovery Overcoming hardship, you steel yourself and break through the pain. Choose a condition currently afflicting you and roll VIT against the condition's grade (or 5 times your own level?). On a success, the condition is removed. ## Reactions **Dodge.** In response to an attack, you can roll your AGL and add it to your defence against that attack. **Block.** In response to an attack directed at either you or an ally within 1 m, you can roll your VIT and armour dice and reduce the attack's successes by that amount. **Counter-attack.** If you have taken the defend action on your turn and an attacker does not damage you with an attack, you may make an attack against them. **Halt.** When a target enters your reach, roll STR against the target's STR successes (minimum of 1). If you beat them, you can either reduce their speed by the excess or grant a disadvantage on their next attack. **Flee/Follow.** When a target enters or leaves your reach, you try to flee or follow them. Roll AGL the target's AGL successes. On a success, you can move after or away from them, up to your movement speed. ##### Start Actions **Inspire.** The leader grants a bonus to an ally, expending a point of Inspiration and granting 1d6 to their next attack or check. **Chant.** You begin to chant for a spell. Each spell has a chant score, you must wait a number of combat segments equal to the chant score in order to cast the spell. If it has a score of 0 (quick cast), you must cast it as an action on your turn. If the mage is still chanting on their turn, they can spend their other standard action to decrease the chant countdown by 1. \page

### Range Everyone occupies a 1 m square, it's assumed that this is played on a bit of a grid, either on a table, virtual tabletop or an excel spreadsheet. ## Health and Damage A player character has 5 health which is reduced if they take damage from an enemy, the environment or other such hazards. When you reach 2 health, you are **Bloodied**. A Bloodied charater gains a point of fatigue and gains an additional one each time they ???. When you reach 1 health, you are **Bleeding Out**. While bleeding out, a character can only take one of the following actions on their turn and gains a point of fatigue at the start of their turn. - Make an item interaction: retrieve an item from a belt pouch, flick a switch, pass an item, etc. - Crawl 1 m in a direction of their choice. - Speak a few pained words or make gestures. Falling to 0 health means that you are dead. #### Damage Types Most damage has no type, swords, axes, claws and arrows all deal regular damage. However, magic, items and abilities may deal Special damage types. - Fire. Burning, blazing and exploding effects. - Ice. Effects that freeze and chill. - Poison. Venoms and toxic effects that debilitate and harm. - Acid. Chemicals and substances that burn and corrode. - Tempest. Wind, water and thunder and lightning effects. Special Damage is resisted with Special Defence which ignores most regular armours. ## Fatigue Fatigue represents a character's energy wearing out over time through taking hard hits, being knocked out, expending lots of their mind, and performing exhausting work. For every five fatigue you gain, you gain a trait/condition. When you reach Fatigue equal to 10 times your level, you die. Mild Fatigue Conditions - Disadvantage/penalty on checks/attacks - Flat-footed/off guard unless you spend an action to stabilise Moderate Fatigue Conditions - Half speed - No reactions - Half damage/magic power/reduced mind Severe Fatigue Conditions - Only gain one action per turn - Take an extra point of damage when hit \page

# Exploring the Dungeon ## Travel As the levels of the dungeon are dangerous places, travel can often be difficult. However, characters and parties with a sufficient travel rating can descend through easier levels much quicker. A party's travel rating is equal to the sum of all member's levels, along with some other factors. A level's required travel rating is equal to its level. E.g. level 5 requires a travel rating of 5. Travel ratings can also be increased by strategies or abilities that make the party faster, more efficient, stealthier or more threatening. ## Senses and Concealment ### Sense Ranges The sense ranges are a person or monster's general awareness of their surroundings. **Very Close.** Held up to eye, ear etc. Must be this close for a minute or so to take a Investigation move on an item/thing. **Close.** Within 5 m. You are very aware of the things occuring next to you. You have advantage on Perception checks to notice targets trying to hide or sneak around you within your close range. **Medium.** Within 20 m. You can generally make out everything in your surroundings if you focus. **Far.** 20 m+. Past 20 m, it's harder to make things out, you gain a disadvantage to detect hidden targets in the far range. ### Concealment Concealment is features of an environment that make perceiving something more difficult. Each form of concealment must note what sense it obscures (sight, hearing, smell). **Light Concealment.** Light concealment makes perception harder. For each form of light concealment that obscures a certain sense, you gain a disadavantage on checks using that sense. **Heavy Concealment.