# Eyemonk MY HOME? MY HOME IS FAR AWAY *and long gone, commander Karst," Chau said with a hint of sadness. It was the first time Ethan had been able to read the strange creature's emotions somewhat clearly. Even the strangest looking people he had encountered had had faces that could be read. Chau only had one huge eye. Ethan had learned to pay attention to the minute twitchings in the muscles of his iris.* *"What happened?" he asked.* *"It does not matter." Chau answered, returning to his usual stoïcism. "It is in the past, and one should not dwell on the past. It is much more important that one should try to make a difference in the present."*
The Eyemonks, called Oculytes in their own language, hail from the grand city of Ymaché, once located in another reality. Here, they were the guardians of a mystical wellspring. They were scattered across the multiverse after their city was destroyed and their homeworld was devastated by the wrath of the Faethar people. No Eyemonk alive knows exactly how long ago this happened, but most agree it has been many thousands of years. In present day, both Ymaché and the Faethar are long forgotten by anyone but the Eyemonks. Having lost their home, the remaining ones now wander the worlds, looking for a new purpose. They get the name "Eyemonk" for the giant eye they have where one would expect a head, as well as their traditional garb, which many think looks like monk robes. Not nearly all live monastic lives. ### Small Planetouched While they are humanoid in body shape, Eyemonks are aberrations, and have the strange appearance and physiology to match. They are short and stout, standing between 3 and 4 feet tall and weighing around 50 pounds. They have a purple skin that is coated in a thin layer of slightly acidic protective mucus. They lack bodily orifices and have no lungs, nor a digestive system. Instead, they breathe through their skin and absorb liquids and nutrients through the palms of their three-fingered hands. Their eponymous giant eyeball, that sits where one would expect a head on a humanoid creature, is a little under a foot in diameter. Their brain is located where one would expect lungs to be. An Eyemonk's eye colour can range from colours common among humans to colours that are dazzlingly exotic. The colours and pattern present in the iris are unique for every Eyemonk, and they recognize each other this way. ### Silent Monks Eyemonks have no spoken language, as they lack a mouth or vocal cords. Their main method of :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: communication is telepathy. They do have a unique script, which consists of circular characters representing one word each, connected by branching lines. Eyemonk texts can often be read in many different ways depending on which branches are followed and often have hidden messages that are only visible to well-trained eyes. Eyemonks demonstrate the strange ability to cast spells that require a verbal component despite being physically incapable of speech. They claim to do this by "thinking out loud". Because they can cast spells with a verbal component without making sound, they can also cast these spells in an area of silence, such as one created by the *silence* spell, without a problem. ### Nectar of Immortality Eyemonks are considered adults from the age of 15 and have a natural lifespan of around 60 years. However, every Eyemonk carries a small plant with them with which they share a symbiotic relationship. This plant grows from a seed that is planted in the womb together with the Eyemonk embryo and is essential to its survival. After they are born, they carry it with them in a jar. The plant lives off the mucus on the Eyemonk's skin and if the Eyemonk can raise it to maturity, it provides them with a special nectar that they can consume to halt their aging process indefinitely, making their lifespan potentially infinite. Not many traditionally chose to walk this path, but this has changed after the fall of Ymaché. \page {{note ##### ...or deadly poison? The nectar of the Eyemonks' symbiotic plant only has its beneficial effect when consumed by an Eyemonk. Any creature other than an Eyemonk that consumes a dose of the nectar must make a DC15 Constitution saving throw, taking 9 (2d8) poison damage on a failed save, or half as much on a successful one. Eyemonks are aware of the harmful effects of the nectar on other creatures. The plant makes one dose of nectar every 30 days. }} : ### Homeless and Childless Eyemonks are biological hermaphrodites, only temporarily developing sexual characteristics in order to carry a child when they choose to mate. Beyond determining who is capable of carrying a child (an Eyemonk might call this parent the "mother" and the other the "father" for convenience's sake when conversing with other species), biological sex had no meaning in their society. Eyemonks have no concept of gender identity or gender roles, and partnered Eyemonks can alternate between them who carries their child. Eyemonks are expected to partner for life, and a relationship in which both partners have been a "father" and a "mother" at least once is considered a gold standard in their society. When they were still living on their homeworld, Eyemonks had a very low fertility rate, dropping even more in Eyemonks that had outlived their natural lifespan. A couple rarely has more than a few offspring, despite their potentially lengthy lives. Furthermore, the seed of the symbiotic plant that the Eyemonk embryo needs in order to survive was only found on their homeworld. Because of this, no