#### A Note on using this Book: Most Races in this book are typically evil within Forgotten Realms, and would get more than a second look if crossing into a human, elf, dwarvish or gnome civilization. They're meant to be played in a setting that is more inclusive. Maybe you're an orc in an orc village, or live in a less segregated society. Pick a race, and a subrace if it has one, gain the benefits of both, and get ready for a unique story of unexpected heroes!

##### **Know what class you want but not what race?** Every race in this book has a note labeled **Recommended Builds**, that lists my suggestions on what classes would work well with them. It will look like this note you're currently reading. Because of that, you can just hit Control + F and type in a class that you like (such as Bard or Fighter), and find races that compliment your playstyle well. Most of the time, that race will have stats that benefit the class well (like Charisma for a Sorcerer).

# Bugbear ### Background To learn more, check out [this youtube video!](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IKywhupayaA) ### Bugbear Traits **Ability Score Increase.**: Your Strength score increases by 2
**Age.** Bugbears reach adulthood at age 16 and live up to 80 years.
**Alignment**. Bugbears endure a harsh existence that demands each of them to remain self-sufficient, even at the expense of their fellows. They tend to be chaotic evil.
**Size**. Bugbears are between 6 and 8 feet tall and weigh between 250 and 350 pounds. Your size is Medium.
**Speed**. Your base walking speed is 30 feet.
**Darkvision**. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can't discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.
**Languages**. You can speak, read, and write Common and Goblin. #### Powerful Build. You count as one size larger when determining your carrying capacity and the weight you can push, drag, or lift.

**Recommended Builds:** Strong, stealthy, with bursts of speed and extra damage on a surprise round. The Savannah Bugbear can close a gap, get an attack off, and potentially knock an opponent prone on a surprise round, while getting 2d6 extra damage! Being an [Assassin Rogue](http://dnd5e.wikidot.com/rogue:assassin) turns that 2d6 bonus damage into 4d6 bonus damage, as well as giving you advantage to hit during the surprise round. Since you can't pounce with a two-handed weapon anyways, using a Finesse weapon such as a Rapier would allow you to trigger double-sneak attack damage as well. Alternatively, be a Monk that can charge in, knock someone prone, and bonus action to flurry into them with advantage on those extra attacks. Since you gain 10ft to your base movement speed, you'd be even better at closing the gap. As a barbarian with a Versatile weapon, you'd still have your bonus action to Rage before pouncing. Since the enemy wont be able to attack this round, you can use Reckless Attack safely-- giving you advantage while minimizing the penalties incurred.

**Ability Score Increase**: Your Dexterity score increases by 1. ### Warrior of Hruggek *Hruggek is the god of ambush & combat*
The high grass and waterholes of the Savannah have turned the bugbears there into ambushers aligned with Hruggek, able to stealthily and quietly approach adventurers and traveling merchants, only to pounce when least expected. #### **Surprise Attack**. Once per round, when you would hit a surprised creature with an attack, the attack deals an extra 2d6 damage to it. #### Pouncing Strike You drop to all fours and launch a staggering assault. When you end your movement after using Dash, if you moved at least 10 ft, you may draw your weapon if necessary and make one melee attack. If the target is hit by this, it must succeed on a Strength check vs the damage done or be knocked prone. Creatures of size large or larger have advantage on this save. You cannot use Pouncing Strike while wearing heavy armor, and may not draw a two-handed weapon as part of this strike. \page

The Taiga crafted you into the perfect tracker, in Grankhul's image. You don't ambush prey, you stalk it until it's in a position that they can't flee, then force it to fight you head on.
**Ability Score Increase**: Gain +1 to your Wisdom Score. #### Natural Camouflage Your fur is stripped and patterned in such a way that one could be forgiven for needing a second glance to notice you tracking them in the woods. While in natural settings, you may Hide while lightly obscured. #### Long Limbed. When you make a melee attack on your turn, your reach for it is 5 feet greater than normal. You pull your bowstring back further as well, and do not gain disadvantage for attacking at maximum range with bows. #### Keen Senses You have advantage on Perception Checks that rely on smell. #### Predator Pursuer When Tracking a creature via Survival Checks, you can tell roughly how far away the creature(s) you're tracking is, as well as their direction. You may make stealth checks against the creature(s) you're tracking while moving at normal speeds, allowing you to give chase to your prey quietly. When engaging a creature you're tracking, you gain advantage on intitiative checks.

**Recommended Builds**: As a **Hunter of Grankhul**, you work well as a monk, quick and silent. They would make excellent Rangers, benefiting from the wisdom bonus and feeding into the natural predator feel. Rangers in particular would be able to track down their favored prey and hunt them ruthlessly. **Shaman of Skiggaret** make excellent druids or clerics, albeit very creepy ones. Alternatively, go with a Monk of the Long Death and use the Shillelagh as your Monk Weapon!

