\page # A Rare, Reclusive Species

Deep within the archives of the most comprehensive libraries known to mortals, there are stories written of strange, uncatalogued dragons stalking forests not far from the coastlines. Most sages would only be able to offer a footnote's worth of information on them, as they have seldom been caught sight of, let alone interacted with. Even denizens of the Undardark, where they make their homes, have scarcely heard of them. Most sages only know of them after encountering their spies and emissaries-- but should one venture too near to their colonies, they may be greeted by the scrabbling of claws, the chatter of reptilians, and the glow of a thousand irises...

### Peridrake Colonies `` ` ` ``Peridrakes make their lairs in massive underground colonies, often situated close to saltwater (or occasionally freshwater) bodies in order to supplement their diets with aquatic creatures. Curiously, their colonies have only been found in forests where large amounts of ficus trees grow, suggesting that figs may be a delicacy to them. Their homes are also marked by hilly or mountainous terrain formed by colossal muck piles-- a byproduct of their colonies' extensive tunneling. peridrake colonies are exceedingly rare; as little as one colony may exist in any given world, owing to the species' tendency to consolidate their numbers and extend their tendrils from the safety of their veritable fortresses. There is no practical limit to the depths a peridrake colony will delve, as their own thermophilic physiology encourages them to seek out sources of heat. Oftentimes, a peridrake colony will outfit its draconic citizens with magic items that magnify their natural resistance to fire or even turn it into an immunity, which takes considerably less resources due to their bodies' affinity to such conditions. At their most advanced state, a peridrake colony will eventually extend into the asthenosphere, where the plastic deformation of rock makes it impossible to build structures or dig stable tunnels without the use of otherworldly or magically enhanced materials. This is further compounded by the relief of pressure on the magma in the world's mantle, which could trigger spontaneous volcanic activity. For this reason, peridrakes often lead the construction of these advanced colonies with boreholes that pump magma into areas where they would be more useful. Much of an advanced colony's infrastructure comes to revolve around geothermal power, with even waste disposal usually being handled by dumping it into a magma chamber.

\page ### The Anatomy of a Colony The entrance to a peridrake colony is marked by a gaping hole in the ground, measuring around 100 feet across and extending thousands of feet down. There are markings etched into the rocks which show that these burrows were made by large burrowing creatures, and display fresh claw markings as the elusive peridrakes come out to hunt and gather. A constant updraft betrays a significant source of heat at the bottom, but no light can reach it. If an explorer drops a torch down the hole, the torch will continue to fall until it becomes a speck of light and disappears from view. Further down, over 300 feet from the opening of the massive vertical shaft, one can barely see the outline of oversized drift tunnels branching out along the shaft; it takes a lot of rope and sophisticated climbing gear for most outsiders to intrude upon even the highest of these tunnels. Only a very few parties have ever ventured into the drifts of a colony, which are carved deep into the bedrock with strong silicate fingers. Given the climate in which peridrakes build their homes, the air becomes increasingly humid as water runs down deeper into the colony. The uppermost drifts are the most well-documented, being the most accessible, but exploration parties soon realize there are no artificial lights in a peridrake colony; once one leaves the light of the main shaft, exploration parties are left in total darkness. Those who brave the oppressive dark most often find that the upper drifts open up into large spaces not unlike a room-and-pillar mine. These spaces often have an array of crafted furnishings, apparently created for large creatures, which serve as worktables. The tools found here are associated with the processing of natural resources found on the surface world, such as butchering, preserving, smelting, carpenting, weaving, and even accounting. To date, however, no plunder or finished products have been found on this level; it is widely thought that Peridrakes take their products further underground immediately after being processed, or as soon as they detect an intruder. The latter idea has been gaining popularity after the discovery of smaller, most often hidden "escape shafts" leading deeper underground. Although peridrakes can be frustratingly elusive, even in the upper drifts of their own home, the likelihood of an encounter with one increases exponentially as one descends further down the main shaft, or into any of the smaller shafts. It is here, over a mile from the surface, that the sound of water can be heard trickling, from both the surface's runoff and from the water table. Additionally, various slime molds and small glowing fungi begin to appear deeper into the layer. The drift tunnels are described as being more elaborate, forming vaulted ceilings and canals with complex networks between storehouses, gathering halls, resting chambers, kitchens, and lavatories. Being a residential and commercial hub, it is here that most parties are halted by the draconic denizens of the colony-- especially if they should come near their storehouses or personal chambers. The majority of cross-cultural exchange has occured at this level, except under circumstances which would require an audience with the leaders of the colony, such as requesting a rare magic ritual or striking an arcane pact with the Broodlords.