Eyemonk will ever be able to reproduce again after the fall of Ymaché. ### Worldwanderers Eyemonk society collapsed after the fall of Ymaché. The Eyemonks that survived fled their homeworld in small, sturdy ships carrying 4 or 5 individuals at a time in stasis. These ships drift across the multiverse until they crash into another world. After emerging from their stasis, Eyemonks wander the world they've fallen into in search for a new purpose. If more than one Eyemonk survives the crash, they usually stick together in their travels. Since after the fall of Ymaché there will never be more Eyemonks, most see it as their duty to keep on living to keep the Eyemonks from going extinct. Accepting that they are in it for the long run, they seek out fruitful and fulfilling ways to spend their potentially eternal lives. Some come to love the new worlds they find themselves in so much that they'll take up arms to defend them. Because of their strange appearance, Eyemonks greatly unnerve many who encounter their kind for the first time. As a result, for many Eyemonks who take up residence in other communities, being accepted is a lengthy and arduous task. : For some reason, Eyemonks consider showing one's bare feet vulgar, and they take great care to cover their own feet at all times. As a result, it is unknown what Eyemonk feet look like. :: {{note ##### adrift on the sea of time Just because Ymaché fell many thousands of years ago, that does not mean every Eyemonk is many thousands of years old. Eyemonks of all ages were present at the fall of their city, and their ships take varying lengths of time to travel across the multiverse into another world. While in their ships on the astral plane, they are in a state of hibernation, and do not age physically or mentally. To an Eyemonk just emerging from their ship, it feels like Ymaché fell only yesterday. When creating your Eyemonk character, consider how old you were when Ymaché fell, how long you have lived since then, and what kind of memories you have of the city. I'm an expert! | }} : ### Eyemonk Names Eyemonks have a single name that was given to them at birth. This name is usually short, at most two syllables long. After bonding with a mate, they add the genitive of their mate's name, formed by adding the suffix "za" or "cha", after their own. All Eyemonk names are gender neutral. Despite not having a spoken language, Eyemonks are strangely adamant about the correct pronunciation of their names, which is not always obvious from the way they are written, and get annoyed very quickly at repeated mispronunciations.

Your Dexterity score increases by 1. ***Age.*** Eyemonks mature at the age of 15. When left to their own devices, they can live to be 60 years old. However, if they consume a dose the nectar of their symbiotic plant at least once every 30 days, they can potentially live forever. ***Alignment.*** Eyemonks usually tend towards lawful and neutral alignments. ***Size.*** Eyemonks stand between 3 and 4 feet tall. Your size is small. ***Speed.*** Your base walking speed is 25 feet. ***Aberration.*** Your creature type is aberration, rather than humanoid. ***Acid Resistance.*** The acidic mucus on your skin grants you resistance to acid damage. ***Eldritch Darkvision.*** As a result of your extraplanar origin, you have superior vision in dark and dim conditions. You can see in dim light within 120 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. Your aberrant eye can discern colour even in complete darkness. ***Extraplanar Eye.*** You know the *true strike* cantrip. Once you reach 3rd level, you can cast *see invisibility* once per long rest without material components. ***Sunlight Sensitivity.*** You have disadvantage on attack rolls and on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on sight when you, the target of your attack, or whatever you are trying to perceive is in direct sunlight. ***Telepathy.*** Your lack of a mouth or vocal cords renders you physically incapable of speech. Instead, telepathy is your main method of communication. You can communicate telepathically with any creature you can see within 120 feet of you. You need to share a language with the creature in order for it to understand your telepathic utterances. ***Thinking Out Loud.*** You possess a strange ability to cast spells that require a verbal component without having to speak. Areas of silence, such as one created by the *silence* spell, do not hinder your spellcasting. ***Languages.*** You are unable to speak, but you can understand, read and write Common and Eyemonk. Eyemonks claim the spoken version of their language consists of many buzzing and guttural sounds. ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: ## Racial Feats Some DMs allow the use of feats to customize a character. Feats are an optional rule detailed in chapter 6 of the *Player's Handbook*. It is up to your DM wether or not feats are used in your campaign and if so, which feats are available. Chapter 1 of *Xanathar's Guide To Everything* details a series of additional feats allowing you to specifically explore your character's race further and bring you closer to a certain aspect of your race's lineage. This section introduces two such feats specifically for Eyemonks. What caused a feat to emerge is up to you and the DM. Maybe it was the result of arduous training, maybe it manifested itself with age, or maybe a dramatic event caused your dormant abilities to awaken. Figuring out what brought about your change adds to the story of your character, as well as the lore of your campaign.