** Heavy concealment makes perception exceptionally difficult. For each form of heavy concealment that obscures a certain sense, you gain three disadavantages on checks using that sense. Heavy concealment for hearing and smell is reduced to light concealment when the source of concealment is in the far sense range. ___ Below are some examples of concealment in relation to the sense they obscure. **Sight.** Physical obstructions and light can obscure vision. - Light concealment: dim light, foliage, fog or groups of people or monsters. - Heavy concealment: darkness, heavy snow or combatants within 1 m. **Hearing.** Sound and background noise can obscure a person's hearing. - Light concealment: murmuring in a tavern, fast flowing river, howling winds. - Heavy concealment: festivals, combat, waterfall, rowdy taverns. **Smell.** Other people and creatures as well as powerful smells in the environment can obscure smell. - Light concealment: groups of nearby people or monsters, food stalls, smoke. - Heavy concealment: wind blowing towards you, tight crowds. ##### Easier Perception If something is easily perceptible (large, distinct, loud, smelly) you gain advantage to perceive it, or three advantages if it is especially perceptible. It's easily percerptible if someone might mention so, and especially perceptible if people might stop what they're doing and comment on it. ### Cover Cover is a physical barrier that adds bonuses to your Defence against ranged attacks and dodge or defend checks, such as an upturned table, stalagmite, a wall, arrowslit, window, or people and monsters. Partial cover that covers half or more of a target's body grants advantage on Guard or Dodge checks. Full cover restricts attacks entirely. ##### Creatures as Cover A creature blocking line of sight grants partial cover to a creature of the same size or smaller. ### Stealth When you wish to act with subtlety or try to avoid notice, roll Agility. If a target is actively looking for you, they roll (choosing a sense and taking sense range and concealment into account). If your check is higher than theirs, you are hidden from them. **Undetected.** **Hidden.** #### Hidden Attacking a target you can sense while hidden grants you an advantage on attack rolls. ## Conditions **Flatfooted.** You cannot take out-of-turn actions while flatfooted. **Prone.** Lying on the ground. Attacks have advantage against you, and you have a disadvantage on attacks. Additionally, moving 1 m costs 2 m of movement. You can stand up by spending 3 m of movement. Enemies can spend an out of turn action to make one attack against you if you stand up next to them without taking the disengage option/action. **Blinded.** You cannot see. Sight perception checks automatically fail. Attacks are made against you at advantage. **Deafened.** You cannot hear. Hearing perception checks automatically fail. You act in one inititive segment lower. **Off-Guard.** Your dodge value is reduced to half your Agility modifier. (or something) \page

## Resting Resting in the dungeon is dangerous, especially the further down you go. Generally, there are only two forms of resting, quick rests and long rests. ### Quick Rest You take 5 or more minutes resting, not taking any laborous actions or engaging in combat. At the end of the 5 minutes, you regain hit points equal to your Vitality modifier and mind equal to your Magic modifier. You can continue a quick rest, every 5 minutes you rest you regain more hit points and mind. ### Long Rest You sleep for at least 8 hours. You regain all mind and hit points and reduce your Fatigue by your Vitality modifier (minimum 1). ## Formation When exploring the dungeon, a group is split into three general ranks: Vanguard - the front of the party that protects the rest, Centre Guard - the main strikers, and Rear Guard - usually mages, ranged combatants, and supporters. A group may also designate a leader. The rank a character is in when combat is initiated determines when they act. Barring special circumstances, monsters attack the vanguard first, which try to hold them off while the centre guard deals damage and slows them while the rear guard chants magic and supports the other ranks. ### Leadership A leader is usually the familia captain and they give directions during battle and generally try to keep a group in order. If the leader becomes off guard/dazed, their orders stop/no longer have an effect. #### Exploration Actions Exploration actions are usually performed over a longer period of time when travelling and not in combat. **Keeping Watch.** You keep a lookout for threats. Roll Perception for your distant sense range. **Forage.** You search for useful materials in the environment. Roll Survival for your close sense range. The DM should consult the materials tables in DM Guidance: Exploring the Dungeon for the appropriate level or area if they are unsure of what could be found. Find common items at low level, or double the amount at higher levels, or uncommon items. **Navagating.** You lead the group and keep them on track. Roll Survival/Navigation or add your bonus to the group's navigation roll to avoid being lost/getting there quickly. For every 5 above the TN, choose one. - Quickly, it takes half the time. - Quietly, you trigger half as many encounters. -x on the encounter roll. If you fail, you become lost and must choose one. - Loud. You attract monsters, roll an encounter and add x. - Slow. You take double the time to travel. - Tiring. Everyone takes a point of fatigue. **Scouting.