Some Bugbears of the tribe choose performing rituals to their gods over hunting prey endlessly. Other bugbears have a healthy respect for them... and fear of them.
**Ability Score Increase**: You gain +1 to Wisdom. #### Skiggaret's Rituals You know the cantrip Shilleigh, with Wisdom as its spellcasting ability. You may use a bone as your material component; it gains Versatile (d10) and on a critical hit, the creature must make a wisdom save or become Frightened of you until the start of your next turn. You gain Ward of Skiggaret, and may cast it as a Ritual. #### Ward of Skiggaret *1st-level divination (Ritual)* ___ - **Casting Time:** 1 action - **Range:** Touch - **Components:** V, M (Severed Head of an Enemy) - **Duration:** Instant You take the severed head of a fallen enemy, and create one of the following effects. When it is done, it catches fire and cannot be used again. * The eyes of the head open, and retain the senses it had in life. If the head sees or hears a creature other than your allies, it will scream loudly, able to be heard for 100ft and awakens anyone in that area. It continues screaming for 3 turns, or until destroyed. * You may ask the head about a particular course of action. Skiggaret will answer with one of the following expressions. |The Head Looks | Means| |--|--| |Happy| Good results| |Scared|Bad results| |Angry|both good and bad results| |Bored|Results that aren't especially good or bad \page

# Goblins ### Background For a fantastic overview of what makes a Goblin a Goblin, check out this video! ### Goblin Traits **Ability Score Increase**. Your Dexterity score increases by 2
**Age**. Goblins reach adulthood at age 8 and live up to 60 years.
**Alignment**. Goblins are typically neutral evil, as they care only for their own needs. A few goblins might tend toward good or neutrality, but only rarely.
**Size**. Goblins are between 3 and 4 feet tall and weigh between 40 and 80 pounds. Your size is Small.
**Speed**. Your base walking speed is 30 feet.
**Darkvision**. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can't discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.
**Languages.** You can speak, read, and write Common and Goblin. #### **Nimble Escape**. You can take the Disengage or Hide action as a bonus action on each of your turns. ## Subraces

[Artwork by Paizo Publishing](https://paizo.com/) ### City In a city full of Humans, Orcs, or Hobgoblins, you're used to being the smallest in a fight, and knowing when to flee.
**Ability Score Increase:** Gain +1 to a stat of your choosing, other than Dexterity. #### Fury of the Small. When you damage a creature with an attack or a spell and the creature's size is larger than yours, you can cause the attack or spell to deal extra damage to the creature. The extra damage equals your level. Once you use this trait, you can't use it again until you finish a short or long rest.

**Ability Score Increase**: Your Constitution Score increases by 1 #### Predator Rider Your shaman bound the spirit of a Hyena to you, which you may ride. If it dies, it reappears at the end of a long rest. At 5th Level, this becomes a Warg, and at 10th level, a Giant Hyena.

**Recommended Builds**: *City* Goblins are almost as adaptable as Humans, working well with just about any class. +2 to Dex and +1 to a stat of your choosing means you could be a great monk, bard, fighter-- anything your heart desires. Leaning into that, Fury of the Small works with spells OR weapon attacks OR even Unarmed attacks, giving you a little extra damage when you need it most. *Savannah/Grasslands* Goblins may be fearless warriors, but they also specialize in flanking and ambushes, using their pack-hunting tactics to gain advantage. While most wouldn't think of a mounted combatant as a **Rogue**, there are huge benefits. For example, so long as you're mounted, you have an ally adjacent to enemies within 5ft of you, meaning you can *always* trigger your sneak attack. Alternatively, you could send your mount ahead of you to attack, and attack from range. If you choose to ride in, you should grab the feat [mounted combatant](http://gdnd.wikidot.com/feats#toc32), and you'll almost always have advantage on your attack rolls while making your mount sturdier. Just be sure to check the rules on [mounted combant](https://5thsrd.org/combat/mounted_combat/) before you roll initiative!

[Artwork by DanielHurd](https://www.deviantart.com/danielhurd/art/Cave-Goblin-Concept-357535698) ### Caves You live in solitude underground, and have become well-suited for those conditions. #### **Ability Score Increase** Your Wisdom Score increases by 1 #### **Black Eyes** Your darkvision has a range of 120 feet, instead of 60. #### **Grey Skin** You may Hide when Lightly Obscured. #### **Cave Crawler** You gain a climbspeed of 30ft, and can climb on ceilings, which counts as difficult terrain for you. You cannot use two-handed weapons while ceiling-climbing. You can fire a pre-loaded crossbow, but may not reload it. #### **Sunlight Sensitivity** You have disadvantage on attack rolls and Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on sight when you, the target of the attack, or whatever you are trying to perceive is in direct sunlight.