You have learned to weaponize the acidic mucus on your skin. You gain the following benefits: - Whenever you make an unarmed strike, you deal an additional 1d4 acid damage on top of your normal damage. - Whenever you successfully grapple a creature, you can choose to have it take 1d8 acid damage. On subsequent turns, if you still have the creature grappled, you can use your bonus action to cause this damage again. The damage increases by 1d8 when you reach 5th level (2d8), 11th level (3d8) and 17th level (4d8) ### Eye of the Beholder *Prerequisite: Eyemonk*
You have awakened within yourself the powers of your race's distant cousins, the Beholder-kin. You gain the following effects: - You lose the spellcasting abilities granted to you by *Extraplanar Eye*. - You learn Deep Speech if you don't already know it. - You gain the ability to, as an action, shoot up to three magical rays at random (roll a d4, reroll duplicates) from your eye, choosing a target you can see within 90 feet of you for each. Your spell save DC for these eye rays is 8 + your wisdom modifier + your proficiency bonus. You can shoot a number of rays equal to your Wisdom modifier. You regain expended rays when you finish a long rest. When you take this feature, you may choose four eye rays from the following list, only one of which can deal damage. When you gain a level, you can choose one eye ray you have and replace it with another from this list. You may gain other eye rays or a larger number of eye rays at your DM's discretion. * *Antimagic Ray*. The target must succeed on a Dexterity saving throw or have one of its magic items lose all magical properties until the start of your next turn. If the object is a charged item, it also loses ld4 charges. Determine the affected item randomly, ignoring single-use items such as potions and scrolls. * *Blinding Ray*. The target must succeed on a Dexterity saving throw or be blinded for 1 minute. The target can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on a success. * *Confusion Ray*. The target must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw or it can't take reactions until the end of its next turn. \page # Eyemonk NPCs Many thousands of years ago, the Eyemonks, called Oculytes in their own language, were scattered across the multiverse. Forced into a diaspora by the devastation of their homeworld at the hands of the Faethar people, the few that remain can be found in many different worlds. Some may believe themselves to be the last of their kind, some continue to travel the multiverse in search of others, and some come to love the new worlds they find themselves in so much that they'll take up arms to defend them. ***Eyemonk martial arts.*** Most Eyemonks have some degree of martial arts training. In the city of Ymaché, once their home, most would attend daily communal martial arts excercises, though it was not expected that they would have to put this training to use. These communal training sessions were considered a kind of religious service in Eyemonk culture, and the honing of one's body and mind was thought to be for spiritual benefit. :: {{note ##### Eyemonk city defence. In the event that the city of Ymaché was attacked, the Eyemonks would rely heavily upon their more powerful assets, such as their more powerful warriors and the mechanical Eye Titans, but common Eyemonk foot soldiers would assist as well. Such soldiers would typically work in pairs of two, with a pair being equipped with a large tower shield, shortswords and energy blasters. Ranks of soldiers would set down their shields side by side to form a shield wall. The **tower shield** used by Eyemonk footsoldiers was too large to be worn or carried, weighing about 22 lbs. Instead of being part of their equipment, it was to be planted and held stationary by one soldier, while another used it for cover. An Eyemonk tower shield was large enough to provide *three-quarters cover* to two Eyemonk soldiers. Eyemonk **energy blasters** were relatively large weapons that encased an Eyemonk's entire forearm. Though somewhat clunky, they were light, only about 2 lbs. \page ### Eyemonk Monad Monads were the elite warriors of Eyemonk society. They were the guardians of the temple-citadel of Ymaché, and their position was considered one of great honor. To become a Monad, an Eyemonk would have to endure years of rigorous training, honing their mind and body to perfection. Monads were respected not just for their battle prowess, but also for their wisdom. The way of the sword, to them, is not just about *how* to draw your blade, but also *when*, and especially *when not*. Despite their status as elite martial artists, Eyemonk Monads were primarily considered sages and guardians of peace, and were spiritual guides to the Eyemonks. ***Honed to Perfection.*** Monads are named for the Monado, the signature weapon of their order. Each Monado was forged by the Monad that wields it, and is made to be an extension of themselves. As part of their training, a Monad will set out on a quest to find the perfect materials for their blade, and meditate on the ideal shape. The blades of Monads from ages past are considered sacred relics to the Eyemonks, and a large number of these Monado were kept in the vaults of the temple-citadel of Ymaché. For another than the Monad who forged it to wield a Monado is incredibly rare, and would be considered sacrilegious by most Eyemonks. ***Protectors of Ymaché.