** Detecting the enemy before they detect you. Determine how far ahead you wish to scout, (roll?) on a successful roll you spot the enemy before they spot you, on a partial success you get out but they're hot on your trail, on a fail they detect you before you detect them. ## Chases Whether running for your lives or hunting down the last escaped minotaur, chases are a staple of action, just as much as combat. ### Ranges Chase ranges are a bit different to the tactical, grid-like ranges in combat and are more general and differ according to the scale. **Scale** is the magnitude of the chase, from small chases through the dungeon or streets, to medium chases over a few hours to large scale chases over a few days or weeks. | Range | Small | Medium | Large | |:----:|:-------------| | Short | 0-5 m | | Medium | 6-10 m | | Long | 11-15 m | | Extreme| | | | | OR Range Increments, which you count, you say "I'm 7 range increments and run, so I chase them down to 5 range increments away" ### Phases Chases progress in phases, similar to turns in combat. First, the quarry makes their moves, then the pursuers act, and finally the DM announces complications. **Fatigue.** ### Actions You can take any action listed in the Other Actions, though these may be particularly pertinent. \page

## DM Guidance The Dungeon Master (DM) is the storyteller and referee of the game. They facilitate the game for the players by playing the monsters and Non-Player Characters (NPCs). ### Monsters The enemy of mortals since time began, monsters attack mortals on instinct alone, determined to kill mortals and gods that it comes across. Born from the mysterious dungeon's walls and floors, all monsters have a bluish crystal within their chest that has magical powers, giving the monsters life. If the magic stone is every broken or removed from their body, a monster immediately dies and their body turns to ash. Sometimes another part of a monster's body will stay behind once its magic stone has been removed, which means that the monster's stone stored some energy in another part of the body. This is called a 'drop' or 'drop item' which can be used by blacksmiths or artisans to craft items. The guild pays more for drop items, though many adventurers know they can get an even higher price by selling it directly to a familia. ### The Dungeon (Original) The great subterranean labyrinth is where the players battle monsters for their loot and experience, it has many levels and is split into four general sections. This dungeon is inspired by the original danmachi dungeon, however there is another in Variant Rules for a slightly different world that takes place long after the events of the series that may be more suited for ttRPGs. ##### The Upper Floors The 1st to 12th floors are usually described as the upper floors, where level 1s fight weak monsters such as killer ants, goblins and kobolds. ##### The Middle Floors These floors go from 13 to 24 and are significantly more difficult than the upper floors. It is highly recommended by guild advisors that adventurers have a party and are level 2 before venturing into the middle floors. Many more monsters appear in these floors which are stronger and come at the party in continuous waves, tiring them out and depleting their resources before moving in for the kill. ##### The Lower Floors From 25 to 36, the dungeon yet again increases in difficulty. Only high ranking adventurers and familias make it this low and can fight toe to toe with the monstrosities found here. ##### The Deep Floors After level 36, this section of the dungeon is known only as the Deep Floors. It is untouched and unknown except by the most powerful familias in Orario and indeed the world. The lowest level recorded is the 59th level, reached only by the most legendary familias. #### Monsters and Rewards Spoils of the dungeon! See how much excelia and valis your adventurers raked together on their latest dungoen run. **Excelia.** A monster rewards excelia equal to 10 times the level it was born on. **Magic Stones.** The value of magic stones are dependent on the size and level of the monster, though are usually valued at 500 times the level in valis. | Monster Size | Magic Stone Size | Cost | Weight | |:----|:-------|:-:|:-:| | Tiny - Small | Small | 500\*Level | 0.1 | Medium - Large | Medium | 1,000\*Level | 1 | Huge+ | Large | 2,000\*Level+ | 5 **Drops.