**Recommended Builds**: *Cave Goblins* are masters of the night, relying on catching their opponents off guard as they drop down from the ceiling. As ambushers, you would think they make great *Rogues*, but Sunlight Sensitivity means that you'll almost never get a sneak attack when in direct Sunlight. To fully utilize their Ability Score bonuses, I'd recommend a [Shadow Monk](http://gdnd.wikidot.com/monksubclass:way-of-shadow) build. Shadow Monk allows you to lose your enemies by Shadow Stepping into any shadow-- including shadows on the ceiling. At level 11, you'll be completely invisible while hanging from up there! It also gives you some limited spellcasting-- if you get caught in Daylight, just cast Darkness around you to level the playing field-- since you and your target would be blind to each other, you'd no longer have disadvantage!

[Artwork by Paizo Publishing](https://paizo.com/) ### BOOYAGH You were born with a natural ability to cast spells, and spent some amount of your early life practicing it.
#### Ability Score Increase. Your Charisma Score increases by 1 #### I'm a natural BOOYAGH: Choose a spellcasting class-- you gain 2 cantrips and one level 1 spell from that class. This becomes your BOOYAGH spells, and use your Charisma Modifier for their spellcasting modifier. The Level 1 BOOYAGH spell may be cast once per long rest without expending a Spell Slot. #### Slow BOOYAGH You gain the ability to cast spells as rituals. They activate your Wild BOOYAGH as if you had expended a spell slot of the spell's level. #### Wild BOOYAGH Your BOOYAHG is unpredictable. When you cast a spell, roll a d20, if the result of that roll is lower or equal to that of the Level of the Spell Slot expended, you must roll on the [Wild Magic Surge](http://dnd5e.wikidot.com/sorcerer:wild-magic) Table. If you are a Wild Magic Sorcerer, you only roll once if more than one condition would make you roll, but gain the benefits that would normally come with a Wild Surge.

**Recommended Builds**: With +2 Dex and +1 Charisma, you would make a great Bard, Sorcerer, Paladin or Warlock. You have some extra cantrips and a spell, as well as giving you 1 free 1st level cast a long rest. This works especially well with Warlocks & Paladins, who already have a strained pool of spell slots. Being a BOOYAGH means rolling on the Wild Surge table a *lot* more often. If you're going to be Surging that often, you might as well be a wild magic sorcerer and gain benefits from that. **Tides of Chaos** means you'll have advantage on a lot of your rolls, and **Controlled Chaos** means you'll have better control over what happens when you do surge.

# Grung ### Background The Grung, though adorable, are actually little bastards that like to keep slaves. They do so by poisoning their slaves regularly to keep them complacent (Seriously check out Volo's Guide to Monster's). As such, the vast majority of Grung are considered evil monsters. Despite this, some tadpoles are hatched with a immense wanderlust. These tadpoles love exploring and are more inconvenient than evil, spending their childhood causing trouble for the tribe and pulling pranks. The Grung have a word for such troublemakers, which translates roughly to "Gnome Brained". If the Grung fully develops into adulthood without falling into line, they are promptly kicked out of their home, and begin to explore the world as adventurers. ### Grung Traits **Ability Score Increase**: Your Dexterity score increases by 1.
**Age**: Grung quickly reach adulthood at age 1 and can live up to 100 years but rarely do so.
**Alignment**: Gnome-brained Grung are impulsive, and lack the need to dominate that most Grung have. Because of this, they lean towards being chaotic neutral.
**Size**: Grung are between 2 and 3 feet tall and weigh between 25 and 35 pounds. Your size is Small.
**Movement Speed:** 25 ft.
**Amphibious**: Grung can breathe air and water.
**Darkvision**: You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can't discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.
**Standing Leap**. The grung's long jump is up to 25 feet and its high jump is up to 15 feet, with or without a running start.

