\page # Vespanus' Entourage ### Vespanus of Roe Succeeder of Ambius the Usurper of 13 years, Protostrator of Abrizonde and the last Lord of the Cleft, Planar Architect of Many Realms; is a planeshifting merchant that Aeons ago left the Dying Earth with his preferred Artefacts and Grimoires and became a planes traveling merchant. You will often find him lightly smoking Flume in his merchants stall, or arguing with a small woman in an elaborately worked flask. **Plot Hook:** Vespanus might ask for you to seek out tomes or drugs for trade. ### Hegadil the madling As Vespanus will explain to anyone interested in knowing, he is primarily a Planar Architect, and that is his major business expertise. He wears a bezeled *Ring of Madling Summoning* on his thumb containing a Madling by the name of Hegadil, who is quite given to inappropriate satire, often appearing in a form that is mocking of someone present. Wherever their travels land them at night, Hegadil sets off hopping through the Chronosphere as Sandestins are wont to do, and quickly erects an Onyx Tower built of hundreds of their previous Onyx Towers. Hegadil is said to once have been an acquaintance of the Great and Obnoxious Bartimaeus. **Plot Hook:** Hegadil makes a report to Vespanus in your hearing that relates to a current goal or situation that is relevant to your players current interests. ### Amay He travels with Amay, a buxom woman with wiry brown hair and a piercing voice that was once a Protostrate of Abrizonde, and then wife to Ambius the Protostrator of Abrizonde by whom she was originally trapped in a Flask of Person. She will tell this story if Vespanus is distracted, but likely will leave out the inconvenient fact that this was caused by her own attempt to trap him instead, in a bid for power. **Plot Hook:** Amay might ask someone to break the Flask she is in to release her. ### Twk-Men Vespanus travels with a contingent of Twk-men that are not necessarily sworn to him, but work for him in exchange for travel with him. This way, they survive the death of the earth, and can seed their species across many realms. The Twk-Men are miniature greenskinned men who ride saddled dragonflies as mounts. They are useful sources of information, and are willing to sell their aerial knowledge. They can also be paid to dispense incorrect information and lie to others. The usual form of payment for them is salt, which they have a great, and mysterious need for. **Plot Hook:** The Twk-men make a report to Vespanus in your hearing that relates to a current goal or situation that is relevant to your players current interests. Or, your party asks if they can hire the Twk-mens service as spies while Vespanus is on your plane. ``` ``` > ##### Roleplaying Vespanus > The best possible advice for roleplaying Vespanus is picking up [*Songs of the Dying Earth*](https://www.amazon.com/Songs-Dying-Earth-George-Martin/dp/0765360616). > >Vespanus is an accomplished planes traveler and a very successful merchant, and like all Dying Earth Magicians he has a certain pomposity and smugness, though is more curious than condescending. > >He loves tips about tomes of knowledge, and the powers at hand on the plane where he has landed. Vespanus doesnt do much selling of things not of the Dead Earth, but anything that will increase his personal comforts, pleasures, or magical power, he will buy or trade for. His two biggest loves are Flume and women. Any pipe-herbs or other similar psychoactive consumables would potentially be of interest to him. > > ##### Roleplaying Hegadil >Unless you directly insult him, or Vespanus, Hegadil wont talk to anyone other than Vespanus. However he is quite passive aggressive and has a habit of materializing in mocking form or outfits, and is basically a subtle troll. > ##### Roleplayng Amay >Amay has very little development in [*Songs of the Dying Earth*](https://www.amazon.com/Songs-Dying-Earth-George-Martin/dp/0765360616). >She is bossy, and very angry about her capture in the Flask, and the resulting nulification of her access to magic within the Flask. This however was Millenia ago.. who is to say her current disposition? I imagine her to be ever scheming of escape and retribution, which is why Vespanus has yet to free her.. But you can play her however you prefer. > ##### Roleplayng Twk-men > The Twk-men are not very developed in the original [Dying Earth](https://www.amazon.com/Tales-Dying-Earth-Jack-Vance/dp/0312874561) nor in [*Songs of the Dying Earth*](https://www.amazon.com/Songs-Dying-Earth-George-Martin/dp/0765360616). > > Vespanus contingent of Twk-men offer an excellent chance for you to introduce an otherwise alien species in to your world. If your characters run in to them on a mission while theyre on your plane or in Vespanus' Merchant space, maybe you can strike a deal to house and work with some of them, they are always curious about seeding a settling of themselves on planes they like. > >**Galivespians** >Although I have found no linking articles, it is obvious to me that the Galivespians of Phillip Pullman's [*His Dark Materials*](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/His_Dark_Materials) are close relatives, and likely inspired by Vance's Twk-men. The Galivespians also have tiny things called *lodestone resonators* that are essentially a tiny form of Sivis speaking stones, making them even better spies.

