\n\n# Winter Wonder Items - Day 1\n___\nHey hey hey, everybody! Welcome to [#WinterWonderItems](https://twitter.com/hashtag/WinterWonderItems?src=hash). Every day for the entirety of December, I will be drafting up a Dungeons and Dragons 5th Edition magic item - not only a means of redemption from my ultimate failure at Inktober 2017, but also as a means to test my Design skills and hopefully contribute a cool bundle of content that Dungeon Masters can incorporate into their game!\n\nYou can follow me [@zachjamesgames](https://twitter.com/zachjamesgames) on Twitter for the daily updates. There will be occasional polls on what I might craft up next there! I hope this brings some cool ideas to your table, and if you like them or have constructive feedback/criticism please let me know!\n\n(As a quick shout out these templates were made using the [Homebrewery](http://homebrewery.naturalcrit.com/) by [Scott Tolksdorf](https://www.patreon.com/stolksdorf). It's excellent, and you should check it out!)\n\n### The Giving Ring:\n*Ring, legendary, (requires attunement by a cleric or druid of good alignment)*\n\n___\nThe Giving Ring is a very rare ring made from the ivory wood of the Arbur'sancta of the Ventsweald. It is thin, but incredibly strong, and twists in a tightly wound spiral around the finger with a large tear-shaped emerald gemstone atop it's band. The gem glows with a soft yellow-green light. The gemstone inlaid in this ring is actually a seed of the Arbur'sancta which has properties similar to the Resurrection spell. \n\nIf a creature is attuned to this ring they may choose to remove the seed inlaid in the ring and plant it in fresh soil to grow a Giving Tree. This Giving Tree takes 1d6 days to grow, and when it has fully grown it will bear a single fruit. This fruit has the exact qualities of the Resurrection spell (found on pg. 272 of the Player's Handbook) but the creature does not suffer any of the side effects of the spell (so no -4 penalty to attack rolls, saving throws, or ability checks). A dead creature can be made to eat the fruit to enjoy its benefits.\n\nThe Giving Tree immediately retracts into the ground after the fruit has been picked from its branches and no means of magic (or otherwise) can bring it back. The fruit picked from the Giving Tree will rot and be of no use after one week. \n\nThe seed will slowly grow back on this ring, but it will take one whole year from the exact moment it was removed to grow back. The seed is unique in that it does not grow from the sunlight or rain, but instead from the Light and Love and Spirit of the creature attuned to it. If the creature who wore the ring removes it or becomes unattuned to the ring at any moment, the seed withers from the lack of nutrients and suffers 1d10 days of extra recovery time (maximum of 365 days) per 24 hours it is not worn by the creature attuned to it.\n\n**Attunement.** This ring can only be attuned by a cleric or druid of a good alignment. To attune to this ring the cleric or druid must present themselves to a great protector of The Wilds. A spiritual guardian of the forest, a master druid, or an ancient awakened tree or treant are all examples of such a being. If deemed worthy of possessing the ring, the cleric or druid may become attuned immediately.\n\n```\n```\n#### What Makes this Ring Special?\n\nThe Giving Ring is an effective and very viable item for a low-level party to have a potential backup plan for death, or is a unique way to give players a chance of (somewhat) simple and cheap Resurrection in settings where Resurrection magic is extremely rare and unable to be easily obtained (like my setting). It can be used to help compliment Resurrection magic that is a bit more challenging than RAW Resurrection.\n\nPlayers will likely find themselves hard pressed to use the ring at times due to the amount of time they will need to wait for the tree to grow, and the resources that will be needed to keep the body preserved until they can pick its fruit. The idea is to give the party an option to save a friend/loved one, but with a little bit of a challenge. Not a freebie, but not a complete derailing of the campaign to find a powerful person to cast their expensive magic on their dead friend.\n\nWith the seed requiring one year to grow back, and with the fruit spoiling after one week, this prevents players from abusing the ring's power while also giving a very earthy and realistic feel to the ring despite its great magic.\n\n#### Inserting the Giving Ring into your Campaign...\n\nWhat is the Arbur'sancta? This is a very butchered/artistic freedom approach to the Latin words \"arbor\" and \"sancta\" meaning \"holy tree.\" Is the Arbur'sancta a one of a kind tree, or is it perhaps found in several hidden groves protected by powerful Archdruids and Fey of the deep woods?\n\nWho can make a ring from the tree's wood? Anyone? Only a skilled Gnome or Elf? Perhaps you must commune with the Arbur'sancta and request of it a ring, but in favor it requests something of you!\n\nWhat is the Ventsweald? Vent coming from the Latin \"ventus\" meaning \"wind.\" Perhaps the wind in this forest carries with it a magical hymn sung by ancient elf lords who once protected this forest, and only the enchanted lyrics of this droning song can wake the slumbering Arbur'sanctus from its deep sleep.\n\nIs there only one Giving Ring in your world or several? If several, who has them and why? Maybe the Arbur'sanctus is a Treant and only the Treant can craft the ring from itself. \n\n### Thanks a Bunch! \nThink about some cool lore for this ring and tie it into your world! Giving a little thought behind the creation of your magic item gives it life and purpose and your players will feel even more excited to receive it and really remember it as a special moment in their history of D&D!\n___\n\nTell me your thoughts on this Winter Wonder Item, and please share with your friends and fellow adventurers! \n\n-Zach\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n","pageCount":1,"thumbnail":"","invitedAuthors":[],"lang":"en","theme":"5ePHB","gDrive":false,"trashed":false},"enable_v3":"true","enable_themes":true,"config":{"local":false,"publicUrl":"https://homebrewery.naturalcrit.com","baseUrl":"https://homebrewery.naturalcrit.com","environment":"production","deployment":""},"ogMeta":{"site_name":"The Homebrewery - Make your Homebrew content look legit!","title":"Winter Wonder Items - 2017 - Day 01 - HallowLegsTaylor","description":"The Giving Ring","image":"https://homebrewery.naturalcrit.com/thumbnail.png","type":"article"}})