** Drops are usually worth twice the regular amount of magic stones at the guild but can also be crafted into items or sold to outside buyers for a higher price, sometimes up to 10 or 50 times the amount the guild offers. The abilities are simplified as there isn't a whole lot that would be added by adding them all to a monster who dies in 3 turns. If an enemy is likely to improve their skills or be a larger or ongoing character in the game, it may be wise to create a more descriptive stat block. ##### Morale Morale is how likely a creature is to stop fighting when the odds turn against them. A creature's morale is made up of three parts, a modifier, trigger and reaction. The **trigger** determines when a morale check is rolled, the **modifier** is added to the morale check (if none is listed, the creature never checks morale) and the **reaction** is what the creature does when it fails the check. A DM can also judge that a creature checks morale at a different time or has a different reaction. To check morale, roll a d20 and add a creautre's morale modifier, which falls between -3 and +3. A creature succeeds on an 11 or higher and does not need to roll again this combat. On a failure, the creature follows its reaction. ##### Example Reactions Unless otherwise specified, most will attempt to retreat or rout. - Panic. The creature runs from battle as quickly as it can, dropping their weapons and focusing entirely on escaping battle. - Rout. The creature runs from battle, paying attention to their enemy's movements and possible attacks. - Retreat. The creature attempts to organise a retreat with their allies and carefully escape from battle. - Rage. The creature flies into a rage and attacks the creature closest to them without thought. - Betrayal. The creature betrays its allies and joins the side of the PCs. This is likely only taken by intelligent enemies. - Sacrifice. The creature throws itself into the middle of the enemy, attempting a last ditch effort. - Surrender. The creature lays down their weapons and admits defeat, sometimes begging for their lives. This is likely only taken by intelligent enemies. ### Running Combat The specific rules of combat (especially regarding players) can be found later on in this guidebook, however here general guidance can be found for the DM to make combat exciting and interesting (hopefully). #### Communicating the Situation The situation of combat refers to what is happening, what the combatants are doing and how they're reacting to each other. One way to make players change their strategies to to communicate what the enemies are doing or thinking. A short comment describing if the enemies are looking to redouble their efforts, focus a specific area, or pull out a new strategy can create the opportunity for new ideas. I recommend that you try to communicate the situation at the start of the combat round. #### Changing the Situation The situation should be changed frequently, or else combat may slow down and become less interesting. In a blank room, combatants attack each other until their health reaches 0 and unless there are other forces at work, this will remain true. **Changing the Goal:** The goal of combat refers to what the players want to get out of it. Usually this may just be progress or money and loot. The goal may also be connected to the fail state or preventing a setback. - A quest asks the players to target a specific type of monster. If the players encounter other monsters, they can weigh wasting resources and personal gain or saving resources to fulfil the quest. - Protect. The players must protect a person, group or location from attackers. - Collect. If a certain item or person must be collected or the players fail. - Exterminate. If the entirety of the enemy cannot be killed or some escape, the players fail. **Changing the Assumptions:** The assumptions are what the players believe about the combat. Generally they believe that they will live and be able to beat their opponent. However, some other assumptions can be interesting to play around with. - New enemies appear with different abilities forcing a change in strategy. - The enemies are dramatically different in power to the players (this should be used sparingly, usually you will want to have the players fighting at least equally powerful enemies). - Enemies come from another direction (like the behind). - Terrain favours the enemies or their usual strategies rather than the characters. #### Running Monsters Regular monsters born of the dungeon are animalistic and single-minded in their hate for mortals and surface folk. They usually can't figure out intricate tactics or lay traps. Intelligent monsters are extremely rare and treated as a very dangerous anomaly. \page

# Exploring the Dungeon Random encounters will make up the majority of dungeon encounters unless you want to have a pre-planned structure. It's fine to just skip the travel from the top of the dungeon to the current level as long as it's in the upper levels and jump straight into a fight. I've found that having the characters wander around for a while looking for monsters isn't very fun. ## New Levels When players descend to their desired level (either by fighting through enemies or having a high enough level) or reach a level their travel score doesn't allow them free access through, it's nice to set the scene. Describe the appearance of the dungeon floor, some special or unique features that might be noted and roll for a few encounters already on the level with the random tables. These encounters can be hinted at depending on the senses of the party, those with exceptional hearing might hear the sounds of monsters moving around or fighting, and those with an exceptional sense of smell may be able to sense a trail towards one of them if they passed through the area recently. ### Structuring a Dungeon Run It's always good to have an idea of how you wish a dungeon run to play out, even if you don't know exactly what monsters the players will encounter, it's good to know when