##### Recommended Builds **Rainforest grung** would make interesting Monks or Barbarians who want to grapple or focus on Unarmed attacks, applying that poison against multiple enemies in a round. Their Spit On The Blade works well with just about any non-spellcaster class, but particularly well with Crossbows, since crossbow users typically make fewer attacks on a round, and don't have many options for their Bonus Action. Meanwhile, **Swamp Grung** would make a great rogue, able to hide in most places and reach an enemy up to 10ft away with their tongue, triggering sneak attack damage, or a tank, grabbing enemies and pulling them away from your more squishy allies. Desert Grung are Wise, Stealthy, and Intelligent survivors. They would make great Druids, Clerics, and Wizards.

``` ``` ## Subraces

Artwork by Wizards of the Coast ### Rainforest Grung You hail from a Rainforest region, and the dangers there have given you natural defense mechanisms. In addition to the base Grung stats, you gain the following. #### Nimble Treefolk You gain +1 to your Dexterity Score, and have a climb speed of 25 ft. #### Poisonous Skin Any creature that grapples with the grung or otherwise comes into direct contact with the grung's skin must succeed on a Constitution saving throw or become poisoned for 1 minute. The DC for this save is 10 + your proficiency bonus. A poisoned creature no longer in direct contact with the grung can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success. A creature that succeeds on this save is immune for 1 hour. Based on what color of Grung you are, the poison has an additional effect: **Blue**: The poisoned creature must shout loudly or otherwise make a loud noise at the start and end of its turn. **Green**: The poisoned creature is easily distracted, and may not target the same creature on two consecutive turns unless it is the only visible hostile creature. **Red**: The poisoned creature is hallucinating wildly. Though you have no control over what they see, it blocks part of their vision, and all other creatures are considered lightly obscured. #### Spit on the Blade As a bonus action, you can spit a particularly corrosive poison onto a weapon. On the next hit made with the weapon, the creature hit must make a constitution save (DC 10+your proficiency bonus). It deals an additional 4d4 poison damage on a failed save, or half on a successful one. This ability cannot be reused until you have a short or long rest. The damage increases to 6d4 at 6th level, 8d4 at 11th level, and 10d4 at 16th level. \page

In addition to the base Grung stats, you gain the following. #### Sturdy Swampfolk You gain +1 to your Constitution Score, and have a swim speed of 25 ft. You may hold your breath for up to 10 minutes, and have advantage on saves against poison and disease. #### Natural Camouflage Your skin is bumpy and rocklike, giving you camouflage. While in forests, swamps, caves, or other natural settings, you may Hide while [lightly obscured](https://roll20.net/compendium/dnd5e/The%20Environment#toc_3). You appear as a stone or log, as appropriate. If you are at least partially submerged in water, you gain advantage on Stealth Checks. #### Toad Tongue You gain a natural weapon-- your Tongue. When making an Unarmed Attack, you may choose to attack once with your Tongue. It has a reach of 10ft, deals 1d4 damage (or more if your Unarmed Attack damage is higher), and has the Finesse Property. If you target an object that isn't being carried or warn, is no heavier than 10 lbs, and could fit in your mouth, you may retract your tongue and the object with it as part of the attack. You may use this appendage to make grapple attempts, pulling the enemy adjacent to you on success. ``` ```

In addition to the base Grung stats, you gain the following. #### Sandy Survivors Your people know how to survive the harshest of environments. Gain +1 to your Wisdom and Intelligence Score, and gain proficiency in Survival. #### Natural Camouflage Your skin has a sandy, dirty, gritty appearance, giving you camouflage. While in forests, desserts, caves, or other natural settings, you may Hide while [lightly obscured](https://roll20.net/compendium/dnd5e/The%20Environment#toc_3). You appear to be a pile of sand or dirt, as appropriate. If you are at least partially submerged in Sand, or during a Sandstorm, you have advantage on Stealth Checks. #### Battle Cry You gain the Thunderclap Cantrip and ThunderWave Spell. When casting these, you inflate yourself and let out a shrieking Battle Cry. Once per Long Rest, you may cast ThunderWave at Level 1 without using a Spell Slot. These Spells use your Wisdom Score as their Spellcasing Ability. \page

# Half-Ogre

Artwork by Wizards of the Coast ### Background Big. Dumb. Strong. Lazy. That's the nature of the Ogre. Luckily, Half-ogres are only half as big, half as dumb, half as strong, and half as lazy. Though you're only half an Ogre, Ogre traits tend to be very dominant, and so if you want to learn more about what that means, check out [this video!](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AfSVA4yf8zM) ### Half-Ogre Traits **Type**: You are considered a Humanoid
**Ability Score Increases**: Your Constitution and Strength Score increase by 2.
**Age**: Half-Ogres age like millk; mature at 14, live until 60.
**Alignment**: Half-Ogres are so chaotic that they don't even like being reasoned with. Don't use big words; show them where they can feed, fight, or.... well, you know. They can be either neutral or evil, but rarely have the capacity for true goodness, as that would require too much work.
**Size**: Medium, usually between 6-8 feet tall.
**Movement Speed**: 30 ft.
### Dangerously Dumb. When you would fail an Intelligence Check, you become Confused, as per the [Confusion spell](https://roll20.net/compendium/dnd5e/Confusion#content), which lasts up to 3 turns, or until you pass the save (DC equals the DC of the intelligence check failed). ### Long Limbed & Strong On your turn, your reach with melee attacks is extended by 5ft, and you count as one size larger when determining your carrying capacity and the weight you can push, drag, or lift.