*** When the Faethar attacked Ymaché, the Monad order stepped up to defend their fellow Eyemonks. Those who were in the city for this final, desperate battle tell of the legendary feats of the Monads. Though many gave their lives and Ymaché was still lost, without the Monads, far fewer Eyemonks would have been able to escape. :: {{note ##### Monad weapon types Though a Monad's blade is typically a longsword, there have been Eyemonks throughout history who have fashioned their Monado differently. The Monado of Lazin, apprentice to Chuzo Mayiza, took the shape of twin shortswords. The legendary Monad Piplup wielded a glaive, and the eccentric Lalo fashioned himself a chakram. Any bladed weapon is eligible. }} ### Eyemonk Wyrdrazor The rarest class of Eyemonk warrior, Wyrdrazors were Eyemonks who awakened within themselves the ability to see the future. Some of the greatest heroes from Eyemonk legend were Wyrdrazors, who used their strange power to protect their people and avert premonitions of doom. There are never more than a few Wyrdrazors at the same time. Notably, at the time Ymaché fell, there hadn't been any Wyrdrazors for several generations. ***Go Through Me.*** Where the martial arts practiced by the Monad order revolved around being evasive and hard to pin down, most Wyrdrazors choose a fighting style centered around protection. They supplement their prescient abilities with a fighting style that allows them to redirect attacks. Clad in heavy armour and wielding a shield, Wyrdrazors deliberately make themselves a target to shield others. ### Eyemonk Xohar

If the target is a creature, the Eyemonk can choose one of the following additional effects: * The target must succeed on a DC 15 Dexterity saving throw or be knocked prone. * The target must succeed on a DC 15 Strength saving throw or be pushed 15 feet away from the Eyemonk * The target must succeed on a DC 15 Constitution saving throw or be stunned until the end of the Eyemonk's next turn. : ***Eye Rays (recharge 5/6).*** The Eyemonk shoots three of the following magical eye rays at random (reroll duplicates), choosing one or two targets it can see within 120 feet of it. 1. *Antimagic Ray.* The target must succeed on a DC 15 Dexterity saving throw or have one of its magic items lose all magical properties until the start of your next turn. If the object is a charged item, it also loses ld4 charges. Determine the affected item randomly, ignoring single-use items such as potions and scrolls. 2. *Blinding Ray.* The target must succeed on a DC 15 Dexterity saving throw or be blinded for 1 minute. The target can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on a success. 3. *Confusion Ray.* The target must succeed on a DC 15 Wisdom saving throw or it can't take reactions until the end of its next turn. On its turn, the target can't move and uses its action to make a melee or ranged attack against a randomly determined creature within range. If the target can't attack, it does nothing on its turn. 4. *Enervation Ray.* The target must make a DC 15 Constitution saving throw, taking 18 (4d8) necrotic damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one. ### Reactions ***Deflect Missile.*** In response to being hit by a ranged weapon attack, the Eyemonk deflects the missile. The damage it takes from the attack is reduced by 1d10 + 4. If the damage is reduced to 0, the Eyemonk catches the missile if it's small enough to hold in one hand and the Eyemonk has a hand free. : ***Parry.*** The Eyemonk adds 4 to its AC against one melee attack that would hit it. \page ### Eye Titan Eye Titans are relics of the once great city of Ymaché. They were created by the Eyemonks to serve as workers and guardians. The few who survived the destruction of Ymaché have now fallen into other worlds, where they search for their masters or try to still do their jobs. **Loyal to a Fault.** Eye Titans were made to serve the Eyemonks. Even after the destruction of Ymaché, this is their solitary focus. However, if the final battle for the city has not wrecked them, time has. Most are broken beyond repair and won't function properly anymore. Some Eye Titans still try to defend their posts. These posts are usually nowhere in sight, but they are too broken to realize that. So they stand around in the wilderness, attacking anything they deem hostile. Others still try to do their jobs, moving random objects from one place to another forever, or building pointless structures out of whatever materials they can find, standing around until they crumble, then starting over again, all the while attacking anything that interferes. Most Eye Titans, however, merely wander around without regard for most obstacles and only fighting in self-defence, forever searching for masters they are too broken to recognize. ***Eye on the Ball.*** Many who have faced an Eye Titan in combat have been caught off guard when the massive construct detached its eye and lobbed it at a target. Eye Titans frequently make use of this ability, both to use their eye as an offensive weapon, and to simply place it on a more advantageous position on the battlefield. An Eye Titan's vision always remains centered on its eye, as do its eye rays, meaning that it can force its opponts to focus on two targets rather than one. This strategy is risky, however. If an Eye Titan's eye is destroyed, the construct will be permanently blinded and lose access to its eye rays, severely weakening it. An Eye Titan without its eye has a challenge rating of 4 (1.100 XP) ***Construct Nature.*** An Eye Titan doesn't require air, food, drink or sleep. :: {{note ##### Variant: Telepathic Interface Each Eye Titan has what is known as a Telepathic Interface Pad. Most telepathic interface pads have been lost over the ages, and the corresponding Eye Titans cannot receive commands anymore.