you'd like encounters to occur. You can space regular combat encounters out with less combat focused encounters which might provide more of a social or moral challenge or otherwise change up the conditions of combat to keep adventurers on their toes and players interested. #### Non-Combat Encounters - A group of (1d4+1) adventurers harass a smaller adventurer (animal person, pallum or child). - Three adventurers torture a monster. - A first time adventurer or supporter with a broken knife has been cornered by some goblins. They reward the players with a coupon for potions (buy 2 get 1 free) at their familia's store. - A dead adventurer's gear is being picked over by some monsters. Two monsters have +2 DEF and one deals +2 damage. You gain a broken light breastplate and knife or 2,000v if you report it to the guild. - You come across a hole to another level of the dungeon. Monsters from the floor below come out and attack you. - An adventurer struggles with carrying their equipment. Helping requires a 12 Str check and rewards a bear trap or tent and a coupon to a supply store. A 15 Sneak check lets you steal a potion. - A group of monsters run past you (either away or towards something) and don't pay attention to you. ### Random Tables These tables will give encounters for specific level ranges. I discourage fudging the numbers too much as a random experience will give the true impression that the characters are in a dungeon with a will of its own, how they try to overcome it and survive is up to them. It also gives them a bit of a choice, retreat and come back later or try and fight to gain more excelia. That said, if you have less players, say 1-2, it may be wise to halve the combats to make it manageable. If you roll doubles, e.g. 11, 55, 88, roll again and add it to the encounter, the players have encountered a *monster party* which spawns on them! If an entry has a percentage in parenthesis, it means there is a chance you must roll again and add it to the encounter if it's not already in a monster party. #### Mixing Up Random Tables Random tables tend to feel tedious or repetitive after a while, especially if you're in a creativity lull or get suddenly hit with a block. To add more variety reaction tables and other details are often useful to add nuance to what might have just been a standard combat encounter. Reaction tables determine the encounter's initial attitude towards the party. Monsters usually have a -5 to this roll ##### Reactions | 2d6 | Reaction | |:----:|:-------------| | 2- | Hostile, Immediate Attack | | 3-5| Threatening | | 6-8| Neutral | | 9-11| Friendly, Cautious | | 12+ | Helpful or Useful | ##### Distance The distance away the encounter is can be rolled at the beginning of generating the dungeon level or when rolling random encounters. 1 = Monster party, appears immediately, 0-5 m 2 = Close, around a corner or down the corridor, around 10-15 m. 3 = Near, ### Special Features and Environment The dungeon is an amazing place, each group of floors having vastly different characteristics and environments and not to mention opportunities and resources. \page

## Upper Floors (1 - 12) The upper floors are where level 1 adventurers delve, sharpening their skills to reach level 2 and descend into the dangerous middle floors and beyond. Usually small monsters appear here, with the first larger class monsters appearing on levels 10 to 12. #### Level 1 - 5 Entering level 1, you are greeted with a wide hallway known as Beginner's Road. From level 1 to 5, weak monsters such as kobolds, goblins and dungeon lizards scurry around the wide corridors and rooms with light blue coloured walls and moss shedding soft light. Adventurers with a status of I to G usually spend time on these floors. ##### Special Features Levels 1 - 5 are usually sparse due to the volume of new adventurers that spend their time here. **Jack Bird.** A rare monster that looks like a rooster with fluffy yellow feathers. Although it isn't aggressive, it is incredibly fast, and runs away if it senses any enemies. Its drop item, which is guaranteed, is said to be worth at least 1,000,000 valis. **Easy.** Checks to navigate levels 1 - 5 are made with an advantage. Additionally, parties of less than four only encounter half the amount of monsters in combat encounters. ##### Environment Fights in these floors usually take place in a corridor 5 - 6 m wide, or a room around 10 m by 10 m. The ceiling is around 3 m high. The Guild strongly advises that adventurers have at least rank F in their status before delving into the 6th level. ##### Special Features ##### Environment Corridors are now only 3 - 4 m wide, with rooms ranging from 4 m by 4 m to at most 8 m by 8 m. #### Level 10 - 12 In these levels, all corridors disappear as the landscape turns to a wide open field of bleached grass and an eerie mist hides what lies ahead and attacks can come from any direction. Larger monsters such as orcs and hard armoureds and flying monsters take advantage of this wider area with wide and deadly attacks. It's recommended that level 1 adventurers have statuses of B in their basic abilities, though most of the adventurers on this floor are parties preparing to head into the deadly middle floors. ##### Special Features **Fog.** There is light concealment (sight) past 10 m throughout the levels. **Landforms.