### Powerful... But Lazy. **Powerful**: Your immense Ogre Strength means being able to beat the everliving shit out of people. You can do the following: + As a bonus action on your turn, your primal strength can fuel your attacks with a destructive fury. When you would deal damage with a melee weapon attack on this turn, you can roll one of the weapon's damage dice an additional time and add it to the damage total. + When grappling a creature of size Medium or Smaller, you may wield it as an improvised weapon, dealing equal damage to both the creature or object you target, as well as the creature being wielded. A small creature wielded in this way deals 1d10+Strength damage to both creatures, while a medium creature deals 1d12+Strength to both. This damage can be doubled by using the first feature of **Powerful But Lazy**. **But Lazy**: At the end of a turn where you've used at least one of the above abilities, you gain one stack of Exhaustion for each ability you used. ### I'll get Ogre it. During a short rest, you may recover a stack of exhaustion for each 30 minutes you spend Ogre-Napping. During a long rest, you recover all stacks of exhaustion. When taking an Ogre-Nap, you are in a deep slumber for 30 minutes. You can only be woken early by taking damage, or by a magical effect that would force you awake. If woken early during an Ogre-Nap, you wake up Confused, as per the [Confusion spell](https://roll20.net/compendium/dnd5e/Confusion#content), which lasts up to 3 turns, or until you pass the save (DC 10 + two times your current exhaustion).

**Recommended Build**: Half-Ogres are strong, hearty front-linesmen. Keep it simple and go with a Fighter (Champion) build. For the price of 2 Exhaustion stacks, you could pick up a size medium creature and deal 4d12 damage+2x Strength damage to BOTH the creature youre attacking AND the creature you're using as a club, assuming you crit, which you probably will because Champions crit on a 18-20 at higher levels. Alternatively, Barbarian is a good choice for a tankier feel!

**Recommended Builds**: *Warmasters of Maglubiyet* know that being the best fighter keeps you alive in a fight, but to win a battle, you need the best army. They're capable of going toe-to-toe, using their Maneuvers to gain an edge, or when an ally would need an edge, they can provide that. They're really meant to be either [**Bards**](http://gdnd.wikidot.com/coreclass:bard) or [**Battle Master Fighters**](http://gdnd.wikidot.com/fightersubclass:battle-master), as that will increase both the size of your dice you're rolling, how many dice you have stored, and how often you get to regain them. If you want to be more of a [gish](https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/gish), go Bard. You wont be able to use your Maneuvers as often, but you'll be able to supplement them with a variety of spells. If you want to hand out inspiration and do manuevers as often as possible, go Battlemaster Fighter. Either way, you'll be an extremely versatile and valuable ally to have!

You may shrink the radius of a spell by any amount. For example, a 15ft cube could become a 5ft cube, or a 20ft radius could become a 15ft radius. #### Eyes of War You gain the service of a Raven as your Familiar, which can be resummoned during a long-rest. You may, as an action, see through the eyes of your Raven, and perceive through its senses until the end of your next turn. As long as the creature is on the same plane of existence as you, you can use your action on subsequent turns to maintain this connection, extending the duration until the end of your next turn. While perceiving through the other creature's senses, you benefit from any special senses possessed by your Raven, and you are blinded and deafened to your own surroundings. When percieving through your familar, you are considered as having line of sight on what it can see for purposes of spellcasting. ``` ```

You may consider any creature standing in darkness or dim lighting within 30ft of you as being within 5ft of you. #### Shadow Slip As a bonus action, you may magically teleport, along with any Equipment you are wearing or carrying, up to 30 feet to an unoccupied space you can see. Both the space it is leaving and its destination must be in dim light or Darkness. You may not use this again until you've had a short or long rest. You may expend your Shadow Slip to move a grappled creature to a space adjacent to you. #### Misdirection & Intimidation You gain access to the Thaumaturgy, Minor Illusion, & Prestidigitation Cantrips. Your Spellcasting Ability for these is Wisdom.

**Recommended Builds**: For the **Devastator**, go Wizard. Specifically an Evocation wizard. You'll be able to turn your fireball into a devastating line attack, or your Lightning Bolt into a Cone. The *Iron Shadow* makes a great **Monk**, with bonuses to Wisdom and Darkness Surrounds giving range to your Unarmed Attacks. Use your Prestidigitation to snuff out torches and then punch the guy's lights out. To double-dip the shadow theme, I'd recommend a **[Way of the Shadow](http://gdnd.wikidot.com/monksubclass:way-of-shadow)** Monk. Alternatively, it's a great way to deliver touch spells like Cure Wounds or Inflict Wounds or Vampire Touch.

**Ability Score Increase:** Gain +1 to your Charisma.

#### Bait the Trap As an action on your turn, you can fake an injury to distract nearby foes, baiting the enemy to leaving open a vulnerability. Until the end of your next turn, your allies gain advantage on attack rolls against enemies within 10 feet of you that can see you. Once you use this trait, you can't use it again until you finish a short or long rest.

**Ability Score Increase**: Gain +1 Wisdom. #### Dragon Glider You have a flying speed of 50 feet. To use this speed, you can’t be wearing medium or heavy armor. While flying, you must move at least 25 feet on your turn or fall to the ground. #### Draconic Claws You are proficient with your unarmed strikes, which deal 1d4 slashing damage on a hit.

**Recommended Builds**: *Raptor Kobolds* make very good rogues, with their high Dexterity and Pack Tactics. Alternatively, go Bard and use your action to give your whole team advantage, then use your bonus action to give inspiration. Your team will *love* you! Meanwhile, *Winged Kobolds* make excellent scouts as Monks or Rogues, and great spellcasters as Clerics to Tiamat. Give them a crossbow or some spells and they can both damage and support from the air.

**Ability Score Increase**: You gain +1 to your Intelligence. #### Trap Maker You may spend one minute drawing a Rune onto an object, as below. A Spell that you cast on the rune when creating it will then activate when it is triggered. If you regain the spell slot used to make that trap through any means, the rune disappears and the spell will no longer be triggered. You may carve multiple runes into a trap to specify more elaborate triggers (such as when a container is opened by someone who had not said the password). A single object may not have more than one Trap in it at a time, regardless of how many runes you draw on it. When a spell is activated, the Runes disappear. The Runes are written in Draconic, though they do not say what the effect of the spell will be. If the spell targets Self, a Radius, or Cube, it targets the trap itself. Otherwise, it targets the triggering creature. | Rune | Trigger |----|----| | Time| The trap activates after a certain delay. | Touch| The trap activates when touched or moved | Person | The trap only activates against a certain person, or someone other than the whitelisted people would trigger it through another rune. | Open | When the container is opened. | Password| When either the password is said, or if another trigger is met and the password is NOT said. | Proximity | When a creature enters the range of the spell. **Recommended Builds**: *Trap Makers* can be any spellcaster. As such, a Tinkerer Kobold could lay a trap that would cause whoever touches it to burst into laughter, or cause an illusion to appear when someone walks near it.