\page `` ` ` ``Those seeking the mystical prowess of the colony's magi are taken deeper into the colony, where the colony's unique flora become increasingly large, complex, and bizarre. At 3 to 5 miles beneath the surface, the neat, chiseled middle layer gives way to stalactited ceilings and rough-hewn floors as water helps to carve out the cavernous expanses of the lower layer. Branching off from this level are passages into the Underdark, often leading to hidden areas on the colony's border. Hot springs, cisterns, vaults, libraries, guilds, proving grounds, groves of strange flora, and even three-dimensional farms can be found in the grand atria of this level. However, it is oppressively hot and humid here; for every hour spent on this level, non-plant creatures which do not have resistance or immunity to fire damage must make a DC 15 Constitution save or suffer one level of exhaustion; a creature makes this save with advantage if they have spent at least 1 day progressively acclimating to the environment. Due to the difference in air pressure, portals connecting to this layer subject everything within 20 feet of them to the effects of a warding wind spell. Creatures which teleport directly between this layer and the surface must make a DC 20 Constitution save or be poisoned for one minute and take 2d4 bludgeoning damage, or half as much on a successful save. For those fortunate few who manage to win an audience with the Souldrakes or the Broodlords, they are taken over 10 miles underground to the bottom layer of the colony. Branching off from this level are passages into the deepest reaches of the Underdark, also known as the Lowerdark. Portals connecting the colony to other planes of existence are also rumored to be found there, while grand temples and mausoleums of solid stone pay homage to figures unknown to anyone outside the colony. The temples serve as the living quarters of the Souldrakes and the Broodlords, and are often connected to nurseries, where peridrake eggs are stored and incubated using the natural heat of the colony's depths. Even the volcanic thermals are exploited here, to help the wyrmlings learn to fly at the earliest possible age. At these depths, it is possible to find magma pools and forges, to say nothing of the debilitating heat, humidity, and pressure which brings most creatures to their knees. Those who are not native to this level are typically given a special spelunking suit which, through magic or technology, hermetically seals its wearer from the extreme environment. For every minute spent on this level, creatures which do not have resistance or immunity to fire damage must make a DC 20 Constitution save or suffer one level of exhaustion; a creature makes this save with advantage if they have spent at least 3 days progressively acclimating to the environment. Portals connecting to this layer subject everything within 20 feet of them to the effects of a wind wall spell. Creatures which teleport directly between this layer and the surface are immediately struck with barotrauma, and must make a DC 25 Constitution save or be poisoned for one hour and take 8d4 bludgeoning damage, or half as much on a successful save. Finally, non-acclimated creatures in this layer take 1 point of bludgeoning damage per round, and all creatures take 1d4 points of fire damage per round. *For real-world examples of trauma caused by sudden changes in pressure, see the Oceangate Incident and the Byford Dolphin Incident.*