** The dead trees can be picked up by orcs or sliverbacks and used as weapons, granting them the following power. Landform Clubs. Taking an action to pull a landform out of the ground, the monster's reach increases by 1 m and their attack power is increased by 2. They can take their full turn to sweep, dealing their attack power to all targets within their reach. After sweeping, the landform is destroyed. A landform can be destroyed before it is picked up by dealing 20 damage to it. ##### Environment In levels 10-12, the environment is open with a ceiling upwards of 30 m. Dead trees and rock formations can act as light cover, though can often also be used as landforms. There are usually 2-3 landforms for every 10 m by 10 m square on the level. Areas: Hills, Forests (landforms), escarpments/cliffs, pantry (water), rivers ##### Monsters The larger environment of these levels means that the monsters similarly increase in size and take advantage of the increased verticality, hidden just behind the mysterious fog and ready to strike. **Orcs.** Large monsters with pig-like features, orcs usually gather in groups of 3-8. They are much more powerful than an adventurer of the same level, however their speed and intelligence is greatly below average. **Hard Armoureds.** Medium type monsters that bear resemblances to armadillos. They have exceptionally high defence and can perform a deadly roll attack that bowls over all in their way. Their underbellies are their weakness, devoid of their signiture armour. **Imps.** Small monsters similar to goblins, their malice turned up to 11. Cunning and cruel, they gain a boost in morale for each drop of blood spilt. Imps rarely attack head on, instead remaining hidden in the fod and trailing unsuspecting parties until they let their guard down after a battle to strike. **Bad Bats.** Tiny flying monsters that stay out of reach and shoot projectiles from the air. They often attack in conjunction with other monsters, firing into the melee or back line while adventurers are distracted. They have a tendency to also hit their allies if tricked, however. **Silverback.** A huge monster; stronger and smarter than orcs and with deadly speed, it is usually found solo. **Infant Dragon.** The first boss type monster of the dungeon. ## NPCs and Social Interaction Social interaction is the act of interacting socially with other characters in the game world. It is distinct from roleplaying in that roleplaying is simply the act of playing a role. You can play a role without socially interacting, and you can socially interact without playing a role. ### Running NPCs NPCs (non-player characters) are characters in the world that the DM controls and acts for. They are not the main characters, but more of a supporting cast for the players. A few types of NPCs are explained below. NPCs are usually made up of two things. A Drive, what they want, and a Personality, how they act and how they persue their Drive. #### NPC Types An NPC type is the role a certain NPC plays in the story, what purpose do they serve in relation to the world or the players? Not all NPCs need to have a type, but important ones that players are likely to interact with often may benefit from one. Each NPC has **resources** (the physical extent an NPC can help or hinder the PCs) and an **attitude** towards the players (the psychological extent an NPC can help or hinder). These types are able to changed, the things they give, want and the exact conflict or method of defeat should be changed depending on the individual NPC, these are just standard examples. **Mentor.** The mentor instructs PCs and gives them advice or information they may need as well as wise words and supportive guidance. The mentor may become disappointed or angry with characters who don't follow their advice or deliberately go against it. The mentor may be a guild advisor, an older or more experienced adventurer, a teacher or a parent or older relative. - Gives: Advice, wisdom and information - Wants: Adherence to instruction **Merchant.** The merchant provides players with items and equipment they may need and may give them special benefits for being good customers or providing interesting materials or opportunities to promote their business. - Gives: Items, equipment, goods or services - Wants: Loyal customers, high quality merchandise, greater earning opportunities **Socialite.** Someone who is more likely to be found chatting it up at a party than ever setting foot in the dungeon, the socialite is a character that has many connections both high and low. - Gives: Access to certain circles, connections or people - Wants: Improved image or future favours **Scholar.** A person of learning with a wealth of knowledge. The scholar often provides the players with historical or academic information, differing from the mentor in that their advice comes from traditional learning rather than experience and often persue more personal goals. - Gives: Academic knowledge and advice - Wants: Information to further their goals (research, uncovering secrets, etc.) **Accomplice.