**Recommended Builds**: *Spellscale Sorcerers* are called such because they are natural Sorcerers. You *could* combo it with other Charisma-based classes, but the full benefits of this race will really only be felt as a Sorcerer, and the Draconic Bloodline was intended to play into the backstory and mechanics of Spellscale Kobolds even further.

# Kuo-Toa

Artwork by Wizards of the Coast ### Background Kuo-toa are degenerate fish like humanoids that once inhabited the shores and islands of the surface world. Long ago humans and their ilk drove the kuo-toa underground, where they dwell in madness and everlasting night. Kuo-toa can no longer abide daylight. Kuo-toa worship gods of their own insane creation, but if enough kuo-toa believe that a god is real, the energy of their collective subconscious can cause that god to manifest as a physical entity. The form a kuo-toa god takes depends on the inspiration for its divine image, and is usually random or nonsensical. One of the most revered gods of the kuo-toa is Blibdoolpoolp the Sea Mother, who takes the form of a female human with a crayfish head, a crayfish's claws, and an articulated shell covering her shoulders. Blibdoolpoolp was likely invented by a kuo-toa that improved on a broken human statue by adding the limbs and head of a crustacean. In sudden awe of its handiwork, it then named the resulting form a god.

### Kuo-Toa Traits **Ability Score Increase**. Your Constitution score increases by 1, and your Wisdom score increases by 2.
**Age**. Kuo-Toas reach adulthood at age 8 and live up to 60 years.
**Alignment**. Kuo-Toas are typically lawful evil. A few Kuo-Toas might tend toward good or neutrality, but only rarely. Kuo-Toas are naturally submissive, to the point of inventing gods to serve rather than having no authority figure, giving them their lawful tendencies.
**Size**. Medium
**Speed**. Your base walking speed is 30 feet.
**Darkvision**. You can see in dim light within 120 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can't discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.
**Sunlight Sensitivity**. While in sunlight, the kuo-toa has disadvantage on attack rolls, as well as on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on sight. #### Amphibious The kuo-toa can breathe air and water. #### Are you a GOD? When an ally of yours that you can see lands a critical hit, or reduces an enemy to 0hp, you are filled with a genuine belief that they may be, at least partially, divine. As a reaction, you may bestow them with one of these benefits: + They become Enlarged, as per the [Enlarge/Reduce](https://roll20.net/compendium/dnd5e/Spells:Enlarge%20Reduce#content) Spell. + They gain an extra Action on their turn. That action can be used only to take the Attack (one weapon Attack only), Dash, Disengage, Hide, or Use an Object action. + They can add your Wisdom Modifier to their Armor Class & Saving Throws. These effects last on this ally until that ally misses an attack or ends a turn without having damaged an enemy.

**Recommended Builds**: Kuo-Toa are cheerleaders, whipping up their allies from the backlines. As such, they make great spellcasters who rely on Wisdom, such as a Circle of the Land Druid or Clerics of any Domain.

# Myconids

**Senses**: You have Darkvision to 60ft
**Age**. Myconids reach maturity at 6 years old; up to 1000yrs.
**Alignment**. Most myconids are True Neutral with good myconids are fairly common and evil myconids are very rare.
**Size**. 4 to 6 feet, weighing 70 to 120 lbs. Your size is Medium.
**Speed.** Your base walking speed is 30 feet. #### Sun Sickness In direct sunlight, you begin to wilt. For each hour spent in direct sunlight, you gain one level of exhaustion. #### No Mouth You do not eat, and have no mouth. Instead of sleeping, you sink your roots into soil or organic material during short and long rests to get nutrients. Your movement speed is 0 during this, and it takes a full minute to unroot. You cannot produce words vocally, but can still cast spells that require a vocal component by vibrating your body, producing a low-growl. #### Rapport Spores. A 20-foot radius of spores extends from the myconid. These spores affect only creatures with an Intelligence of at least 2 that aren’t undead, constructs, or elementals. Affected creatures can communicate telepathically with one another while they are within 30 feet of each other. The effect lasts for 1 hour. ``` ``` ## Subspecies

#### Pacifying Spores (1/Long Rest) A 10-foot radius of spores extends from the myconid. Roll 3d8 + 1d8 per Character Level (eg: a level 3 Dreamspore would roll 6d8); the total is how many hit points of creatures your Pacifying Spores can affect. Creatures that you choose within range are affected in ascending order of their current hit points (ignoring unconscious creatures). Starting with the creature that has the lowest current hit points, each creature affected by your spores falls unconscious until the spell ends, the sleeper takes damage, or someone uses an action to shake or slap the sleeper awake. Subtract each creature's hit points from the total before moving on to the creature with the next lowest hit points. A creature's hit points must be equal to or less than the remaining total for that creature to be affected. Undead, Plants, Constructs, and Creatures immune to being charmed aren't affected by this spell.

**Recommended Builds**: A *Dreamspore Myconid* would be an excellent Arcane Trickster-- able to communicate to his allies silently and, if caught by a guard, quietly and peacefully incapacitate him with the Pacifying Spores. Alternatively, +2 to Int Makes for a great Wizard!