\page ### Empire of the Endless `` ` ` ``Members of the peridrake species do not experience ageing like other dragons; they reach the "Adult" age category and then cease all further age progression, becoming biologically immortal. With only one breeding pair per colony, they are able to sustain their numbers in a controlled manner, although the Broodlords can produce up to roughly 3,600 offspring per year at maximum efficiency. Sages speculate that these prolific immortals have not overrun the Underdark because they have either stopped breeding after a point, experienced massive die-offs in the past, or simply didn't exist as a species until fairly recently. ### Colorful Markings and Behavior `` ` ` ``While the majority of their scales are silvery-white, the supple flesh and lustrous markings of peridrakes include a wide array of dark, rich colors. These include various shades of ruby, amber, hematite, jade, sapphire, and amethyst. The alien locomotion of a Peridrake is distinctly avian, like a six-legged bird. Peridrakes use their long necks to stabilize their heads, often using head bobbing instead of eye saccades while walking. This increases the stability of their vision, allowing them to make out finer details in their dark habitat. ### Sensitive and Responsive `` ` ` ``Peridrakes possess a suite of senses that allow them to spot targets as easily as their innately supernatural cousins, the True Dragons. The first and most striking of their sensory abilities is a second, serpentine head at the end of their tail, which provides 360-degree vision as well as autonomous limb movement. Their large, sensitive eyes can illuminate targets at close distances with a ring of bioluminescent cells on their iris; a black sclera surrounds each irises to prevent the light from leaking into the retina. In bright light, these bioluminescent cells go dormant, leaving a pair of inky black orbs until the peridrake enters a dark environment again. In contrast to their eyes, a peridrake's sense of hearing and smell are relatively mundane-- capable of hearing a wide range of frequencies and distinguishing between smells, but not sensitive enough to be on par with a True Dragon's. They have no ears to speak of; they only have depressions in the sides of their heads, the bases of which are their tympanic membranes. A peridrake does have an excellent sense of taste, however, and can analyze the contents of its meals with its prehensile proboscis-- both inside and out. Running along the spine of a peridrake is a bimodal lateral line with both tympanic membranes and water canals, which can detect vibrations in both air and water. This ability to pick up vibrations with its entire body offsets the dragon's mediocre hearing, giving it a blindsense as powerful as a True Dragon's. When injured, peridrakes exhibit a disturbingly high pain tolerance; what few sages know of their physiology speculate that they may not react to pain due to their heightened regenerative capabilities, ensuring the individual's survival even after grievous injury. Additionally, peridrakes possess phenomenal reflexes that allow them to avoid harm, whereas most True Dragons would rely more on their armored scales to deflect attacks. These responses to danger are further enhanced by a peridrake's proprioception, which grant it superb dexterity for a dragon.

### Bred to Last `` ` ` `` `` ` ` ``Peridrakes are polyextremophiles capable of surviving extreme heat, cold, pressure, toxicity, and disease. Their bodies do not respond normally to these forces, which also makes them unusually resilient in combat. Their flesh slowly melts when it should burn right off, their heated bodies keep sources of cold from penetrating their hide, their black gem-like bones are made with unusually strong minerals, and their tissues efficiently filter and rejuvenate from harmful substances. While they do regenerate slower than more renowned species, their ability is far more thorough and cannot be bypassed, such as by using fire or acid on trolls. Instead, a fallen peridrake will enter a state of cryptobiosis to conserve energy while its wounds slowly heal. Damaged areas do not form scar tissue, but instead create a "macrophage cap" that aggressively breaks down and absorbs nutrients from any foreign object which comes into contact with it. This means that in desperate situations, such as when the body runs out of nutrients for regeneration or a new peridrake is attempting to form from a severed body part, it is possible to continue the process under the right conditions. There are even reports of blood splatters attempting to form a new peridrake, or even microscopic traces that were missed when the peridrake's body was destroyed. To effectively kill a peridrake, there are two methods. The first method is to completely destroy the body on the cellular level and scour any bloodstains, which must be done thoroughly and methodically. Some of the most effective methods include cremating the body in an oven and incinerating contaminated surfaces, submerging the body in acid and washing contaminated surfaces in acid, disintegrating the body and blood with necrotic energy or magical force, and even render them inert with certain forms of radiant energy. The second method is to subject the peridrake to a death effect such as spirit shroud or power word kill, which will immediately kill it on the cellular level. This method does not destroy a peridrake's gut flora, which can create an environmental hazard at a later time, but the dragon itself will not come back. Peridrake colonies will often clean up the area around fallen peridrakes, as the invasive ecosystem created from their bodies can provide clues to their nature. In some cases, simply destroying a peridrake's brain is sufficient to defeat it, as the memories of that dragon will not return unless if it was a sufficiently powerful spellcaster. For these peridrakes, they will most often forget their old lives and go feral, which makes them considerably easier to deal with later. A colony will often hunt down and capture feral peridrakes in order to reintegrate them with society, as their regenerative properties allow for adults to learn languages and skills as quickly as wyrmlings. On the other hand, colonies will not suffer the capture of peridrakes by others, and have been known to destroy entire cities for the sake of recovering their lost brethren. In the minds of the secretive peridrakes, it is better to erase a whole civilization than to let their own species become public knowledge.