** Someone who helps the PCs as they work towards a common goal, their personal feelings about the PCs may be a point of conflict. - Gives: Support towards a certain goal - Wants: Progress towards their goal ##### Enemies If an NPC is more inclined to pose a problem or hinderance to the PCs, you may consider defining what the actual conflict they provide is and how they could be defeated. As opposed to a monster, an enemy NPC is likely to provide prolonged conflict and can't (necessarily) be solved with violence. **Rival.** Rather than providing conflict for the purpose of malice or conflicting goals, a rival simply wishes to be better than the PCs as a competition, sometimes for the sake of a reward or to simply be better. A rival could be underhanded and dishonest, where they actively try to set the PCs back in order to come out ahead, or they could be more fair and friendly where they actually encourage the PCs to improve for the sake of competition. - Conflict: A race to grow and achieve the same thing, be it money, power, skill, favour and so forth. - Defeat: End the competition, either through winning or losing. **Disgruntled.** The PCs may have offended or upset the NPC who now holds a grudge and often displays their dissatisfaction outwardly and loudly. This leads to hardships for the PCs, especially if the disgruntled is powerful or highly connected. - Conflict: Balancing character goals with satisfying the NPC's wants and not incurring their wrath. - Defeat: Dismantle their connections, come to an agreement or make up for the harm dealt to the NPC. **Antagonist.** The big bad, their plans are usually evil, destructive or would significantly impact the characters and their plans or desires. - Conflict: Stopping the antagonist's goals before they come to fruition. - Defeat: Dismantle the antagonist's plans, taking things they need or reducing them to a state where they can no longer carry out their plans. \page

##### Attitude and Resources An NPC's attitude towards a PC or group of PCs can usually be plotted on a continuum as such. As players take actions to personally connect with NPCs or resolve tensions, you may consider changing their attitude towards friendly. Generally an NPC only cherishes PCs after lots of interaction or deep, personal connection with great empathy. Types of resources: Wealth, Connections, Skills, Information, Labour | Resources | | |:----|:-------| | Prosperous (100%) | The NPC has a great amount of assets to provide to the players and can always provide them help (whether or not they want to is a different matter). | Comfortable (80%) | The PCs can get what they want most of the time, persuading the NPC may be another challenge. The NPC is able to help 80% of the time. | Humble (50%) | While their resources may not be in excess, the NPC has a humble stash of resources. The NPC is able to give the PCs what they want 50% of the time. | Sparse (30%) | Their resources are few and generally unhelpful. The NPC is only able to give the PCs exactly what they need 30% of the time. | Meagre (10%) | The NPC has few resources and is commonly unable to provide the resources the PCs may require. They only have a 10% chance of being able to provide help or opportunities. ### When to Use this Whenever a player wishes to get help from an NPC, observe their attitude and resources. Merchant. Attitidue. Cherished: A merchant may provide small complimentary items upon visiting and provide moderate discounts on items. Friendly: After completing a favour or gaining rapport with a merchant, they may provide small discounts or deals. Neutral: \page

### Orario The dungeon city, a booming metropolis powered by the magic stone trade around the world. In the centre of the city is Babel, the tower built by the gods which rises high into the sky which acts as a 'lid' to the dungeon, stopping monsters from escaping into the city and outside world. From Babel, eight main roads split the town at the compass bearings. **The Guild** The closest thing to an official organisation in the city, the guild holds complete control over the dungeon's economic benefits being the only organisation legally allowed to purchase magic stones recovered from the dungeon. All adventurers and familias are registered by the guild for their and the city's safety. In return, the guild offers familias advice and information on the dungeon to prepare them for its dangers and come back alive. Aside from dungeon business, the guild also holds familias who break rules accountable, collects their taxes and manages many of the city's other affairs. **Adventurers** The ones who venture into the dungeon, adventurers are given a falna, or status, by a deity after being accepted into their familia. They exchange the magic stones of monsters for money and gain excelia to improve their abilities. **The Gods** Coming to the lower world to experience the highs and lows of mortal life, the gods seek entertainment and fulfilment. They form familias to gain money and live in luxury, though some are more successful than others. All gods have the ability to see through the lies and deception of mortals, however it is harder for them to determine the lies of other gods. #### Making your own Familia The familia surrounds its God who provides the adventurers with a 'Falna,' the ability to gain excelia and superhuman abilities. You may consider making your own god or picking one from a real life pantheon. Remember that *your* Orario might not have