#### Animating Spores (1/Long Rest) As an action, you may target the body of a Large or smaller creature that had a CR no higher than 1/4 your level. That creature is raised as a spore servant, acting on your initiative and following your orders. The spore servant exists until your next Long Rest, or until destroyed. Elementals, oozes, undead, constructs, and plants cannot become Spore Servants. When you would cast a spell with a target of Self or Touch, or use the class feature Channel Divinity, you may channel it through your Spore Servant instead, targeting either the Spore Servant if it would normally be centered on you, or a creature they touch if it would normally effect a touched creature.

**Recommended Build**: *Rotspore Myconids* would make excellent Druids, with +2 to Wisdom and +1 to Constitution, especially as a [Circle of Spores Druid](http://dnd5e.wikidot.com/druid:spores)! Spore zombies, away! Alternatively, a [Death Domain](http://dnd5e.wikidot.com/cleric:death) Cleric could have a lot of fun channeling their spells through the Spore Servant, or using the Spore Servant's natural attacks for damage while the Cleric focuses on healing. If neither of the above sound appealing, *Rotspore Myconids* would make great Monks. Have your size-large zombie push someone prone, and gain advantage on ALL your attacks that round. Thematically, I'd go with the [Way of the Long Death](http://dnd5e.wikidot.com/monk:long-death) Monk, but really any would work.

**Speed.** Your base walking speed is 30 feet.
**Darkvision.** You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in Darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in Darkness, only shades of gray.
**Languages.** You can speak, read, and write Common and Orc.
### Aggressive. As a Bonus Action, you can move up to your speed toward an enemy of your choice that you can see or hear. You must end this move closer to the enemy than you started. ### Powerful Build. You count as one size larger when determining your carrying Capacity and the weight you can push, drag, or lift.

**Recommended Builds**: *Eyes of Gruumsh* make extraordinary paladins. Cast arcame weapon AND use the paladin's smite in one turn. Better still, grab a sheild, the Mounted Combatant feat, and a lance: Just never get off your mount, and you'll almost always have advantage. Not your style? Cleric of the War Domain fits thematically (as Gruumsh is the god of strategic warfare) and even gets you spells like Spiritual Weapon, which are on the Eye Of Gruumsh's original monster stat block! You can also play as a Battlemaster Fighter; you'll be fighting with experience and leadership over brute force. Still not happy? Well Eyes of Gruumsh literally lost an eye by *punching it out of themselves*, so monk might fit (and the +1 to your three favorite stats doesn't hurt either!). Just make sure you grab a monk weapon so you can benefit from Arcane Weapon, which won't apply to your fists.

To become an eye of Gruumsh, an orc that has been chosen by Gruumsh must gouge out one of its eyes as a sign of devotion, sacrificing half of its mortal vision in return for divine power. These god-touched orcs are revered as living connections to Gruumsh, and are treated with respect even when they are old and infirm.

Orcs consider Shargaas to be a divinity suited to pariahs and weaklings, all of them unfit for true roles in tribal life. These outsiders live in the most remote, deepest parts of the tribe’s domain
**Ability Score Increase**: You gain +2 to Dexterity #### Precision Strikes When you would make an attack roll against a creature and have advantage, you may reroll the lower of the two d20s and resolving the advantage as normal. #### Shargaas’s Sight Magical darkness doesn’t impede your darkvision, and you may see in total darkness in that range. #### Veil of Shargaas You may cast Darkness without any components. Wisdom is its spellcasting ability. This ability recharges after a Short or Long Rest.

**Recommended Builds:** Red Fangs of Shargaas are stealthy, choosing to fight dirty over fighting fair. As such, they make great Rogues with their ability to give themselves advantage whenever they need it for their sneak attack through the combination of Veil of Shargaas and Shargaas' Sight. They would make interesting Hexblade warlocks too-- just reflavor the Raven Queen's influence on the blade as being Shargaas and you'd be fine. Alternatively, for a less optimal but fun play style, try going with the College of Whispers Bard.

**Ability Score Increase**: You gain +2 to Wisdom. #### Blessed of Yurtrus You are immune to Disease and cannot be Poisoned. #### Touch of the White Hand **The Left Hand Heals.** When you would use the Attack Action on your turn, you may replace an attack with a harmless touch of your Left Hand. You may remove one Disease or Poison effecting a Creature, or expend a number of your Hit Dice to heal them. Removing Disease or Poison from a creature restores one Hit Dice for you, up to your normal max.
**The Right Hand Infects.** When you would hit with an Unarmed Attack, you may choose to channel the power of Yurtrus into the creature you hit. You may expend some number of Hit Dice. At the start of their next turn, this creature must make a Constution Saving Throw. The DC for this saving throw equals 8 + your Wisdom Modifier + your Proficiency Bonus. On a failed save, the creature rolls the hit dice that you had expended and takes an amount of Poison Damage equal to the result, and is Poisoned. All creatures within 10ft must make a Constution Saving Throw or be Poisoned. Creatures who are poisoned in this way must repeat the Consitution Saving Throw at the start of their turn or suffer similar effect, which may continue to spread. On the first success, that creature is no longer poisoned and cannot be repoisoned in this way for one hour.

**Recommended Builds:** The White Hand of Yurtrus make excellent Monks for offensive play, with their abilities triggering off of Unarmed Attacks. Being able to do lots of Unarmed Attacks in a turn means being able to heal or hurt multiple targets. Grave Clerics can maximize the healing potential-- their *Circle of Mortality* ability will make every hit dice you expend heal for their highest possible amount... so long as they were nearly dead.

You can’t use this feature again until you finish a Long Rest. ### Display of Strength When you would make a skill check that would rely on Charisma Modifier, you may instead use your Strength Modifier. On success, the enemy is moved by your raw power and determination. The creature you use this on does not immediately become hostle, as what you do is not a threat, but rather a passive flex of your muscle. For example, if you succeeded on an Intimidation check in this way, he is scared of the physical harm you could do to him. Meanwhile, succeeding on a Deception Check might mean that he doesn't necessarily believe or disbelieve you, but knows it's in his own interest to act as if he does, because otherwise you'd rip his arms off.