### Peridrake Hoards `` ` ` `` `` ` ` ``Like true dragons, peridrakes are known to amass collections of things which are significant to them. Each peridrake has their own idea of what items are significant enough to create a hoard out of, but metal currencies, gems, jewelry, and magic items are as universal among peridrakes as they are among true dragons. Other common items found within a peridrake hoard include geodes, books, macabre objects, preserved specimens, statues, and even dormant constructs. The class and profession of a peridrake often plays a significant role in the types of items hoarded by a member of the species. For example, Broodlords are known for building elaborate mausoleums to house the remains of their honored young, and frequently hoard things which remind them of their progeny, from historical records to jewelry crafted from eggshells. Souldrakes most often hoard sacred artifacts, items blessed with their own power, and even relics plundered from the temples of other religions. Spelldrakes prefer to hoard artifacts of a more arcane variety, and are the most likely to collect vast libraries of forgotten and forbidden lore. Sporedrakes have a penchant for hoarding more organic items, including living creatures that tend to their hoard's prized specimens, but can also be found hoarding relics similar to Souldrakes. Lastly, Bonedrakes are the most drawn to macabre collections, frequently mounting the grisly trophies of anything they can't directly wear on their person, but they are also the most likely to hoard objects plundered from faraway lands. As a peridrake comes of age and advances in station, its tastes may change, resulting in a surplus of defunct items in its hoard which it may be willing to part with. This is further exacerbated by the population densities found within a colony of peridrakes, which may compel them to give up less valuable items to their subordinates to save space. This frequently occurs when a peridrake receives a better version of an item already in its hoard. It is not uncommon for a young peridrake to inherit much of its hoard from members of older broods, nor is it uncommon for a peridrake's humanoid servants to be allowed to pick out items that their master no longer cares for.

>### New Disease: "Periflesh" `` ` ` ``Due to the immense regenerative capabilities of peridrakes, upon being separated from their bodies, their flesh can behave more like an ooze than a piece of tissue or an organ. In this "feral" state, the dragon's flesh will ravenously consume all available nutrients from its surroundings like a plague of invasive fungi or mold. If consumed by another creature, a peridrake's body can inflict a horrific flesh-eating disease known as "Periflesh." Affected creatures see their bodies consumed and repurposed, slowly forming a new peridrake as they subsist off of the creature's own body. In the terminal stages of this condition, a creature's skin will turn alabaster as a new wyrmling slowly begins to sprout from their body. > >If a creature bites a peridrake or consumes its uncooked flesh, it must make a DC 30 Constitution saving throw or be infected with Periflesh. After that, it must make a DC 20 Constitution saving throw at the start of each day, or take 1 point of damage to their Strength score and 2 points of damage to their Constitution score. Creatures which are immune to disease instead have advantage on these saving throws; a creature cannot recover from this disease without the use of a Greater Restoration spell or other magic. If either ability score reaches 0, the creature dies, and a wyrmling will sprout from its body, finishing gestation in 3d4 weeks. The number of wyrmlings produced double for every size category above medium that the body belongs to.

### Peridrake Names `` ` ` ``Peridrakes have personal names given at birth, which are often derived from Draconic names. peridrakes hatched during the same year are often segregated into age groups known as "Broods." Such groupings of peers, known as "Broodmates," often give each other endearing nicknames to further distinguish them from the myriad other dragons which can live in a single colony. They may also have titles signifying a notable trait or accomplishment associated with that individual; a Peridrake's Brood name and title can appear in both Common and Undercommon. Finally, a peridrake is given a suffix denoting what Brood it belongs to, which are numbered in chronological order from the year of the colony's founding. A peridrake's full name might not have a Brood name or a title, which means the length of a full name can range anywhere from "Daar of the Fourth" to "Syghaeleolth-Shroomsinger lil Ssissilluk-Ik'tarn of the Three-Thousand-Seven-Hundred-Thirty-Ninth."

...Needless to say, most peridrakes are only called by one of their names.