## The Planar Architecture of Vespanus and Hegadil

“I create buildings of a fantastic nature — following the wishes of my client, I first generate a phantasm, a perfect visualization of the completed building. After which I employ one of the minor sandestins, of the type called ‘madlings,’ who builds the structure in a matter of hours, flying in the materials from anywhere in the chronosphere wherein they may be found. Hegadil is a sandestin, and therefore can travel the chronosphere at will, going not only anywhere, but anywhen at will. He can collect building materials from any of these wheres and whens. Vespanus can offer rooms, amenities, and structure styles otherwise not available in your world.

### Structures

*** Great Wall of Donatrum *** - This structure is a wall that comes with 4 towers, one at each corner of the property it surrounds. Covers 8,000 sq. ft. A great way to solidify an adverse possession claim on your favorite piece of the realm. Built of an adamantine frame with solid walls of fused skleptor horn, which deflect magics below 8th level. The gatehouse comes equipped with a long crossbow that indefinitely manifest bolts for itself in the attached ground quiver, and has *burst fire* & *reload*. Each tower comes equipped with one of these crossbows, but do not have the capability of burst fire, and do not need rely on *reload*.

*** Onyx Tower *** - This is a stand alone four sided tower, five stories high, but only containing an entrance floor followed by three stories of spiraling staircase to the top floor. in the center of this stair case is a monstrous astral diamond. At the top is a ritual circle the size of the entire floor, compartmentalized by a central circle for the Prime, and a quarter each for Fire, Air, Water, and Earth. In the center is the top of the astral diamond and at each quarter are impressive elemental shards of the respective type. Attunement to elemental items is instant here, and elemental damage done by elementals or elemental weapons / spell effects are healed here in the period of a short rest. Attempts at binding elementals here are rolled with advantage.

*** Crystal Greenhouse *** - A large glass greenhouse framed of pest warded woods carved with the likenesses of plant spirits and covered with an augmented glass made with with solar shards, which is pieced together in stained glass style sectioning the shapes of solar glyphs. It causes gorgeous prismatic reflections and glares, providing a beautification of your grounds, and a growing space for your produce and herbs. The fused solar glass magnifies the magical element within the solar rays, helping you increase your output by 25%. A crystal greenhouse can be either a Posioners Grotto x25% or a Garden x25%.

*** Extradimensional MageCells *** - This is a small building that appears to be an outhouse or even just a door way, of immaculately fitted grey marble, passing through this doorway one finds themselves facing a small circular room with a small ritual circle. A captured caster that cannot be simply held in a standard dungeon or cell, will be held here. Speaking the command word the ritual circle casts the *Spell of Forlorn Encystment*. The prisoner is pulled down into the ground and is held magically within a small spherical chamber beneath the ground, which is shifted into an extradimensional space. They can be releassed via the command word reversed. ``` ``` *** Extradimensional Retreat *** - This is an encased extradimensional bungalow for your personal retirement. Better even than a hidden room, this extradimensional retreat is a custom liesure zone that collapses on any intruders, instantly killing them. The downside is that you cannot enter it in an emergency. To enter you must have the corresponding talismanic key, which is created with the space. A ten minute attunement with the key allows you to stick it through the fabric of space-time and open the door in to your retreat. Time moves at 1/2 speed here, meaning attunements and the study of tomes of lore can be accomplished here in half the corresponding time outside the retreat. Only 5th-level casters or higher can operate the key to this retreat.

*** Grand Dome of Presectus *** - This dome is sectioned by Elements like the Onyx Tower. It has a large central domed structure made of the same solar shard glass as the crystal greenhouse and produces similar prismatic effects. This dome has not only solar glyphs but also glyphs of prime. It covers 3 gardens, and anything grown within these gardens produces potions that are double strength. There are then four orbital domed structures that each correspond to an element, its glass made with shards of the element, and bearing the glyphs of the element. Each covers 1 garden. Any potion made from the plants grown under the elemental domes, adds the elemental properties to it as per alchemy.

#### Privy ***Prerequisite:*** Sewers *A lavishly decorated and perfumed privy connected to your sewers, keeping your stronghold smelling good, and keeping your residents in the height of comfort.* You may have a full privy network of any size installed on your grounds, provided you have sewers to accomodate them, at a maximum construction cost of x5 the basic privy cost. ** Benefit: ** This is a private bathroom system that gives you addvantage on saving throws against sickness, and allows you to reduce your unskilled workers by 2. If you have Clockwork Plumbing, you need no extra workers. ** Can Be Built As: ** Bathroom, Lavatory.