the same gods that the canon story has, or they may have different roles or appearances. When first starting the game, you may wonder how the individual characters came to be apart of the current familia. Here are some suggestions that you can roll on or choose from, with additional options in the categories below. Also delves into negative bioessentialism. ### Racial Basic Ability Increases Either remove racial basic ability increases or allow 'floating' increases that a player can assign at character creation. At character creation, assign a d10 and a d8 to any two basic ability increases of your choice instead of having them determined by race. **Pros:** Allows players to play off-type more easily and create a more unique character or remove some barriers to optimisation. Also reduces bioessentialism if your players are concerned with this. **Cons:** Races lose some identity and strays from Danmachi lore. ### Negative Racial Traits #### Amazon Choose one. ***Lustful.*** A group or demographic of people of your choice (with DM discretion) have advantage on social checks against you. ***Dull.*** ***Direct.*** The most direct approach is usually the best. Gain a penalty if you wait around too long/gain a bonus if you act quickly. #### Beastkin Choose one. ***Primal.*** Don't get higher/complex subjects. ***Cute.*** You have a -5 penalty to Fear, but a +2 bonus to Fellowship. ***Prideful.*** #### Dwarf Choose one. ***Gruff and Rude.*** ***Dragon's Greed.*** ***Stubborn.*** When you fail a check, you need to spend more time on it? #### Elf Choose one. ***Haughty.*** You have a -2 penalty to interact socially with anyone other than another elf. ***Touch Complex.*** If you are touched by someone other than an elf, you must make a willpower check or make a non-lethal attack against them. Critical failures occur more often and you have a -3 willpower/will to live. ***Weak.*** Your small muscles have a hard time carrying gear that other races find more simple. You cannot carry or use items that have a carry value of 4 or more. ## Trait Variants ### Custom Traits ### Negative Traits When picking traits, you may find it interesting to pick some traits a character is especially bad at. Instead of adding a bonus when rolling, you roll with no modifier - even if it would relate to a basic ability. Invoking a negative trait is entirely optional, however doing so grants you advantage/inspiration/meta currency that you can spend later. ### Super Traits ## Durability Variants ### Punishing Durability If you prefer durability to be more punishing, you can force weapons to develop a Crack when an attacker rolls a 1 on the d20 when attacking. This does have the effect of missing being more punishing and generally might not be very fun for those that rely on weapons. Armour can either be reduced in durability when the wearer is struck by a critical hit, or they can expend durability to ignore the critical and instead take the attack's regular effects. ### Remove Durability ## Magic Variants ### Ignis Fatuus ### Choosing Magic pros, cons This can easily be done, the main idea with rolling the spell was to create a bit of a uncertancy to choosing magic during character creation. Allowing the players to choose their own magic is perfectly acceptable if you are alright with it. ## Downtime ### Wild Monsters (Taming) ### Monster Personality ## Variant Dungeon (+Lore) The original dungeon is slightly awkward to use in a ttRPG, there are no real objectives to it aside from 'defeat monsters and increase your power when you leave.' For a possibly more engaging dungeon delving experience I wanted to create a variant dungeon that still slots into the original lore. The events of the series take place as normal, however to the characters playing this they occurred long ago. The final great beast, the one-eyed black dragon, was defeated by a white-haired hero and his companions, along with a majority of Orario in a spectacular battle as the dragon attempted to lay siege to the city. However, in the wake of this battle the dungeon seemed to 'dry up,' monsters ceasing to be born, causing the magic stone trade to grind to a halt. Orario fell with its economic backbone ripped out so instantly, perhaps it could be said that the dragon had some measure of success in its siege. Adventurers scattered, finding work as soldiers or mercenaries, though many quit, the spark of adventure dying alongside the dungeon. The gods wandered about the lower world, slightly unsure of what to do now that their main avenue for gaining followers was lost. Some returned to heaven, others stayed to enjoy the end of the war against monsters and the peace the followed but they were few and far between. The empty halls of the dungeon slowly began to crumble and grow old, filled with more mundane insects and plants than monsters, it had been defeated and offered nothing more, reduced to a simple hole in the ground. One day with almost no warning, the dungeon was revived. A mighty earthquake shook the remains of Orario, toppling the tower for it to destroy the south-west section of the city (or whichever one you like really). As the dust settled, people began to slowly appear around the city, cries of a dungeon alive and well spreading across the globe, reigniting the spark of adventure.