### Growth and Starvation `` ` `` ``Although colonies are well-supplied and well-maintained, there is always the possibility that a great calamity (or opportunity) may cause a peridrake colony to change its survival strategies. To facilitate this, peridrakes possess a unique ability to change their size in response to food availability. If food is scarce, a peridrake's body will break down and gradually remodel itself into a smaller, more sustainable form. If food is plenty, a peridrake will experience a growth-spurt, allowing it to secure larger quantities of resources so the colony may be at a competitive advantage against outsiders. > ### Regional Effects > `` ` ` ``When peridrakes form a colony, their collective actions have a profound effect on the surrounding landscape. Their presence creates one or more of the following effects: > > - Subterranean beasts reproduce rapidly and thrive in the cave networks within 12 miles of the colony. Foraging in these caves and their bodies of water yields twice the usual amount of food. > - The colony's entrances are surrounded by collapsed tunnels and barren mountains of slag and tailings, which dominate the surrounding landscape. Everything within 6 miles of the colony is considered to be difficult terrain. > - All divination spells within 1 mile of the colony cease functioning, except if they were cast by a peridrake. If any other creature attempts to cast a divination spell, it must either cast the spell at 9th level or succeed on a DC 19 ability check using their spellcasting ability. > ### Lair Actions > `` ` ` ``On initiative count 20 (losing initiative ties), adult peridrakes take a lair action to cause one of the following effects; the effect cannot be used by any peridrake for two rounds in a row: > > - Part of the ceiling collapses above one creature that the dragon can see within 120 feet of it. The creature must succeed on a DC 15 Dexterity save or take 10 (3d6) bludgeoning damage for every 10 feet the debris falls and be buried. The buried target is restrained, knocked prone, and unable to breathe. A creature can take an action to make a DC 10 Strength check, ending the buried state on a success. > - Earthen spikes erupt from the ground in a 20-foot radius area adjacent to the dragon. The area becomes difficult terrain until the spikes are manually cleared away, which takes one minute per 5-foot square. A creature that moves through the affected area takes 1d8 piercing damage for every 5 feet it moves there. Creatures that are knocked prone in the area also take this damage. > - The dragon causes any number of entrances or passageways within 120 feet of it to disappear and be replaced by a stone wall, or it restores entrances or passageways previously removed in this way. \page ___ ___ >

The attack ignores damage resistance and treats damage immunity as resistance, unless if an affected creature is incorporeal, an Elemental, or a Construct. Each space in the area that contains any amount of exposed water causes an explosion which deals 13 (5d4) fire damage in a 5-foot radius. Finally, the fire lingers for an additional round, dealing 8 (3d4) fire damage to any creature which enters the affected area for the first time or starts its turn there. > > ### Legendary Actions >The dragon can take 3 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action option can be used at a time and only at the end of another creature's turn. ### Description `` ` ` ``After roughly 6 months of incubation, peridrakes hatch from their eggs and begin their lives as wyrmlings. Like True Dragons, they are remarkably precocious, but they do not have any innate knowledge such as language or mystical arts. Wyrmlings are taught the basics of living in a colony within a week of being hatched, and learn their first language by the time they are a year old. Peridrakes are born with translucent skin that blisters in the presence of harsh light, so they are kept in the lowest layers of a colony where they perform menial labor, such as caring for eggs and younger hatchlings.

### Description `` ` ` ``By the time they are 5 years old, peridrake wyrmlings will have reached their adolescent stage, where they will continue growing and maturing until they reach the age of 10. Their minds continue to rapidly expand as they learn about the trades, disciplines, and social mores of their colony. Young peridrakes can be found on every level of the colony, but almost never appear outside of it unless if they are under the direct supervision of adults; they most often serve as apprentices to adults whose trades they will eventually make a living with.

\page ### Description `` ` ` ``By the time a peridrake reaches adulthood, its scales will be thick enough to block its translucent skin from the effects of radiant damage, allowing them to fearlessly venture beyond the colony when needed. Most adult peridrakes are observed with few adornments, which may include satchels, saddlebags, simple necklaces, and even body paint. They are the most commonly sighted type of peridrake both inside and outside their colonies, although they do not venture too far from their home. The majority of peridrakes are analogous to commoners and gentry in humanoid societies, and fulfill a multitude of roles such as hunting, gathering, farming, crafting, building, repairing, selling goods, and raising young. When forced to fight, they will use attacks similar to that of a true dragon's, relying on their beastly power and cunning to overwhelm and rout their enemies.