#### Star Dome ***Prerequisite:*** Any otherwise unoccupied tower. *A gorgeously domed observatory, each section of the glass magically moving, but always representing an exact replication of the stars and celestial bodies, from the perspective of your location. Domed with glass made with planetary and elemental shards, mixed to match the proper magical essence to each celestial body.* You do not require skilled workers to maintain this room, but without someone skilled in astrological matters, the room is merely a beautiful addition. ** Benefit: ** This observatory *always* shows an exact atrological chart in its glass, and gives any checks involving astrological divination advantage. ** Can Be Built As: ** Observatory, Astrologers Tower.

#### Elemental Ice Larder ***Prerequisite:*** None. *A storage room, frosty with ice, but nicely cozied within an extradimensional space in your kitchens and housing a bound ice elemental contracted to keep your food at its optimum preserving temperature, despite atmospheric concerns outside the room.* This room can be up to 100 sq ft. and requires the attention of someone capable of working with elementals, atleast once per 28 day. ** Benefit: ** Reduces the amount of food need and therefore the cost of feeding yourself, and the members of your stronghold. ** Can Be Built As: ** Morgue Coldroom, Ice Magic Chamber.

#### Summoners Sanctum ***Prerequisite:*** Ritual Circle *This lavishly bricked ritual room is magical to the core of every substance used to craft it, every brick inlaid with the raw power waiting for direction from a summoners will.* You will set the summoning magic for this room the first time you cast a ritual in it. Casting *Summoners Circle* will turn the room into a cube shaped summoners 'circle'. Casting *Manifestation Circle* will turn the room in to a container in to which you can summon entities. Travel through the portal is possible only by moving through it from the chosen plane to yours. Anything that does so is instantly transported to the other plane, appearing in the space you have linked it to. Deities and other planar rulers can prevent portals created by this spell from opening in their presence without the use of their True Name. ``` ``` #### Summons to the Spirit *5th-level conjuration* ___ - **Casting Time:** 5 minutes - **Range:** 20 feet - **Components:** V, S - **Duration:** instantaneous When you cast this spell, speak the name of an entity. There's a 20% chance the spirit is occupied under another magicians binding, or finds a flaw in your summons; speaking the Secret Name you have a 10% chance the spirit is otherwise bound; and speaking the True Name of a specific creature the effect is automatic. If that creature is on a plane other than the one you are on, the entrance of the *Opening of the Ways* vortex locks on to this creature and draws them through it to the nearest unoccupied space to your material base of manifestation on your side of the Vortex. You gain no special power over the creature by use of this spell, only by preset factors such as a *Manifestation Circle*, or by use of the entitys Secret or True Name. it is free to act as the DM deems appropriate. It might leave, attack you, or help you, or you can try to force a negotiation by the casting of *Shrues Planar Ally*. If you know the creatures True Name you can simply lay *Shrues Geas of Allegiance and Obediance* #### Shrues Planar Ally *5th-level enchantment* ___ - **Casting Time:** 5 minutes - **Range:** 20 feet - **Components:** V, S - **Duration:** instantaneous You attempt to charm an entity to negotiate a contract or pact with you. If you have it contained within a *manifestation circle*, you have advantage. If successful the trapped creature is willing to enter in to a reasonable negotiation.

##### Negotiations and Social Combat I use [Social Combat](https://www.dmsguild.com/product/266957/Social-Combat) by [Caleb Wichman](https://www.dmsguild.com/browse.php?author=Caleb%20Wichman). This document offers a full mechanic for debate and argument that doesn't simply reduce it to one or two persuasion checks, which I find a bit flimsy. Like with the haggling variant offered in *Social Combat* You merely set the gradient according to desired benefits of either negotiating party.

#### Shrues Geas of Allegiance and Obedience *4th-level conjuration* ___ - **Casting Time:** 1 action - **Range:** 20 feet - **Components:** S, V - **Duration:** Until dispelled or caster dies. If you have and use the True Name of any entity, this spell is automatic and provides them NO recourse. If their Secret Name is used they have one no modifier saving throw (DC 15). If successful this creature is ENTIRELY under your control. It obeys your commands to the letter, but may still be passively hostile towards you, willing to take advantage of any chink in the armor of the geas, or any loopholes it may discover. Choose your words carefully.