``` ``` ### Horned Tactics You can use a bonus action to attempt to shove that target with your demonic horns. The target must be no more than one size larger than you and within 5 feet of you. Unless it succeeds on a Strength saving throw against a DC equal to 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Strength modifier, you push it up to 10 feet away from you, or knock it prone. ### Unbridled Fury. In response to being hit or missed by a melee attack, you may make one melee weapon attack against the attacker as a reaction. If the attacker missed, you have advantage on this attack. When you would use this ability, you risk losing track of reality as you feed your fiendish rage. At the start of your next turn, you must roll a d6 to determine your behavior for that turn. |Result|Behavior| |------|--------| |1-2 | You can act and move normally. | 3-4 | At the start of your turn, you use all your Movement to move towards a random creature you can see. **Recommended Builds**: The Tanarukk is all about making use of the action economy, giving you a bonus action to knock someone prone, and a reaction that can be consistently triggered for extra attacks. Unbridled fury seems like a huge drawback for basically one additional attack, but there's a 33% chance you get your normal turn, and 66% chance you only lose your movement. With a 16% chance of attacking a random target, you might still target an enemy, especially if you have more enemies than allies on the field. Really, the only result that will never, ever go well for you is a 6.... which only sacrifices one of your attacks. Because of this, it's better to choose someone who gains a lot from that one extra attack-- a [Great Weapon Master build.](http://gdnd.wikidot.com/feats#toc16); **Barbarian & Fighters**, in particular. Having a -5 to your attack roll doesn't hurt as much when you have advantage too! If you're looking for something less conventional, a **Paladin** or a **Hexblade Warlock** with Eldritch Smite could be fun. You won't have the highest spellcasting ability modifier, but your smites will hit just as hard.