### Specialists and Spellcasters `` ` ` ``The true power of true dragons lies with their constant development, with the oldest eventually maturing into ancient dragons, or even great wyrms. The colossal size and power of these true dragons is often sufficient to completely overpower monsters and adventuring parties which threaten them, but peridrakes must rely on finesse and skill to achieve the same results. Consequently, the older and more experienced members of a peridrake colony frequently gain levels in a character class with spellcasting abilities. A peridrake may even evolve to more spellcasting-intensive classes as they take on positions of greater authority, as their mental prowess often becomes the focus of their new livelihood. These can have a tremendous effect on the threat posed by a peridrake spellcaster. ### Description `` ` ` ``Peridrakes belonging to the military caste are known as "Bonedrakes," so-called because of the bone jewelry they fashion for themselves from creatures they have killed. Although not as commonly sighted outside the colonies as ordinary peridrakes are, sightings of Bonedrakes have been reported on the other side of the world from their colonies, and even in other planes of existence. Bonedrakes are analogous to warriors and knights in humanoid societies, and are recruited from zealous peridrakes who show an affinity for violence. They often spend their time guarding the colony, patrolling and scouting, hunting dangerous game, or even competing in gladiatorial games. In combat, they have most of the same stats and abilities as ordinary peridrakes. However, they also function as if they are 10th-level Rangers of the Hunter conclave.

### Description `` ` ` ``Straddling the line between the working class and the intellectual class are the "Sporedrakes," which are easily recognized by their prominent adornments made of molded chitin. These peridrakes spend almost all of their time inside the colony, but perform their work wherever there is flora, including the groves of ficus trees surrounding their colony's main entrance. Sporedrakes are analogous to plantation owners and minor nobility in humanoid societies, and are recruited from peridrake commoners who are commended for their leadership and dedication to the welfare of the colony. They are charged with overseeing the agricultural development of the colony and bolstering its huge subterranean ecosystem. ### Description `` ` ` ``The grand rulers of the peridrake colonies are known as "Broodlords," whose precious jewelry carries both arcane and religious motifs from the upper echelons. There are only ever two Broodlords at a time in each colony, and they seldom leave their chambers, which lie at the very heart of a peridrake colony. Broodlords are analogous to monarchs in humanoid societies, or queens in ant and bee colonies; if a new Broodlord is needed, a Souldrake is selected according to a ranked "Heirs List" accessible only to the current Broodlords. The secrecy of this List is viewed as vital to maintaining political stability, as any temptation to rebel against or kill a Broodlord is an unacceptable risk to the Colony's everliving emperors. They are responsible for dictating orders to the entire colony, heading the mystic orders to which the spellcasting peridrakes belong to, and controlling the population growth rate of the colony. In combat, they are larger and bulkier (especially in the lower body) than most peridrakes, increasing their survivability even as they annihilate enemies with arcane and divine spells; they function all at once as both 20th-level Wizards and 20th-level Clerics, of the Lore Master tradition and the Ur-Priest domain, respectively. # Elite Monster Spotlight: ## Irralkitril-Peridoc lil Beldroin of the Zeroth `` ` `` ``Some monsters in Dungeons and Dragons use elite stat arrays (+4, +4, +2, +2, +0, -2) to distinguish them from the baseline members of their race. It is also true for the peridrakes that many of their own kind have shown feats of heroism, from the scrappiest of wyrmlings to the grandest of Broodlords. The first documented Broodlord is one such example of these elite peridrakes, in addition to an example of what the stat changes would be like for a peridrake in the midst of a feeding frenzy. Often referred to simply as "Peridoc," the revered Irralkitril-Peridoc lil Beldroin of the Zeroth is the firstborn of all known peridrakes, said to be the progenitor of the entire species. It has engorged itself on the spoils of its prosperous colony for many centuries, and as a reflection of its huge size, it oversees the largest colony found among the worlds which peridrakes inhabit. With its longevity and power, it is renowned for the potency of its spells relative to other Broodlords, as well as its size-- which rivals that of the True Dragons. Peridoc's behavior is marked by its insatiable hunger for all things-- knowledge, fame, influence, treasure, and carnal pursuits. The only thing which keeps these cravings in check is the colony's ability to sate them-- a formidable task which sees the nebulous agents of the peridrakes questing all over the planes of existence to acquire them.