##### In case of failure in the above endeavours Should you come against a failure in your charm, negotiations, or in some other way, if you act quickly, you may cast *Wrack of the recalcitrant spirit* before the manifestation circle dissipates. #### Wrack of the Recalcitrant Spirit *7th-level abjuraion* ___ - **Casting Time:** 30 minutes - **Range:** 20 feet - **Components:** S, M (entity specific scroll) - **Duration:** Until dispelled or 1 year Reading the scroll you cause *Spell of Forlorn Encystment* to trap the creature within the *Manifestation Circle* as per its usual result, but in this case it tortures the entity, reducing is probability of negotiating, as shown in the table:

When recalling a spirit you cannot simply reverse the *Wrack of Recalcitrant Spirit* or you are freeing it to attack you, instead, the summoning procedure must be repeated, up to *opening of the ways*.. at which point you would reverse the *wrack'* and release the spirit in to the *Manifestation Circle*. Then you can try again to charm, negotiate and bind the spirit. If you fail, and resort again to the *Wrack of Recalcitrant Spirit* the spirits starting % of Resistance is whatever % you released it at, but now it loses 10% per month.

##### When you finally have a Bound Servant Servants operate on Loyalty Points but since they cannot leave, their loyalty points on the entire scale dictate more how they interact and how adamant they are to finding loopholes and working against you. Entities that enter in to a fairly negotiated pact start at 8 loyalty points. Entities that are tortured or threatened in to compliance start at -5. ``` ``` ##### Maintenance of the Material Base The astral diamond, elemental shard, or what have you that has been used as the artefact the spirit is bound in to requires maintenance, *unless* you have the creatures true name. Having only the Secret Name or pseduonym/title requires you to cast the *Greater Warding of Greater Holding of the Greater Aldefessor the Archmage of Greater Thrallex* once per 28 day cycle.

#### The Charm of the Inveigling Tongue *3rd-level enchantment* ___ - **Casting Time:** 1 action - **Range:** 30 feet - **Components:** S, V - **Duration:** Instantaneous Attempt to persuade one bound creature with any one "reasonable" and very sugar coated suggestion. Cast using a scroll of 5th level slot or higher, you gain advantage. #### Induction of Pain by Elemental Inversion *4th-level transmutation* ___ - **Casting Time:** 1 action - **Range:** 10 feet - **Components:** V, S - **Duration:** concentration You cause the space occupied by your trapped spirit to trasnmute into the exact opposite of the spirits nature, causing it great pain. The spirit immediately gains a temporary +5 to its Loyalty Score lasting a period of 1 hour, but its actual Loyalty Score decreases by one. Cast using a scroll of 5th level slot or higher, the pain increases, and the temporary Loyalty Points increase to +10 and the creatures regular Loyalty Points decreaes by two. #### The Dweomer of Ignominious Dismissal *3rd-level enchantment* ___ - **Casting Time:** 1 action - **Range:** Touch - **Components:** V, S - **Duration:** Instantaneous Try to force extraplanar being to return to plane of origin, and unbounded from any haunting, anchoring, or material base it is currently subjct to. Secret name and title must be given, or the spirit has a 30% chance of being dismissed only from its material base, and remaining on the plane. If its loyalty score was under 10 it immediately attacks you. If it has a 11-15 loyalty score it has a 15% chance of attacking you. At 16-20 you are safe from any retributive attacks by whatever you have dismissed. If the dismissed entity attacks, it has a +2 to both dexterity and charisma, since it is so intimately familiar with your patterns. With a creatures True Name, it automatically disappears to it plane.

** Roleplaying Onjarha **- Onjarha is slightly more realistic than Ellacryn about her place in grander schemes. She knows her power and wields it with calm confidence. She has nothing to prove, but also doesnt suffer from delusions of grandeur like some human cultists like Ellacryn. Onjarha has goals of becoming a demon in death, and works tirelessly towards the perfection of this. She carries with her two Flasks of Person, and 4 Potions of Suggestion. She is a talented leader of her subordinates in both extensive plots and intense battle.

** Roleplaying Bastrandt ** Bastrandt is a personal favorite of Fierna and if that wasn't enough to inflate his ego, his sword mastery does the trick. He is very condescending, and casts vicious mockery as a bonus action almost every turn when wielding his sword. He is talented as coordinating his own underlings but has been known to find his failures in his overconfidence and off the cuff elitism.

** Roleplaying Nat'hura **-Nat'hura is an incubus that was a major player in a cult center of Fiernas on another plane, and now in death is one of her favored operatives and companions. He is is not particularly intelligent or conversational. Nat'hura is a great example of the truth that charm and the ability to deceive does not always rely on intelligence and eloquence. Martin, Elizabeth Hand, & Neil Gaiman. The one that stood out to me the most was *Abrizonde*, by Walter Jon Williams where we find Vespanus arriving at the Cleft of Abrizonde. The Nymphic Icons and the Flask of Person both derive from the story, as well as Amay, already in the Flask.
